Indesign 'hides'

I don't know if this is an InDesign thing or a Leopard issue. Using InDesign CS3.3 on an iMac running 10.5.5. Working on one file in InDesign, I've opened another in order to copy from it and paste into the current document. When I open the 2nd document, it shows for a split second and then both documents disappear. InDesign still shows as being open (little light under it in the dock), but selecting it does nothing. If I'm in the Finder and select the icon, the finder remains active, same if I'm in any other application - InDesign remains inactive.
Expose does not show any InDesign windows, and in the Force Quit menu, InDesign is shown as being open and active. The ONLY way I can get InDesign to respond is to Force Quit and then re-start it. It happens about once every 2 days (for about the last week) - haven't lost anything (yet) but it's getting a little tiresome.
On another note, I have exactly the same setup at work and InDesign WON'T hide!If I option-click outside the document window, the Finder comes to the front but all the InDesign windows remain on screen, and "Hide InDesign" from the menu does nothing...

>>Leopard issue. Been discussed to death here and in the Creative Suite forum.
I've searched all Adobe forums and this is the latest post on this issue. Any resolution anywhere?
I can work around not being able to hide ID, but this one, when opening another file and having ID entirely disappear (but icon in dock indicates it's running), requiring Force Quit, is annoying.
Can anyone direct us to any workarounds in other places?

  • InDesign hides with Leopard 10.5.4

    I have been hiding and back again and it works!!
    j.

    Okay, no love. ID CS3 5.0.3; OS X 10.5.4, PPC (G5)
    While in InDesign, type command+h. InDesign does not hide. If, after invoking said key-command (or menu item) when I then switch to another app, then back to InDesign, it then hides, and will not unhide. Has to be force-quit.
    I'm sure Adobe blames Apple, and Apple blames Adobe, right?

  • Hide Frame Edges CS3 Tiger G5 processor

    Everything I have read seems to indicate that COMMAND+H does not hide frame edges, it hides the entire INDD CS3 app. BUT this is only happening while running Leopard 10.5 on an intel processor machine.
    It is happening to me running Tiger 10.4, G5 processor.
    What is troubling is that the view menu still shows COMMAND+H is the hide frame edges command. It does not show CONTROL+COMMAND+H as this forum indicated.
    NOW the keyboard shortcuts under the edit meny shows CONTROL+COMMAND+H is the hide indesign key command.
    So what I have going on is indesign hides when I do a COMMAND+H AND it hides when I do a CONTROL+COMMAND+H!
    SO HOW DO I HIDE FRAME EDGES USING A KEYBOARD COMMAND?

    Well I did go through the menus and that's what spurred my question.
    The VIEW menu states that the keyboard shortcut "COMMAND+H" toggles hide/show frame edges but is does not. It hides the entire application.
    "W+SELECTION Tool" works ok if "show frame edges" is already toggled on.
    I need to see where the frame edges are for non stroked TEXT boxes in a customer supplied file.
    I'd like to be able to toggle show/frame edges on/off without mousing and have the guides toggled off. Perhaps the "W" thing will work and I'll try it but the "COMMAND+H" shortcut is still wrong. CS2 works fine, what the view menu shows in CS3 is wrong. Same machine has both applications loaded so it is not an OS/processor issue. Appears to be an oversite in the CS3 application.
    NEWS FLASH
    I just found that if I do an OPTION+COMMAND+H, the finder and all other applications will hide, I can then immediately do a COMMAND+H to show/hide Frame edges. If I go to the finder or other application then back to indesign the "hide indesign" behavior takes place.
    So it looks like I must first hide all other active applications (OPTION+COMMAND+H), then toggle the frames using the COMMAND+H.

  • Multiple paragraph styles in one line

    I'm creating a training manual and I am having trouble with paragraph styles. Here's an example of what I am trying to do:
    "The Dog walks up the hill"
    In the above example, I have created a style for the bolded text and connected it my table of contents. The idea is when I create and update the TOC, "The Dog" will be the entry with the remaining text omitted from the TOC. The issue I am having is because the text is on one line, I cannot have multiple styles. I've tried writing just "The Dog" and then either changing the style or deleting the paragraph break to connect the text below to the main line. Once I erase the paragraph break and the text is on one line, only ONE style is maintained. Now, I can modify the character style; however, because the paragraph style is still the one connected to the TOC, the entire paragraph appears in the TOC.
    Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I've searched everywhere to no avail.
    Thank you very much for your support.

