Indesign desktop icons - can they be altered?

I want to distinguish between documents created in different versions of Indesign on my desktop.
I have clients running different versions and have lots of duplicate documents saved down to various versions (I work on their servers and .idml files are glitchy)
Short of colour coding all the files - I just wondered if there was any way of making a CS4 document have a CS4 desktop icon instead of a CS6?
Thanks

  • Sidebar icons: can they be changed?

I've added .Trash to my Finder sidebar so I can drag items to the trash.
I would like to change the blue folder icon to a Trash bin (and wouldn't mind changing the other sidebar icons as well).
Is it possible to change them? And if so, how?
    Thanks!
(I own CandyBar, but not sure it allows you to change an individual folder icon).

The items in the Sidebar are aliases to the original item. If the original item has a custom icon that icon will be displayed in the Sidebar when you drag the item there. You can use GetInfo to change individual folder icons. Find something that has an icon you like, do GetInfo on it, click the wee little icon at the top to select it (a very faint blue line appears when the icon is selected), and select Copy. Then do GetInfo on the folder you want to have the new icon, select the wee little generic folder icon at the top, and Paste.

  • PDFMaker navigation and magnification defaults - can they be altered?

When I create a pdf using PDFMaker in a Word file, I want the resulting pdf file to default to Magnification "Fit Page" and Navigation Tab "Bookmarks Panel and Page". I do not want to have to change the magnification or the navigation manually because when I am combining multiple pdf files, I end up having to set the mag and nav for every document inside the combined doc, even if the original pdf has already been altered to the mag/nav I want. Is this even possible?

    Short answer = nope.
Your success path? Use Acrobat to post-process as needed.

  • Desktop Icons Arrangement/Location

Please excuse me, but I have been searching and cannot find an answer...which I am pretty sure is here because its basic.
How can I change the alignment of my desktop icons. They are all on the right and I would like them in another area of the screen. How can I lock them there?
Thanks and I apologize about the elementary question.
    S

You can Label them by right-clicking in the folder and choosing a Label color.
And you can change their color completely by using something like http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/15288/folderbrander.
Or if you can find a set of colored folders online, you can change them manually by using this method.

  • Desktop Icons: Reset Positions?

I usually have 2 monitors connected to my mac, with icons on both. Today, I had to unplug one, and all the icons from the 2nd monitor appeared on the 1st. Now when I re-connect the 2nd monitor, the icons are all still on the 1st monitor, and the icons that were previously on the 2nd monitor are not in their original positions anymore. Is there any way to put them back? Thanks.

My experience has been that once something moves desktop icons around, they'll stay where they got put (with the exception of icons for disks or hard drives) unless you move them again.
Back in the days of OS 9 and earlier there were small utility apps available which could be set to record the locations of icons at a specific instant in time, and could then return them to those places later on after they got moved. Handy in the case of some games which ran in full screen, but changed the resolution dramatically, leaving the desktop icons crammed into the upper left quadrant.
I haven't seen such mentioned for OSX, though to be honest I haven't looked for such. Even so, the utility would have to have already been run so it could record what was where before asking it to restore positions.

    1. You did not get an error message telling you that your iPhoto library was getting full. You got a message telling you that your HD was getting full, right?
OS X needs about 10 gigs of hard drive space for normal OS operations - things like virtual memory, temporary files and so on.
Without this space your Mac will slow down as the OS hunts for space on the disk, files will be fragmented, also slowing things down, apps will crash and the risk of data corruption - that is damage to your files, photos, music - increases exponentially.
Your first priority is to make more space on that HD. Nothing else can be done until you do.
Purchase an external HD and move your Photos and Music to it. Both iPhoto and iTunes can run perfectly well with the Library on an external disk.
Your Library has been damaged from being run on an overfull disk.
How much free space on it now?

My desktop icons mysteriously moved from the left to the right of the screen, and scrambled the order. When I try to drag them back to the left, they pop right back to the right when I release the mouse. What can I do to place them where I want them on the screen?

What do you see in the window when you click on those?  A blank, black window?  An exclamation mark?  What?

  • I can no longer access Yahoo from desktop icon; attempt to report this to Firefox fails. Help.

I have always been able to access Yahoo from my desktop icon. In the last few days, this has not worked 90% of the time (once in a while I can get through). I need to access it through my Verizon account. Why is this suddenly happening - for years I have been able to use the Yahoo icon.
And when I tried to send a help message to Firefox it refused to go through - the green line would go over and over and never finish.

What do you mean when you say you "can no longer access these sites?" Does that mean you can't connect to those sites in your web browser, or that they aren't showing up in iWeb?
If the latter, note that your iWeb data is all entirely stored in a hidden file. In the Finder, choose Go -> Go To Folder and paste the following path into the window that opens:
    ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb
In that folder, you will find a single file, called Domain. That's got all the data for all your iWeb sites. If that file is missing, or if it has become corrupt, you will need to restore it from an earlier backup.
As for replacing iWeb, either Sandvox or RapidWeaver should work. Which works best will depend on your own tastes. Note that neither is capable of fully importing iWeb sites, as those sites will have a lot of content that is copyrighted by Apple. • In Finder Prefs, does unchecking "Show these items on the Desktop" mean certain connected drives won't "mount" at all -- or they WILL mount but simply not appear as Desktop icons?

