InDesign document window blinking!

Document window keeps blinking interrupting workflow. Thought it was a CC 2014 bug but I went back to ID CC and it started again. It's driving me crazy. The border of the window blinks and causes a hesitation in whatever you're trying to do. I can't work this way. Ready to toss the computer!!!

My IndDesign CC 2014 is doing exactly the same thing. Intermittent — almost rhythmic — blinking of the document window frame coinciding with a deactivation of whatever I'm trying to do when it happens. For instance, I try to select a font, so I click open the font menu and get ready to click on the desired font when suddenly the document window blinks and the font menu closes. Or, say I'm creating a text box. I select the text tool, click and hold at the top left corner and begin dragging to the bottom left corner. Then, the document window blinks again and the box I'm trying to create disappears. I've tried trashing preference and saved data, clearing the InDesign cache, and shutting down Suitcase Fusion 5. None of it has helped. Filing a report now.

  • How can one resize a inDesign Document Window without moving Document's position?

    I've searched high and low for an answer to this habit that inDesign has. Am I the only one that finds this annoying?
    You go to adjust the size of your document window to move it out of the way to get to something else on your desktop, and instead of keeping the document in place and just resizing the window, it moves the document with the resize. Not sure if I'm putting this in a way that people can understand me. Say I have two inDesign files open side by side and I zoom in on an area and adjust my view of the page. Then I go to the other inDesign document and adjust the view by grabbing the bottom right hand corner of the window and moving it to where I want it. The whole document then moves with it! I desire it not to, so now I have to waste time by using the hand tool to move it back into place. Illustrator doesn't act like this. Photoshop doesn't act like this. Only inDesign. Does this harken back to the PageMaker days? Am I missing a preference somewhere I need to change? Or is it just the way of things and I'm stuck with it?

    Hi,
    The simplest would be to set the application preferences in the script.
    Like this :
    -- *** set prefs ****
    tell application "AppleWorks 6"
          activate
          set oldPrefs to its preferences
          copy oldPrefs to tPrefs
          tell tPrefs
                set old version warning to false --doesn't show the old version warning alert
                set converted file suffix to true -- append “[v6.0]” to documents converted from older formats
                set locked file warning to false
                set paint reduction warning to false
          end tell
          set preferences to tPrefs
    end tell
    -- *** end set prefs ****
    --**** your script, example ***
    set tfiles to choose file with multiple selections allowed
    tell application "AppleWorks 6"
          repeat with i in tfiles
                open i
                tell front document
                      -- do something
                end tell
          end repeat
    end tell
    --**** end  your script ***
    -- *** reset prefs ****
    tell application "AppleWorks 6" to set preferences to oldPrefs

  • Document windows jump

    I just upgraded to Yosemite on my MacBook Pro running a dual monitor setup (MacBook & Cinema Display) and now when I have my document window on the Cinema Display if I do any thing such as select an object etc. the window jumps so its top half is on the lower part of the screen while the bottom half of the window goes off the bottom of the screen. If I move it back up it just jumps back when I try to do something again. Help!

    I have the exact same issue CDLeaver, and think this might be a bug, where a retina display laptop is connect to a non-retina second monitor.
    What I discovered is that when I move my secondary screen so that it is positioned above the primary macintosh screen, the InDesign document window on the second monitor continuously repositions itself, it continuously jumps when you move it into position and then start working on it.
    Once I lined up the tops of both monitors in the System Preferences > Display Preferences, the problem went away.

  • On Windows Platform, encounters error when trying to open an Indesign document created from MAC

    Hi all,
    On Windows Platform, encounters error when trying to open an Indesign document in INDD format created from Mac. Error received "Either the file does not exist, you do not have permission, or the file may be in use by other application". I am currently using Adobe Indesign CC 9.2 Trial version.
    Kindly advise how can i open this document on windows platform and allows me to edit the document.
    Thanks!
    With Rgds,
    Fiona Choy

    Normally there is no problem to open any INDD opening on Windows, when created on the Mac.
    But Mac user are often not aware on the naming limitations. A file name must not contain /, \, |, :
    It should not contain any extended character, it is not a primary problem but will be, if something links to that file, so avoid also: ÄÖÜäöüß+&
    You can use all other non A-Z a-z, 0-9 and - and  _
    I personally would also recommend to avoid spaces.
    This is valid for the INDD file itself but also for all linked content.

