Indesign CSS crashes when placing a Word document

I can place images and other file types fine. but have been unable to place word documents, I save, save as, save as an older version of word. It is just appears to be loading, but becomes 'not responding' and I have to shut it down through task manager. I have been copying and pasting, but this is very unproductive. Please help. Thank you.

Hello Peter,
Thank you for all your help, I did not know you replied, so perhaps the email went into my spam.  I followed the instructions here: http://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/kb/troubleshoot-damaged-indesign-documents.html and did #8. It took a while, but I eventually found the culprit was a pasted image in the document causing trouble.
8. Check objects and graphics for damage.

  • InDesign CS4 crashes when placing Word document

    Hi,
I'm having a real problem placing a Word document into InDesign CS4. It crashes every time! I have found that if I disable the "import inline graphics" it successfully places the document. but enabling that option crashes InDesign.
I've tried saving as RTF, and even doing a simple copy-paste but the result is the same: InDesign crashes.
If you have an idea please let me know!
    Thanks,
    Ariel

Yes sir! The Word file that crashes CS4 is placed successfully in CS2. The saying "If it ain't broke don't fix it" comes to mind!
The only disadvantage is that each chapter is a separate file and in CS2 these need to be placed separately, whereas in CS4 (if it worked ;-)) they could all be placed in one go.
    Thanks Jongware,
    Ariel

  • InDesign crashing when placing a word doc

I am trying to place a word doc into InDesign and it keeps crashing. Tried restarting.  Tried breaking the doc into smaller part.   Still not working.

The only time I had a similar situation with a word document, I had to save it as plain text and place that into Indesign. Nothing else worked. The downside is you lose any formatting but at least you won't have to type everything from scratch. Make a copy of your file and give it a try.

  • Oversized text and lack of pages when placing a word document (.docx)

I'm reposting this, since the last one seemed to get lost in the jumble:
When placing text from a word document (.docx) indesign only gives me three pages for a 118 long document.  Also, those pages are blank, and to access the text, I have to delete a few blank lines.  When I do this however, the text is grossly oversized.  Changing the font does not help, as even on 6 pt, the text is much larger than it should be.  Help?  I've tweaked import options (although I may not know enough to diagnose the issue I am having), changed the format of the file (.doc, rtf) nothing seems to work.
I am working in Indesign CS5.5 and here is a link to the document I am working with:
    https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BzA9ILF0ZW-aVmlCV0hvekhHYTQ/edit?usp=sharing
Any help you could provide would be awesome.
    Thanks,
    -Julian Q.

The problem is the page size. It's tiny lee than an inch wide and a bit over an inch tall. I'm not sure what you set up, but what you have now seems to have been made much smaller with the Page tool, perhaps.
Set your ruler units in your prefs with nothing open to a system you are comfortable working in (the doc is set up in Picas, now. Do you know how to work in Picas?), then create a new file the size you really want.

  • Dell VENUE 11 PRO 7140 keeps crashing when closing a word document

    Hello all,
I'm having an issue with a VENUE 11 PRO 7140.
Every time that i try to close a word document, the computer crashes giving me this error: KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED.
On the eventviewer looks like TOASTER.EXE caused the problem...
I know that that executable belongs to Dell data backup so i uninstalled it since it's an enterprise environment and we back everything up. I tried closing a couple of word documents and it worked fine.
The issue happened again (BSOD) when i had the user logon and try to open one of her word documents..
The other problem that i have is that i do not have full time access to that PC since the user needs to work with it. Had the chance to spend a couple of hours today but it doesn't seem stable.
Another strange thing that might be related to that is that the App readiness service keeps stopping even though i configured it as automatic on startup and to restart after each failure...
Any ideas what can probably cause this? Anybody has had any similar issues with this kind of tablet?

  • When placing a Word document in a frame, the text over fills the frame boundaries.

When I attempt to place a Word document in an InDesign text frame, the text flows outside the boundaries of the frame. This also happens if I use the InDesign placeholder text.

  • InDesign CS5 crashes when saving new empty document.

It also crashes when printing, saving, resaving or exporting existing files. Many are converted files from Quark Xpress using Q2ID. Never had any problems until the past few weeks. Help!
I have renamed preference files and uninstalled and reinstalled five times. Still does it.

Best practice is to always export converted files to .idml immediately after the conversion, then open that and save as a new .indd. See Remove minor corruption by exporting

  • Indesign CS6 crashes when copying pages between documents

I have two documents and I want to copy 28 pages from one to the other. Indesign crashes on any form of attempt. What I tried so far:
    1. Copy pages per drag and drop, ID would then ask where to insert, I selected "at the end". Crash.
    2. Save both documents as IDML, then opened the IDMLs, saved as INDD (to erase possible document structure corruptions), closed and opened both INDDs again, then drag and drop. Crash.
    3. Selected the 28 pages from the source document, selected "Insert pages" from mini menu of pages panel, then set what pages to use, where to put ("At the end") and target (the other document). Crash
    4. Tried both, "Insert pages" and drag 'n drop, with different target position "At the beginning". Crash.
    5. Saved a copy of the source document, reduced it to contain only those 29 pages I want to copy, then drag and drop to target. Crash.
    6. Tried vice versa, means copy all target document's pages to the source document. Crash.
Any idea how I can get the pages over to the target? There is unfortunately no "Append pages from file" in the mini menu.
    TIA!

I would try another one with each of these documents.
Create a new document with 2 pages.
Name the master pages so, that their names are not conflicting with neither of these 2 document’s masters.
Delete every style in that empty document, also any swatch
No drag the pages of the first document into such an empty document.
Do the same step 1 to 4 with the second document in a NEW empty document.
Now you have 2 new documents. Take care that no conflicting master names appear.
In each of these documents create in each style panel a folder and drag all used styles in that folder.
    Save both documents
Try again to insert the pages of both documents.
Otherwise, it this does not work out, could you send me via private message the files or a link. I would check it with a Debugging Version of InDesign (InDesign DEV) I can use to find errors.

