Indesign Document with Chinese Translation

Hello,
I am developing a datasheet for my company which will eventually be translated into Chinese for a convention in China. I am told the translation company will hand me a Word document which I will copy and paste back into InDesign for print production. What do I need to purchase or download in order to have the Chinese characters. Or..am I missing something all together and need to approach this a different way.
Thanks in advance for any help on this.
I am running the entire Creative Suite CS3 (actually installing today).
Tom

Provided the Word document uses regular fonts, you have no problem at all.
If you install the complete suite, be sure to include *all* fonts (can't recall -- if it's not mentioned during install, browse your DVD. There should be a folder somewhere.)
In a default Windows installation, you have a choice between SimSun and MS Mincho, two rather badly drawn Chinese fonts. A slightly better one, but sans, is included in Arial MS Unicode (which may or may not be on your system by default).
BUT! lo and behold, Adobe is aware of this, and supplies not one but several different Chinese fonts, in distinctive designs and extra styles (light / regular / bold -- there is no "italic" Chinese). You can import the text and it'll probably show up as pink boxes, or in its original font (MS Mincho etc.), but then you can select all and choose whatever you like. The 'extended' fonts -- not limited to Chinese -- have their own section in the Font List, near or at the bottom,
i not
alphabetically.
b Beware though
as there are variations in the supported character set. There seem to be several scripts (some of them w/o any Chinese), and not all fonts have all possible characters. If the text is so specialized not one font has all glyphs, you'll have to revert to the font used in Word, but then, even that is no problem for ID.

  • How to map the elements in Indesign document with the PDF elements

    I wanted to know any way of mapping elements in the InDesign document with the elements in the exported PDF document from the same InDesign document.
    E.g If I have an Image X in InDesign document, Can I point out the same element in exported PDF using some mapping?
    Thanks in advance
    -Sandeep

    What is meant by me is, if there is a Text element in InDesign document, I should able to point out the respective PDF object.
    I am looking for some way to mark a specific InDesign element and once we export the document to PDF, I want to point out to the same element in some way so that I can process it.
    Requirement is simple, one user will mark some elements in the InDesign document and export it to PDF and send it to the other user. Other user will parse the PDF and extract the same element back or process it and use it.

  • Issue with Chinese Translations not picked up in Extended Notifications

    All Gurus,
    We are on ECC 6.0 with the below settings.
    SAP_BASIS     700     0015     SAPKB70015     SAP Basis Component
    SAP_ABA     700     0015     SAPKA70015     Cross-Application Component
    We have been using Extended Notifications for quite some time and it's working fine in EN. We now are working on generating the Outlook mails in Chinese Language. In these, there are some std. SAP texts (as mentioned in "General Settings" in transaction SWNCONFIG) are not getting picked up even though the corresponding Chinese translation exists. Specifically, the EN text
    "The following new work items require processing XXXXXXXX" corresponds to Dialog text "SWN_PROLOG_MULTI" maintained for parameter "TEXT_PROLOG_MULTI" in General settings.
    When the Outlook mail is generated in Chinese, the corresponding Chinese text is not getting picked up and says "Text Not Found". Similar issue existed for some other Dialog texts maintained for parameters "TEXT_GOTO_WI" and "TEXT_CONTACT_ADMIN" for which SAP suggested new Notes 1661893 and 1661894. For these texts, once Chinese text is maintained in SE63, its getting picked up in the Outlook mail.
    Has anybody faced similar issue with Chinese translations in Extend.Notif ? If yes, please let me know how to fix this issue.
    Also, anybody knows the message / Dialog text # for the text "Execute Work item.SAP" in the Link that is attached to the Outlook mail ?. Please tell me how to maintain the Chinese text for this EN text.
    Timely reply is really appreciated.
    Thanks in advance & Regards,
    venu

    All,
    SAP provided the translations in the Notes 1675156 & 1675157 and it resolved both the issues mentioned. Also, the "Execute Work Item.SAP" link is picked up from the Text Elements of the class "CL_SWN_NOTIF_WORKFLOW".
    As the issue is resolved, i'm closing this thread.
    Thanks

  • Packaging an InDesign document with Placed Illustrator Files which contain PLACED GRAPHICS!

