InDesign ignoring open fonts

We're using InDesign CS2. Occasionally, InDesign will ignore a font that Suitcase says is open normally. Usually, we restart the computer and everything is fine.
On more than one occasion, this restart process has not worked. Neither has clearing the font cache. The only solution to these has been to work on the job on a different computer.
In all of these cases, we have worked on this file with InDesign using this font on the same system successfully before. Often, on the same day! It will work in the morning, we'll work on something else, and it won't work in the afternoon.
Also, often these "ignored" fonts are part of font families, so the bold and the italic might work fine, but the roman is ignored.
Has anyone else encounter this? If so, any solutions?

For the last few years, I've seen the same thing. Suitcase and InDesign work fine for part of the day, then in the afternoon Suitcase begins to balk at working properly. I always restart Suitcase and that cures the problem.

  • InDesign CC freezes when opening fonts

I am running Windows 7 64 bit and have updated to InDesign Version 9.2.
InDesign is often slow to save documents, and sometimes freezes or crashes. Recently when it froze a box popped up that said it was opening fonts. Any thoughts as to what would cause it to freeze while opening fonts.
    The problem is intermittent.
Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

    Hi Pam,
    I would certainly give CC2014 a try.
Other than that, make sure there’s no illegal characters like slashes in the file or folder names and that the path is not too long.

  • Can't open Ill-file, able to place it in InDesign and open it in Php?

When opening yhe file a pop-up appears wtith the message:
(Sorry i translated it from dutch)
Your recent colorsetting ignores CMYK-profiles with the content, but with this document is made with profiles that has to be supported?
What did i do wrong, or what's wrong?

I don't know if you have done something wrong.
You have to place the file in InDesign, not open.
If your file has only color space without profile it will be shown with the host document settings and when exported it will never be converted to a different CMYK profile, if you convert the file upon PDF export to a RGB file it is supposed that this file has the default settings for that INDD.
If you have no profile included into a CMYK AI file (I hope you are using AI and NOT EPS!!!) you can avoid accidently CMYK to CMYK conversion which can cause 4c black and odd CMYK values numbers.

  • Moving Pagemaker to Indesign for Devnagri Fonts

    Hi,
I want to move from pagemaker to Indesign CS6, but i am having issues with opening pagemaker files indesign for devnagri fonts
    1. Able to open the pagemaker file but its not detecting font, its displaying garbage
    2. I could have used the find font and replace with required one but unfortunately the file contains more than one font, we use different font for Main heading, subheading, body etc
    3. I have lot of the older files to move up and not the just one file, each file contains lot of pages
I am attaching a sample pagemaker file and fonts which will help you to diagnose the issue

@Peter – and there seems to be another problem with the provided TT fonts: They cannot be embedded in PDFs. The permission in the font is set to "Not embedable with PDF".
Tried the conversion process on Mac OSX 10.6.8 with InDesign CS5.5 and CS6.
Same problems found. Some glyphs are not showing up, even if I assign the provided fonts to the converted text.
Since the provided glyph set is not compatible with OTF encoding we could only do a large GREP Search/Replace action for every single gylph if we want to use something like an OTF Devanagari font. Simply assigning an OTF font is useless.
You can compare single glyphs and their codepoints in the provided TTF with the Unicode code points needed:
    http://www.unicode.org/charts/PDF/U0900.pdf
And as you can see here the TTF font is using the wrong code point in regards to Unicode (example: 0928 न DEVANAGARI LETTER NA)

  • INDD CS6 error: "InDesign cannot open files in the "InDesign CS5.5 Document" format.

Working in CS6 on Mac OS X 10.7.5: When I double click an INDD file in the Finder, I get the following error from InDesign:
"The document "doc name" could not be opened. InDesign cannot open files in the "InDesign CS5.5 Document" format."
This just started recently and I have not been able to figure out why. I have not updated INDD or OS X. I can't think of anything else that changed, other than maybe a Java update. Have not updated to the latest OS yet.
The files I'm trying to open are files I created with CS6 - as recent as a few minutes ago.  I can open them fine using the File>Open command in InDesign so I can open them, but I can't open them by double clicking them in Finder or dragging them to the INDD icon in the dock.
The info in Finder's "Get Info" window says they are CS6 files set to open in CS6 and I have permissions to read and write. They are not locked.
This is not incapacitating, but rather annoying and slows me down since this is one of the most common ways I open files.
    Any suggestsion would be appreciated.

