Indesign File comparison tool

Hello, is there any tool available for indesign files that makes a precise comparison between two indesign documents?  I need this for making sure of corrections made in documents i have.  Idealy it would work as a search function and enable the comparison of two different documents and highight any changes made between the two.  Thanks very much--c

Doesn't this approach only focus on errors?
I am not familiar with Preflight, but when I run it I only get errors.
I struggle with the same comparison issue. I need highly detailed comparisons.
When I try this in Acrobat Pro comparing the PDF outputs of two different InDesign files, it pretty much marks the entire document as changed.
I end up using a 3rd party tool (Araxis Merge) and doing a binary file comparison, then trying to figure out where in the INDD file the changes are.
Cheers.

    Hi,
It's ok to use fc command:
    >fc /?
Compares two files or sets of files and displays the differences between
    them
    FC [/A] [/C] [/L] [/LBn] [/N] [/OFF[LINE]] [/T] [/U] [/W] [/nnnn]

    FC /B [drive1:][path1]filename1 [drive2:][path2]filename2
/A         Displays only first and last lines for each set of differences.
      /B         Performs a binary comparison.
/C         Disregards the case of letters.
/L         Compares files as ASCII text.
/LBn       Sets the maximum consecutive mismatches to the specified
                 number of lines.
/N         Displays the line numbers on an ASCII comparison.
/OFF[LINE] Do not skip files with offline attribute set.
/T         Does not expand tabs to spaces.
/U         Compare files as UNICODE text files.
/W         Compresses white space (tabs and spaces) for comparison.
/nnnn      Specifies the number of consecutive lines that must match
                 after a mismatch.
      [drive1:][path1]filename1
Specifies the first file or set of files to compare.
      [drive2:][path2]filename2
Specifies the second file or set of files to compare.

You could get out your original DVD that came with your computer and install the developer tools that Apple provides.
Once installed, you can open /Developer/Applications/Utilities/FileCompare.app
    This is free and useful.
If you cant find your original DVD you can get if from developer.apple.com

  • CS6 Indesign files not fully loading

I have just purchased CS6 and created a few InDesign files. Now, on numerous occasions, when I try to open an existing file (not just one particular file), the file doesn't fully load. It shows some of the frame outlines and the graphic "content grabber", but all graphics and text do not load. While this is still trying to load, I can open another InDesign file (within the same ID session) and it's usually OK. Meanwhile the file I tried to open originally still won't load, and if I try to go back to it (or close it), the program stops responding. It doesn't do this every time I open Indesign, but at least 50% of the time.
I have reinstalled CS6, recreated preference files, follwoed every step of the "damaged file" help, but still no resolution. Any ideas please? To add to the scene, I did initially download a trail of InDesignCC, but when I purchased CS6, I uninstalled CC and use the Adobe Cleaner tool. Could this still be having an impact, and if so, how does one completely remove all tracse of the CC version?

    Hi Peter
I think I may have eventually stumbled upon something ...
I installed CS6 on my laptop to see if I would get the same problems. Initially I didn't, but did keep getting messages on opening file re embedded profile mismatch. All was OK when I just clicked OK, but when I went to switch the messages off (so indesign stopped asking question), the error returned. So I went back to my main PC, reset my preferences file to reset defaults again. As with laptop, I again got the embedded profile mismatch message and all the while I clicked OK, previous problem files, opened fine. So I thought I would try to chnage the embedded profile in a file, then save it - when I then tried to open the file again, I got the problem again!
For your info, my Indesign working space/profile is set to sRGB IEC6etc and the document was embedded with Adobe RGB. There was also a mismatch on the CMYK settings.
Does any of this help point in the right direction?
    thank you.

