Indesign EPS files cannot be opened by other users

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help me out...
I'm trying to export something to a client as an .eps from InDesign CS5.5. I can export it fine, I can open it on my laptop
without any problems using my other copy of InDesign...
But when the other person tries to open the file ( I thnk they are using Corel PaintShopPro X4) it simply produces an
error message saying that the file is either corrupt or uses unsupported features.
The file I am trying to export is vector (ungrouped and outlined to remove any font issues) and also contains JPGs
within the design. ( I have also tried sending him just a page with a vector outline box and nothing else on it and that
won't open either.)
Anyone have any suggestions please???
Many Thanks,
Jerry

First, a very genuinely felt thank-you to all those who have contributed to this, I really appreciate your input, help and time in trying to help me understand this issue more completely.
# Peter - Why not do it in Illy?  No specific reason, probably that I am just more familiar with Indesign, and until working for this particular client had never had a problem
with anyone else opening or using an .eps file for my design work. The reason they have a problem - proprietery software BASED on Corel, but not Corel that they themselves
seem not to fully understand leaving me with the problem of trying to work out why for them!
# Mike - I think you are correct, and it sounds as if you have sent work off to engravers before...Is that the case???
But just to re-emphasise - they are NOT using CorelDraw or PSP X4 - but I do know that their own software is based on it.
# Bob - of course you are right, but the company won't provide me with a copy of their software - and in my opinion they don't fully understand it themselves.
I think they commisioned someone to make them software to control their lazers - they are in the lazer manufacturing business, not software developers...and despite
many and long conversations with their "technical expert" they are unable to supply any definitive answers - we've even driven 1/2 way across the country and spent
a day there with them and still cannot work out the inconsistencies.
#Dov - thanks for such a detailed and definitve response. I wasn't criticising Adobe or expecting a "magic wand" solution, hope it didn't come across like that!
So, finally a conundrum: Can someone please tell me why:-
If I create a new document in Indesign Cs5.5 and simply add a vector square in black to it and save it as an EPS it won't open in Corel PaintShopPro X4.
If I copy and paste the self-same document into illustrator and export as an eps using the same postscript level, the same encryption (ASCII), the same preview...
It DOES open in Corel PaintShopPro x4.
It isn't fonts, or transparencies, or layers, or OPI conversions...so what the heck is it???

Industry standard files such as JPEG are compatible with many brands/versions of programs
Proprietary files such as those created by InDesign are often not backwards compatible, due to new features in newer program versions
This is not unique to Adobe... MS Word DOCX files are not backwards compatible with earlier versions of MS Word

  • Server allows overwriting files that are open by other users.

We're having a problem with Snow Leopard Server not warning a user when they attempt to overwrite a file that is open by another user.
Running Snow Leopard Server 10.6.8 on an Xserve with an Xserve RAID. Have about 25-30 Mac clients, running 10.6.8 or 10.7.3. Users running Adobe CS5.5
    Here's the scenario:
User edits a file in InDesign, then saves a PDF of that file to the server. The user's supervisor reviews the file, and perhaps adds comments to it, but not necessarily.
The user edits the ID file again, and saves a new PDF over the old one. When we were running Server 10.4.x, the user would have been warned that the PDF file was open by another user, and would have been prevented from saving. Under SL Server, no warning takes place, and the file is overwritten.
At this point, a couple of things can happen.
1: The new file is written, and the changes can be seen by the user. The supervisor's computer does not see the new version of the file. Quicklook and opening the file into Acrobat 10 will still show the old file. Disconnecting and reconnecting fixes this.
2: The new file is written, but it is corrupted, and not openable by either party. If neither one opens the file right away, this could go unnoticed.
I've tested this scenario between two Lion machines, and the "file-open" warning occurs like it should.
Is there a setting in SL Server that I need to look at, or is this a bug?
Our short-term fix is to have the user always save to a new filename. This can work, but it's cumbersome.

  • I can no longer access a password protected Numbers file with the correct password. Error message only says the file "cannot be opened."

    I'm using Numbers version 3.2.2.
Suddenly I cannot access my password protected Numbers file with the correct password. I have the correct password written down so I know I haven't made a mistake.
The response box that pops up says that the file cannot be opened. There are no other options for me to choose from.