Probably won't work because it sounds like an OS problem of some sort, but you can try trashing the prefs. See Replace Your Preferences

  • CS5 InDesign cannot open files in the InDesign CS5 document format

I'll be working in InDesign CS5 with no problems then at some point I'll double click on an InDesign file and a window comes up and says - InDesign cannot open files in the InDesign CS5 document format. Sometimes when this happens I have to completely reboot my whole system before I can get InDesign to function correctly. Is this a flaw with CS5? Did not happen with previous versions. It doesn't always happen but I can't figure out what causes it. Would appreciate anyones help. I'm getting to really HATE InDesign!!

I have not uninstalled and reinstalled, but I did just switch over to another workstation using Time Machine. The previous system was Leopard. This one is running Snow Leopard.
I'm not sure how to parse this. When you say "switch over to another workstaiton using Time Machine" do you mean, "started using another machine that happens to be using Time Machine for backups and is also running 10.6 instead of 10.5"?
Or do you mean, "Used the Time Machine program to upgrade from 10.5 to 10.6?" If you mean the second one, well, I can't say I am surprised that things are messed up. And that would make your problem rather different than the other posters, which is good reason for you to have started your own thread (and thus your own solution)....
I'm a little bit leary of getting in and changing things in Terminal, without understanding what I am changing. Plus this is a workstation at work, so if I screw something up, that is not a good things, and I don't have time to spend a day fixing things back up again, with the way our workload is.
Well, you can find a lot of marginal documentation about lsregister and Launch Services, but I wonder whether your understood the ramifications of messing with Time Machine (or maybe I have misinterpretted you!). I'd be surprised if you found another way to fix this, other than uninstall/reinstall.
    Good luck.

  • How do I get InDesign to open on the second monitor of a two-monitor system?

My computer is connected to two identical monitors. I use them in extended mode. Monitor 1 includes my WIndows desktop; Monitor 2 does not
I want to open my InDesign files on "Monitor 2" which does NOT have impediments like a taskbar that wants to pop up.
By default, InDesign CS6 opens on Monitor 1, the one with the desktop. How do I change that setting?

Exactly what Bob Levine said. Can confirm, running a two monitor display here.

  • Why can't I preview indd files within InDesign's open file dialog box?

    Hello all,
It is bad enough that Adobe doesn't add a plugin to preview any Adobe source file within Windows Explorer (well, except for PDF but I think Microsoft did that).
But I find it ridiculous that I cannot preview .indd source files inside InDesign's Open File dialog box. It just states, "No preview available". I am sure this failure is tied into what Windows can preview... still, not a good excuse!
This is also the same problem in both Illustrator and Photoshop.... neither Adobe program can preview their own file format!
WHY?  OR How can I correct this?
[UPDATE: SageThumbs | SourceForge.net seems to partially work on many Photoshop files (works reasonably well as long as I limit the file size to 70mb), it doesn't seem to work on Illustrator files (despite the claim), and it doesn't work on InDesign.]
Still, the question remains, why isn't Adobe taking responsibility for this?

    I think you all misunderstood.
I am referring to opening files *within* the Adobe software. Example: Inside InDesign, I click File > Open... I see a list of my .indd files and to the right is a window with the words, "Select a file to preview."  If I select an .indd file, I think it is reasonable to assume that I will see a preview of the .indd file... but NO, I just see the message, "No preview available."
In my opinion, this is a failing of Adobe!
    > Use bridge
Why would I want to open a separate program just to see thumbnails? Sure Bridge has its uses when I want to look at a lot of different images but I am only talking about quickly seeing a thumbnail before I open a single file within either InDesign, Photoshop, or Illustrator.
    Q. If Bridge can render thumbnails, why on Earth would Adobe not place the preview code into the open file dialog of each program?

