InDesign Edit Original

Hi
Im a photographer and use InDesign creating wedding albums which involve continually editing graphic (tiff and jpeg). I use the function, Edit Original, by right click and selecting from the popup menu. As of last night the option doesnt appear, also if I use the Edit/edit original the option is greyed out.
Totally confused as to why I have lost this option, hoping for your help.
Thanks Gary

Hi
May have found the problem. System Restore point on the 13th May event, Software Distribution Service 3.0. I restore before this event and now all is working, edit original is back in the pop-up menu and working. Now i am wondering if this is an Adobe upgrade, if so, removing the Edit Original option is a backward step!
If anyone can throw some light on this I am interested in knowing how to stop this change.
Thanks
Gary

  • How can I get back the "edit original" option in InDesign CS2?

    I am using InDesign CS2 version 4.0 on a new windows 7 pc.
    On my previous pc (windows xp) I could open an ID document, right click on an image, select "edit original" and it would open up in Photoshop for editing. Very handy.
    Now that option is just not there on the drop down. The pencil in the links menu and the option under the edit menu are both greyed out.I can't find any way of accessing the option which is really important for my workflow.
    Any help gratefully received.
    Thanks
    Sarah

    Opening the document on a different computer is a meaningless test for something like this.
    The link could well be present there and not on your computer.
    As for XP mode, the less I say about it the better.

  • InDesign CS3 bug for "Edit Original"

    Hi,
    I have laid out an InDesign document with lots of photos (JPG), with each frame showing the photo at a certain 'crop level' (or % scale relative to the original photo). Let's say I have a frame in which the photo is scaled at 20%. If I try to edit this ('Edit Original') in Photoshop to enhance it, after making changes and saving & closing it, I return back to InDesign. I find this photo to be entirely different scale (the one chosen by InDesign is totally random, and certainly not the original one (so in the example above it will be not 20%, it could be 38%, 48% or whatever, but not the one I had before I started editing the photo).
    This is very annoying as I have to remember how the photo was set up in the frame, and fix it after finishing the editing step.
    Does any one know if this is a known bug and what is the work around to this problem?
    The whole reason for me to use InDesign was to be able to layout my pages perfectly and then edit only those photos that were selected. This bug is making my life miserable :-(
    Thx for any help/Regards,
    Sandeep

    Hi,
    I think the "mystery" is solved. The problem occurs ONLY on the portrait photos, and because of the peculiarity of various SW programs (even though they are all from Adobe). I can now recreate the scenario at will, even for a smaller test document with 1 image.
    This is what I have discovered so far. InDesign does have the dimensions from the original photo (that's why it will keep the correct settings regardless of how many times you make changes to the ID document or move/resize the rectangle 'linking' to the picture). The problem comes from the fact that photoshop changes some of the EXIF tags "logically".
    EXIF tags (I am showing only the relevant ones) for the original photo are the same as the one 'exported' from Photoshop Elements 6.0. They are as follows:
    Orientation : Rotate 90 CW
    XResolution : 72
    YResolution : 72
    ResolutionUnit : inches
    ExifImageWidth : 3888
    ExifImageHeight : 2592
    Software : Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0
    Note that my actual photo is in the 'portrait' mode, so width should be 2592 (smaller) and height should be 3888 (larger) - but the orientation of "Rotate 90 CW" is read and honored by InDesign, so I did not need to 'manually' rotate it when placing the file. Now I set the scale to 10% because my rectangle was small. When exporting the photo from my album, the Software tag was attached by PE6.0 as you can see above. In my original camera based file, this tag was missing, but otherwise everything is was same.
    AFTER I edited the photo in Photoshop to change its shadows/highlights, levels, etc. when I saved the photo, EXIF tags became:
    Orientation : Horizontal (normal)
    XResolution : 72
    YResolution : 72
    ResolutionUnit : inches
    ExifImageWidth : 2592
    ExifImageHeight : 3888
    Software : Adobe Photoshop CS3 Windows
    So, you can see that Photoshop changed the orientation to "normal" and also adjusted the Width and Height to support that orientation (I did not notice that quickly enough:-().
    What is strange is that, instead of maintaining my scale at 10%, after 'updating the modified link', InDesign changes the scale to 15% (if you do the math, the original horizontal dimension of 3888 is exactly 1.5 times the new dimension of 2592!) so it must keep the link information in some other way that it recomputes to be 15%. BTW, the X & Y values of the placed image were also multiplied by 1.5. That's how I was seeing the changed scales, as well as X, Y values after updates. The net orientation of the photo is not affected (at least for the photos from this camera), but it could as well.
    I am much happier that at least I understand the problem! This of course supports all of you who were recommending to 'prep' the files before you start. I'd also add that don't just prep them with any batch tool, but do it with the tool that you are going to use to edit. BECAUSE...
    This problem can occur any time I mix and match my editing software. I am going to check the behavior of LightRoom (since I have just got it, I am not as comfortable to work with it as Photoshop - and of course the styles of these 2 products are very different). I have never used the Camera Raw 4.5 (or 5 that comes with PS CS4), but will have to be careful about that too.