    I've got an InDesign document 215 pages long.  Each page contains a placed Illustrator document... and each Illustrator document contains a placed TIFF.
    When I package the InDesign Document the Illustrator files are gathered into the new location, but InDesign does not gather the TIFFs.  I need to get this material to the book designer, but relinking 215 pages is going to be a very risky and time consuming process--one that will have to be done OVER and OVER again as the project moves from one location to another.  Can anyone recommend a solution?  Why doesn't InDesign look for nested files?
    Does anybody understand what I'm talking about?
    --Jay

    The reason behind link (.psd in layers) means in the future it can be edited.
    If the person receiving to package needs to edit the layers of a PSD placed in an Illustrator file, then yes you would have to manually include the layered PSDs. But if it's just a matter of ensuring full res and color managed output downstream then saving as PDF does that and preserves the links to layered files locally. So if I save as PDF trash a link and reopen the PDF in Illustrator it will look for the link:
    If you save as .ai with the links embedded, the users downstream would be able to unembed and edit a flattened version of the placed art.

  • How to paginate an Indesign document with a PDF File?

    Hi everyone!
    I'm a french student and i have to do a document on the movie IN TIME (2011) by Andrew Niccol, and i wanted to paginate my document in the style of the counter the characters have on their arms (0000.00.0.00.00.00).
    I created it on Photoshop, as a simple Text, and i wanted to know if there was a way to paginate automatically all the document with this file (changing the numbers automatically)? Moreover, it would be perfect if it could be decreasing, like the counter, to have the last paged numbered 0000.00.0.00.00.00.... ?
    If someone has an idea....
    Thank you for helping me!
    I added snapshots to make my question more clear:
    PS: I'm sorry for my poor English...

    This is a job for Data merge, if using the photoshop files, but I'm not seeing anything in the screen shot that looks like it must be done in Photoshop because it is impossible to do in ID, which makes life simpler, so I'd just place a text file for the page numbers.
    Start in Excel and make a one-column table with your numbers in descending order. After you enter the first three, you should be able to get Excel to autofill the rest. Save as a text file.
    In InDesign add a frame to the master page where you want the number to appear, and rotate as desired. Don't forget to thread them together if you put a frame on both pages in the master spread. It looks like this frame is going to need to be on a new layer above other content. Create a paragraph style with the character color and the keep options (start in next frame) to use for the numbers. Also create an object style to add the glow on the text and apply it to your master frames. You can also include the paragraph style in your object style, but you must still select it inthe Paragraph Styles panel before placing the number list or the current default paragraph style will override the object style and things won't work as planned.

  • Unable to reset document with ***. Translation Adj. accounts using FBRA

    Hi,
    When i tried to reset a document which has with ***. Translation Adj. accounts using FBRA , i got a message saying
    "Exchange rate differences were posted"
    "Clearing document will be reversed".
    "Do you want to continue"
    Yes,No.
    When i click "NO", no actions is performed the document is in cleared status.When i clicked "Yes", the document has been reset and reversed.
    Bottom line is, system is not allowing to just reset these documents.We have to reverse them as well.
    Is this a new functionality came with ECC 6.0? I do not remember getting into this situation when we were using 4.7 version.
    If so, do we have any SAP note or documentation available on this.
    Thanks,
    Mano.

    Yes.
    What Dominic was saying correct.
    While clearing system posts Fx valuation difference into any one currency.
    So, at the time of reset, line item agian come into open status, so the clearing differences should be reversed.
    This is not a new functionality in ECC 6.0

  • How to Mark an InDesign Document with an "Indelible Watermark"

    For CS5 and ActionScript:
    I want to mark an InDesign document I've creating via scripting in such a way that an end user can not get rid of the marking (e.g., when distributing my extension as a trial version). Ideally, I'd want "Trial Version" splashed across each page "indelibly".
    How can this be done?
    TIA,
    mlavie

    Hi,
    Try using watermark document preference:
    app.activeDocument.watermarkPreferences;
    There are some properties like text, font, style, rotatio, opacity...
    Hope that helps.

  • Highlight File Format and PDF Documents with Chinese and English characters

    I'm a developer working on an application that makes use of the Highlight File Format / external highlight server capabilities of Adobe Reader.
    The highlighting worked correctly until we started to introduce pdf documents that were scanned to recognize Chinese in addition to English.
    The xml file seems to have the correct values in it. For example, if the 10 characters to highlight are at position 41 on the first page. The "xml" file has the <loc pg=0 pos=41 len=10>.
    If the document is scanned for English only, it works fine. That is, the highlight starts at character 41. If the same document is scanned for Chinese and English, the highlight starts at character 22.
    Has anyone had a similar experience? Do you know a solution?