    It depends on the breed of dog.
    Is the paragraph always a single line?
    Is this dog the leader of the pack? IE, does the phrase you want to keep always begin the paragraph? If so, then you can separate the dog from the pack in the TOC. One way is to surround the pack with a unique character or marker in the main text, like End Nested Style Here, - one after dog, and another after hill, and create a paragraph style for the doggie paragraph to use in the TOC. This paragraph should contain a nested character style that applies microscopic text properties, like paper character color, font .1pt, and horizontal scale .1%. The TOC entries should use nested paragraph styles; the source paragraphs need you to insert the End Nested Style Here markers. The nested style definition in the TOC paragraph styles should apply no character style through the first end nested style marker, then apply microscopic through the next end nested style marker. This will shrink the walks...hill text to an invisible speck, so small that it shouldn't interfere with tab leaders and page-references.
    Another approach is to use a single-row table for the heading, with the dog pent nicely in the left cell, and the pack in the right cell. Each cell contains a paragraph, so only extract the dog to the TOC.
    Search Google for terms like "InDesign hide part of paragraph in toc knowhowpro," "InDesign suppress part of paragraph in contents knowhowpro," "InDesign two paragraph styles on one line," and similar phrases without quotes for some good discussions and a variety of approaches that include layers, anchored frames, and conditional text.
    Search Google for terms like "InDesign conditional text," and "InDesign nested paragraph styles," without quotes for details.
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/3206266 has a long discussion that may shed some additional light.

  • CS3 Auto-Hiding & Can't Show

    I've been having a problem with InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Dreamweaver automatically hiding themselves (switching between programs or Finder), and then they won't re-show (via Command-Tab or the Finder dock).
    I always have to Force Quit the problem application to get back to work.
    All updates are installed.
    It would be very odd that all four applications' preferences are bad, so I don't see that as a solution.
    Anyone else having this problem?

    Hi Bob,
    I've read some of the InDesign-specific/Leopard threads. I can live with the currently open document not hiding when the rest of InDesign hides. I have not read/seen others.
    I'm talking about the whole program hiding, on its own (no input from me). Then nothing will work, other than Force Quit. Even quitting, or accessing the open files from the dock doesn't work.
    Thanks!

  • Text variable over more than one line

    Hi,
    I want to use text variables in table cells. But if the content of the variable is to long to fit in one line, then InDesign hides the complete content of the variable. I thing, this is a "no-go" for text variables. What, if it currently fits and then I increase the character size so that it will not fit? Ughhhhh!
    Is there a work-a-round for this problem?
    What do you think about it?
    Should this behaviour changed in future releases of InDesign?
    With Greetings from Germany
    Ralf
    (sorry about my not really good english)

    What I've done in the past is
    Find out how many characters per line.
    Setup character style called VarLine 1, VarLine 2, VarLine 3 etc.
    Set up a paragraph style for your text.
    Go to the nested style.
    VarLine 1 up to # characters
    VarLine 2 up to # characters
    VarLine 3 up to # characters
    etc.
    Set up your Variables for
    Line 1
    Line 2
    Line 3
    Then set each one to pick up the appropriate VarLine character style.
    This works to a certain extent, it will need tweaking, as each application is different. I'm not sure if it will work in your case, but you never know.

  • Some suggestions for DPS Folio Builder and Producer...

    Aside from some speed improvements, these tools fall short of a decent production system. Some improvements would be good for 2015.
    • red light / green light on wether an article in the folio builder needs updating.
    • put the order of the Kicker and the Article Title in the order it appears in the app (in Folio Producer) (i.e.: Kicker first!).
    • frequently after signing in to the Folio Builder, Indesign 'hides' itself and the finder appears. Irritating! Doesn't crash InDesign, just hides it in the dock.
    • On leaving the Folio Builder for a period, and then tapping on it - say after one hour dormant, it crashes InDesign, regularly.
    • it would be great to drag and drop several articles in Folio Builder and be able to move them. Currently only one at a time seems to work.
    • show a small thumbnail in the article of the indesign page (instead it shows a white page)
    • in 'article properties' KICKER should be at the top to replicate where it displays in the HUD. So many people get mixed up with this.
    • it would be great to change the name of an article by clicking on the name - not having to change 'article properties' - the same way that MSO names can be edited
    • would also be good to select the various options for articles in the FB by holding down CTRL or ALT
    • have an option to 'UPDATE ALL' in the drop down options in FB
    Just some ideas - these would all help greatly.
    Dave

    I'd love to see native widgets in the Folio Overlays window like in Muse (or Twixl) for Google Maps, Youtube and others.
    Also more transitions for slideshows, and better image resolution for PDF articles (108ppi or 72ppi for graphics, depending on what you're doing, isn't enough for my clients).

