Indesign Data merge with multple amounts of images

Hello,
Allow me to illustrate what I'm trying to achieve:
I'm making name cards with name & language on them for about 100 people.
I know how to import the excel data for both text and images but here's the catch:
We're working with 4 images, for 4 languages respectively. In my data sheet I would have the languages the person speaks marked. I could link each of those to the image of the flag in excel and pull those into Indesign.
How can I set this up that it only pulls in the images of the languages that the person speaks AND in such a way that they align in the center. (So 3 images in case of 3 languages, aligned center, 1 for 1, aligned center)
Is this an easy thing to do?
All the help is appreciated!

Is this the sort of thing you want to do?
In Excel:
In ID:
After merge:
If that is what you want to do, then remove the empty frames post merge using a script from Harbs
Re: Indesign: remove all inline empty frames script?
If that isn't what you want...let us know.
Take care, Mike

  • Data merge with images! cannot get it to work

I have set up my spread sheet like i usually do for a data merge with an extra column  for the images with i called '@images-
my images i named the following way
    Macintosh HD:Users:myname:Desktop:test:imagesqrcode_AberdeenENG.png   it didnt work
    i tried
    Users:myname:Desktop:test:imagesqrcode_AberdeenENG.png  it didnt work
    i tried with slashes
i placed the images in the same file as my in design file and just named it qrcode_AberdeenENG.png that still didnt work
doesn anyone out there have a solution

Try placing the images in the same folder as the source file (the .txt file).
Then you should just be able to use the exact name of the image (no path required).
I wrote this up in a blog post many years ago (but it hasn't changed):

I went back to my source files for this example, and it still works in InDesign CS6.

  • Tip for Data Merge with Multiple Records (labels, etc.)

I have seen many InDesign Data Merge questions about how to create sheets of mailing labels, especially the problem of getting only one label per page, when you need 30 or more.
Adobe's instructions are poor and incomplete in that InDesign doesn't step out the records from a data source - it steps out the FRAMES that contain the data field placeholders.
That is why you only need to place a text or image frame once on a single page - during the datamerge, InDesign will create the additional FRAMES for each record, and it will create the pages required to hold them.
You do have to set the desired spacing on the
If you create the frame on a Master page, ID allows you to update the data source (when it changes) in the Data Merge tool panel.
These are very nice and robust features, but the documentation for them is confusing to many people.
You will find more great in-depth help  for Data Merge, with screen captures and attachments, here in the forum.

For a multiple record merge you need one set of placeholders, then set the margins and spacing in the merge options so the positioning is correct.
Warning: Using Preview in a multiple record merge will corrupt the file. If you press the preview button, Undo after looking at the preview, then merge without using preview.

  • Is there a way to name the .indd files created by a data merge with values in the CSV file

I have a data merge document that is set to single Record per Document page and 1 page per document.  In my CSV file I have a field for Part Number.  If I run a data merge with 10 records I end up with 10 .indd files.  I need a way so that the resulting .indd files are named the same value that is in the Part Number field.

Loic has provided a link for my original piece, and I've written up some follow-up pieces for indesignsecrets.com:
    http://indesignsecrets.com/data-merging-individual-records-separate-pdfs.php
    http://indesignsecrets.com/data-merging-individual-records-separate-pdfs-part-2-scripting. php
So there are several ways to get unique name PDFs from an indesign Data Merge. However, none of these 3 articles will truly answer your question of how to get unique indesign filenames using the database. I can see a practical purpose for this as merging business cards directly to PDFs is great, but I can be guaranteed that while on proof, there will be alts to the business cards that need to be done outside the merge, meaning specific records need to be exported to indesign files for further manipulation.

  • Indesign Data Merge Scripts

I am looking to create a script that will enable me to feed in variable data from a csv to indesign data merge.  I have the components built, with a column for quantity in the csv.  Our printing needs vary day by day, so multiple records don't quite fit w

Thanks SDesigns; the GREP feature in particular looks like it might work, assuming I can get the data to merge with a separator between each company. That's where I'm having trouble now; I can't seem to be able to merge a particular column from the CSV that has the company names into a paragraph of text within my document, as it only seems to let me merge in the first company name only. Do you know how I can achieve this, and additionally how I can get it to automatically insert any particular separator (as there are hundreds if not thousands of company names, manually typing in the separator could get very tedious)? Attached is a screenshot of what the final text looks like in the document, though it doesn't seem to let me "Update source" on the paragraph, which would make things much easier.Thank you very much for your time and help!