  • Photoshop opens a separate window every time i select edit original in InDesign

    I'm running CS5 and have a problem when editing linked files from InDesign.
    As an example:
    • I have an InDesign file that has a Photoshop file linked to it.
    • I need to edit the linked file so i use the 'Edit Original' function in the Links Panel - this open the link in Photoshop.
    • I edit and save but leave the file open
    • InDesign updates the change but i need to change something else
    • I use 'Edit Original' again but instead of taking me straight back to the PSD file i was just working on, Photoshop opens a new window that i am supposed to make changes to
    • If i was to make 5 changes, there would be 5 separate windows open in Photoshop
    • Closing the file at the end of each change isn't an option as some Photoshop files exceed 1.5GB
    Any suggestions...?

    I'd expect a poweruser to go to their Keyboard preferencepane to enable standard F keys.
    When you buy an Apple computer without loading it with software when would you use those keys? I can't think of one application that uses it, other than the obvious things like CTRL+F2 and the like that hardly anyone uses and I'd consider only there for strict keyboard jocks. After years of new computers having to disable the hide dock shortcut for feather it shouldn't be a crazy thing to expect someone to find their keyboard preferences if they demand that functionality. Heck, even Adobe just dropped that shortcut in CS4.
    Either that or ask for apple to make 140 key keyboards.

    > but i would much prefer the link to automatically update once changes have been made - as it should.
    I concur, and am a little frustrated with suggestions that you should "simply" flip between apps. That isn't a solution, it's what you're forced to do because things aren't working properly.
    I see you have been asking in the InDesign forum. I am surprised no one there suggested trashing your preferences. I would start there, I would also consider trashing Photoshop's preferences (I think it's much the same deal as ID, but you'd better check.)
    I wonder what happens when you use Edit With > Photoshop. Does that behave the same?
    And I can't help but wonder if it isn't something in your system. Does double-clicking a PSD in Finder work properly -- and twice in a row? Do you notice anything unusual at all? What about applets that commandeer shortcuts? Grasping at straws, but sometimes the way to fix a problem is to look where it can't be.

  • InDesign v 3.0 -- Linked files & Edit Original command problems

    I am running InDesign v 3.0 and Photoshop CS5 on a new Mac Pro.  When I use the Links pallet, after having selected a linked image with the black arrow, and choose "Edit Original", the image file will open in Apple Preview, rather than in Photoshop CS5.  How do I specify it to open in PSCS5?  Also, the "Update Link" menu is always greyed out so I cannot select it.  Thanks!

    In the Finder, select the image type you want to open in Photoshop (TIFF, JPEG, etc.). Choose File > Info.  In the Open With section, choose Photoshop CS5 from the list of applications. Click Change All.

  • Anomalies in CS5 when using edit original on Illustrator files from within InDesign

    Using the Edit Original function to open up a placed Illustrator file from an InDesign layout, we are seeing some strange things. If the image is placed on page at 100%, after editing via Edit Original it comes back in at a different size. Sometimes it is a silly size (99.999999999% or 100.000000002%), other times 2 or 3% smaller. Is anyone else seeing this - and, if so, is there a fix?