  • Is there a way to find text within InDesign documents in a search using windows environment?

    We are working in Windows and transitioning from using Word to InDesign for our documents.  InDesign documents do not show up in the results when trying to search for a file name or file contents. How can we search for specific text within our InDesign documents?  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Is there any way to get the height/width of an image before importing it in the indesign document.

    Hi All,
    I need to obtain an image's attributes such as dimensions (height, width in pixels) without placing image in indesign document.
    I have full path of the image (say abc.jpg is stored at c:\my pic\abc.jpg).
    I have obtained the IDFile for this image, tried getting size using GetFileSize() which correctly return size in bytes.
    Is there any way to get the height/width of image without importing it in the indesign document.
    Please, give me some hints. I have spent quite a lot time digging in CHM. I have searched in FileUtils, IDFile API's but found no method which serves this purpose.
    At this point I am clueless where to search next.
    Any help will be appriciated.
    Just a point to mention, I am able to get image height and width for an image in indesign doc though Its not my requirement.
    Thnx,
    D.

    You might be able to examine the contents of the PlaceGun after calling kImportAndLoadPlaceGunCmdBoss without actually placing the image in a document. Not sure, but would be worth looking at.
    Otherwise you will probably have to write platform specific code, ideally with a generic platform-independant wrapper (see SDKSamples/paneltreeview/PlatformFileSystemIterator).
    For the Mac, look at CGImageGetWidth() etc., not sure what the best option is for windows.
    Perhaps Quicktime could provide you with a platform independant solution.

  • My InDesign document is getting bigger with every saving, but i didn't change the placed images

    The related ebook PDF is 70 MB heavy - while the InDesign Document only has 3 pages (A4). I can't downsample the PDF-Size.
    Is ther a BAK in the latest Update of InDesign or Acrobat? The InDesign size mutates from 4 MB to 177 MB to 230 MB.

    Is it possible not to post this screenshot public?
    I have also placed the file sizes in the Explorer-Window (bottom left), and the situation, while i generate the ebook PDF (so that you can see my settings).
    Many thanks!

  • How to center selected text in document window?

    I'm using Word.select( SelectionOptions.REPLACE_WITH) to iterate through a list of words in a document. It would be handy if any off-screen selections could be automatically scrolled into the document window, as with Find/Change. Is there any way to script this?
    Thanks in advance --
    Steve

    Curiously enough, there doesn't seem to be one specific function for that (which may explain the erratic way InDesign sometimes does this). I can't remember off-hand where I saw this trick, but the following works a treat:
    app.layoutWindows[0].zoomPercentage = app.layoutWindows[0].zoomPercentage;
    -- right after your select line.

  • Content of linked files in a inDesign-document refuses to update when edited.

    The problem:
    I have a question about linked files in an inDesign-document.
    We have a indesign-file (indd) wich contains text, linked map-illustrations and ads.
    One of the linked maps gets changed by an external map-producer via an VPN-tunnel. He works directly on one of the existing linked files (a map), and does not change the name or location of it after editing.
    After the change, we open the indd-file again, but no dialog-window appears telling us that a link needs to be updated. So we do it manually, but the changed content doesn't get updated in inDesign.
    If we target the linked file and choose to open it in illustrator for editing, all of the changes that was ment to be there, still is. It just doesn't show up in indesign. This also shows that the linking isn't the problem.
    The file is only placed at one spot in the document.
    Workaround:
    1. If WE (not the external map-producer) open the linked file and save it again (same name, same location), inDesign instantly promts us to update the link and the graphics updates without problem.
    2. If we place the file in a another location of the same inDesign-file, the correct content shows. (But still, the existing one does not update.)
    Question:
    Is there any way you can think of that could make this happen?
    If so, How can we solve it without having to use the workarounds?

    This will work if you all use the file syncing of the Creative Cloud desktop application and then you use the Collaborate option for the folder containing all the files. Then it will work on each of your desktops.
    Links to files will not work in the browser when viewing the InDesign document from https://creative.adobe.com/files.

