InDesign files automatically openning in Acrobat Pro 9.0

I just upgraded to CS3.3 Premium w/Acrobat Pro 9.0 from CS2 and now my ind files automatically open in Acrobat 9.0. Ind files all have the Acrobat 9.0 icon, which I went into properties > opens with to change (ie. program files > Adobe > InDesign CS3) and Windows will not accept the change. Actually when I click "ok" no error message appears, but 'opens with' still shows Acrobat Pro 9.0.
It gets wierder. If I go into properties and change 'opens with' to the IND short cut on my desktop, it changes, however when I attempt to open a ind file I get the error message 'file is not a valid Win32 program.'
I am running XP Media 2005 SP2, on an HP desktop, with an AMD 64 2.4 duo, 4 gigs RAM.
Any else have a similar issue?
Thanks, Anton

Anton,
I to had this problem just today and could not find any good help on file associations. I am running XP Pro on Windows. I uninstalled CS2 and still had CS3 on the computer. All associations for InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop went away. The only information I could find did not work.
This is what I did and it worked. I opened Control Panel, then File Options, and then the tab "File Types". I scrolled to the INDD extension and highlighted it. Then I chose the Advanced Tab, selected "new", typed in "Open" for the action and selected the InDesign.exe file. All Indd files associated with InDesign CS3.
I also repeated the same to get the AI and PSD files to associate.
I hope this is the right way to make the change, no guarantees, but so far it is working. Even CS and CS2 file versions show the CS3 logo and open correctly.

  • How do I keep downloaded pdfs from automatically opening in Acrobat on a MAC?

I am downloading pdfs from FETCH on a MAC and they are automatically opening in Acrobat. How do I download and not have them open? There are literally hundreds of them.
    Thanks,

    Hi Brian,
The Safari web browser contains a feature, enabled by default, which causes all files considered "safe" to be automatically opened once they have finished downloading. Safari considers the following file types to be safe:
    - Pictures
    - Movies
    - Sounds
    - PDF files
    -Text documents
    - Disc images (.dmg files)
    - Other archive types
Although it can be convenient while enabled, this can be a very dangerous feature when it comes to your security. It can be disabled in a few easy steps.
    > Open your Safari web browser by clicking on the Safari icon in the dock.
    > Click on Safari in your Safari menu, located at the top of your screen. When the drop-down menu appears, choose Preferences.
    > Select the General tab from the Preferences window, which is now overlaying your browser window.
You will now see a check box labeled "Open 'safe' files after downloading", located near the middle of the Preferences window. If this box is checked, click on the check mark and verify that it is no longer active.
Click on the red circle/x located in the top left hand corner of the Preferences window to complete the process. You will now be returned to your main browser window.
    Hope this helps.

    Rave

  • Are there settings in Acrobat to enable a PDF file to open in Acrobat or Acrobat Reader by Default rather than open in a Browser

Are there settings in Acrobat to enable a PDF file to open in Acrobat or Acrobat Reader by Default rather than open in a Browser

There is a check box in the preference (under edit). I have not had great success with this setting, but that is what it is supposed to do. Don't expect it to happen in Chrome that has it's own PDF viewer (or the preview function on a MAC). You might also check the settings for your particular browser.

If there is a way to automatically open an attached file in a Mail item, it is not one that I would use, because I want to stay in control of my Mac!  Who is it from, whats in it and so on... To me bad idea but then the choice is yours.

  • InDesign files are opening in InCopy

    Hi there,
Why is it that every time I click on an InDesign file it opens in InCopy?  I am a magazine designer so understand the purpose of InCopy. I have it on my computer only for emergencies with editors. But, these files were never put into InCopy nor do they have anything to do with InCopy. But when I click on an .indd file, InCopy opens and up pops my file.
    My particulars:
    CS3
    OS 10.6.6
    iMac Intel Core i3
Any advice or solutions would be appreciated. This is a mystery (and kind of annoying).

    Bob,
Finally getting back to this. Thanks so much.
When I do a right click I see that I can open the file in either incopy or indesign and I see that InCopy is the default. I want InDesign to be the default always. How do i change the default program?

  • Saving Acrobat 9.0 files to open in Acrobat 5.0

I just purchased Acrobat 9.0 Pro. We have a workgroup of 7 staff, 3 use Acrobat 5.0, 2 Acrobat 8.0 and 1 - Acrobat 9.0 Pro. The issue is that when we use 9.0 and try and save docs, then those working in 5.0 cannot open them. We have tried everything, optimisation PDF/X/A/E, etc. Still nothing, those using 5.0 cannot open the 9.0 saved documents. It states that the files have been damaged. Is there anything that can be done? Has anyone else encountered this issue?
Yes, the natural answer maybe to upgrade everyone to 9.0, but I don't wish to. One of the main reasons is that many of our clients do not have 9.0 reader.
    Any advice?

I had the same problem when I installed Acrobat 9.1.2 ... others with Acrobat 5.0 received the "damaged" message trying to open the files. I found this was fixed by re-saving the file in Acrobat 9.1.2 using the "Document", "Reduce file size", "Make compatible with Acrobat 5.0 and Later", "Save".  This works fine and the users with Acrobat 5.0 can open the file for editing/viewing.
This is tedious to do for every file printed.
I attempted to fix my problem ongoing by setting the Distiller settings that are supposed to be used by Acrobat. In Distiller V 9.1 "Settings", "Edit settings", "Compatability", picked "Acrobat 4.0 (PDF 1.3), "Save As". Distiller now displays "Compatibility: Acrobat 4.0 (PDF 1.3)".
However, when I then print from Acrobat 9.1.2 the resulting file's "Properties" displays "PDF Producer: Acrobat Distiller 9.0.0 (Windows)" and "PDF Version: 1.5 (Acrobat 6.x)". And the file can not be opened in Acrobat 5.0
This appears to be a problem with Distiller not correctly saving the PDF 1.3 parameters (it appears to save PDF 1.5 by default); I have contacted Adobe directly but have not received a reply.