  • Would installing Cheetah or Raptor drives make inDesign data merge work faster?

Would installing Cheetah or Raptor drives make inDesign data merge work faster?

I think SSDs might turn out to be slower. There are some other posts about major slowdowns when the OS and user profile are on SSDs.
As a 32 bit program, ID can't adress all that extra RAM, so you won't affect the amount of swapping required. I don't really know how efficient an SSD is for constant read and write operations, but my undertanding is they work great for fast loading of things that don't change, but not so much for files that rewrite constantly.

  • InDesign - Data merge for generate complex invoice for 10 000 customers

Is InDesign is a good solution to generate invoice with data merge with complexe role like multiple item charges, etc.

    Frédéric Hébert

Data merge is strictly a simple tool. It cannot handle variable numbers of fields other than to delete blank lines.
It's great for things like address labels and directories.

  • Multiple records in Indesign Data merge

When I select the option for multiple records in InDesign Date Merge, I still only get one record on a page in preview. When I ask it to create a merged document, each item from the excell file is put on a separate page.  Why is this happening, I want 4 items on a page.

I figured out the problem.  The margins would have to be smaller for the page to accomodate multiple  records. Thanks for offering to help.

  • Can i use data merge with pdf images in indesign?

Hi need to do a data merge but with pdf's not jpg or tifs. I am having the result with jpgs but not with pdf's.
Can i do it with pdf's?

in fact that is not a problem because i have both pdfs same size and orientated, the only thing is that i cannot use the pdf docs for some reason.
eg. in the csv file i have (this is not working)
    Field 1                                      Field2
    '@background                          '@page
    Machintosh HD:bg1.pdf           Machintosh HD:page1.pdf
eg. in the csv file i have (this works)
    Field 1                                      Field2
    '@background                          '@page
    Machintosh HD:bg1.psd           Machintosh HD:page1.psd
I would like to use the pdf file is there a different way to do so?

  • Indesign Data Merge repeating images, mixing up data, etc.

I'm using ID CC and using data merge for a catalog.
when i create the merged document it repeats some of the images, uses data for other products and repeats it.
I've started from scratch, I've avoided the "preview" mode like the plague, I've used CSV and TXT.  I've searched for line breaks in Excel.  What am i doing wrong?

"Show Import Options". , this will tell you what sort of data file you are uploading
@Shiv – only to an extend. InDesign cannot see a difference between Unicode UFT-8 or Unicode UTF-16 at this point, it just detects Unicode.
CSV is an old, can we really say, "file format"?
It's basically a text file with a csv suffix and some rules, that are or are not implemented. InDesign tries to detect the rules: what character for separating the fields? What character for a line of fields ending?
InDesign does not verify very much, if there is a orderly grid-like structure in the fields (a row and column structure) with an equal number of "cells" on every row. And a header row that holds the discription. In fact it cannot "see" a header, because the csv-"format" cannot provide a hint…
CSV is not a file format, see it more as a lose convention and not standardized very much…
I think Adobe should provide its own format for merging data and a converter tool together with InDesign where you could output to and input from a InDesign table with a header row using whatever formatting is available in InDesign.

  • InDesign Data Merge / Image Frame Options

Hi! I am learning Data Merge and am trying to set-up some product sheets using it. I have done pretty well so far but have an issue with the way images are importing into the different image frames. There are a few different image frames on the layout (main product image, tech drawing, tech icons, etc.), and I need each image frame to have different frame options set.
So far using the general "Frame Fitting Options" for each has worked for all imported images except for my tech icons (which I can get to import correctly if I choose "Content Placement Options > Fit Frames to Images" from the Data Merge side menu --but when I do this, it applies to all image frames on the page and not just the one selected (which does not work overall).
Is there another option to get the icon image frames to "Fit Frame to Image" automatically without using the Content Placement Options from the Data merge menu? Is there a way to use the Content Placement Options so it works for individual frames vs all on the layout?
    Any help is much appreciated!
    Liz