    We are also experiencing this with .psd .ai .eps .jpg files etc. etc. etc.
    Example:
    An image is placed in a box in InDesign, then resized and positioned. In a later stage the image needs editing, so the image is selected and we click on Edit Original. The image opens in either PS or ILL, we alter it (not sizewise, just color). Then we save it and the link in InDesign updates.
    BUT
    The position and the scale of the image most often CHANGES.
    CS5 is soo full of bugs, it is not even funny anymore. We are slowly moving our studio back to CS3.

  • Question about "Edit Edit Original", and a question about efficiency.

    I have a background image that I have imported (placed) inside my Indesign document. Problem is that I can't tell how the image will look against the other Indesign layers until I actually import "place" the image. I find myself having to keep going back into photoshop to adjust the hue/saturation or use the brush tool for adjustments. I then save, and from Indesign I update the link.
    Having to do this 6 or 7 times in a row until I am satisfied, seems like a huge waste of time. It just seems like it would be SO much easier and less time consuming if I could edit my image in the Indesign image. Is there a workaround?
    Here is an analogy. To me it's like an artist painting, but having to run into another room to dip his brush. He rushes back to his painting only to find that he needed just a little bit more yellow added to his white...so he has to run all the way back into the paint room to dip his brush again. I'm sure there is a reason for this work method in Indesign, but I'm just a little confused with it.
    Question #2: I have tried going to "Edit>Edit original" in InDesign. Problem is, that the "preview" app pops up instead of photoshop, because I like my psd's and jpgs to automatically open in preview for quick viewing purposes. I've read that the work around is to go into Bridge and change the way a program opens a certain type of image. I did this..I changed it so Photoshop and Indesign should open jpgs by default, yet still allow the osx operating system to still open them in "preview". I tried restarting Indesign to see if it was just something that required a restart to take effect. It still opens "Preview" when I go to Edit>Edit Original.

    CS4 adds an edit with feature...other than that sorry, Photoshop is
    where you'll need to do the editing.

  • Edit original cannot save image

    Hi, have a strange problem for few days. If I edit image (PSD) in InDesign with "Edit original" command in Photoshop sometimes after editing image I get message "Could not save "C:.../......psd" because the file is already in use or was left open" when I try to save it. If I close the file in InDesign I can save the image again in PhotoShop. Happens not all of the time. I'm not working with files on server. It's just me alone...
    Anybody experienced this kind of behavior?
    System Win XP SP3, InDesign 6.0.3 + Photoshop 11.0.1. (CS4)

    I like to understand before I act... What is psicon.dll for?

  • Tracking Edit Original in CS4

    Hi All,
    How can we know if an image has been edited with 'Edit Original' option in CS4.
    In previous Indesign versions (before CS4), the UIDRef of the link used to change if the image is saved after editing. In CS4 it doesn't change.
    In previous version I was trapping the ActionID for Edit Original and checking the UIDRefs to see if the image is saved after editing.
    Is there any method for this in CS4. Or some link attribute that can be checked to know if the image is saved or not after editing.
    Regards,
    Jasmine

    I am developing a plugin for adobe InDesign CS4.
    From my plugin, when I select a link and right click on it, I am getting "Edit Original" and "Edit with" options.
    But the "Edit with" option doesn't list the applications.
    I am able to edit the link using "Edit Original".
    The code I mentioned is not able to get the list of applications in the appList array.
    currently I am doing the below in LinkResource Handler::CanEditResource().
    AppInfoList appList;
    UIDRef LinkSelectedInLayout = Utils<ILinksUIUtils>()->GetSingleLinkUIDRefSelectedInLayout();
    if(LinkSelectedInLayout.GetUID() != kInvalidUID)
    InterfacePtr<ILink> SelectedLink(LinkSelectedInLayout,UseDefaultIID());
    if(SelectedLink)
    //UIDRef linkResourceRef(::GetDataBase(SelectedLink),SelectedLink->GetResource ());
    Utils<ILinksUIUtils>()->GetEditOriginalEditorList(appList,SelectedLink );
    //Utils<ILinkUtils>()->GetEditorList(linkResourceRef,appList,kFalse);
    Any Guide will be a great help
    Thanks

  • "Edit original" problem

    Hello. I have used Photoshop 7 and Indesign CS4 for some years. I just did a reformat and reinstalled them. My problem is, when I want to "edit original" image, whereas it USED to open the image in Photoshop, now it opens in another image program. How can I make Indesign open it in Photoshop, like it used to?