  • Indesign CS5.5 cannot open CS5.5 indesign file

    Hello all,
I created an InDesign CS5.5 file yesterday and today i can't open it anymore from the officer server.
When the file is on the server at the office and i try to open it, a pop-up shows this:
"Cannot open the file "filename.indd". Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing, or the file may be open in another application".
It doesn't work for any other InDesign files on the server neither and it is not open in another application or on another computer at the office.
When i transfer that file on my desktop it works fine, but i can't work that way at the office of course.
Has someone an answer to that ?
    Thank you,
    Thierry
    --------------------------------------------- EDIT ---------------------------------------------
For all who have this error, restart your machine and it works fine!
    Cheers,
    Thierry

Since you've shown us the folder contents it's a good bet it isn't in use (no lock file). And it doesn't look like the file is mis-named as there doesn't seem to be anything else there that would be the .indd file (but just in case, open it in TextEdit and paste the first few lines here so we can see what the file header says), so the most likely case is the file is damaged. Is that on a removable device of some sort?
You can try the tool at Repair corrupt InDesign Adobe files on Mac OS X  or send me a link to the file by private message and I'll try the recovery tool I have for Windows.

  • Is there a ruleset comparison tool available in the market?

    Dear all,
I wanted to know if there is a SAP GRC ruleset comparison tool available in the market? As a part of our audit requirement, I would need to compare our current rulesets with the ones from last quarter - To identify any changes/enhancements.
I know Bizrights Approva supports a comparison tool called ExamXML where we can perform a comparison of 2 XML files and figure out the differences/ changes.
Please let me know if any of you has used such a tool for GRC ruleset comparison.
    Thanks,
    Kunal

If any auditor is comparing sap delivered rule sets with a companies' grc rule sets (without deep investigations) and reporting the differences in his/her audit report (as white spaces)  then the auditor is doing it the wrong way.
The auditor should be aware of the following facts:
    1. SAP delivered rule sets are mere best practices (only starting point)
    2. Most of the customers modify/update the rule sets as per their requirements
    3. Organizational rules are created by customers differently
    4. Some customers don't even choose sap delivered rule sets and completely create their own.
So the difference between rule sets is obvious, but these findings may or may not be entirely appropriate to reach to a conclusion for audit purposes.

  • Elearning suite to Learning Management System (LMS) - how-to from an InDesign file?

We need to be able to export InDesign files to a portable SCORM format that could be loaded into various Learning Management Systems (LMS) – however, it is not obvious how we would do this? We need to publish our documents both in a book\PDF format and to various LMS systems such as Blackboard, Moodle, Angel, Desire2Learn, etc.
What am I trying to accomplish? Many of our College and University clients use Learning Management Systems (LMS).  SCORM is a standardized interchange format used to provide internet ready information (e-book data, test questions, etc.) to any LMS systems. We need to export formatted InDesign documents – which for us are our Lab Manual (book) publications which include: text, graphics, pictures, etc.
Adobe advertises SCORM compatibility as part of its e-learning suite: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/elearningsuite/els/extensions/WSD40882CF-6 C5C-46c0-8D51-273830EB036B.html --- however, I cannot find anyone who can tell me how to get there from InDesign.
In addition, I find it very frustrating that after many calls to Adobe sales and technical staff that I can't find anyone who can help me with the details of how to get from InDesign to Adobe's "SCORM Packager"  See: http://blogs.adobe.com/captivate/2009/01/scorm_packager.html which I believe is a part of the e-learning suite.
Is it possible to find a high level technical resource within Adobe that I could talk to who could help me with this issue --- we need to test the ability to produce SCORM compatible files from our InDesign files before we can make a purchase decision.

Adobe's Multi SCORM Packaging tool is designed to take existing single SCORM packages (in zip file format) and merge them into a multi SCORM package with a rewritten imsmanifest.xml file at the root level to tell the LMS what the package contains.  This allows the LMS to build the array of links that its SCORM player requires to allow the course user to navigate from one module to another.
So if InDesign is not currently capable of creating even a single SCO SCORM package, the Adobe Multi-SCORM Packaging tool is not going to be much use to you.
In reality, the Adobe tool is quite limited in functionality.  It's more designed as an add-on for Captivate to allow multi-SCORM courses to be created. Your best bet would probably be to investigate other SCORM packaging tools such as RELOAD that allow you to take content created elsewhere and add them to a SCORM package as resources.
You may need to export your InDesign content as PDF files and have these set up as individual resources or assets in the SCORM package.
However, for any of this to work with an LMS is going to require the final package to have a SCORM API (done with JavaScript) so that user interaction with the individual components of the course is relayed back to the LMS via JavaScript variables.  Packaging tools such as RELOAD may be able to do this with some types of content (e.g. HTML) but I don't know if InDesign output is going to be compatible with this approach.
Have you designed your InDesign course content with interactivity in mind, or is it just straight content delivered in a documentation format?

