InDesign generated 'Press Ready' PDF files

I have always prepared images (300dpi resize & CMYK conversion) in Photoshop and imported them into Indesign.  Is this even necessary now? Does a 'Press Ready' PDF generated from InDesign do all of this? I understand that if an image is low res to start with then it's never going to be good - but if the image is high res (say 5000px x 3500px) and imported into a 5cm x 10cm image box - and only displaying at say 7% size will the PDF export have a 300dpi file at 1:1 final print size. I'd actually like to keep all images in RGB for all purpose use and avoid doubling up on disc space.

Whatever you say 300dpi is an industry standard resolution for platemaking
The problems with getting caught up with 300ppi as a magic number can go both ways.
This image which is a combination of line art and color would benefit from more than 300ppi (if you care about the 6pt. captions and fine keyline):
This image has no details or high contrast edges that would need 300ppi to resolve:
300 is a useful catchall but doesn't guarantee anything.

I need to make a pdf document, already made in photoshop, 'page turn' and then add it to my website as an e-brochure. I know I can do this in indesign but indesign will not open pdf files for some inexplicable reason. Any ideas how I can do it without completely starting again?

    Hello waitingone,
please try this (all terms are translated from my German programs to my best knowledge):
    1. Did the creator of the pdf file enable the import options?
    2. See import options: choose an other visibility option for your layer.
    3. Let you show the import options and click into one with a black background and try these out (often a gray is selected).
    4. See trimming: try the different modes there. Often works: "Media".
    5. Is the pdf file (eg from Word) correctly created?
    6. Is the PDF file protected? >>> no import possible.
    7. If that does not help, store the pdf file in Acrobat, repair possible errors, run the PDF Optimizer before placing in InDesign.
    Good luck!

  • Medium Resolution the default for Press Ready PDF?

After creating a document in ID3, and exporting to a Press Ready PDF, it automatically says, under the Advanced tab that the
Transparency flattener has set the preset resolution to "Medium".  If all of the images are at high quality and 300 ppi why would this say "medium"?
    Thanks.
    Gordon

Soooo, worked on this with my printer and this is what we came up with. He sampled the different Images (on one doc) and some came in at 230 dpi. some 600. so we have concluded that Pages will do a good job as for keeping the res. You just have to make sure; for example the 230 was a 300 5x7ish then I resized in the Mask to go up width 2 inches and of course lost the res.- so of course i must go back to the source and make my adjustment say in photoshop. WORK FLOW- i have decided to just layout> then go back as needed ( just the enlarged image). CMYK- the printer said DON"T take it out to photoshop to convert to CMYK ( as they can do it easy enough) and you risk sharpness in the font.
So that was a fun day of research!

  • InDesign Transparency Effect vs. pdf file size

I have an Interactive pdf that was created from InDesign. There is  "inner glow" is an effect style created box style. This box style is used a number of times in the 30  page document. The glow is a gradient from black to transparent which looks  like an inner shadow for the boxes (sample attached). When I generate the pdf file, size is about 12 Mgb, too large for the target audience.
When I alter the style in InDesign to say something simple like a 10%  black solid fill, the pdf file size decreases to about 1 Mgb.
Looked into "flattening transparency" options but this creates pdf that has none of the interactive buttons and links that are required.
Really would like to avoid creating these boxes in photoshop since there are about 40 different sizes of the box.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

For some reason I can't find reply on Forums site, so replying to this
    email
Exporting an Interactive pdf using the attached (15.8) jpegs settings
creates a file that is 15.8 Mgb.
Exporting an Interactive pdf using the attached (14.5) jpegs settings
creates a file that is 15.8 Mgb.
    Any ideas??? Thanks.

  • Looking for a way to create/edit a newsletter online, then be able to generate a customized PDF file

I am looking for a way to be able to customize a newsletter online, then be able to export/generate a PDF file from that newsletter.
Basically this is for a friend that is a real estate agent, and currently she is creating the newsletters in MS Publisher. I'm hoping to find a way to be able to allow her to login to a secure area of her webpage(that part isn't a problem) but then be able to create/customize a monthly newsletter that needs to be customizable.
For example, the August Newsletter will be 2-sided, and most of the newsletter will be the same, but she needs to be able to have a newsletter for different apartment buildings so the customers can just go to their building link/area on the webpage and be able to download that month's custom PDF file that has a portion of the main newsletter that is a table/list of properties for that specific location.  The data will be stored in a database.
After writing the above, I can probably create a front-end to the database so she can enter everything that way, but I still need a way for her to generate the customized PDFs after she is done with that month's data.
I was hoping Adobe had something that could be used, or am I stuck using php or Javascript and just doing this with custom scripting?
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks!
    John

I think you will have to do the latter.  While you are thinking about writing the PDF file, don't overlook fpdf (google it)....