  • How to show/hide an indesign document in cs4

    Hi all,
    How to hide/show an indesign document in cs4.
    In cs3 , I am doing this using the following code --
    IWindow* docWindow = Utils<IWindowUtils>()->GetFrontDocWindow( docRef.GetDataBase() );
    //Schedule the command to show the layout window of original document in CS3
    InterfacePtr<ICommand> showHideCmd (CmdUtils::CreateCommand( kShowHideWinCmdBoss ));
    InterfacePtr<ICloseWinCmdData > closeWinCmdData (showHideCmd, IID_ICLOSEWINCMDDATA);
    closeWinCmdData->Set( docWindow );
    InterfacePtr<IIntData> iIntData (showHideCmd, IID_IINTDATA);
    iIntData->Set( IWindow::kShow );
    CmdUtils::ScheduleCommand( showHideCmd );
    docWindow->BringToFront();
    In cs4, there is an API kShowHidePresentaitonCmd
    Code that i wrote for CS4 --
    //Schedule the command to show the layout window of original document in CS4IDocumentPresentation* docWindow = Utils<IDocumentUIUtils>()->GetFrontmostPresentationForDocument( docRef.GetDataBase() );
    InterfacePtr<ICommand> showHideCmd (CmdUtils::CreateCommand( kShowHidePresentationCmdBoss ));
    InterfacePtr<IPresentationCmdData> presentationCmdData (showHideCmd, IID_IPRESENTATIONCMDDATA);
    presentationCmdData->Set( docWindow );
    InterfacePtr<IIntData> iIntData (showHideCmd, IID_IINTDATA);
    iIntData->Set( 0 );                                       // What is the parameter that should be passed in the set function. 0 is not working
    ErrorCode result = CmdUtils::ProcessCommand( showHideCmd );
    Hide/show document in cs4 is not working

    ErrorCode ShowHideDocument(IDocumentPresentation*docWindow, int32 nShowHide)
    ErrorCode result = kFailure;
    do
      InterfacePtr<IControlView> controlView (docWindow, UseDefaultIID());
      if(controlView == nil)
         break;
      if(nShowHide == 0)
       controlView->Hide();
      else
       controlView->Show();
      result = kSuccess;
    }while( kFalse );
    return result;
    May be helpful!!

  • Is there a "hide" feature in Indesign CS4?

    Is there a "hide" feature in Indesign CS4?

    What Bob said, and use those those layers, too. That's why they put them there.

  • How to get notified when InDesign Application hides (Mac)

    Hi!
    I need to modify the behavior of a secondary process  I launch in my plugin when the InDesign app hides (from the dock or using the cmd+h key combination).
    I was trying to add an observer and callback using the Notification Center (local) though I can't find a way to get the main or key window to do so.
    Anyone has any pointers as how I can do this?
    Thanks!

    As Dirk rightly pointed out, you need to place an observer in the kAppBoss and observe on the IID_IAPPLICATION protocol.
    What you should do is just place an interface as an addin in the kAppBoss and give it an implementation (you don't need to create a observer boss class as you have done).
    In startup call the autoattach of your observer, for ex
      InterfacePtr<IApplication> app(gSession->QueryApplication());
      InterfacePtr<IObserver> iMyObserver(app, IID_IMYOBSERVER);
                        iMyObserver->AutoAttach();
    In the autoattach method of your implementation class, remember to pass your observers interface ID to the attachobsever method of the ISubject
    for ex
    AttachObserver(this, IID_IAPPLICATION, IID_IMYPOBSERVER);
    Then in the update method you will get properly notified of the suspend and resume of application
    This should fix your problem.