Also, I tried to open it through an older version of Numbers but it sent this error message.

  • Exchange server damages Word files - cannot be opened on Word for iPad anymore

    Dear all,
I posted the following problem in the Office for iPad forum and was asked to address this topic here as well. Probably you can help?
In my office we are using Word 2007 to create ordinary .docx files. When I email such a file to my iPad I cannot open it neither in the Mail.app preview nor in Word for iPad.
Mail.app tells me its an "Office Open XML word processing document" and Word just tells me the file is damaged. However the files opens just fine in various versions of Word for PC and Mac.
Does anyone know what is happening here? I bought Office for iPad especially to being able to open the word files I create in my office... :-(
    Additional info:
    I ran the following test:
I took a .docx file I created on my office PC which was stored on our server and saved it locally to my PC harddrive. I then saved a copy as .doc as well. Then I emailed both files to my office Outlook account AND my iCloud account (with one email).
BOTH files did NOT open in Word for iPad from my Outlook account (Exchange Server) but BOTH files just opened fine from my iCloud account.
I then forwarded the email from my Outlook account to my iCloud account and now BOTH files did NOT open on the iPad anymore.
So it seems that my Outlook account (Exchange server) corrupts the files so they cannot be opened on the iPad anymore, while they can still be opened on a PC or Mac.
Do you have any ideas to solve that issue?
It cannot be that Office for iPad doesnt work in combination with an Exchange Server Outlook Account, can it?
    best regards
    Wolfgang

    Hi,
I suggest doing following test and returning the results to me.
    1. Please using OWA to open the .docx file on both PC and iPad via your Exchange account.
If the file can be opened in OWA. I suggest asking ActiveSync Forum for help so that we can get more professional suggestions.
    For your convenience:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/exchange/en-US/home?forum=exchangesvrmobility
    2. Please verify whether this issue occur on only one user (your Exchange account). If only you have this issue, it should be an issue on your Exchange account or your iPad.
    3. Please try to use other's iPad for test. If the file can be opened on other's iPad, it seems an issue on your iPad.
    Thanks

  • Hi, I cant open a document I have been working on. It has previously been saved without a problem now all I get is a box stating that the file cannot be opened. Any suggestions please?

Hi, I reecntly purchased a Mac and the Pages App. But now I find that I cant open a document I have been working on. It has previously been saved without a problem now all I get is a box stating that the file cannot be opened. It is visible in both the Pages Windows and under Recent Items but just will not open. Any suggestions please?

    Hi Colourdoodles,
Maybe the document is corrupted. Can you open other Pages documents? Preview may open it. Right click (or control click) on the document in Finder and Open With > Preview.
If that works, Edit > Select All, Edit > Copy. Then paste into a blank Pages document. Formatting may be messed up, but you will have editable text. Then Save (with a different name), close and see if you can open the new document.

  • Error message in .docx : 'Open XML file cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents. Details Unspecific error Location: 2'

I have put a lot of work into a docx document on my Mac, but now can't open it as it gives the error message: 'the Open XML file cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents. Details, Unspecific
    error, Location: 2'
When opening the original file the message said: 'this file contains word 2007 for Windows equations' etc. but I managed to track changes fine, and saved, closed and re-opened it numerous times without problem. Some graphs seemed moved, and various formulas
were illegible, but no other weirdness was observed.
I have microsoft 2008 installed on my Mac OS X version 10.6.8.
I've tried to fix it using various solutions suggested here, but am afraid am too IT illiterate to have had any luck, please help I'm new to all this!
    I've uploaded it to https://www.dropbox.com/s/hkw9k6lyihzoxpc/SittwayPauktawSQUEACREPORT_KD%2BCH.docx

    Hi,
This issue is related strictly to oMath tags and occurs when a graphical object or text box is anchored to the same paragraph that contains the equation.
Please use the "Fix it" tool in the following KB article to resolve the problem. See:

    Hope this helps.