  • Placing files in an InDesign document

    Hello Adobe Forum!
    I'm hoping to get enlightened on a problem I was faced in yesterday while working on a new document. I like to modify images I'm using in Photoshop and then add them to my InDesign documents. When I tried to do this yesterday, like I always do, I couldn't find the photoshoped image in the directory I saved it in. I went into Windows Explorer looking for the image, making sure I had saved it in the right place, and in fact I did. For whatever reason, when in InDesign, the photoshoped images are not appearing in the directory. Like I mentioned, I do this often so I do see old photoshoped images in there but not the ones I worked on yesterday. I re-started my PC when I left work yesterday but when I came in this morning, and tried to do this again, nothing had changed.
    Anyone have an idea as to what's happening here?
    Thank you!!!

    Not sure what you mean by that.

  • Drawing directly in the document window

    Can anybody provide sample code showing the basics of drawing directly in the document window? I'm thinking of something along the lines of the measure tool (pardon the pun).
    It looks like I'm supposed to use either the Annotator Suite or the Document View Suite to "invalidate" a rectangle in the document, followed by doing the actual drawing with the ADMDrawer Suite. But the documentation in this area is pretty sparse (for example GetDocumentViewInvalidRect and SetDocumentViewInvalidRect refer to a "fudged" invalid rect without explaining what that is) and I don't see anything in the Sample Code folder that explains this feature.
    Are the little text annotations ("path" "anchor") that pop up when using Smart Guides done using this method?
    Thanks,
    John

    (Sound of crickets chirping...)
    Boy, this forum is awfully dead in comparison to the InDesign SDK forum. Is no one writing Illustrator plug-ins anymore?
    But hey, I'll keep posting, if only for my own amusement, about my saga of writing a plug-in.
    I figured out some of the annotation stuff, but I'm still puzzled by some things.
    I started by simply trying to create a tool which would carry a 100x100 box around with it when moved on the screen -- no clicking or dragging yet -- much as the symbol sprayer, for example, has a nice circle (albeit of varying size) around it. I created the tool and added it as an annotator. When it receives a kSelectorAITrackToolCursor message, it simply captures the cursor location in a global and sets the PlatformCursor. When the tool receives a kCallerAIAnnotation message, I have this code:
    extern AIErr toolAnnotate( AIAnnotatorMessage *message ) {
        AIErr error = kNoErr;
        error = sView->ArtworkPointToViewPoint( message->view, &g->cursorPoint, &g->cursorPointScreen );
        g->annoBoundsScreen.top = g->cursorPointScreen.v - 50;
        g->annoBoundsScreen.bottom = g->cursorPointScreen.v + 50;
        g->annoBoundsScreen.left = g->cursorPointScreen.h - 50;
        g->annoBoundsScreen.right = g->cursorPointScreen.h + 50;
        ADMDrawerRef dr = sADMDrawer->Create(message->port, &g->annoBoundsScreen, kADMPaletteFont);
        ASRect myRect;
        myRect.top = 0;
        myRect.bottom = 100;
        myRect.left = 0;
        myRect.right = 100;
        sADMDrawer->SetDrawMode( dr, kADMXORMode );
        sADMDrawer->SetADMColor( dr, kADMBlackColor );
        sADMDrawer->DrawRect( dr, &myRect );
        sADMDrawer->Destroy( dr );
        sAnnotator->InvalAnnotationRect ( message->view, &g->annoBoundsScreen );
    This (should) convert the cursor location (in artwork coordinates) to screen coordinates, set the annotation boundaries based on this location, create the drawer reference, and draw the 100x100 rectangle within this reference. Finally, it invalidates this rectangle as per the Annotation suite documentation.
    I fired up the tool in Illy 10 and saw a single box created down at the 0, 0 point on the page. No box followed the cursor. Hmm. I added an sADMBasic->Beep() to the annotation code and realized what was happening -- my tool was getting an annotation message when first selected, but none when it was merely moved around the screen.
    After some futzing around I discovered that if I added a call to sView->SetDocumentViewInvalidDocumentRect in the TrackToolCursor code, I got an annotate message every time the mouse was moved! I captured the previous cursor position and invalidated the rectangle 50 points on all sides from it. and tried again. Success -- partially.
    At this point, the cursor could be moved around with the box following it. It suffers, however, from the following bugs:
    1) The SetDocumentViewInvalidDocumentRect is in artwork coordinates and so only works at 100% or greater. If I zoom out, my little box leaves trails all over the screen. In addition, if I zoom in, the cursor stutters noticeably -- I assume because Illustrator is forcing a redraw on large portions of the document. I think I can fix both these bugs by recalculating the SetDocumentViewInvalidDocumentRect into screen coordinates. However I note that the circle of the symbol sprayer can be made huge -- as large as the screen -- and it still moves smoothly. So maybe calling sView->SetDocumentViewInvalidDocumentRect is not the way to force annotations. But I haven't been able to discover another way.
    2) When the mouse moves into a palette, the square remains "hung up" at the last position where the cursor was in the document window. I think I can fix this by utilizing the Suspend and Resume notifiers and doing one last InvalAnnotationRect when I get the Suspend notification.
    3) For fun I tried clicking and dragging. Bad news. If I do this, thereafter the entire Illustrator window only redraws iself in the small rectangle that was set when I created the drawer port. By chance I found that if I use another tool that annotates such as the pencil *before* I use my tool, then everything is fine (although of course the box doesn't follow the cursor around anymore because my toolMouseDrag code is empty). How is using a previous tool "fixing" my code? I don't understand this one at all.
    Anyway, I suppose I could fork over a wad of cash and join the ADN and purchase a support case -- but hey, I'm just a hobbyist messing around at this point and facing some rather crappy documentation. Any tips will be much appreciated.

