INDESIGN CS6 : wrong spot to process conversion using L*A*B system

The separation process of spot colors (PMS) using the L*A*B values is completely out of range with my ripping system (polkadots). Previously with CS5 and the CMYK process, PMS 300 was broke with C100 M56 Y00 K00 values.
In the new CS6, the same Pantone is broken with C100 M65 Y28 K00 values, which is completely out of the range. I encountered the same error on a very big job, which cost me 1 ton of paper…
I tried to force the CMYK separation in the INK MANAGER menu, but it doesn't work properly.
Is there another way to fix it ? Is there any chance to go back and use a good, reliable, CMYK separation system with CS6 ?

Now maybe we should talk about your color management. In theory the LAB mixes should be working better than book values, IF you have the correct color profiles in place for your equipment.
Are you sure about the 28% yellow—I don't see that much yellow with any document CMYK profile.
The  conversion from the Lab values depends on your document's CMYK profile and the Color Setting's Conversion Options. Europe ISO with Relative Colormetric and Black Point Compensation turned on returns 100|58|0|0, while US SWOP Perceptual with Black Point off returns 100|65|13|1. So as Peter mentions you have to have the correct profile in place for Lab conversions to work.
I'm working with ISO coated V2 profiles, based on FOGRA, modified ISO 12647-2, specific profiles for printers, designed to limit inkage up to 300%. My RIP is working with the document profile, but has no device link installed.
Thanks anyway for your help, that's fine, works good !!!

  • InDesign CS6 crashing in packaging process

    Hi all,
I'm having a problem with InDesign crashing during the 'packaging' process. Here are the details:
    System:
    iMac running 10.6.8 OS
    Version: CS6 8.0.1
    Issue:
When packaging, after ive gone through, agreed to the warning blah blah its starts packaging. Sometimes it gets to packaging the links then crashes half way through, but most of the time it only gets as far as packaging the fonts then crashes. Ive sent crash reports, I've updated, I'v saved as different names in different locations, I've called adobe and sat on hold for 30 mins before i got impatient and hung up. Ive found its also running super slow - it takes a few seconds to highlight text or object and even longer to copy and paste.
Bottom line, I need to be able to send the package to another colleague so its very frustrating. I've also tried exporting an .idml file and package that in CS5.5, but it didnt work either. We pay an absolute fortune for this software in Australia - it should work!
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Peter,
We keep all our files on a Mac Leopard Server. There are no 'illegal' characters in paths, but your suggestion to copy to local worked. but this is a bit of a pain to do everytime i need to package (which is pretty much every time!) and ive worked of this server using the same file structure for a couple of years now and never had this problem until installing CS6 last week.
Heres what im working with (maybe you can see an issue that i can't):
InDesign file sits at: Leopard Server/Folder Name/2012/WORKBOOKS/Folder Name/FileName_021112.indd
    Link files sits at: Leopard Server/Folder Name/2012/WORKBOOKS/Source Files/Stock Images/File_00111255.jpg
    Thoughts?
    Thankyou!

  • Pantone solid to process conversion using Adobe Illustrator CS5

    Hello everyone.
I´m having a little problem converting a solid color to process using the Adobe Swatch Libraries.
I own a Pantone Color Bridge Coated and Uncoated set books and I chose the color 3262 C for a client of mine.
On the book the equivalent process color for this solid one is C 76 M 0 Y 38 K 0.
But, when I select the same solid color on Adobe Illustrator, and I ask to convert to process, the software is giving me different CMYK coordinates. The software is showing the "correct" process color equivalent to 3626 C is C 78 M 0 Y 32 K 0.
    Ok, now my questions:
    - Which one I should consider as the most accurate solid to process conversion? The book or the Adobe conversion?
    - Maybe my Adobe Illustrator is not updated? I downloaded the digital Libraries from Pantone web site and I´m still getting this mismatch.
    - Maybe the book is not updated ? I just bought the "Pantone Plus Series" this week - it´s the most update book of Pantone!).
Thanks in advance for your help!

