InDesign files greyed opening from server

Hi all, this is an odd problem that has only just started happening recently. When I save a file from InDesign onto our server it is sometimes greyed out when I go to open it later from InDesign. I then have to go onto the desktop and open the file from Finder. It only happens sometimes and is corrected if I restart the computer. Any ideas why this might be happening?? Thanks!

Could be a time-sync problem with the server.

  • Ppt files not opening from server

    Hello all,
    Strange things are happening;
A MacBook (leopard) places a PowerPoint (ppt) file on the server. It has been made with Microsoft office 2008 and saved as 97-2004 compatibility because there are some co-workers who are not entirely up-to-date.
The files are placed on a 10.5.6 server with AFP, DNS, Open Directory, and SMB running. A client is opening the server share from its Vista client and double clicking the ppt to open it directly from the server, it starts up powerpoint in windows, but then it says "Document cannot be opened/read, do you want to open a copy?"
If so the document opens and can be read. On the server a copy appears.
If the vista client makes a copy of the file to its desktop and opens it from there, there is no problem at all.
Macs have no issue opening the ppt from the share.
Also, if the Windows client first makes a copy of the ppt and then opens it, its all okay. Its like Vista first needs to make the file "windows like" before able to open/edit it.
Repairing disk permissions, updating office with a service pack 2 is not a sollutions. Any1 any ideas?
    Many thanks.

  • How do I get pdf file to open from websites?

When I click on a pdf file to open from a website, Explorer tries to open the pdf, but reloads the page then errors out.  I am running XP pro with the Adobe Reader X.  I have tried to uninstall reader and re-install.  My registry is using the correct file.  The associates show reader as the default program.  I don't know where else to look.
    Thanks for your help.

What is your Adobe Reader version and your browser. If you are using Internet Explorer, use it in 32-bit mode.

  • InDesign files are opening in InCopy

    Hi there,
Why is it that every time I click on an InDesign file it opens in InCopy?  I am a magazine designer so understand the purpose of InCopy. I have it on my computer only for emergencies with editors. But, these files were never put into InCopy nor do they have anything to do with InCopy. But when I click on an .indd file, InCopy opens and up pops my file.
    My particulars:
    CS3
    OS 10.6.6
    iMac Intel Core i3
Any advice or solutions would be appreciated. This is a mystery (and kind of annoying).

    Bob,
Finally getting back to this. Thanks so much.
When I do a right click I see that I can open the file in either incopy or indesign and I see that InCopy is the default. I want InDesign to be the default always. How do i change the default program?

  • Modifying InDesign file that is on server is very slow

I have a user that is having issues modifying InDesign files that are on network storage.  There are other users that do not have any issues, users on the same network no more than a cubicle or two away.
The issue is that the program becomes to slow to use.  When the user opens a file on network storage even trying to modify a line of text in a text box brings the whole program to a complete stop and it takes about a minute to recognize that you are editing the selected box.  highlighting text is not even possible as it is so slow.
I have been having the user copy the file to there desktop from the server then save back when done (I think its more reliable this way anyways..) but they are curious as to why everyone else can work from the server and they cant.
    Any advice anyone?
PS: User is using a Windows laptop, core i5 4GB RAM and InDesign CS6

The ethernet connection is 100 mbps due to cisco phones.  I have not tired a different user yet I will have to try that out.
The 100mbps connection shouldn't matter though IMO as the file is like a 15MB file.  If it were a gig I would understand but we are talking a small file that should be loaded into cache upon opening anyways correct?

  • InDesign files automatically openning in Acrobat Pro 9.0

I just upgraded to CS3.3 Premium w/Acrobat Pro 9.0 from CS2 and now my ind files automatically open in Acrobat 9.0. Ind files all have the Acrobat 9.0 icon, which I went into properties > opens with to change (ie. program files > Adobe > InDesign CS3) and Windows will not accept the change. Actually when I click "ok" no error message appears, but 'opens with' still shows Acrobat Pro 9.0.
It gets wierder. If I go into properties and change 'opens with' to the IND short cut on my desktop, it changes, however when I attempt to open a ind file I get the error message 'file is not a valid Win32 program.'
I am running XP Media 2005 SP2, on an HP desktop, with an AMD 64 2.4 duo, 4 gigs RAM.
Any else have a similar issue?
    Thanks, Anton

    Anton,
I to had this problem just today and could not find any good help on file associations. I am running XP Pro on Windows. I uninstalled CS2 and still had CS3 on the computer. All associations for InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop went away. The only information I could find did not work.
This is what I did and it worked. I opened Control Panel, then File Options, and then the tab "File Types". I scrolled to the INDD extension and highlighted it. Then I chose the Advanced Tab, selected "new", typed in "Open" for the action and selected the InDesign.exe file. All Indd files associated with InDesign CS3.
I also repeated the same to get the AI and PSD files to associate.
I hope this is the right way to make the change, no guarantees, but so far it is working. Even CS and CS2 file versions show the CS3 logo and open correctly.

  • Cant open Indesign files unless opening through Bridge

We have just upgraded our PCs to CS5 & cannot open InDesign files unless we open them through Bridge, we have tried open with but this doesnt seem to work. Any suggestions? Illustrator & Photoshop are fine.