    Hi,
    I don't know about BIP and the specifics of your context, but here are some general answers for the XLIFF format:
    <?xml version = '1.0' encoding = 'utf-8'?>
    Can we change encoding to 'ISO-8859-1' as soon as we convert the file format ?If you also save the file to ISO-8859-1 as well yes. But you can do this only for languages supported by Latin-1. It makes sense to keep the files in UTF-8.
    A-2) he section <header><skl><internal-file> contains a huge string
    which seeem to be binary ... What is this ? can we delete it ?That's likely to be the skeleton file. The data used to rebuild the original format after translation.
    Most likely it should stay there.
    A-3) Can we have one XLF file with muliple <file> sections (one per language to translate to ) ?
    This can be very useful for us to manage one only translation file per report template.Yes but no: yves you can have several <file> elements in an XLIFF document, but no: they must be for the same language pair. XLIFF is designed to work with bi-lingual files, not multi-lingual files.
    A-4) the most important section for translation is included in the <trans-unit> tag .
    Each one has a distinct id like ""49e41f8f" ... Can we replace this by a more meaningfull value ?Those id attributes are used by the filter to merge back the data after translation. You should preserve them.
    A-5) the language format is like "en-US" (language code + territory code).
    Is it case sensitive ? No it is not case-sensitive (en-us == en-US). The values of xml:lang are not case sensitive (unlike other XML attribute values).
    en-US is just the recommended notation.
    The XLIFF specification are here:
    http://docs.oasis-open.org/xliff/xliff-core/xliff-core.html
    Hope this helps,

  • Is there a way to populate an InDesign document with Pantone colors from a .csv document?

    I have a CSV document that inputs copy information into various labels we have set up in InDesign, but we also have Pantone colors that we put into this document.  Currently, it just imports the color number and we manually change the color ourselves, but is there a way to automatically populate the colors into the document?

    Hi,
    Here is some code you may want to play with
    Array.prototype.contains =  function ( object )
      var i = 0, n = this.length;
      for ( i = 0 ; i < n ; i++ )
      if ( this[i] === object )
      return true;
      return false;
    function createLabels() {
      var filterFunction = function(file)
      return /\.csv$/.test ( file.name );
      var f = File.openDialog("Please select CSV Files…", filterFunction);
      var sep = "\t";
      var n = 0;
      var headers = [];
      var rows = [], row = [];
      var doc, m, pw,pb,ph, np, tf, tfo;
      var p;
      if ( !f) { return; }
      f.open("r");
      headers = f.readln().split(sep);
      while ( !f.eof ){
      row = f.readln().split(sep);
      row.length>1 && rows [ rows.length ]  = {contents:row[0], colorName:row[1]};
      n = rows.length;
      if ( !n ) {
      alert("No data");
      return;
      doc = app.documents.add();
      doc.documentPreferences.facingPages = false;
      m = doc.pages[0].marginPreferences;
      pb = doc.pages[0].bounds;
      while (n--) {
      row = rows[n];
      np = doc.pages.add();
      doc.importAdobeSwatchbookSpotColor ( row.colorName );
      tfo = {
      geometricBounds:[pb[0]+m.top, pb[1]+m.right, pb[2]-m.bottom, pb[3]-m.left],
      contents:row.contents,
      fillColor:doc.colors.itemByName ( row.colorName ),
      tf = np.textFrames.add(tfo);
      doc.pages[0].remove();
    createLabels();
    Sorry for not using the highlighting code option but it wasn't displaying the whole stuff :\

  • Populating InDesign document with external data?

    Hi All – I hope I’m asking this question in the correct forum. I’m assuming that this is a scripting issue, but if it’s not, I apologize. Anyway -  am wondering if this is possible, and if so, if someone could point me in the general direction of further information:
    My company occasionally asks us to produce employee directories that include information (photo, contact info, education info, etc.) about various segments of the Firm population – for example, one directory might include all women of color, one might include everyone in the Los Angeles office, etc. I would like to find a way to “template” this in InDesign so that the relevant info can flow into the document from an external data source – for example, HR’s SQL database or maybe a spreadsheet generated from that database. I know that we are currently able to do something similar using Word, but the end product looks like crap.
    I’m not sure what this would even be called in InDesign, so any info will be greatly appreciated. I'm using version CS5. Thanks!

    i'd do this using the Data Merge feature. It's similar to the mail merge feature of word. There's a great video of how it works here: http://www.theindesigner.com/blog/episode-43-data-merge-video
    there are more complicated ways using XML or third party plug-ins, but i'd try this method first.

  • InDesign document with file extension .M ?