  • Indesign file re-open causes freeze/hang - but not on other Macs in the studio

    Hi,
I'm running Leopard 10.5.6 and Indesign CS3 5.0.4, as are the other 4 Macs in our studio.
I created a document on my machine, saved it to the network and have now come to edit it again; the machine freezes every time now when I try to open the file.
The file opens perfectly on any of the other machines in the studio. I have tried resaving, copying/pasting content to a new document, saving as an Exchange format and nothing seems to work.
I've run Onyx system tools, cleanded the caches etc, even verified Hard disk and Permissions using Mac OS installer CD.
All other indesign files I have tried to open using my Mac are fine, open with no problems.
Does anyone have any idea what's going on here? I can post the report Mac OS generates if that would help anyone.
    Thanks in advance,

  • PDF quality is degraded when InDesign file is reopened.

When I place PDF files in my InDesign document and print, or save to PDF immediately, the quality is great.
However, if I save the InDesign file and open it later, the PDF quality is much degraded. Too degraded to use.
I must make the document or book all over again.
Why does the PDF quality degrade when re-opening the InDesign?
    HOW CAN I PREVENT THIS?
    Thanks.

Regarding Peter's "be sure the link is up to date" because I was typing this after he posted:
Try placing a PDF into an ID doc, save the InDesign file, then reopen it. Select your placed file with the black selection tool, then go Window and select the Links panel. Looking at your linked image will tell you if InDesign can no longer find the image in the original location. (There'd be a yellow triangle with an exclamation point to indicate that the link is missing.)  When you place your PDF into InDesign, a 72ppi preview of your linked file is saved in the INDD. In order to print, or export a good quality PDF, InDesign needs to be able to find the linked file.
So when you reopen, ID for some reason can't find the file. This could be caused by a wide variety of issues, but the most likely is that you moved either the InDesign file, or the linked PDF. Or perhaps your linked PDF is on an unavailable network drive? If you tell us more about your working environment, we might be able to figure out why the link is breaking.

  • Another CS6 program open indesign files?

Can another program in CS6 open indesign files to read them?  We have a user who only needs to look at her employees' work and not edit it, we don't want to purchase the master collection or indesign seperately if we can avoid it.  Thank you!

InCopy is a tool used by writers, editors, and copyeditors in publication workflows. It is best used as a tool for editing copy, but if you want you can use it to preview documents. If the document doesn't open in Layout mode automatically, you can view it by changing the tab near the top of your screen.

  • InDesign files to Captivate 8 for LMS????

Our training manuals are currently published in InDesign. We are implementing an LMS and using Captivate as the authoring tool. What is the best way to get these files into Captivate? Should I copy/paste into PPT and then convert to InDesign????? Anyone have any ideas?

Sounds like a re-think might be needed. If you are working with InDesign files they are probably mostly oriented around TEXT. You could take the ideas incorporated in the text and design and develop interactive learning courses in Captivate. But there isn't really any benefit in just taking the InDesign files and then dropping them into Captivate, because that doesn't really make them any better, so save yourself the trouble of trying to figure out how to do that.
To create something interactive, you could stay in InDesign and add interactivity there--but it won't necessarily allow you to accumulate user's scores and such. There is a good program in this on Lynda.com.
Or, you could, as I said, start from the content in the InDesign documents and create a scorable course in Captivate.
Either way, the solution won't be instant, and there will be a learning curve involved. Best not to rush when you also have to learn. Clarify your long term goals for the project, see if there's an ugly short term solution (i.e., just putting up pdfs of the InDesign files on the LMS), and then get to work on the "beautiful" solution in the time you've bought.

