Indesign document to ePub Conversion

Hi,
Please can anyone help me to get a solution to convert Indesign document to ePub file using indesign plug-in development?
Thanks
Ashok

You set the indents and spacing in the Paragraph Styles panel under the Indents and Spacing tab. First Line Indent, Space Before/After. You will need two styles if the first par is not indented and the subsequent ones are.
There is an InDesign ePub forum.

  • Problem export Indesign document to epub

    I get the following message everytime when I try to export an Indesign document to epub.
    "  The file was exported but one or more problems were detected:
    Resource: 1 missing
    Macintosh HD:Ap…n
    CS6.app:Contents:MacOS:template.css"
    Can someone tell me what it means and what I can do to correct this.
    Thanks

    Your InDesign CS6 file probably was created in an earlier version where the CSS file created was handled in a different way. It's associated with a "template.css" file that InDesign cannot find.
    Choose File > Export > EPUB. Go to the Advanced panel. In the CSS Options section, select "template.css" in the Additional CSS section, and click Delete.

  • Exporting InDesign document to epub

    InDesign exports documents to ePub. It works well.
    But afterwards the document needs more formatting. I have read the Adobe document entitled 'Producing ePub Documents from InDesign' but I am not able to open the file (after unzipping the archive) so that any of the existing xhtml coding is visible.
    Does anyone have any further documentation regarding producing ePub files?

    From InDesign 6.0 to 6.0.3, there were issues with font embedding, but they were quite easily overcome by editing the EPUB file (see fix here: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/330027). With 6.0.4, the font embedding feature is broken. Not all the type faces are copied into the Fonts folder. The CSS file doesn't reference all the type faces used and the encryption.xml file doesn't reference them either. It's possible to fix the EPUB file so that the fonts are embedded, but it's a huge pain, so stick with 6.0.3 if you're serious about EPUB publishing.
    As for using the PDFXML Inspector, I wasn't detailed enough in my explanation (sorry to create that confusion). When you open an XML or XHTML file with PDFXML Inspector, extra breaks are inserted in order to make the code easier to read.
    So the following code...
    <p class="body"><span class="generated-style">Ehene nemquunto tet, omnit untium aut aut molupta temquia saperum venis aut dit, </span><span class="italic">conem</span><span class="generated-style"> dolut am cus rehendiatur? Ducitibusam et qui culpa dolum volore provitaque sit accum rerspelit fugia ped ma </span><span class="italic">velicipsanis</span><span class="generated-style"> consequ aturibus dolum laut a dolest, cuptis es dolorro ma aliam sit optatur, eos alique se veris cus in repellabo. Aquiasp </span><span class="bold">icaborerae</span><span class="generated-style">. Nat as sum arum harchici audanis et verrore henimoluptas utecepuda ped que odignimo delit voluptatat quosa etur?</span></p>
    becomes...
    <p class="body">
    <span class="generated-style">
    Ehene nemquunto tet, omnit untium aut aut molupta temquia saperum venis aut dit,
    </span>
    <span class="italic">
    conem
    </span>
    <span class="generated-style">
    dolut am cus rehendiatur? Ducitibusam et qui culpa dolum volore provitaque sit accum rerspelit fugia ped ma
    </span>
    <span class="italic">
    velicipsanis
    </span>
    <span class="generated-style">
    consequ aturibus dolum laut a dolest, cuptis es dolorro ma aliam sit optatur, eos alique se veris cus in repellabo. Aquiasp
    </span>
    <span class="bold">
    icaborerae
    </span>
    <span class="generated-style">
    . Nat as sum arum harchici audanis et verrore henimoluptas utecepuda ped que odignimo delit voluptatat quosa etur?
    </span>
    </p>
    The line breaks are rendered as spaces in the EPUB file, which is not always a problem. But it can be a problem, for example, if a bold word is followed by a period at the end of a sentence. In that case, an extra space will be added between the bold word and the period.
    I just discovered that you can overcome this issue if you turn off the "Pretty Printing" option by choosing View > XML > Pretty Printing. Do this before opening an EPUB file and making edits to it.
    So thanks to Jeremy, I looked into PDFXML Inspector a little deeper and now I recommend it for editing EPUB files! It's not as user-friendly and robust as a professional XML editor, but it gets the job done for free.

  • Can multiple articles be in one indesign document?