    I just received some inDesign collected art that I need to prepare for a printer. However, the document does not contain the usual indesign extension .indd -- instead it is  filename.M  I cannot open this. I know it was created in inDesign because the collected files are the usual "fonts' and "links" plus the Instructions.txt identifies it as having been created in inDesign. Can somebody please tell me what this .M extension is and how I can open the file?I'm on deadline! Thanks.

    For anyone else who is watching, the OP sent me the document in question, and I've run it through some utilities I have to determine what it is.
    I was able to view it as text, and from the first line it appears to be some sort of Apple print ticket: DOCUMENT DOCUMENT om.apple.print.ticket.creator</key>, but I don't know anything more than that.

  • Wish to create an interactive indesign document with moving boxes that grow when hovered over

    Hey guys,
    I am using indesign cs5 to create an interactive flashpage.  We want to have a series of boxes floating around the page and when one of them is hovered over it increases in size.
    We are able to create the floating boxes and by duplicating the boxes and grouping them, we a re able to make them grow.
    However, instead of growing towards the centre of the screen they seem to grow towards and then off the edge of the page.  Would anyone be able to advise me as to how i can force them to grow towards the centre or even create a boundary they cant go over
    I have attached dropbox links to the flash file below
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/6338755/Box.swf and
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/6338755/Box.html

    For what end product? HTML? SWF? PDF? Offset print? (I don't think so, but I might as well ask.)

  • Help trying to create a 2 page indesign doc with 1 landscape & 1 portrait page?

    I'm creating a double sided A5 flyer, how do I create a 2 page indesign document with one page portrait & the other landscape?
    Thank you in advance for anyone who can help with this ;-)

    You can use the Page tool to change one, but if it's going to print I think it would be better to make them both either ladscape or portrait, then use Rotate Spread View in the Pages panel to make one appear inthe other orientation on screen while work.

  • Can multiple articles be in one indesign document?

    I have an indesign document with multiple articles in it. I made the articles using the Articles panel. How can I add these articles to a folio? When I add an article to a folio using the folio builder panel, it adds the entire document, even though I've used the Articles panel to specify that, say, pages 2-5 are an article named "Family Matters."  Does an article have to be a separate indesign document in order to be added to a folio?
    On a more general level, I haven't seen anything in the DPS literature that explains what an article is, what can/can't be an article, etc. I think that would help me. Thanks to anyone who can answer this.

    Currently it is one article per INDD document. (Two INDD if you intend to do dual orientation)  The "articles" panel is directed more toward epub and html export.
    The concept of the"article" (in terms of the Digital Publishing Suite) was alot easier to understand when it was previous called a "stack" in the prerelease.  The concept is that each page in your article stacks on top of eachother to form one article.  You article InDesign file contains all the pages in that particle "stack" .
    Think of it in terms of a magazine.  Each "article" has its own section in the viewer and thus is own InDesign document (consisting of all the pages for that particular article).  All these different articles or InDesign documents come together to make one "folio" or edition of your magazine.
    My suggestion would be to get familar with the workflow to understand what is and isn't support from Indesign.  Some great videos are on the "getting started with the DPS" page

  • Non-editable element in an InDesign document.

    Hello, all.
    I need to add a non editable element to my InDesign document. This element will be my copyright notice. Although I will be sharing this InDesign document with others and will allow them to modify or customize it to their needs I wish to make my copyright notice non-editable so users will not have the option to remove the notice.
    Is there a way to make an element non-editable in an InDesign document so users can modify anything they want but that one element ?
    Thank you,
    Joe.

    In addition, as I explained on my previous e-mail, it should be difficult to implement such a feature considering Adobe currently offers something similar on its Acrobat application.
    My gut feeling here - not meaning to be offensive - is that you probably have no idea how hard or easy it is to lock something down. I am no developer, but I spend enough time working with devs to have a vague idea how hard it is to make something like what you're describing. And Bob is right about, defeating Acrobat security is trivial.
    It is not difficult but impossible to do what you ask for. All you can do is make it difficult to remove your copyright statement, and that difficulty varies according to the technical skills of the person(s) who wish to remove your copyright statement.. In your shoes, I'd just make it annoying to remove, and that would probably defeat 95% of the casual thieves who would file off the serial numbers and call your work their own. Heck, just locking it would defeat more than half of the casual uncredited reuse, if the frequency of posts here is to be believed. Put it behind a locked transparent frame on a locked layer and you've made it more difficult.
    I think that there may well be an untapped market for the feature you are describing, Joe - but if I were once again in your shoes, I'd be pitching it wherever Framemaker users hang out.
