InDesign ebook template (for Kindle)

Hi,
I'm a beginner using InDesign (CS5.5) and am trying to figure out whether I can easily use it to create a first eBook that I can then use the Kindle plugin to transfer into a Kindle eBook.
I can use InDesign basic features but am far from capable at more advanced use. I've wondered if it would be easier to use Acrobat Pro 10 to create an eBook instead? Or MS Word?
The content will be mostly text, with some Fireworks created illustrations, maybe a few links, in a chapter format. I'm guessing 6X9?
I would appreciate any feedback, especially whether InDesign is a good content-creation choice for a first eBook (versus Acrobat, Word or another app), given my limited skills with InDesign.
It would also be easier if I had a basic eBook template for InDesign, with a chapter format, that I can adapt to get started. I've searched online but cannot find any specifically eBook template with chapters.
Any suggestions, help, templates much appreciated.
Kind Regards,
saratogacoach

If you want to go to Kindle you’ll need to have knowledge of epub…and that includes HTML and CSS.
A few suggestions:
Liz Castro has two very good books on the subject; EPUB Straight to the Point (http://amzn.to/H2QEIk and From InDesign CS 5.5 to EPUB and Kindle (http://amzn.to/H2QUHo )
Anne Marie Concepcion has some videos on Lynda.com that are terrific. You can get a free one week trial here: http://bit.ly/fcGpiI

  • Where can you find free InDesign CS3 templates for newsletters, or free editable examples of good newsletters in the InDesign format?

I am looking for free newsletter templates or free editable examples of good newsletters made using InDesign CS3.  Anyone know of a great spot for finding these?

That would make sense if it opened a template folder but it opens the most recent Bridge folder I had open.
Edit: Just tried it again and the template folder came right up. Thanks.

    dialogue box.
I attempted to do this same export with a test file only about 20 pages and it exported quickly

  • Kindle Plugin for InDesign/Ebook

Hi. I want to publish my ebooks on Amazon, by jusing the latest version of InDesign - CS5.5 on my iMac. BUT I'm having trouble installing Amazons kindle-plugin, which should make you able to export your InDesign file directly into kindle-format. Whenever I try to install it, in the end, a pop-up says "Installation failed"! What have I done wrong?
Please comment if you have any suggestions!
    Kind Regards

I haven’t really read overwhelmingly great things about the kindle plugin.
Try exporting to EPUB and then converting to MOBI using Calibre.

  • How do I format a file to become an eBook for Kindle?

I have a custom, uniquely designed book layout that exports perfectly as a fixed layout ePub but now I need to format this same file, for Kindle. I'm told I need a mobi format. The structure / overall design is lost when I use Amazon's Kindle Generator... any other suggestions? Time & assistance is greatly appreciated!! ~Kate

We are experiencing the same problem with the ebook for Kindle. The ePub file works beautifully for iBooks, but when we create the Mobi file thru Kindle upload, we had font issues, kerning issues as well as some images became distorted. We followed the instructions carefully, including insuring the fonts were all true type, but the problems still existed.
We also downloaded the Kindle Plug in for Adobe InDesign, but it doesn't want to work with CC. And we think we have to use CC to create the ePub file. Can anyone help?

  • Creating a Template for PDFs in InDesign CS5.5

    Hello.
I'm trying to make a template for imposing PDF documents in InDesign CS5.5. The template needs to have trim marks and needs to fit 4 A5 pages on it. The page size needs to be 450mm x 320mm (SRA3) and should have guidelines (which I can't move by an exact amount) to help with positioning.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It might be easier to invest in something like Quite Imposing, an impostion plugin for Acrobat. It's far less expensive than a full-blown professional imposition program and if you need to impose a lot of PDFs, it will pay for itself quickly.

  • Indesign CC 2014 Fixed-Layout Epub exported great for iBooks.  Can I do the same for Kindle?

I have read a lot about being able to edit the Epub code in a Fixed-Layout Indesign CC exported Epub.  This Epub works great in IBooks. What I read said I could clean up the
code so it works for Kindle.  But I can't figure out what code needs to be cleaned out.  How can I export it correctly or clean it up?
    Hope someone here knows,
Thanks for the help in advance,
    Janis

    Monica,
    Thanks for your response.
I tried again as you suggested.
I exported a Fixed Layout ePub (exported size ~29mb) and tried to load it on an Mac, iPad and iPhone 5s. The results are inconsistent. On the Mac, I received a message that the file was corrupt. On the iPad, the file did eventually load (the quality of the output is another discussion - sneak preview, it's not as good as Circular Flo. Lots of weird stuff). On the iPhone 5s, iBooks is still spinning and has been for about 10 minutes.