In the Finder Preferences panel, when one unchecks a category of "items" (e.g. "Hard Disks," or "CDs, DVDs and iPods," etc.), does that mean that items of that type will not even "mount" as a connected external drive when they get plugged in to the computer? Or, alternately, DO these external devices "mount," and can be accessed via various menu commands or keyboard shortcuts, but it's just that they won't appear on the Desktop as a "Desktop icon"?
The terminology used in the Prefs panels makes me think that they DO mount, they just don't "appear" as icons. Otherwise, the Prefs panel would say "Mount these items as connected drives when plugged in."
    Right?
If one unchecks a category, and then connects or inserts a device of that category to the Mac, and then unceremoniously unplugs it from the computer, will one get an error message saying (forget the exact words) "Don't disconnect external drives before first Ejecting them!" Or...not?

If iTunes is already running when I plug in the iPod, then I briefly get the "Connected - Eject before disconnecting" message, but then it goes away after a few seconds, and the iPod screen reverts to the normal home screen, which means I can unplug it without ejecting it.
So the three potential statuses are:
    1. Plug in iPod and never launch iTunes = iPod need to be ejected before disconnecting.
    2. First plug in iPod and subsequently launch iTunes = get unwanted "connected" message until the moment that iTunes is running, at which point it disappears.
    3. First launch iTunes and then plug in iPod = iPod briefly gives "connected" message, but then reverts to home page.
So, it seems that having iTunes open in these settings will (after a brief period at most, or immediately) allow me to unplug the iPod without "Ejecting" it first.
However...I don't want to launch iTunes! The whole point is to just be able to plug in and unplug the iPod without having to fiddle with anything on the Mac. My original problem was that I had to "Eject" the iPod in order to unplug it -- but if the only way to solve that problem is to launch iTunes, then all I've done is replace one problem with another.
I don't want to have to launch iTunes or have it running, now or ever. I just want to recharge my iPod.
So, while we certainly have learned a lot so far (and thanks for your patience!), I don't want to end up with a different problem than the one I started with.
So, the amended question is now:
Is there a way I can simply plug in and unplug my iPod to my Mac for the purposes of recharging only, without having to either "Eject" the iPod from the Mac or having to launch iTunes (manually or automatically)?

  • Desktop shortcuts to web pages don't have the correct icon, can this be corrected?

I just upgraded from IE to Firefox and it's really working well. The only problem is all the shortcuts to websites on my desktop have the Firefox icon. They had their correct icons under IE how can I get the correct icons back? My computer is running Windows XP

If you're using Internet Explorer as your default browser, you can create a shortcut via drag & drop and it will take on the web site's favicon if there is one. FireFox just gives it the default icon for the browser.
It's certainly not a deal breaker (this is one of the VERY few things that's better on IE) but it would be helpful if FF's drag & drop shortcuts could also take on the site's favico automatically.
This add-on https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/9548 or cor-el's solution are ok for those whose shortcuts are more static in nature. However, I often drag a shortcut to the desktop for a site that I'll visit later on (because my bookmarks are a mess LOL), but will eventually delete the shortcut after visiting the site again, usually within several days. In my case, it's not worth the extra effort to manually save and assign the favicon for each shortcut, so it would be nice if this could happen automatically like it does with IE.

  • How can you lock the desktop icon size?

On my Macbook Pro (10/6.7) the icons on the desktop sometimes change size. I'm not doing anything deliberate to cause this. When the icons change size, I can use View Options to make them the right size again, but it's a pain to have to keep doing that, especially since some icons don't always return to their original positions on the desktop. Is there any to prevent the desktop icons from changing size?

They shrink when you're on the desktop and "pinch" two fingers on the trackpad closer together.  If you "spread" two fingers apart, they'll get bigger.
You can disable in System Preferences > trackpad > Two Fingers > uncheck Pinch Open & Close.

  • Can't drag desktop icons & other problems

Hi.. I cannot drag my desktop icons nor items from a folder to DT. When this happened, I lost printing from my Lexmark E120N, my memory chips were listed as 68k and 28 k when they are 1 gig & 2 gig. That seems to have cleared up. I also cannot copy anything nor paste anything. When attempting to use Tech Tool 5, it opens, but is frozen. I ran it from the install disk & it said everything was fine! Any help will be greatly appreciated.... TIA, Jack PS: I repaired permissions also.

    HI Jack,
You booted from your Apple install disk and the hard disk "*appears to be ok*? Did you check the S.M.A.R.T status? Here's how.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
Also, run the Apple Hardware Test
If you can, make sure your important files are backed up.

  • Can't move desktop icons around

    Hello,
I have a MacBook Pro with OS X 10.10.2 Yosemite, and when I try to move my desktop icons around the desktop they snap back to where they were before I tried to move them.  I have tried changing settings and restarting my computer.
    Cheers,
    Adam

Hi. This doesn't resolve the problem on my end. The icons still can't be re-arranged or moved around. Sure, they will adjust to "Set by Sort", but I still can't drag them around, say from one folder into another. They are fixed to their spot.

  • All my desktop icons are Adobe Reader icons, can't access related files

I was trying to open a file this morning, and when a pop-menu asked what application I wanted to choose (from a list) to open it, I clicked on Adobe Reader - just as a guess.   After that,  just about all my desktop icons are Adobe icons, and when I click on them, the pop up menus says I can't access the file.   These icons also show up on my menu of all my MS Office programs like Outlook, Word, Excel,  etc.
Tech support at Adobe recommended I use System Restore, but it also is now an Adobe icon, so I can't open it.    If anyone can help reverse this, I'd greatly appreciate it.
    Thanks,
    David

    Hi,
This also happened to me this morning. Now all my icons are PDF symbols and Reader opens when I try to open any other program. I uninstalled Reader it and it fixed itself but when I reinstalled the program the same issue occurred.
I wanted to make PDF reader the default application when openning PDF's vs. Distiller, tinkered and broke my computer.
Any clues on how to bring everything back to normaL?
