InDesign equivalent to Freehands "expand stroke" tool?

Hi everyone, I'm busy with the painful uphill journey of converting from freehand to indesign for my page layouts. Does anyone know if indesign has an equivalent to the freehand "expand stroke" tool? Thank you in advance to anyone who replies.

You have to use Illustrator to do that (outline or expand).
You can copy paste the object between InDesign and Illustrator, getting
the obect back editable in InDesign, if it is not too complicated.

  • Expand Stroke makes closed object

Expanding a stroke used to expand just the line. Now, it
    expands the
line and makes an object with by closing the path. How can I
    get the old
    behavior back with FHMX?
    TIA

Thanks for the reply. I don't know what happened. I have used
    FH enough
to know how the expand stroke tool works. Yesterday, I had a
    simple
curved path. When I tried to expand the stroke, FH made
    "bowl", a
compound closed path object by connecting the ends of the
    stroke. I drew
some more lines with the same results. I worked around this
    to finish
the job. Now, this morning the expand stroke is working
    correctly. It is
just making the path a simple closed object. Must have been
    sunspots or
    bad karma.

  • What is the Illustrator CS3 equivalent to the CorelDraw Contour Tool

I'm very new to AI. I've done a couple of chapters in the AI classroom in a book. Being so new, I don't have a clue what search arguments to use.
I've seen the contour tool in action in a tutorial to do gradients between two paths or around letters. It seems to have the capability to do the gradient from the outside in, inside out or from the center. In the Corel version you can specify the start and end colors as well as the number of steps. An accelerator control will skew the gradient to favor one end or the other.
Is there an equivalent to the CorelDraw contour tool in AI?

Two ways that I can think of at the moment are blends and multiple strokes. Or possibly a combination of the two.

  • What is Illustrator's equivalent to Freehands "Paste Inside" feature?

I'm really new to Illustrator, having come over from Freehand MX (which no longer works on my OSX software), so I'm a little lost. Can anyone tell me if Illustrator has a feature that is the equivalent of Freehand's "Paste Inside" feature? I'm desperate! Thanks!

If you have CS5, it has a 'draw inside' feature, this is just automaticially making a mask from the object.  (the paint tool and text works but with shapes you need to copy and paste them inside, which is what you're looking for.)
    Hope you got your answer.

  • Blurred lines when using the stroke tool

Im trying to draw frames with feathered corners using strokes, its supposed to be a solid black line 2px thick it works sometimes but not others. What I end up with is a blurred edge, almost like it's using a spray which is not at all what I want, have tried changing various settings but its still the same.
Anyone any ideas please? It's driving me mad..
    Thanks!

Yes, I was using the marquee tool to create the rectangular shapes then using the stroke tool. I took feathered setting off and that resolved the problem.
    But...
How do I create rectangular shapres with rounded edges, then use the stroke tool?
I've changed the colour settings so it's not being 'filled' but when I try to use stroke it's now greyed out.
All I am trying to achieve is a rectangular shape with rounded edges with a black outline.
I thought it would be simple ;)

  • Lost my srink expand close tool bar photoshop cc

lost my srink expand close tool bar any one have any way i can get it back photoshop cc

    Hello,
to my knowledge you have to delete your preference file. Resetting the preferences will restore Photoshop settings to factory defaults!
For a MAC I found this solution: Command+Option+Shift. Then, click "Yes" to the message, "Delete the Adobe Photoshop Settings file.
In Window's Explorer you have to set options to "View Hidden Files and Folders" to display the "Preference file".

  • Indesign CS3, a FreeHand flavour?

With this new version of Indesign, we, FreeHand lovers, won't
be upset by the new indesign interface.
    Take
    a look

Now I am the biggest Freehand fan and used it for all of my
vector creations and full layout for the last 10 years.
I switched to InDesign for all of my layout work several
months ago and honestly I wouldn't go back, even if we got a brand
new freehand I would only use it for the vector part.
you guys have to know one thing, InDesign is NOT another
    Quark Express!
its truly outstanding, to me it feels like freehand with a
whole bunch of extra features thrown in, and what features!
imagine having access to all of your photoshop layers
    including transparency, right within layout,
live shadows, feathering, glows, etc for any objects
    including vectors,
high resolution native pdf output, fully postscript complient
including all of the transparency effects.
the most incredible text control, too many features to list
here, but the best text features on the planet bar none.
best of all, the realtime onscreen postscript rendering
engine is very fast, I can work on a 50 page document with vectors
and images in full resolution all day long without slowing down at
all, try doing that in freehand!
using InDesign has not slowed me down one bit, it took a
couple of days to get used to where everything is, but I pretty
    much hit the ground running,
I still use freehand for all of the vector parts and I guess
I always will, if I have to run Freehand in emulator mode for the
next 10 years then thats ok for with me.
seriously folks, take a look at InDesign, its a true
designers tool, and I for one am having a lot of fun discovering
the capabilties of this amazing app.
check out the other podcasts for "The InDesigner" and you'll
    see what I mean.

  • Can I flatten/expand stroke to outlines on Export to PDF or EPS?