Within the data merge, the frame fitting options apply to all frames that contain variable images, so if you want one variable image to fit image to frame, and another variable image to preserve its size, that cannot be done in the main file, but by manipulating the resulting merge file as P Spier suggests. With Data Merge, there are 8 ways an image can fit inside a frame - see the linked pdf: http://colecandoo.files.wordpress.com/2012/08/framefit.pdf
This is further complicated when importing ai or pdf images that contain different possible sizes to import (e.g. trim box, bleed box, bounding box, etc). If the "show import options" dialog box is used when placing an image into a data merge file, the settings used in those import options are maintained in the file for the importing of any pdf/ai files via the data merge. What this means is that a data merge containing pdf/ai images can go haywire quickly if the import options change.
There are some tricks that can be used to control a size of an image in a data merge, provided the images are pdf/ai. If images are being placed by bounding box size in the import options, a way is by drawing a no fill/stroke box behind (or on another layer) of the pdf/ai - this will be used to define the actual size of the image, instead of the top left/bottom right of the image. Similarly, if images are being placed by media box, a similar technique can be used by making the illustrator artboard the size used to define the incoming image size.
There are also other ways to control the way an image grows/shrinks when importing via the data merge. I have written about that elsewhere, but the trick relies on using making the variable image an anchored object in a larger text frame and controlling its coordinates with text and textbox formatting (e.g. top/bottom/center align; left/right/center, or tab position): Centering “fit frame to images” using InDesign CS6 | Colecandoo!

  • InDesign Data Merge problem with field names

    Hi to all.
I am trying to create a sales catalog with data merge. I have product name, description, old price, new price and image. However, when I select my .csv file as data source, InDesign recognizes different fields as one and puts them all together. I tried copying and pasting to new spreadsheet,  retyping the info myself, saving as tab delimited and as comma delimited file. To better illustrate, here are exemplary screenshoots:
Please help, I don't understand what I am doing wrong. I'm a regular InDesign user for almost a decade, but I haven't used DataMerge until now, never needed it. I have basic knowledge in Excel, so if I did something wrong there please inform me (do I have to tell it somehow to "split" them into fields?).
    Thank you in advance!

I would recommend to test with different export types in Excel like:
Tab-Divided txt files instead of csv or with different decoding.
When you have learned which is working fine, you can select this always in the future.
(There is also a possibility inside InDesign to change the type between tab separated text and CSV. In my experience it depends very much on the Excel version which would work. Microtrash has a bad history in localizing their programs, e.g. here in German, in numbers we write coma instead of a point, a point of a coma, so decided MS to exchange it every where on the Mac version with the outcome, that CSV files are not coma separated but dot separated and are not working on any data base import. So I can only use tab separated files.)

You can make three separate ID files and then combine them into a book. The book file is merely a super set of the individual ID files.

  • Data Merge with images - how to link/embed?

My data merge is working beautifully but I cannot figure out how to properly include images in the data source so they appear in the target document. I'd love a tutorial on this. Anyone?

You can get detailed info about data merge or any content on indesign help itself
Add image fields in the data source file
By adding image fields to the data source file, you can allow a different image to appear on each merged record. For example, when you merge documents that include information from various companies, you may want to include an image of each company’s logo as part of the merge.
    Open the data source file.
At the beginning of the data field name, type an “at” symbol (@) to insert text or paths that refer to image files.
The @ symbol is required only in the first line; subsequent lines should include the image paths. Paths, which are case-sensitive, must follow the naming conventions of the operating system in which they’re stored.
(Windows) Example of image references in data source file
    Name                    Age                                       Photos
    Bill Tucker            36                                          C:\Photos\BillTucker.jpg
    Dat Nguyen         53                                          C:\MyDocuments\dat.gif

  • Data Merge with InDesign doc that's 4up

I've just experimented with an InDesign document that we want to print 4 up (postcard) and we'd like our addresses to merge and print in the mailing area. When I've tried it, however, it's putting the same address on each of the four cards. Any way around this? The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is to split my excel address list into four equal groups, name them each a different name (addresses 1, addresses 2, etc) and then add the merge information for each doc on each on of the cards.
    Doable? or no?
    Susan

Unfortunately, the designer before me (I work at a print shop) lost the manual. I've searched the web. I've followed the instructions in InDesign help and also Excel help. I've tried numerous times to do this, changing different parameters hoping that it will succeed. As for putting only one placeholder on the page, it's not cost effective in printing to print a postcard one up on a digital printer. Tons of wasted space. FYI... data merge may be new to me, but no need to be flip about your response. I've been a designer for over 27 years, certainly no newbie.