    Let's see if I can remember what the Dilaogs look like in XP
    You must be logged in with an account that has Administrator priviliges. Open Windows Explorer and show the menu bar if it isn't already, then click the Tools menu and choose Folder Options. In this dialog, click on the File Types tab, then scroll down to the extension for the image type you want to change and select it. You should be see a box that has and "Opens with" listing and a "Change" button which you should be able to click to open a dialog to allow you to pick another program. You may have to browse tothe Photoshop directory and pick the Photoshop.exe from this dialog if it doesn't appear in a list.

  • Edit Original... but not in Paint!

    I'm running InDesign CS2 on Win XP.
    When I click on the Links Pallet and chose "Edit Original" and the image is an RGB .jpg, it opens by default in Microsoft Paint.  How can I set it up so that these images open up in Photoshop?
    Every time Paint opens up, it's like I'm running into an old girlfriend at the mall.  "Oh, hey!  Um.... how are you?  Wow, I'd love to stay and chat but I gotta get going... it was nice to see you again, say hi to your mom!"
    Then when Photoshop opens up shes like "Who was that?"
    "Nobody, baby, it's just some program"

    May I also offer my congratulations on your character study of Paint!    Reminds of one I saw recently of comic sans...
    Personally I like to have the default for opening jpegs as a lightweight photo viewer (Picasa 3 is great), when I want to edit one I just use the reveal in explorer command and do it from there.  Photoshop opens as default for psds and tifs and if I do click edit original on a jpeg I am spared the embarassing encounter with Paint.

  • "Edit original" for JPEG opens Preview, not Photoshop?

    When I right-click on a JPEG in InDesign CS 5 and then select "edit original", it opens the photo in Preview. Is there a way to set the default application associated with JPEGs to Photoshop?
    Thanks

    Oh, I see. I was hoping there might be a separate function for ID because I generally like to open JPEGs quickly in Preview. I guess I'll just stick with the contextual menu and scroll to Photoshop. Not a big deal.
    Thanks!

  • Unable to get the Edit Original Action ID

    Hi all,
    I am trying to intercept the Edit original and Edit with functionalities.After going through forum and samples,came to know that it is possible only by using ActionFilter.
    After implementing the ActionFilter ,I am able to catch  Edit With>Other ActionID,but still not able to get Edit original and Edit with>application ActioID.
    Can Somebody please tell me what could actually be done to solve the issue ???
    Thanks in advance....
    Regards.

    I bet you are developing a plug-in -- better ask in the InDesign SDK forum ...

  • When I click "Edit Original" in the links panel it opens MICROSOFT PAINT!

    When I click "Edit Original" with a jpeg selected in the links panel it opens Microsoft Paint! In Windows (7) the file association is Windows Picture Viewer (NOT Paint!) and in Bridge it is associated with Photoshop CC. In InDesign we have the option of choosing which program to edit linked files with. In Illustrator we are stuck with the astounding Paint! Why?? 17 versions and this still bugs me!

    Thanks Mylenium.
    I know how to change the default program associated with an extension (I would like to keep picture viewer as the default open option for JPG) but I don't know how I change the EDIT association (currently Paint for JPG) in Win 7.
    And it would be much more useful if AI could just give us the option of setting defaults (as Bridge does) OR AI could just use Bridge's defaults OR give us an "Open with" option as in Indesign. So many possible solutions, I've feature-requested this on occasions since CS1, it works in other Adobe apps, so I can only think Adobe is wilfully ignoring this issue for Irritator.