I have 300 page document that I need to use to send to a sign makers to have 300 different vinyl cut signs made. I've used a heavy stroked line in my document but when exported as EPS or PDF the stroke has not been outlined, meaning the path for the vinyl cutter is in the centre of the stroke, rather than the edge of the stroke.
Does anyone know of a way to outline the stroke in the export options? Or a way of converting the files outside of inDesign?
    Thanks in advance

@Linus – since the sign maker rely on CUTTERS that follow paths, instead of a pixel based workflow, the only way is to convert thick strokes to areas. Do it by a proper transparency flattener preset. Check "Convert Strokes to Outlines". Apply your preset when exporting to PDF v1.3  (in InDesign CS5 and above print to PostScript and distill to PDF).
Of course you have to introduce transparency to all pages. Do so in setting up a rectangle above all page objects (best on master pages), fill it with "[Paper]", give it a opacity of 0 % in the effects palette and you are ready for output.
Check the results in Acrobat Pro with the touchup object tool and Adobe Illustrator (select the touchup object tool in Acrobat Pro, select all, right click and do "Edit Objects…", Illustrator will open the objects. All strokes should have a weight of 0).
Or set up a special preflight profile in Acrobat Pro that will throw an error if a path object has a stroke weight other than 0.

How do I find it and place it on the panel?

It's in the same grouping as the Rotate, Shear or Scale tool. Click and hold on the tool (notice the little arrow in lower right corner?) to expose the whole group, or press E with no text cursor active.

  • InDesign CS6... Selection tool won't work. HELP!

Just installed InDesign CS6 and the Selection tool will not re-activate after another tool is checked.  Has anyone experienced this and found the problem?

Yes, I know that you need to click on the Selection tool to activate it.  That's the problem. Nothing happens when I click on it or hit ESC.  When the program launches, the Selection tool is highlighted, but as soon as I select another tool, like "Type tool" or "Rectangle tool", when I click on Selection or Direct Selection tool, it will not activate.  This means I cannot do anything.  The Application Bar actions do not work because I cannot select them.  I uninstalled the product and reinstalled it and the issue is the same.    Could there be some Preference that is causing a problem?

  • SQL server equivalent to Access Compact Repair Tool?

Simply put, is there a SQL server equivalent to the MS Access Compact Repair Tool?
    Cheers in advance

    Hi MarkWest009,
In addition to other posts, for other SQL Server editions, when the database file is corrupt,
the best way to recover the database is to restore it from latest backup. So please ensure you have a backup strategy, I recommend performing both database and log backup in most situations.
However, if you don’t have SQL Server database backups, you can firstly check the database consistency by executing the DBCC CHECKDB utility without any clause. The command is executed and the reason for corruption is provided. Then, run the utility using the
mentioned clause. If you are not able to repair SQL Server database with DBCC CHECKDB, then you might use a third-party repair tool for SQL Server database file repair.

  • Equivalent to FCP range selection tool

Is there an equivalent to this in Premiere CC?  The tool is rarely used, but when you need it, it sure is helpful.  If you're unfamiliar, here's the idea:
I have two contiguous clips in the timeline.  I want to select the tail of the first one and the head of the second one to copy and paste somewhere else.  With this tool, I can click and drag to select any segment of any number of clips, regardless of their in/out points.

From the CC help menu, under "June 2013 new features", as well as from the CC PP manual:
Copy command enhanced to operate on a range in a sequence
The existing Copy command (Edit > Copy, Ctrl+C (Windows), Command+C (Mac OS)) is enhanced when used in the Timeline panel. If there are no clips or keyframes selected, and an In Point or Out Point is set, then the range of time between the In point and Out point is copied to the clipboard.

  • InDesign equivalent of LiveCycle's "Image Field" in PDF form creation?

LiveCycle has a PDF form field called "Image Field". We add this field to the PDF files we create so that our end users can select and import a JPEG image into their PDF document using Adobe Reader.
Now we would like to use InDesign to produce the same PDF form files as an alternative to using LiveCycle. Does InDesign have a PDF form field like LiveCycle's "Image Field"? We haven't found it yet.
In other words, does someone know in InDesign how to create a field in PDF forms which has the same functionality as LiveCycle's "Image Field"? LiveCycle's field works in enabled Adobe Reader files, and permits JPEG format, among others.
    Thank you,
    Kevin
P.S. We discovered a way to create PDF forms in Adobe Acrobat Pro XI with similar functionality by using JavaScript, but the Acrobat Pro created documents only permit Adobe Reader to import PDF files, not JPEG or other image formats. So Adobe Acrobat Pro XI was not a viable alternative to LiveCycle for creating our PDF files. We'd like to know if we need to rule out InDesign, too.

It's worth separating out the different responsibilities and products.
Whether a functionality exists in Reader depends on the Acrobat team. Reader, being free, is limited by design, the aim of the design being to sell copies of Acrobat. Obviously, Reader can't make PDFs or do preflighting. Less obviously, there are a bunch of JavaScript functions that don't work. Sometimes, with Reader enabling, more functions become available. (There are different kinds of Reader enabling, some of which need very expensive extra products).
Whether a form capability exists at all is largely down to the PDF specification (now an ISO standard) or the XFA specification. Adobe can choose to go beyond the specification but largely choose not to.
So, the InDesign team can make form fields, not because the Acrobat team approves, but because the way this is done is written down in the PDF Specification. InDesign _could_ choose to make XFA forms, but thank goodness that will never happen.
So, if you want InDesign forms to do something you first have to ask: can Acrobat forms to this. NOT XFA (LIveCycle forms) which are done by a different team to different rules. So far as I know Acrobat forms cannot do the sort of thing you want; that is, placing arbitrary graphics, but in certain circumstances they can place PDF files.
    Why make the distinction?
    - If Acrobat can make forms that do this, then so can InDesign: it's worth asking the InDesign people to do it.
    - If Adobe limit Adobe Reader, there is no use asking the InDesign team to solve this.
    - If Acrobat can't make forms that do this, then nor can InDesign.