    I have an indesign document with multiple articles in it. I made the articles using the Articles panel. How can I add these articles to a folio? When I add an article to a folio using the folio builder panel, it adds the entire document, even though I've used the Articles panel to specify that, say, pages 2-5 are an article named "Family Matters."  Does an article have to be a separate indesign document in order to be added to a folio?
    On a more general level, I haven't seen anything in the DPS literature that explains what an article is, what can/can't be an article, etc. I think that would help me. Thanks to anyone who can answer this.

    Currently it is one article per INDD document. (Two INDD if you intend to do dual orientation)  The "articles" panel is directed more toward epub and html export.
    The concept of the"article" (in terms of the Digital Publishing Suite) was alot easier to understand when it was previous called a "stack" in the prerelease.  The concept is that each page in your article stacks on top of eachother to form one article.  You article InDesign file contains all the pages in that particle "stack" .
    Think of it in terms of a magazine.  Each "article" has its own section in the viewer and thus is own InDesign document (consisting of all the pages for that particular article).  All these different articles or InDesign documents come together to make one "folio" or edition of your magazine.
    My suggestion would be to get familar with the workflow to understand what is and isn't support from Indesign.  Some great videos are on the "getting started with the DPS" page

  • Video Formats in Pages to Epub Conversion

    I have included (.m4v) videos in my Pages document and then converted to EPUB. These show up fine when I load the epub directly to the iPad.
    However when I try and upload to the Apple iBookstore I am told the videos are in .mov format which the iBookstore doesn't want.
    Sure enough when I look at the epub files (in Sigil) the videos are all described as .mov. Even editing the files in Sigil then has no effect.
    Anyone know why Pages to Epub conversion puts the videos back into ".mov" format rather than leave them as ".m4v"? The videos were created in iMovie and exported as iphone .m4v files.

    This is what Pages User Guides says:
    Pages accepts any QuickTime or iTunes file type, including the following:
    MOV
    MP3
    MPEG-4
    AIFF
    AAC
    Maybe you should convert the m4v to something else? You could try to change the file extension to .mp4

  • Acrobat X Pro - can you export to a editable InDesign document?

    I have a few pdf files containing multiple pages which I have got corrupted indesign files of. Does anyone know if the 5.5 version and X Pro can export the pdf back to a working indesign file?

    There is no way to export an InDesign file from any version of Acrobat.
    That said, there is pretty good (but not inexpensive) software from Recosoft called PDF2ID which can CONVERT PDF files to InDesign files. Conversion implies that it can do a pretty good job in most cases.
    http://www.recosoft.com/products/pdf2id/
    According to the product description, "PDF2ID recreates the intended construction and layout of the document by forming paragraphs; applying styles; regrouping independent graphic elements; extracting images; creating tables; recovering annotations and other elements automatically. PDF2ID converts every page in a PDF file to an equivalent page in the resulting InDesign document."

  • Exporting InDesign Book to Epub (general questions)

    Re: InDesign CC
    http://www.mobipocket.com/dev/article.asp?BaseFolder=prcgen&File=opfguides.htm
    http://www.mobipocket.com/dev/article.asp?BaseFolder=prcgen&File=cover.htm
    I've created a 366 page book using about 32 individual .indd files and have some general exporting-to-epub questions.
    1. Images.
    My images are placed .ai and .psd files that have names I can understand, such as picture-of-this.ai and picture-of-that.psd. When InDesign exports to epub, the images are renamed to something that a species whose native language is binary can understand. For example, this and that get renamed to 12345.jpg and 67890.jpg. And then there is also a funky naming convention that keeps the original name but adds _fmt.jpeg to it.
    Is it possible for me to export to epub and keep original file names?
    2. content.opf metadata
    Ultimately my epub needs to be converted into Kindle format. Amazon provides a Kindle Previewer that converts the file into their required .mobi format and that works, but some minor customization is required to get it to work right. The minor customizations include assigning the cover page, the table of contents (toc), and in my opinion, an even more important start page.
    My cover page, toc, and start page exist as individual .indd files.
    According to the mobipocket references (provided above), I need to add a few items to the content.opf file:
    For the cover:
    <metadata> <meta name="cover" content="my-cover-image" /> </metadata>
    <manifest> <item href="MyCoverImage.jpg" id="my-cover-image" media-type="image/jpeg" /> </manifest>
    For the table of contents:
    <guide> <reference type="toc" title="Table of Contents" href="mytoc.html"/> </guide>
    For the start page:
    <guide> <reference type="start" title="Start here" href="starthere.html"/> </guide>
    So, I can use Dreamweaver easily enough to open the content.opf file and manually insert those codes, but is there a way I can pre-code their key values into the InDesign page so that they are automatically placed in the proper positions on export?