  • Drop an URL on a InDesign document from a Flex panel

    Hi Everyone,
    I have a Flex panel, in InDesign, from which I drag an URL. If I drop this URL on a text editor or a web browser, it works. But when I try to drop it on my InDesign document, it's a little bit harder.
    I have implemented a subclass of CDragDropTargetFlavorHelper. The drop works perfectly on Windows. But on mac, I have problems in the method CouldAcceptTypes :
    DragDrop::TargetResponse
    AutocatDNDCustomFlavorHelper::CouldAcceptTypes(const IDragDropTarget* target, DataObjectIterator* dataIter, const IDragDropSource* fromSource, const IDragDropController* controller) const
                   if (0 != dataIter && 0 != target)
                DataExchangeResponse response = dataIter->FlavorExistsWithPriorityInAllObjects(kURLDExternalFlavor);
                                  if (response.CanDo())
    The problem is that response.canDo() answers kTrue on Windows, but kFalse on Mac. I tried to explore the content of dataIter, but a call on dataIter->First() returns nil. I tried a controller->GetItemCount(), which returns 1. But if I try a controller->GetDragItem(1), I get a nil pointer. I have the impress there is no item.  Though, the drop works on another app than InDesign, as I said.
    Is it a problem of internalization ? Or something else ? It let me dry.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
    I solved this problem, but discovered another one. The flavor sent by the flex panel has been changed, so that it's a text flavor instead of an URL flavor. My method couldAcceptType works now :
    DragDrop::TargetResponse
    AutocatDNDCustomFlavorHelper::CouldAcceptTypes(const IDragDropTarget* target, DataObjectIterator* dataIter, const IDragDropSource* fromSource, const IDragDropController* controller) const
         if (0 != dataIter && 0 != target)
              // Check for URL Flavor in the drag
              DataExchangeResponse response = dataIter->FlavorExistsWithPriorityInAllObjects(kTEXTExternalFlavor);
                   if (response.CanDo())
                        return DragDrop::TargetResponse(response, DragDrop::kDropWillCopy);
         return DragDrop::kWontAcceptTargetResponse;
    The problem is now in the ProcessDragDropCommand method. Here is the code :
    ErrorCode AutocatDNDCustomFlavorHelper::ProcessDragDropCommand(IDragDropTarget*                               target, IDragDropController* controller, DragDrop::eCommandType                    action)
           // retrieve drop data
                   IPMDataObject* dragDataObject = controller->GetDragItem(1);
                   uint32 dataSize = dragDataObject->GetSizeOfFlavorData(kTEXTExternalFlavor) ;
    The problem is the IMPDataObject I get is nil. There is no item in the controller. However, there were items in the CouldAcceptTypes method, in the DataObjectIterator. So, where are my items ?
    I tried using a custom CDataExchangeHandlerFor, but could not really understand what its usage was for. It didn't work anyway.
    Has anyone an idea ?
    Regards,
    Rémi