  • Project Standard 2013 'The File Cannot be Opened'

I am using Project Standard 2013 and have been doing so since 2013. Last week it suddenly started coming up with the following error message when I try to save a project and update the associated shared resource pool:
    The file cannot be opened.
Check that the file name and path are correct
Check that the file format is recognized by Project
Project files saved in a version earlier than Microsoft Project 2000 can't be opened.'
I have only ever used this version, no earlier versions. I have tried to repair the application through the update/re-install process.
The projects save but do not appear in the resource pool unless both files are open. Some projects are still linked to the resource pool and show in it even if they are not open. This is now happening with all files when I try to save them. Sometimes it
    says:
'The resource pool is read only, do you want to save a copy'
Even if I click 'no' a copy appears which I can't close and I have to force quit the application.
    Help.

I've also tried opening the resource pool read-write. That worked for about 5 minutes when saving projects. Now it won't let me save my project without saving the resource pool first. When I try to save the resource pool, I get the same error message:
    The file cannot be opened.
Check that the file name and path are correct
Check that the file format is recognized by Project
Project files saved in a version earlier than Microsoft Project
    2000 can't be opened.'

  • Publisher - pdf - "This file cannot be opened because it has no pages"

    Hi,
I have a Publisher report which works fine as a single page when generated to pdf.
I change the data model to give me multiple pages and insert the entire report content into a repeating frame which correlates with the header data that is definitely present for all records. ceteris parabus.
I preview this in interactive mode - everything works okay.
I preview this in pdf and I get the error; - "This file cannot be opened because it has no pages"
This is on well formed XML with a very modest data set.
Anyone have a fix or a pointer for this please??
    thanks,
    Robert.

  • File cannot be opened because there are no pages - Reader 9 & X

I have an old hydro bill in PDF format from 2000.  I can open this PDF in Adobe Reader 8 and earlier with no issues whatsoever (i.e. double-clicking the PDF in Windows Explorer).  The problem started with Adobe 9 & continues with Adobe X.  When I double-click the file, Adobe opens but tells me the "File cannot be opened because there are no pages."  More recent hydro bill PDFs can be opened with no issue.
Googled & searched the forums but haven't found any earlier reference to this particular error though there is a vague recollection that someone complained somewhere about this or something similar with Adobe 9 some months ago but there was no solution to be found then.
Using Windows Vista Ultimate here & have uninstalled Reader X & returned to Reader 8 pending a solution.
Does anybody know how to fix this?
    Thanks.

Thanks for the idea.  Disappointing if true.
Thing is... it's an old hydro bill... I'm just keeping it for posterity's sake (a bill from when I was paying for nuclear power!?!)
    Most troubling and disconcerting.
So, who should be sued?  Adobe?  My hydro company?  ;-)   Just kidding.
    Anyway... some time gone by...
    - re-installed Adobe X
    - as per ghostscript.com, downloaded Ghostscript v9.01 & Gsview v4.9 (McAfee okayed them)
    - installed Ghostscript & Gsview
    - started Gsview
    - dragged & dropped one of the offending hydro bill PDFs from Windows Explorer into Gsview
    - from File menu picked Convert
    - for Device pdfwrite, upped Resolution from the default 600 to 720
    - via the Properties button in the Convert dialogue, adjusted CompatibiliyLevel to 1.2, clicked OK in Properties dialogue
    - clicked OK again back in the Convert dialogue
    - in the Output Filename dialogue, made the new file a "b" copy of the original filename
    - clicked Save
The new file is a tenth the size of the old one & opens without incident in Adobe X.  Ghostscript works well... thanks.
But... is this really the optimal solution for businesses & governments?  It's not as if the old files were on vellum and here we are like old monks, transcribing for the king.  Good grief where are we going?

  • Please Help! Received an error message in Adobe Muse stating file cannot be opened.

I am worried my Adobe Muse file is long gone. Adobe Muse crashed on me in the middle of designing a website. I tried to re-open the file and it states This Adobe Muse site file cannot be opened. no records in main.active table. I am not sure what to do. Pleae help!!

Next to the file you were attempting to Save As to when the crash occurred, you should find a file with the same name but ending in "renamed" plus some numbers. Delete the unopenable flie and change the name of the "renamed" file to be the original file name with a .muse file extension. You should find it's the original file you had opened.
Are you working with the .muse file stored on a file server? Or is it on a local drive?

  • File cannot be opened because there are problem with the files

    Hi
My program reads the data from file uploaded into SharePoint 2010 and massage with the list information. It finally creates a new document and prompt the end user to save it. When user opens the saved document it consecutively prompts with the below two message