    Hi Michael.
    That's a good suggestion about inserting jpg's into the InDesign document and then exporting to epub. I've done that before and it's worked quite well, especially with consideration to file size. However, this particular book has over 130 graphics and it's also going to the printing press... so I'm trying to keep my workload to be as efficient as possible. So you wouldn't have known that, and again, that's a great suggestion.
    I have not been able to get that plugin to work, and it's also no longer necessary. Kindle has a previewer that automatically converts the file to .mobi format, and allows the user to view the .mobi file through viewing screens that represent the Kindle device:
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?ie=UTF8&docId=1000765261
    Thanks for the info on the ALT text. I need to do that.... I've also looked through the File Info window tabs and did not find any area that seemed to allow me to enter that information.
    I have previously created and published on Kindle one book that was one single InDesign file, and as you suggested, had the cover and TOC with everything else. Unfortunately, there too, I had to manually enter the cover, start, and toc code using Dreamweaver.
    It looks like at this time there's no easy way to get around manually updating the .html files.
    Thanks for making the time to reply.

  • Is there any way to get the height/width of an image before importing it in the indesign document.

    Hi All,
    I need to obtain an image's attributes such as dimensions (height, width in pixels) without placing image in indesign document.
    I have full path of the image (say abc.jpg is stored at c:\my pic\abc.jpg).
    I have obtained the IDFile for this image, tried getting size using GetFileSize() which correctly return size in bytes.
    Is there any way to get the height/width of image without importing it in the indesign document.
    Please, give me some hints. I have spent quite a lot time digging in CHM. I have searched in FileUtils, IDFile API's but found no method which serves this purpose.
    At this point I am clueless where to search next.
    Any help will be appriciated.
    Just a point to mention, I am able to get image height and width for an image in indesign doc though Its not my requirement.
    Thnx,
    D.

    You might be able to examine the contents of the PlaceGun after calling kImportAndLoadPlaceGunCmdBoss without actually placing the image in a document. Not sure, but would be worth looking at.
    Otherwise you will probably have to write platform specific code, ideally with a generic platform-independant wrapper (see SDKSamples/paneltreeview/PlatformFileSystemIterator).
    For the Mac, look at CGImageGetWidth() etc., not sure what the best option is for windows.
    Perhaps Quicktime could provide you with a platform independant solution.

  • How to embed data into an InDesign Document

    Hello everybody,
    I'm porting a QuarkXTension to InDesign CS3 on PC but, maybe, I've found a showstopper...
    The current xtension writes some collected data into a document slug that is retrieved by an external application simply scanning the content of the file.
    I need to maintain the same way with InDesign but I've discovered that the persistent data added to a document workspace doesn't stay all together when is more than few KBytes (everything seems to be ok until 2 KBytes but that's too little) inside the InDesign document but is scattered on many locations. Of course this makes the work of the external application impossible.
    Is there any way to command/force inDesign to write the persistent data insidde the file in one single chunk?
    I understand this is something unusual but that's the way that complex publishing workflow works and can't be changed in that part.
    Thanks a lot in advance for any help.
    Best regards,
    Luca Severini

    I think I have found a possible solution to embed my data in a way readable by an external application. To use the XMP toolkit.
    Very interesting the fact XMP Toolkit includes the source of a simple command line tool that parses the xmp embedded into InDesign file.
    The same source can be easily modified to get all the objects contained in the document aka database.
    Bye
    Luca

  • On Windows Platform, encounters error when trying to open an Indesign document created from MAC

    Hi all,
    On Windows Platform, encounters error when trying to open an Indesign document in INDD format created from Mac. Error received "Either the file does not exist, you do not have permission, or the file may be in use by other application". I am currently using Adobe Indesign CC 9.2 Trial version.
    Kindly advise how can i open this document on windows platform and allows me to edit the document.
    Thanks!
    With Rgds,

    Normally there is no problem to open any INDD opening on Windows, when created on the Mac.
    But Mac user are often not aware on the naming limitations. A file name must not contain /, \, |, :
    It should not contain any extended character, it is not a primary problem but will be, if something links to that file, so avoid also: ÄÖÜäöüß+&
    You can use all other non A-Z a-z, 0-9 and - and  _
    I personally would also recommend to avoid spaces.
    This is valid for the INDD file itself but also for all linked content.
