InDesign Freezes when Missing Links Missing Fonts

When I open an InDesign document that has missing/updated links AND missing fonts InDesign in a sense "freezes" as with both these error pop up boxes it refuses to recognize when I click on the "fix" or "cancel" or "ignore" buttons. The only way out is to force quit and the next time I start up and open the document when these boxes pop up I click "ignore" very quickly and then fix once I am in the document. very strange I know. Has this happened to anyone else?!? If so, is there a fix? Better than force quitting?!?
I am working in CS3 and OS 10.4.11 (Mac of course :)

Just a thought -- if you use the Return key on the keyboard, does it dismiss the dialog boxes?

  • Does Indesign CS4 recognize missing fonts in links?

Could anyone tell me if Indesign CS4 (or any version of Indesign) will recognize missing fonts used in a linked image? We have a customer that is using Indesign CS4 they have linked images from photoshop (no fonts in the photoshop images) and .eps files that were created using Easy Barcode Creator. Indesign is not seeing that the font is missing from the eps file (easy barcode reader), nor is there an error when exporting a PDF or print a PS. Preflight in Indesign doesn't detect this either. If I open the eps in Illustrator then I get a font missing error. I don't want to open all the files (supporting links) to find out if I have missing fonts. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

I've been playing with this a little, and I get what you see, too with .eps files. Find font will list the fonts used in the links, but for the most part woen't tell you if they are missing (seems to know they're missing in placed .indd files, though). Not a whole lot of help, but at least it puts the list out front where you can see the fonts, and check to see what doesn't look familiar.
Maybe the scripting guys have some clever ideas.

  • InDesign Freezes when opening it

    Hi,
InDesign freezes when I open it. First it told me my recovery file was corrupted so I followed this procedure (InDesign crashes upon launch while attempting to recover a damaged document). It still does it when opening it. I have to run task manager and end the process of adb.exe *32 for the program to work
    I have windows 7
    Please help
    Thank you!

    CS6 on a Mac
Whenever I try to open the document and scroll past a certain page it crashes. Sometimes it does it right away on startup, also whenever I open the Pages tab indesign crashes.
I tried moving all of the links to a different location to see if there was a broken/damaged link- it did nothing. I also tried to replace my fonts and it crashed when I was in the process of doing so. I also tried to trash my preferences- this did nothing. I cant open it up and save it as an IDML now.
I can work in other documents, just not this particular one. So, my bet is it is a damaged font.

  • Why does my mac keep freezing when i link to sites with videos

why does my mac keep freezing when i link to sites with videos

Do you have any better luck with that if you update to iTunes 10.6.1.7?
From the notes for the release:
iTunes 10.6.1 provides a number of improvements, including:
    • Fixes several issues that may cause iTunes to unexpectedly quit while playing videos, changing artwork size in Grid view and syncing photos to devices.
    • Addresses an issue where some iTunes interface elements are incorrectly described by VoiceOver and WindowEyes.
    • Fixes a problem where iTunes may become unresponsive while syncing iPod nano or iPod shuffle.
    • Resolves an ordering problem while browsing TV episodes in your iTunes library on Apple TV.

  • I cant place a pdf in Indesign because of missing fonts

I am running into a problem with a pdf add I am trying to place in a booklet. When I go to export the Indesign  document it tells me it cant because the pdf I placed in it has a font I don't have. I always thought you could place and print pdfs without having all the fonts. I thought it was only if you wanted to edit the pdf that you needed the font. Isn't that the point of a pdf? Does any one have a good solution for this? I am using Indesign cc 201 on a mac. The pdf is secure so I cant run any sort of preflight or flattening on it( at least as far as I know).

Is the export really failing, or are you getting a missing font warning and cancelling? The ad may not look good, but you should still be able to export, I think.
But bottom line here is that you need to educate the folks who send in the ads so they always embed the fonts.

  • InDesign Freeze when "Packaging" files.

New Mac with Snow Leopard, 10.6.6 Just updated to CS5. "Packaging" will not complete on some documents (at least two files so far) if I ask it to gather the fonts as well. The same files works fine in CS4. Fonts are not protected.
I use FontAgent Pro 4.0.3 to handle fonts. I've flushed all font caches with Cocktail 4.8. Still no cigar.
    Anybody else seen this behavior?
    Thanks.

I am getting the exact same problem. Upgraded to 7.0.3 as well. Packaging my current document always freezes InDesign, and upon restarting it opens two versions of the same document as though there are two separate aliases. Packaging progress gets just to the very end of the progress bar, a folder does get created with the links and fonts subfolders, and an INDD file is created (but cannot be opened). InDesign doesn't budge once the progress bar freezes, and a force quit is required. I've been able to package several others prior to this in the past week. I'll try a few things with the document itself.

  • Why isnt Indesign CS5 showing "missing" fonts in the same way as previous versions?

A font in our layout is not displaying as italic (this is one of those situations where there are several weights in a font family and the italic is called Gotham Book Italic and not just Gotham Italic) and not highlighting at all in the layout with the pink box.
When you select the problematic type, the window shows it as [Italic] which would be fine on its own but when I go up to FIND FONT to find and replace all instances with the proper Italic font, it doesnt show up at all as a font, let alone as an issue.
So far, purchasing CS5 Design Premium seems to have been more trouble than its worth.

I think maybe it would be a good idea to run the file through .inx or .idml. See Remove minor corruption by exporting

  • Indesign freezes when opening "pages"

I can't work in my indesign document because it keeps shutting down and "sends a report to adobe". When i open "pages" it automatically crashes. I was able to work on one page, but when I tried to scroll through my document it crashes. HELP!!

  • Why does InDesign freeze when I open it and run slowly?