  • Can't 'hide' InDesign anymore

    What is up with that??
    I have to minimize (which leaves many icons on my already crowded dock which are hard to see) in order to get to a clean finder.
    Why is this happening? And can it be fixed?
    And just to complain, why on earth did Adobe change the key command (again) between hide the program and hide element outlines?
    grrrr,
    thanks,
    m

    Melissa,
    I've been searching for a solution to this problem as well. I'm on a dual 2.66MHz Mac Pro w/Leopard 10.5.2. If anything, the problem seems to have gotten worse since the 10.5.2 update.
    The only solution I've found is to use the Spaces feature introduced in Leopard. Think of a space as a unique desktop for each program you use. You can activate and configure this from the System Prefs. I'd recommend reading up on how to use it before you start setting it up.
    Some caveats to Spaces are: it doesn't work well with CS2 applications. You can assign specific applications to a particular space but (at least for me) Leopard doesn't care what space you assign a CS2 app. It will open it in whatever space you happen to be. It will also open the CS2 program in one space and then open your docs. in an entirely different space. The other issue I've run into is that sometimes when you switch out of your ID CS3 space, the program won't come back to the forefront and you have to force-quit InDesign. This happens to me without spaces so I figure 6-of-1...

  • InDesign 5.0.2 on Leopard doesn't hide and crashes on File Dialogues

    What is wrong with Adobe?!!! Do they not realize that their software is garbage and that InDesign is a pile of crap on Leopard...crashing every time I try to save a file, or place an image.
    Does it not know that some times Apple-H hides the application, and other times it does not.
    Or am I the only one that has these really annoying problems. On a PowerMac G5 Dual 2.7.
    Please fix this mess.

    > Seriously though, what ever happened to customer service, where it didn't matter who was at fault, or how big the problem was...the vendor would do anything to make things right. ... Sigh...you just don't get it.
    No spungraphics,
    b you
    don't get it.
    You don't get that one of the top development engineers and print evangelists at Adobe has taken the time out to personally address your concerns
    b twice
    in this thread.
    He has done so in a highly professional manner. As an Adobe employee he has kept his personal feelings out of the debate.
    He has not used pejorative terms like "whinning". Rather, he has stated that Apple acknowleges the bug.
    You have given vague comments that somehow you "know" that it would not be a big deal for Adobe to "fix it."
    It is true that my comments are harsh. (And no, I don't work for Adobe. I wouldn't last a week.) But your comments are a waste of the bandwidth on this
    b user to user forum.
    This is a forum where non-Adobe people help other non-Adobe people solve problems.
    I have posted hundreds of replies in the InDesign forum that solve problems or suggest solutions or educate people as to how to work with InDesign. Some of these postings have involved videos that were posted in other places. Others were scripts that solved problems. Still others were simple text statements.
    You sir have posted
    b nothing.
    The only postings on record for you are the complaints you have in this single thread.
    In addition, I have gone to your web site and you are hardly a software developer.
    You are a (very) young man who has worked in creating multimedia presentations and web sites.
    There is nothing on your resume that indicates you have actually engineered any software. Web sites and presentations are not software development.
    Meanwhile, since I see that you are based in Toronto, I offer the following challenge to you:
    I will be at the InDesign and Creative Suite conferences next week in Toronto at the Metro Toronto Convention Center.
    There will be a "Game Show" contest on Tuesday night starting at 5 PM. Even if you are not registered at the conference, I will get you in as a contestant in the game.
    You can then pit your InDesign skills against me as the game developer and the other attendees at the show.
    Let's see just how well you say you know InDesign.

  • [Command + H]  Hides Indesign, this is a joke, right?

    Universally (in the most common and two most popular) Adobe apps, [Command + H] hides logical stuff that we want to scrub away to see our image.
    Did someone at InDesign design time think... "hey, what's the best prank we can play on Photoshop and Illustrator users?"
    Well done.
    Prank played.

    Not by me. I'm abusing it liberally to get "Live Previews" on the iPad.

    But it's just as useful with a Retina Macbook as you get to test right to the edge, how a layout looks, on the device.
    It ALMOST makes putting up with Illustrator's foibles tolerable.
    Adobe, please, please, please, increase the thread priority and threading of Illustrator.  I don't mind if every other program becomes inoperable, I just want game like responsiveness when moving graphics around.
    If games can do it, dynamically, live, in 3D, using the full 2880x1800, with dynamic UI's over the top, and polyphonic, 5.1 surround sound, why can't Illustrator push a few 2D pixels around fluidly?
    This also applies to InDesign.