Sounds like an issue where either the folder you opened the last file from conventionally is no longer available or you do not have sufficient permissions to access it. The info on the last used folders/ files is retained by the programs and if something goes astray, that can cause this behavior. In any case, trashing the prefs to get rid of the wrongly stored paths might be enough, so try that. Simply move the files in C:\Users\[Your Name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\InDesign\Version 7.0\en_US out of the way and let the program create new factory defaults.

  • Saving a CS 6 Indesign file to open in CS 5.5

Can you save a CS 6 Indesign file to an earlier version? CS 5.5?

Can you save as CS 5.5?  I know about IDML and I can't risk "perfection".  The file is so small, I'm sure there are problems.  But I hears from Adobe that CS 6 can save to 5.5, I just need to confirm that.

  • InDesign file not opening on Mac

One of my indesign file crashed on couple of occasion and now it is failing to open. I deleted InDesign prefs files but that doesn’t seem to work. Is there some way I can manage to open the file?
    OS X 10.8.4
    InDesign CC, CS5 and CS6

Your InDesign file seems to corrupted severely. Did you try opening it on another system or a PC which has INDD installed?
You can check below resources to repair your INDD files.
Markzware offers corrupt InDesign repair services. You can send them file for an overview.
Download this InDesign Repair software and run a scan for the said file. This software repairs INDD files and will let you know if your file could be repaired.

  • Indesign file re-open causes freeze/hang - but not on other Macs in the studio

    Hi,
I'm running Leopard 10.5.6 and Indesign CS3 5.0.4, as are the other 4 Macs in our studio.
I created a document on my machine, saved it to the network and have now come to edit it again; the machine freezes every time now when I try to open the file.
The file opens perfectly on any of the other machines in the studio. I have tried resaving, copying/pasting content to a new document, saving as an Exchange format and nothing seems to work.
I've run Onyx system tools, cleanded the caches etc, even verified Hard disk and Permissions using Mac OS installer CD.
All other indesign files I have tried to open using my Mac are fine, open with no problems.
Does anyone have any idea what's going on here? I can post the report Mac OS generates if that would help anyone.
    Thanks in advance,
    Roland Kasicki

quicktime is a program not a format
even .mov is not a format but a container which can contain a vide range of formats
the core of your problem is finding out what the format of your files are
and if they are on the list of supported formats
if they are not you will have to convert your media

converting them should not reduce quality at all

  • Files wont copy from Server via AFP to local Drive

    Hi All,
I'm having trouble copying iMovie project files from an xServe to a local drive. I'm running Mac OS X 10.4.9, and what happenes is when I open the mount and find the file, I drag it accross the the users home folder-> movies folder and copy it. Problem is the source file is 3.14 gigs, and when it copys it copys a file thats 997KB is size, everytime and says its done sucsessfully. Obviously the file wont open.
    Can anyone Help?

I guess your having some permisssions lingo. iMovie projects are folders that are presented by the Finder as if it were files.

  • Is there a log of files/folders deleted from server?

Is there a log of files/folders deleted from our server that I can look at?

Hi again Christiaan, I'd be wary of upgrading your server just for this feature. This article mentions the pitfalls of the different server setups, loss of server preferences when upgrading etc...
The benefits of having file and folder creation/deletion logged could be easily outweighed by the loss of auto setup of users mail and the other features that 'just work' in a standard install.
    Cheers

  • Suddenly... I can't get my DNG files to open from LR5 to CS6.  What to do?

I am running Windows 8.  As of this morning, I can't get my files to open for external editing from LR5 to CS6.  No extenal editing at all actually.  Have checked forums and it's not addressed.

You need Lightroom 5.3 or newer in order to work with the NEF files. You can convert your files to DNG and use them with what you have now. Your choice. In order to have Lightroom 5.3 (might as well go to 5.7) you will have to purchase an upgrade.

  • Indesign file not open

    Hi,
When i am opening the indesign file the below error showing and the file is not open.  Any one suggest.

I'm afraid if the file is corrupt, there's little you can do beyond going to a back up. You might want to read this for future use in avoiding this type of thing: Why I Always Work in a Dropbox Folder and Why You Should, Too!BobLevine.us

  • Help with backing up files and opening from disk image.

I am trying to back up my hard drive so that I can send my PowerBook in for repair. I used disk utility from my Panther install discs to create a disk image of my HD.
The disk image was created successfully and mounts perfectly on my HD. I can open it and open all of my files from the disk image just fine when it is mounted on my PowerBook.
However, when I take it to a different Mac, things start getting sketchy. I can open Word files just fine, but Excel files claim they are read-only and cannot open. I checked the permission back on my PowerBook to see what was up, and the files were read/write for the owner and read-only for groups and others, but they should still open as read-only files right? I even checked the permissions on the Word files to see if there was a difference, but there was no difference.
I can take the external HD back to my PowerBook, remount it, and open everything fine, but then on the other Mac it is a no go.
I need to back this up for when it is out on repair, but I need to know that the files will open in case I need to restore my disk.
    Can anyone help??
BTW, I couldn't find the best forum to post this in, if there is a better one please direct me there...

    solution:
I went into the Apple Store nearby today to send my PowerBook off for repair for a screen issue, and in the process got help with my backing up issue.
It seems all one needs to do is copy the file from the external hard drive to the internal drive.
    It was that simple.