  • Problems with reading a pdf-file using Safari/Adobe Acrobat Pro

Using Adobe Acrobat Pro 9.5.5. and Safari in Snow Leopard I open the pdf-file of  http://dare.uva.nl/document/505726 and small boxes appear in the text f.i. on page 70, 74, on the last page etc.
I don't know why those small boxes appear only on my MacBook Pro with the installed software and others don't read a corrupt text. If I click in den pdf-file on the right side of the mouse and choose "open with Adobe Acrobat Pro" the pdf-file opens correctly (without small boxes)!

As you discovered, Adobe Acrobat/Pro/Reader v.9 will crash for all managed user accounts that store their home folders on the server because it has "difficulty" reading and writing to a folder across a network, which is why it crashes shortly after it launches.
HOWEVER, there is hope. All you need to do is tell Adobe to write all of its files to the local drive rather than the home folder on the sharepoint, as follows:
While logged into your network-user account:
    1. Go to the "Shared" folder on the local drive. (Local HD > Users > Shared)
    2. Create a new folder named "9.0_x86" if you have an Intel or "9.0_ppc" if you have a PPC (without the quotes for either case). You will have to authenticate as an Administrator.
    3. Go to the Acrobat folder within the user's Application Support and delete the folder in it.
    (Home > Library > Application Support > Adobe > Acrobat > 9.0_x86 or 9.0_ppc)
    4. Open/launch the Terminal application found within the Utilities folder on you Mac.
    (Applications > Utilities > Terminal.app)
    5. In Terminal, enter the 1st command for Intel or the 2nd for PPC:
    ln -s /Users/Shared/9.0_x86 ~/Library/Application \Support/Adobe/Acrobat/9.0_x86
    OR
    ln -s /Users/Shared/9.0_ppc ~/Library/Application \Support/Adobe/Acrobat/9.0_ppc
Adobe Acrobat 9 should now work properly. You may get the "quit unexpectedly" error message the first time you quit the application, but should only happen the one time.
On a side note, the print spool is slow when printing very large multi-paged PDFs.
This is a fix I found in 2009 by Dennis, can't remember where though.

  • Opening a pdf file automatically opens last 13 pdf files viewed

I use Adobe Acrobat a lot and for some reason, I opened a pdf document yesterday and the last 13 files I viewed automatically opened.  I rebooted my computer and it still does the same thing.
Does anyone know how to switch off this automation?
    Appreciate anyone's feedback.
    Sincerely,
    dd1atslb

Do a Get Info on one of the PDF files - select the file (click it once), then press Command-I (Get Info in the File menu).
In the Get Info window, about half-way down is an item "Open with:" - set the pulldown menu in that section to "Preview".
If you want to make that change to all PDFs, then click the "Change All..." button.

  • InDesign wants to open in Acrobat Reader--please help!

I am new to this forum...I have Adobe Master Collection CS 5.5. When I try to open an InDesign CS 5.5 document--from a folder for example, it tries to open up in Acrobat Reader which it can't do. I have to launch InDesign and open the document up with File/Open. Bridge gives me the same thing--wanting to open with Acrobat Reader. In my earlier version CS 3, I could click on an ID file and both the file and program would open. If anyone has any suggestions, I would appreciate it!

So what can I do now, please?

Best thing would be to uninstall and reinstall. Personally, I'd reinstall both versions (in order). There is no need to uninstall older versions from a compatibility standpoint, and if you need to edit a legacy file you may find you want CS3. If you uninstalled to save some drive space, odds are good it's time to think about installing a larger hard drive anyway. It's your data files, not applications, that eat up the dirve space in a hurry.

  • Downloaded PDFs automatically open in Acrobat Readr. How switch to Preview?

I downloaded Acrobat Reader awhile ago, and since then downloaded PDFs from Firefox have opened in Adobe. I'd like them to automatically open in Preview. If I "Get Info" on a PDF, it still says that it will open in Preview. Do you know what I should do?

One thing you can check: go to the Firefox preferences and click on the Applications tab. Look in that list to see if there's an entry for PDF files. If there is and it's set to Acrobat Reader, click on the action and select Preview.
    Hope this helps.

  • Grab auto-save file type locked by Acrobat Pro?

I have tried using the posted command line in Terminal on both my iBook and G4 (both running 10.3.9) to get Grab to go back to saving screen shots as .jpg's, but it does not work. Ever since installing Adobe Acrobat Pro 6.0.0 both machines are saving screen shots only as .pdf's. In addition (and I have looked through all the AAPro preferences to see if there is something to 'turn off' - there isn't), AAPro has inserted toolboxes into all Office programs and I cannot get this to stop either. I've tried moving AAPro out of the applications folder, but this has had no impact. Any suggestions on a workaround?

Aha! Thanks. "PDFMaker Lib" was the file inside the Office folder. If that does not fix it I will search deeper into the folders for the culprit.
Still cannot switch Grab back to saving as .jpg vs. .pdf, using that command line in Terminal. Any suggestions on that issue? Do you suspect Acrobat Pro is involved due to the fact that this problem started about the same time?

Acrobat Pro puts a file in a folder in the Office
directory that causes the Acrobat Pro tool boxes to
    appear. Moving this
file will stop it from coming up. The folder is
called Extensions, or Add-ons, or Plug-Ins or