  • Can't amend InDesign file??

    Hi,
I have recently been provided with an InDesign file and I need to update a couple of photos.  The problem is when I click on any tool and move it over the document, I get an icon of a pencil with a line through it, and I can't make any amendments?  Is there a simple setting I can change to get around this??
    Thanks,
    Andy

Layers panel. The current layer is locked, although the layer containing the images you want to edit may not be and you just didn’t click on them because of the cursor.

  • Looking for a LabVIEW "Comparison Tool"

    LabVIEW is hell to debug.
I'm working through Exercise 7-5 in the Intermediate I Course Manual. There is a Producer Loop, a Consumer Loop, and a Display Loop, each with a 8 to 12 element Case Structure.
Currently (11/14/2007), my project bombs consistently. Press Play, let it get half way through its cycle, press Stop, then the interface becomes unresponsive. I've tried enabling Highlight Execution, but there are many VIs that I don't understand (the manual has me drop them in) and so many things going on at once that I am lost.
I navigated to the Solutions folder, and opened the project. The solution (from what I can see) looks identical to mine, and it runs as it should.
I want to compare the two, so I tried to open another instance of LabVIEW so that I could look at each of the cases side-by-side. Naturally, LabSPEW (as we have come to call it) will not let you open 2 instances at one time.
Unlike normal languages (C++, VB, Perl), I can not print my code to see what went wrong (viewing on a screen is more difficult than looking at it on paper), and I can not use conventional comparison tools. It seems I am at the mercy of National Instruments to provide something.
I looked in the LV menus for a comparison tool. If it is there, it is either in an illogical spot or it is called something that I am not expecting.
I searched this forum for "comparison tool", but hundreds of irrelevant topics were all I could find.
Does anyone know how to compare one project to another using LabVIEW? Is this possible?
Angus Cattle from Pool Ranch and Steel Repairs via Joe's Welding.

To nrp: I printed the file to PDF (should be attached). (Maybe that will be good for "LabViewGu..." below.)
To LabViewGu...: New to LV (hence the Intermediate Course I'm taking). What do you mean by "post your code"? It's all in pictures! I guess I could say "Timing Module.vi Error In comes from here, Error Out goes to there," etc., but that would take forever!
To tst: I tried doing the compare, but when I went to Select... the file to compare it with, the C:\Solutions folder was not among the choices. I attempted to enter it manually, but LV said it was not a valid choice. My vi is listed in the "Compare VIs" dialog box as "TLC.lvproj\My Computer\TLC Main.vi" and it is physically located "C:\Exercises\LabVIEW Intermediate I\Course Project\TLC Main.vi".

  • Screen capturing method for InDesign files

Does anyone know the best method for taking screen captures for an InDesign file. I've tried a number of ways but am not please with the resolution I'm getting. The way I've done it thus far is capture the screen (with Print Screen), then crop off what I don't need in Photoshop. Then I save it as a .GIF and place it into InDesign. The .GIF ends up becoming twice the size of what it was as a .psd and the resolution isn't there. Do I need to use Snag It instead of what I'm doing? Would that help any?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Robyn

A while back I needed a good OCR scanning program so I bought ABBYY Reader. With this program they included a program called ABBYY Screenshot reader. I believe you can buy this as a standalone program if you do not need the OCR reader.
The screenshot capture can be used to capture any portion of a screen. It sits on top of whatever page you have open and you just use the tool and draw a frame around anything you wish to capture. Then you can choose several options on what format you want to sve it as. Like .pdf, .jpg, .tiff, .doc, .xls and several more. If you have the OCR program you can also save it as an editable screenshot. The OCR in ABBYY reader is probably one of the best in the world if not THE best.
I believe you can get a free trial to see how it works and also get lower pricing on specific modules depending on what you need.