Well, I think I found my answer. And it´s easier than I thought.
I contacted the Pantone suport and they just realize I was talking about other book.
I have the Pantone Color Bridge Books. But not the standard ones. I have the Plus Series (with the green cover). This is the most updated books from Pantone.
The Plus Series has different CMYK equivalents, because in this edition they unified the European and the North American CYMK standards.
And of course, because of that, the Adobe swatches libraries was outdated.
Then I just downloaded the new PANTONE PLUS Digital Libraries for Adobe on Pantone´s web site. Now I can pick the right color, just selecting the Pantone+ in the swatches libraries. Here is the link: http://www.pantone.com/pages/Pantone/Pantone.aspx?pg=20721 (you have to be a registered member to download it).
Now I have the same both CMYK coordinates from the book and from the Adobe conversion.
Thanks to everyone who tried to help!

  • LONG_RAW conversion (using OLE) to file system then import into BLOB column

To whom it may concern (I will call "hero" or "savior" if you can solve this for me),
I posted this message an another thread; but then later thought it would be better in its own thread.
I was wondering how to extract the Adobe Acrobat Reader files (PDF) from OLE component stored in a LONG_RAW database column. I was able to successfully extract the MS-Word, MS-Excel, MS-Powerpoint, and MS-Project to the operating system. I was not able to extract the Adobe PDF files. The PDF files do not return an error message nor do they write out to the file system?
Leonid previous posted some suggestions on how to convert the data. Can anyone expand on tasks #4 and #5 (see below)?
You can use this library to do the following task:
    1. Get the type of an object stored inside OLE Item. Get information about the OLE server.
    GetCLSID, GetProgID, IsIDispatchSupported
    2. Get information about the object
    IsLinked, GetSourceDisplayName
    3. Get information from the object in formats supported by its IDataObject interface.
    EnumFormatEtc, RegClipFormat, GetData
I suppose it's the best way to extract pictures!
    4. Save the object into an external file throu IPersistFile interface. It works only if IPersistFile::Save method is implemented by the OLE server. Unfortunately, some OLE servers don't support this method even don't return a correct error code.
    SaveToFile
Works with: MS Word, MS Excel
Not works with: Adobe Acrobat (I'm not sure. Maybe I've done something wrong), MS Photo Editor
    5. Extract the 'Contents' stream from a structured storage /a compound document/.
    ExtractToFile
It isn't a documented way, but it can be used to extract PDF files.
I have tried the following two scenarios for the PDF extraction:
    -- First Attempt
    ret:=OLEXTRA.SaveToFile( application, v_FILENAME_WO_EXT || '.pdf' );
    if ret <> 0 then
    show_message( 'SaveToFile Error code='||ret );
    end if;
-- application does not return an error message
-- application does not save the PDF file to the operating system.
    -- Second Attempt
    ret:=OLEXTRA.ExtractToFile( application, 'stg.pdf', 'fname.pdf' );
    if ret <> 0 then
    show_message( 'ExtractToFile Error code='||ret );
    end if;
-- application does not return an error message.
-- application does not save fname.pdf to the operating system
-- application saves the stg.pdf to file system, but cannot open in Adobe
Thanks in advance for the help,
    Mike

There is no way from PL/SQL in Forms - you'll have to call out to C or Java Code to do it.
You can link in Pro*C or OCI code into forms as a user exit in which case it can share the forms connection but that's not for the faint hearted.
Using Java - called from the Java Importer feature in 6i+ you'll end up creating a separate connection.
Frankly if you can do it in a generic enough way through a VB executable stick with that.
Forms can get images in an out of a long raw using read_image_file and write_image_file but that does not extend to any binary file - just images.

  • InDesign CS6 can't read EPS files from earlier version of InDesign

I have a series of six violin method books (Kaleidoscopes for Violin) that I created in InDesign CS2.
Having now upgraded to InDesign CS6, all of the EPS files used in these books -- hundreds and hundreds of files -- are unreadable by the program.  I receive the error message, "Error encountered while reading TIFF image. Image may be damaged or incompatible. Resave the image with different settings and try again."
Another user, ratgui, reported this problem on February 2, 2013 (two months ago) and has received no response.  This user's files are also music files, imported from InDesign CS4 (more recent than mine).
Needless to say, there is nothing wrong with my EPS files, given that every single one of them was read correctly (and is still read correctly) by the older, supposedly less-advanced version of InDesign!  The only work-around currently is to save each image in PNG format (luckily Sibelius exports to PNG).  For 600-800 files, this represents three or four full days of unnecessary work, and will double the number of images on my hard drive.
The EPS issue is a remarkably serious flaw in a software package that costs many hundreds of dollars, especially given that I posted the same problem in response to the release of InDesign CS5.  A response (and, I daresay, a software update that fixes the problem) would be greatly appreciated.
As a side note to the developers -- it is super, duper cumbersome that this error arises in a separate pop-up box for EVERY affected image.  These pop-up boxes must be dismissed one at a time.  Worse yet, once you have dismissed the error message for a given image, the message appears AGAIN if you return to the same page!!  This unnecessary hassle makes it impossible to even work with the underlying document.  Placing the error message in the links palette would save a great deal of headache.  It is fairly obvious that the images aren't being read properly ... they all appears as gray boxes.
    Thanks!!