  • App switching on Mac with more than one InDesign window open

I wonder if this happens to everyone or if it's something with my set-up--to be precise, having Spaces active.
In OS 10.6.8, if I have more than one InDesign document open and I switch to another application using command-tab, when I switch back to InDesign I (often) see the content of the inactive document, even though the name tab of the original, active document is highlighted.
The only way to get back to work is to click the title tab of the (supposedly) active document, or use the command-tilde shortcut, or reselect the active document name from the Window menu.
This drives me crazy as I need to check a lot of things via a browser as I'm editing. It forces me to make sure I don't have 2 ID windows open.
I'm pretty sure the same kind of thing happens in Word.

I thought I'd follow my last post up with an update. I recently upgraded to InDesign CS6 and was hoping that the problem would be solved. Unfortunately, that isn't the case. However, I did find a fix that is working for me. I noticed that when I turned the Application Frame on (found under the Windows menu) that the problem went away. I'm getting used to working this way now. I have 16 Spaces which I routinely bounce around between. And now, every time I go to InDesign it works properly!

  • Can InDesign CS3 open Corel Draw files?

    Hi,
We have Corel Draw files that need to be converted to InDesign CS3. Can you advise if InDesign can open them?
    Thank you
    Barb

No. Indesign can Place EPS or PDF files saved from CorelDraw.
Illustrator can open CorelDraw files. You could then copy and paste from
Illustrator, although if it were me I think I would want to keep my
    drawings in Illustrator, not Indesign.

  • Fontexplorer X Pro 4 opens fonts even when just clicking on file in finder?

I need to find out how to make it open fonts ONLY when I OPEN a file. Right now it opens them even when I just click on a file in the finder.
Does anyone know how to change that? The people at Fontexplorer take 4-6 WEEKS to get back to me on anything. I've given up asking there.

    Peter,
You said that you - removed the Contextual Menu Items folder from Macintosh HD/Library/ Items folderThis implies to me that you no longer have any Contextual Menu Items folder in that location. I would recommend that you create and name an empty folder "Contextual Menu Items" and put it back in the location where you removed the previous folder.
Have you recently installed an application that has a contextual menu item? If so, as I said in my previos post, you may want to uninstall/reinstall that application.
Since I did not notice that you were new to Apple Discussions when I first posted, allow me to be the second one to give you a warm welcome.

  • Why does InDesign always open multiple files in reverse number order?

Whenever I select multiple InDesign files to open, despite being named accordingly Page_01, Page_02, Page_03, etc. InDesign always opens them in reverse order tabs. If I open 10 spreads at once instead of staring at page 1 I'm looking at the back.
Is there any way to fix this? It's driving me mad. I cannot think of why it would be doing this.

Create a book (File -> New -> Book...) and add your files to it. Rearrange the files to the order you want. Then select the needed files and double-click to open them. The tabs will be populated respecting the order the files appear in the book.
Important: BEFORE adding the files to the newly-created book, go to the book panel menu, choose "Book Page Numbering Options..." and deactivate "Automatically Update Page & Section Numbers", to avoid unwanted renumbering of your pages.

  • Do open fonts work in Word for users without the font on their machine?

Our team creates documents in Word and we would like to use an Open Font (Adobe Jenson Pro)--there is quite a bit of internal file-sharing and I don't want the font to switch to something ugly when it is reviewed in Word (because Word users do not have this font installed by default). I know that there is some cross-compatibility. We would like to apply this font to the template and don't want to introduce a font issue. anyone with experience know how if this works with the Open Font in word documents for users without it installed?
    thanks!!

The coffee hasn't kicked in yet.
Open TYPE fonts are Adobe fonts
Nope. OTF's are made by many different companies. Adobe DOES have many of them yes but they don't rule the market on them.

  • Font error when trying to run dot: "Could not find/open font : Times-Roman"

I installed the graphviz package from fink. I then tried to build a simple graph using a command from the Graphviz website and I got the following error:
    $ echo "digraph G {Hello->World}" | dot -Tpng >hello.png
    Error: Could not find/open font : Times-Roman
I don't know much about how graphviz and UNIX fonts are configured, so I don't know how to go about debugging this. The only suggestion Googling turned up was to run fc-cache. I did this, but it didn't change the problem.
Anyone else hit this? Any suggestions for how to get dot working on my machine?
    Message was edited by: billmcn

A bit more Googling turns up a workaround.
    $ echo "digraph G {Hello->World}" | dot -Tpng -Nfontname="/System/Library/Fonts/Times.dfont" >hello.png
I'm still not sure how to fix the problem.