I've been having problems with InDesign ever since I got CS5, and it's at the point where I can't even do simple projects. Every time I open InDesign, it freezes. I can't click anything in the program and it won't even minimize or close. The only way to close it is from the Task Manager. Nothing else works. On the rare occasion that it does work (after waiting about five minutes for it to un-freeze), it takes a long time to open any file, even really small ones. When they do open, it freezes for about a minute any time I try to move something, change text, change colors, or pretty much change anything. This is the case even on one-page documents with minimal text and a few images. The only thing that isn't slow is exporting PDFs.
At first I thought that it was just slow when I also had Photoshop open, but that's not the case because it still performs slowly and freezes all the time when the only other program I have open is Outlook.
I really appreciate the help... I can't even do any work right now and I'm running out of time.
    Windows 7 Professional
    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU
    RAM: 4GB
    InDesign version 7.0.3
Let me know if you need to know any more specs... I apologize, I really have no idea what you need to know.
    Thank you so much!!!

The DPI is at the default setting, so that's not it. I'm going to disable Aero and see if that works, but its hard to tell right away because sometimes it does work. I don't know if that could really be causing it though because it's not just clicking that's not working. It's bascially like the InDesign interface becomes my desktop background. It doesn't close or minimize and I can't interact with it at all.
I will see how it behaves today with Aero disabled. Thank you for the tip!

  • Why does Indesign freeze when I do small tasks

I try to add a stroke or change the fill to a specific object within a specific document in Indesign and it always freezes.  I had the trial version and I have just bought the creative cloud suite.  This was never an issue when I had the trial version and no extra downloading was needed when I paid for the yearly subscription.  Indesign also became very slow and a few background changes in my Indesign documents suddenly changed when I bought the software.  All I have installed on my computer from cc is Indesign, Photoshop and Illustrator.  This is no different than when I had the trial version. Whats happening?

Does it just freeze for a moment or longer? If only moment, then it might be caused by Preflight being activated. Preflight checks the whole document with every change you do.
While editing it is recommended to switch off preflight.

  • InDesign freezes when resizing text frames

I've placed a Word document with lots of tables and other graphics, and when I try to resize a text frame, InDesign frequently freezes. I have to shut it down in Task Manager and restart, often losing a lot of work. This happened once before with a similar project from the same client. I thought maybe it was some odd corruption in that file, so I muscled through it, but here it is happening again. Anybody have this issue before and know how to resolve or prevent it?
    I'm working with CS6 in Windows 8.
    Thanks.
    ~Valerie

First of all, ID CS6 has a auto-recovery feature, so when closing it in the task manager you should not loose a lot of work, but the one since the last auto-save.
However, software is not prefect, so the one way to prevent it would be to place a PDF version of your Word file, making it uneditable.

  • InDesign freezes when printing to a PDF and have Outlook open

I am not a patient person by nature. So, while I am waiting for my InDesign document to collect all its info before asking me where to save my printed PDF, I go compose an email in Outlook. When I do this, the dialog box for me to browse for the folder I would like to save the PDF to and the Outlook window disappear. What is going on?

This type of issue probably relates to the amount of system resources and virtual memory used by each of the programs - i.e. InDesign and Outlook - but not to bugs particular to either one. Outlook (including Outlook 2007) uses a tremendous amount of virtual memory (possibly up to a three gigabyte limit) and by extension, real memory when you have a large number of messages in your active InBox or whatever folder(s) are open. Similarly, when printing or exporting PDF, InDesign calls in a number of resources, especially the Adobe PDF Library and the Adobe Graphics Manager, that also have a tremendous hunger for virtual memory space, especially if you are working on a very complex document. When I've seen this type of problem or better when I proactively want to avoid this problem when I know I am exporting very large, complex documents, I close down Outlook and often save my InDesign document, close InDesign, and restart InDesign. Sometimes, rebooting my system minimizes this problem. And it is possible that you have specified too small a paging file or have run out of disk space for paging files if you let the system handle this matter automatically.
My perception is that with my migration of my main system to Vista 64-bit with a larger amount of main memory and larger available address spaces, I haven't recently seen this problem reoccur.
By the way, I've seen similar issues if you have InDesign and Photoshop open and then try to open Illustrator - it simply craps out without any rational message. Open Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop in that order and Photoshop won't hog the systems' virtual memory.

  • If your illustrator is freezing when initializing or reading fonts...

This problem is an adobe issue.  Apparently there was a bug in the last group of updates.   Follow this link to solve the issue.
    http://go.adobe.com/kb/ts_cpsid_53468_en-us
This bug affects all versions of Illustrator and if you are running any CS suite you will need to re-submit your password on indesign as well after completing their "fix"
I've seen a few posts where people cannot find where to place the replacement files.  use your spotlight to find and replace.  much simpler.  Hope this helps

i have the same problem, but I can't print anything out of AI 4.  Not even as a PDF. Amd I can't change the printer. Was exporting it to the hard drive but printing was not good-can't adjust the layout on the page, and weird thing, there was 2 color in the latest thing I designed and it only printed b&w.  Customer service told me to go elsewhere (I am being polite here). I have found the only workaround I could do which is save it as a pdf and print from the bridge. I real pain but at least it prints.  I am not a computer genius to do all these other workarounds people have suggested. If there is a bette,r easier solution I would love to hear it. I have Mac osx 10.9.

  • InDesign freezes when a library item is dragged into a new document

I'm using InDesign CS5.5 and I save individal articles as library items and then drag them into a larger document. This works fine, unless the library item includes images and then the program is very slow (almost frozen) until I exit and go back in again. Does anyone know how to fix this or work around it?

    Hello,
You need to use "Update List Item" action to update any item in list/library. Refer this link for sample:

    Hope it could help