  • InDesign export to single PDF files with variable Filename

Hi there,<br /><br />I create a document with Data Merge which contains about 200 Pages. Now i want to export each page to a single PDF-File. Also the filename has to be generated from the placed content. The placed content are adresses. So i want to generate a filename with a static name. I got an ID, a static phrase and then a ZIP-Code. The Filename should look like this: <ID>September<ZIP Code>.pdf while ID and ZIP Code are fields from the datamerge.

what you need is to operate throuh a loop.<br />for(i=0; i<app.activeDocument.pages.length;i++)<br />{<br /> //Assuming you labelled the textframe containing the ID with ID<br /> var myID = app.activeDocument.pages[i].textFrames.item("ID").contents;<br />//Assuming you labelled the textframe containing the ZIP with ZIP<br /> var myZip = app.activeDocument.pages[i].textFrames.item("ZIP").contents;<br /><br />var myPath = //something like "/disk/folder/" //Set a path to where you want to export the pdf<br />var myFileName = myID + myPath + myZip + ".pdf";<br />//Export to PDF - the forum is full of examples, you should find easily what you are asking for with search<br />} <br /><br />Loic

  • Why are the colors (red mostly) in my Press Quality PDF file darker than Original AI file?

    Hi,
I am new to CS5 and have been doing a lot of researching and testing saving AI CS5 files in "Press Quality" PDF format.  When I preview the PDF files in MAC's Preview application (will get Acrobat Reader as well) everything looks nice and crisp, but the colors are a bit on the dark side compared to my original AI files, namely the burgundy.  Needless to say, I am only using CMYK and the resolution has been set to High.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Hi again John,
Now I am sitting in front of the right computer and I just checked the CMYK profile in AI and it says: North America Prepress 2.  I found the following tutorial on the internet and this guy says that it is best to use a CMYK profile called BEST WORKFLOW which is supposed to accurately display colors across all platforms.  In the tutorial, he also added that if you do not see this profile listed then you should Load (directly from the CMYK profile window) it from your computer.  However, I was unable to locate this profile on my MAC and since this tutorial is based on AI CS2, I am unsure if I can use it.

Which CMYK profile would you recommend that I use?
    Many thanks,

  • Unable to generate and open pdf file

I am unable to open your PDF files generated with BO any more after upgrading my adobe to 9.3. Xcelsius SP3 is installed on my system.
    Can somebody please guide me?

    Hi,
We are having the same problem as well. When we tried exporting to a PowerPoint (*.pptx) file we noticed additional a piece of information appear in the notes section:
"IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT XCELSIUS CONTENT EMBEDDED INTO THIS SLIDE - PLEASE READ ON IF YOU ARE EXPERIENCING DIFFICULTIES!
This PowerPoint slide has Xcelsius content embedded into it and certain restrictions apply:
1). Information message shown when you open this slide deck: "Some controls on this presentation canu2019t be activated. They might not be registered on this computer".
You need the latest Adobe Flash Player on your machine to view the embedded Xcelsius content:
a). Close PowerPoint - make sure you DO NOT SAVE this slide deck.
b). Using Internet Explorer install the latest Adobe Flash Player from adobe.com
c). Open this PowerPoint slide deck again.
2). A design-time thumbnail is not shown for the Xcelsius content when you open this slide deck until you enter and exit Slide Show mode.
3). Office 2007 files (.pptx) do not support Xcelsius embedded content - save as an Office 2003 file (.ppt) instead.
For more information refer to the Export to Microsoft Word 2007 and PowerPoint 2007 section in the Xcelsius release notes.
4). The Xcelsius visualization shows error code messages (#2048, etc).
Flash security restrictions have prevented the embedded Xcelsius content from accessing external data.
To allow the Xcelsius embedded content to access external data refer to the Adobe Flash Player - Security Issues section in the Xcelsius release notes.
Note: To allow embedded Xcelsius content in a PowerPoint slide you have to add POWERPNT.EXE as a trusted Adobe Flash application:
              Office 2003 path example -  C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\POWERPNT.EXE
              Office 2007 path example -  C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\POWERPNT.EXE"
I bet there is some sort of similar procedure needing to take place on the Adobe Reader/Acrobat side to add as a Trusted application.
    Has anyone tried this?
    Thanks,
    Phil

  • How to stop tumbler from generating thumbnailers for pdf file

I'm using tumbler for thunar to generate thumbnailers, which works quite well. But I don't want it to generate pdf thumbnailers, since they are not in the same size. I've searched much, but not found any config file for tumbler. Any ideas? Thanks.

    Hi Aashi,
So here is what I understood from you issue.
    1. You are creating a work item and sending a notification to the WI recipient about the task which is available in his inbox.
    2. Upon checking the mail the agent might open the WI which is in ready state and with taking any action on it he might close or click on back button.( So this action makes the work item status change from READY to INPROCESS state).
After this I am not sure what is that making you to create another worktiem.
what I would like to suggest is you can check the status of the work item from SWWWIHEAD table based on the work item ID.
Next what I would suggest is to tweak you workflow design to include Deadline monitoring LATEST END. and it should be modeled. in this case what you can do is you can just set the previous work item to Obsolete and create a new work item.
The other possibility  to fix your issue could be make use of the PORCESS control step after validating the state and of work item and set the work item to obsolete or logically deleted. so this makes the old work item cleared and the new work item appears in the users inbox.