    Hi Peter
Many thanks for your advice; I re-defined the printer presets and now it works fine.

  • How to call SQL statements in InDesign CS6?

    Hi,
My plug-in needs to interact with the database, and update the database content, how should I do, can I call SQL statements in InDesign CS6?
         Thanku very much.

The same way you'd call them from any C++ program. You don't mention which platform, and that probably makes a difference.
I'm accessing an SQL database in InDesign CS6 on Windows. I'm using the ODBC interface to SQL database that Windows provides, via the nanodbc wrapper. So I'm linking to odbc32.lib and odbccp32.lib, and including the nanodbc.cpp and nanodbc.h files. (See http://lexicalunit.github.io/nanodbc/ )

  • InDesign CS6 Extension and JSON

    Hi everybody
I'm just building up an InDesign CS6 Extension and would like to use JSON. JSON should be native with Flash-Players > version 11 but if I set the Flex Compiler -> Flash Player Options to version 11.0.0 the JSON-commands still won't be recognized (I get an error while using JSON.stringify() ). I'm using the Extension Builder 4.5 SDK. Are there any options I din't set yet or is it not possible to connect to JSON natively with Extension Builder 4.5 SDK?
    Thanks for any information
    best Richard

I would suggest to use the JSON library which is part of as3corelib:

  • InDesign CS6 Test: LBQ start hangs on OSGI prompt

    Hi folks,
I installed an InDesign CS6 test server with four instances, configured for LBQ as written in the docs. The server starts flawlessly, The ior?.txt are written correctly. Then I start clover.cmd and get a console with the message "Listening for transport dt_socket at address: 8787" and an osgi prompt. Nothing more.
Some time ago I already installed an InDesign CS6 server on a different machine, using exactly the same procedures, and everything worked, including LBQ. After the osgi prompt, obviously an embedded tomcat was started, listening on port 8080. Why is this now different, and no tomcat appears?
I am logged in as administrator, so access rights shouldn't be a problem. System is a MS Windows server 2008 R2 on a virtual box.
    Any hints or helpful comments?
    Regards,
    RR.

One of our CS5 users is having a similar problem when using InDesign.  I have deleted the prefrences twice, and it continues to run very slow, or freezes up on her sometimes. She is running Mac OS X 10.6.8, 4 quadpro Xeon 2.9 Ghz, 8 Gb of ram. So i believe she more then meets the Minimum requirements.  We believe the problem mainly exist while running InDesign, but for us it is hit or miss. We have ran disk premission cleanup and disk check so we do not believe it is system related.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  My last resort is to attempt a reinstall and see if that works.
    Thanks for any help.

  • InDesign CS6 Question...

I have a user reporting various problems with Adobe InDesign CS6 including occasional crashing.  When I look into her system.log, I see a lot of entries that read:
/Applications/Adobe InDesign CS6/Adobe InDesign CS6.app/Contents/MacOS/Adobe InDesign CS6[26191]: SCPreferencesCreate failed: Permission denied
Can anyone tell me what this error means exactly?  I get that it is a permission error, but to what path?  My user is running InDesign under a standard user account (not an admin acct.).  Is there something I need to change to correct this permissions error?  Promoting her account to an admin account is not an option.

Correct Peter – override a header on a master page header for editing. Thank you!! My old job was on a Mac, so a lot of the commands do not work on my PC (at a new job).
    Thanks much!!!

  • Why is the fontd process using up to 80% of CPU when I have InDesign CS6 open?

    Macbook 13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008
    OS X 10.8.4
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
This problem has arrisen within the past week and only happens when InDesign CS6 is open. I cleared the font cache last time and ran InDesign right after with no problem. Just started happening again. What gives?