  • InDesign CS3 Crashes When Placing Illustrator CS3 Art

    Hi all-
I've been having some problems over the past week with InDesign CS3. Specifically each and every time I try to place an Illustrator CS3 element, the dialog says it is importing the art. Then the trouble starts - InDesign grinds for about 10 seconds and then I get an error message stating that "InDesign.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close."
When I click on details, I see that the error signature is "AppName: InDesign.exe AppVer: 5.0.3.662 ModName: adobepdfl.dll ModVer 8.1.0.1146 Offset: 001a1fcd"
I've already done the obvious - trashed my prefs files, then deleted the CS3 Suite (Master Collection if that matters) and reinstalled - still have the exact same issue. I even zapped the dll after the reinstall, and then reinstalled again - no luck.
This ONLY happens with native Illustrator art - .pdf, .eps, .PSD, .jpgs, etc can be placed with no issues. Yeah, I can save everything as an .eps, but that will take a lot of time to convert every asset.
I'm on Windows XP, Service Pack 3, running on a Lenovo Thinkpad T61 with 2 Gigs of physical memory. Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T7300 @ 2.00 GHz.
Any ideas? Thanks for any help, here!

  • InDesign CS6 Crashes When Placing Images

    Crash data: http://pastebin.com/CaBML9zw
This problem just started this weekend, but every time I try to place an image into this file, InDesign crashes. I've exported the project to an IDML file, then worked off of it, but it does the same thing. When I try to relaunch InDesign, it often will not open again & gives a "serious error" pop-up (apologies for not having the screenshot on here).
Could someone help me decipher this please? I'm about to throw things.
I'd really appreciate some help with this. Thank you!

Does it happen in other files withthe same image(s)? How about in a new user?

  • InDesign CC crashes when placing text

Hi, InDesign CC updated to latest version and noticed it crashes every time i try and place a text file onto the document. I have uninstalled and then used CC Cleaner, removing preferences and manually deleting the folder. Have tried this several times but with no success.
Here is a copy of the crash log: http://pastebin.com/icXisbfD

    Thanks

Does this happen in one file, or in all files? If only one file, it could be corrupted. Export as IDML and reopen in InDesign.

  • Indesign CS6 crashes when opening multiple documents

Only recently, Indesign has started crashing when I open multiple documents.
Nothing new has been installed on the computer as far as I know.
I've tried trashing the preferences, accessing the files locally, wiping the computer and diaognosing the iMac hardware... without success.
It's slightly more stable, as in it doesn't crash everytime now but instead more randomly than before.
Program has never crashed with one document open.
Interesting thing is if several files are open, then I close then individually, then close down fine. If I try to quit and close all of them in one go, Indesign crashes.
Also occasionally has problems displaying links, eg. displays a grey box instead of an eps file.
I have several crash log files in case someone is able to decipher them.

    1. Is there any reason to use eps? Avoid it use AI, PSD or PDF instead.
    2. Are all used fonts ok? What kind of fonts du you use?
    3. Which Mac OS X do you use?
Does it crash with alwayst the same files?
What does the file history tell you? Hold down the command key and got to InDesign > About InDesign… Does it tell you somewhat more specific, like missing plugins, severly damaged files and restored files, when (in which version) the files have been created first (helps often to export to IDML and open this again and save it as INDD and work with the new file.), has the problematic file been converted from another application (Quark Xpress or PageMaker), etc.

  • InDesign cs6 crashes when exporting objects with drop shadows to interactive PDF

I am using the trial version of InDesign CS6 on a mac OSX 10.7.4  I need to export my document as an interactive PDF. I have found that the export works fine so long as none of the objects within my document have a drop shadow. However, if I add a drop shadow to any object (text, images, or video) InDesign will crash when I try to export. I am adding the drop shadow by selecting the object and then choosing Object > Effects > Drop Shadow. Is there another method I should be using to add the shadow if I want to export to an Interactive PDF?

Hi Peter, thanks for the response. Yes, I have tried creating a new blank project and adding one text object with a drop shadow and then exporting to Interactive PDF, and I experienced  the same result. I tried replacing my preferences as you suggested and found that it did not have any affect.
I continued developing my InDesign document without using any drop shadows and began to experience the same type of crashing under two more circumstances. 1. When relinking assets in my Links panel. 2. When exporting to interactive PDF with interactive objects that are being clipped (I get a warning telling me I have clipped objects before I export; when I click export I experience the same crash.) I have tried exporting the same file to a print (non-interactive) PDF and experienced no crashing.
I thought I should mention that I am using a retina display mac book pro with 16GB RAM. Could my graphics cards or the configureation of my machine be causing my issue?
    Thanks so much,

  • InDesign CS6 crashes when I try to copy a graphic

I am working in CS6 with a document that was converted from CS4. I want to move a graphic from one spot in the document to another, but when I try to copy it, InDesign immediately crashes. Has anyone else had this problem?
I am working on a PC, and I believe the original file was created on a Mac.

It turns out the culprit was a bad font in the image. I opened the image in Illustrator and converted the font to outlines. That solved the problem! Incidentally, this one image/font problem (this image is used in a couple different manuals) also was causing InDesign to crash when I exported to PDF.
Adobe people, if you read this, it would be great if problematic fonts in images were detected by InDesign, like an error in the preflight panel similar to the linking and font errors currently there. I can't see a way to detect this easily now (how to narrow down which image is a problem when working with 50+ images in a document?) Is there a way that I don't know about?