    Pavan

  • Press ready PDF from Pages (CMYK + Distiller)

Sorry for the odd title but i wanted to get as much information in there as possible. I am in the process of switching printing companies for the support propaganda that i use to promote my artwork. I make one of a kind pieces of furniture.
In the past I have used inDesign to prepare the layout and then I export a PDF as per the printers instructions. I always start in Pages as it is so fluid for me to use. I want to try to avoid inDesign this time and I could use some advice on getting the most out of Pages.
In this case I am working on a tri fold. The text in it is black or grey and the images have a 1 pix black border around them. The printer specifies values for rich black that i understand how to add via the color wheel and the CMYK sliders.
As of now I have added the images from Aperture.
I set up a pdf preset from Adobe Distiller that converts the images to CMYK and resizes them to 300DPI via bicubic sampling. compression is set to Zip. The printer does not want a color profile so none is imbedded.
From Pages I can print to my Adobe Printer and choose those presets.
    What do you think?
Would I get better results if i exported my Aperture images as Tiffs and converted them to CMYK in Photoshop (my old inDesign work flow) and then added them to pages?
I am looking to get the best results for the images and simple text that i use. I should mention the the last element that I have is white text over an image. Are there any problems with Pages created text or graphics when sent to a Professional Printing Press?
Many thanks and I would be happy to provide more information if it would help in answering my questions.

  • How to paginate an Indesign document with a PDF File?

    Hi everyone!
I'm a french student and i have to do a document on the movie IN TIME (2011) by Andrew Niccol, and i wanted to paginate my document in the style of the counter the characters have on their arms (0000.00.0.00.00.00).
I created it on Photoshop, as a simple Text, and i wanted to know if there was a way to paginate automatically all the document with this file (changing the numbers automatically)? Moreover, it would be perfect if it could be decreasing, like the counter, to have the last paged numbered 0000.00.0.00.00.00.... ?
    If someone has an idea....
    Thank you for helping me!
I added snapshots to make my question more clear:
PS: I'm sorry for my poor English...

This is a job for Data merge, if using the photoshop files, but I'm not seeing anything in the screen shot that looks like it must be done in Photoshop because it is impossible to do in ID, which makes life simpler, so I'd just place a text file for the page numbers.
Start in Excel and make a one-column table with your numbers in descending order. After you enter the first three, you should be able to get Excel to autofill the rest. Save as a text file.
In InDesign add a frame to the master page where you want the number to appear, and rotate as desired. Don't forget to thread them together if you put a frame on both pages in the master spread. It looks like this frame is going to need to be on a new layer above other content. Create a paragraph style with the character color and the keep options (start in next frame) to use for the numbers. Also create an object style to add the glow on the text and apply it to your master frames. You can also include the paragraph style in your object style, but you must still select it inthe Paragraph Styles panel before placing the number list or the current default paragraph style will override the object style and things won't work as planned.

  • InDesign, Press Ready, Photoshop Elements

I would like to create a press-ready pdf using InDesign CS4.  I want to place a photo I've adjusted in Photoshop Elements 5 into my InDesign document.  I've been told the photo would be RGB and I need to create a CMYK document.  Is there anything I can do to make the photo CMYK?  (As is probably evident, I'm very new to design!)

    Not to worry.
Place the photo and use the Press setting when exporting the PDF. InDesign will take care of the conversion for you.

  • How to preserve a background color, when generating a PDF file

I am trying to create a PDF file from some application. Please note that the picture in this application has the black background. So I invoke a Print command and set a printer as "Adobe PDF". As a result, I have generated
a brilliant PDF file of my picture, but on the WHITE background. When selecting the Adobe PDF printer, I have looked through all its settings ( in the Adobe PDF settings, I have found several tabs: General, Images, Fonts, Color, Advanced, PDF/X), none of them generated the original background color.
So how can a generate a PDF file, having the original background color (black, in my case) ?
    Oleg

Now I feel that the background definition in the Adobe PDF printer and the background definition in the application the Adobe PDF printer is invoked from -- two different things. So I guess how can I define the black background in the Adobe PDF printer? I cannot find such settings.

  • How to generate PDF file through reports using forms 6i

    Hi all,
I am using oracle 10g with forms 6i and reports 6i.I need to generate pdf file where clicking a button a report should be called and the report should be generated as a .pdf file in the source i have specified(ex. d:\...).Is this popssible with forms?.how can i achieve this.Kindly help me with suitable answers. Thanks :)
    Regards
    Vids

    hi,
regarding report, there is a dedicated report forum. you should post there.
but answer for your question is form is nothing to do with the pdf generation. you can call the report from the as usual.
In the report you should set the properties like
    destype to 'file'
desname to 'path with file name'
    desformat to 'pdf'