Yeah, Font Book is how I've been importing many many different fonts I've been using in projects. I've skimmed the article you linked some more and it's great! I need to make the time to sit down and read it in depth to get it all down.
What's seemed to solve the probelm was repairing the disk and repairing permisions both a few times. That seemed to fix the issue entirely as there were some kinks in there that needed to be worked out from the recovery drive. Since then I haven't seen the fontd issue arrise again. If it does I'll post here. Thanks for your help!

  • CS5.5 & CS6 Spot to CMYK conversion not matching Pantone + Guide book

    Hey,
I have both cs5.5 & cs6 indesign both of which are giving me different values of cmyk compared against the Pantone + guide, eg if I select pms 173C and convert to cmyk the values are not correct when I check the values in the book is there a way to fix this, other wise it will be highly annoying to have to manually put in the cmyk values for each job when matching spot colours for digital prints. Any help /suggestions or if there is any settings to change?
    Cheers.
    Jack.

In CS6 the Pantone solid libraries are always defined as Lab—as far as I can tell the Ink Manager's Use Standard Lab Values no longer has any effect.
So these libraries are now  defined as Spot colors with Lab definitons–if you convert the spots to process via Ink Manager your document's CMYK profile makes a color managed conversion:
If for some reason you want a predefined CMYK mix (but for what press or device?) there is Color Bridge Coated and Uncoated—those colors are defined as process CMYK. So you could delete PANTONE 173 C and replace it with Color Bridge Coated PANTONE 173 CP.

  • Photoshop images with spot channels in Indesign CS6 (layout question)

I've got an Indesign CS6 layout that will have a spot varnish when it goes to press. Right now I've got a layout with psd files that have spot channels in them that will be used for the spot varnish.
My question is, in Indesign when I'm laying this out should I have one layer with all the psd artwork (with no spot channels) and then a layer on top of that with the psd files with the psd layers turned off with the spot channel showing? I want to make this easy to print in the office so by doing it this way I could just turn the spot layer off and print.
Will this work for the printer?
layer 1 psd files with no spot channels
layer 2 psd files with photoshop layers turned off with the spot channel showing

Besides the obvious extra work of tracking 2 images, there would be potential problems if the images needs to be scaled and moved, and you would have to assume people downstream would know what's going on—should the layer be on or off?
I would double check with the current printer—they should know the only way to view a spot is via Sep or Output preview by turning CMYK off—magenta could just as easily be process as  spot.
Take a closer look at the Alias method. Here it is with your magenta defined SPOT VARNISH.
With SPOT VARNISH set as No Alias in Ink Manager and with Overprint turned on:
And with an additional spot color defined as white named CLEAR VARNISH. When you need to print in house alias SPOT VARNISH to CLEAR VARNISH and check Simulate Overprint in the Print dialog. You can get to Ink Manger via the Print>Output dialog or Swatches panel:
All you have to do is delete the CLEAR VARNISH before sending the job to the printer or exporting

  • Items missing on PDF when using Indesign CS5.5 doc in Indesign CS6

I have had the problem of picking up a document that had been created in Indesign CS5.5 processing to PDF out of Indesign CS6 and two lines of type and two lines of outlined type had 'disappeared' when run to a PDF.
I spent some time investigating layers etc to no avail. When I eventually processed the document out of CS5.5 to PDF the result was exactly as appearing on screen in Indesign.
Does anyone know of this discrepancy between 5.5 and 6 or am I doing something wrong?

Is it interactive PDF or the Print PDF ?
Are you using the same settings in Cs6 that is in Cs5 ?
also, are these items on the master page ?

  • Indesign CS6 PMS conversion to cmyk

Hi all, CS 6 Indesign has changed the pms to cmyk colour conversion based on Lab values which creates a lot of problems for us. I have followed these instructions form adobe site yet when testing, in CS6 with a pms colour, for instance pms 485C, when converting within indesign to cmyk values, instead of getting what they are supposed to be which is mag 95, yellow 100, i still get wrong values from indesign conversion to C -7.32, M97.5, Y-100, K0.71
    Adobe InDesign CS6:
    Quit the application
From the folder Adobe InDesign CS6/Presets/Swatch Libraries/, remove all the libraries that have names starting with Pantone+
From any older version of Adobe InDesign (CS2 - CS5) copy all the Pantone libraries with extension .acb and place into: Adobe InDesign CS6/Presets/Swatch Libraries/
Similarly, copy all Pantone libraries with extension .acbl and place into: Adobe InDesign CS6/Presets/Swatch Libraries/Legacy/
    Restart your application.