  • HELP! I've created a template for event badges and have been instructed by the client to insert the (200 ) names and relevant companies into it...Is there a script that can do this in illustrator? Should I be using Indesign?

An events client I'm working for have asked me to create a template for badges. Rather than ask the printers to insert the names and companies of the individuals present at the event though, they want me to create all of the pdf files for (200+) people!
I have an excel sheet of the people that will be present. My question is: is there a way to automate this? to define editable areas in a template and run some sort of batch processing script?
    Thanks!

This would be a perfect job for Data Merge in InDesign. You can place your AI design into InDesign (minus the text fields), and then easily create a merge.

  • One Master Template for Mulitple InDesign Documents?

For example, say I have a change to a character style, or a page template.  I want this change to be reflected in multiple documents that all have the same look.
Right now I'm working on a template for a client that has 8 datasheets.  Each time they want a change to the look and feel of their template, I have to make it 8 times, to each InDesign file.  Is it possible to have some sort of master template?  I'm looking for the print equivalent of CSS files of the web design world.
I thought about having all 8 datasheets on one indesign file, but it seems it would be a pain being forced to choose which page I want to export every time for pdfs, and also a hassle with page numbering.
Is it possible to have one master template sync up for multiple InDesign documents?

I do the same. But one thing to add:
If these documents should have independent numbering than you should take care in the page panel's section & numbering options to restart each document with 1 (or whatever you want to start with.)

  • Need 2010 calendar template for Indesign CS

I am trying to do a calendar for a high school and need a 2010 template for Indesign CS.  I can find it for every other version of Indesign but not the plain Creative Suite version.
Can anyone help me with this?
    Thankx

Not likely. CS is very old and you should note that once CS5 comes, if the upgrade policy remains the same, you won't be eligible for upgrade pricing anymore.

  • Making my indesign ebook into apps for tablets

I've been looking into Indesign to make a very interactive ebook.
Last last question before I dive in head 1st.
What do I need to make an indesign ebook into apps for both Android tablets and IPads?
    Thanks for your time

Tomek, thank you very much for your answer. Sadly that's not what I wanted
to hear. But I needed to know the truth.
I real need to check into how interactive Indesign's apps can be.
    Thanks for your help.

    Peter,
does Pages v4 (09) work on a G4 chip? I think I've updated this old Mac iBook as far as it will go. In other words will I need to buy a newer laptop to get the Pages 09 to work and ouput to an eBook? Thanks. Richard

  • 2011 Calendar Template for Indesign (CS compatible)

Anyone know of a template for a 2011 calendar for Indesign? I would like to save some time inputing dates, holidays, etc.
Much obliged if anyone has one.

How come people need scripts to do calendars?
They're very simple to do. It's just 12 text boxes
Start with January - insert a table of 5 rows x 7 columns.
Set up a paragraph style that has auto numbering enabled.
Insert the days of the week on the top row
Insert a blank return into each cell with the day starting January, which is a Saturday
When you get to 31 that's January finished.
Copy and paste that text frame, then change the month to February, starts Tuesday and ends on 28 Monday.
Just add or remove returns so that the autonumbering adds the correct date.
    Then continue like that.
It couldn't be easier. You'd have it done in about 5 minutes.
It's just a matter of styling the tables and and figuring out the spacing etc.

  • I have written an ebook that has been created for kindle. How can I export the book into iBooks author?

I have written an ebook that has been created for kindle. How can I export the book into iBooks Author?
I have tried converting the book to different files like, mobi, epub, pdf. By using an app on my iphone.
I still cannot add it to iBooks Author.
    I'm stuck, Please help me!

Either use copy/paste and then format/style as desired, or take it to Pages or WORD and insert chapters - which may still require resettling.
If you're looking for a 1:1 port, with all styles and layout intact, you may be dissapointed, tho.

  • Has anyone a filofax template for Indesign?

I am looking for a filofax template for indesign does anyone have one that they would share?

while struggling around, I have unchecked “snap to pixel grid“.. this eliminated the funny numbers problem .. the coordinates and size stay the same now (who would expect this ) .. still it is very tedious to type everything, that´s why I´m still looking for a trick to make pixel-sharp edges without the need of typing the numbers - if there is any.
