InDesign -- Illustrator, For a Web Design Workflow

I know we can't be the only team that has grappled with this problem, so here goes:
I work for a company with a graphic design department and a web development team; I am part of the latter. Our graphics team works on Macs using InDesign CS5.5 and their designs come to us in PDF 1.5 (Acrobat 6). The development team uses CS5.5 on Windows. The designers primarily output for print (we do a lot of direct mail), so just about everything is geared for that; they also develop our web layouts, which is how we come to our problem...
When we open graphics' PDF in Illustrator, to isolate say, a background, all the text has exploded into 100+ layers making it difficult to track down all the assets we need for the website. One line of text with a stroke around the letters and a drop-shadow behind all that might look like this:
Layer 1
<Group>
T
S
E
B
HE
T                         (THE BEST, displays on one line)
<group>
<clipping path>
<path>                       (stroke)
<compound path>     (stroke again, not sure why this one is different)
..... (more below)
..... (and eventually...)
<group>                              (drop-shadow group)
See how unruly the layers are?
Is this an InDesign issue, say, how they've set up the file? Or an Illustrator problem, interpreting how it's exported? We've done a lot of web research the past couple of days; we're still scratching our heads, trying to isolate the problem, and improve the current workflow. We tried exporting EPS (level 3) and encountered the same myriad-layers problem.
I really, really hope we're not the only ones with this problem and that someone out there has seen it and beat it. Any help would sure be appreciated!

Ansel Taft

Please understand that Adobe Illustrator is not, repeat not, repeat yet again NOT a general purpose PDF file editor. Adobe Illustrator is only capable of fully editing a PDF file that was saved directly from either the same or earlier version of Adobe Illustrator and if the option was selected to retain Illustrator editability! (Likewise, Adobe Illustrator is not a general purpose PostScript or EPS file editor.)
Thus, you should expect problems when attempting to edit a PDF file exported from Adobe InDesign or for that matter, almost any other program. Why not simply open the Windows' users InDesign documents on your Macintosh in InDesign? That would eliminate all the issues you have.

  • Macbook Air 13inch for Graphic / Web Design ?

Hi guys, I decided to come here to ask for some expert help if i should buy the macbook air or pro. But before that, let me tell you what I usually do.
I use Adobe Fireworks as my primary design tool for web graphics / screen graphics, maybe use Photoshop / Illustrator for "brochure" or packaging projects in the future.
I like the fact that the 13inch air has a 1400 x 900 resolution, which is close to the resolution of my new monitor, around 1600 x 900 ( upgraded from an old aoc monitor that only displays 1024 x 768 )
I also like to surf a lot of videos, youtube etc, I dont play games that much since I already have an xbox for that. I don't do 3d or heavy video editing
In my old pc when I open like 10 browser windows, it slows down , and having a hard time when editing a project with 300 dpi on lets say a 20 x 20 inch canvas. My old pc still runs but a few times in a year, I get it repaired or I replace the memory ram or something.
This is my current computer setup which I bought last 2006 >
    Windows XP SP 2
    Pentium 4 2.66 ghz
    1.5GHZ DDR SDR1 ram
    nvidia geforce fx 5500 256mb
    40gb harddisk
    Based on what Ive mentioned.
1.) Comparing my old 2006 pc to the air, will it give me x 2 or x 3 speed on the things that I need ?
2.) Air doesn't have a LAN port, i connect my pc through LAN, but if I use wifi, will my net speed be slower ?
3.) There are rumors that there will be an air update this summer, to include the sandy bridge processors, should I wait for this ?
Thanks , hoping to hear your thoughts.

PC vs MBAir would be like comparing apples to windo.. err orange.
But regardless, there will be a very noticeable difference in speed when you upgrade your Pentium 4 to the MBA.
To put it in perspective, my MBAir 2010 seems to run faster than my Lenovo T410s core I5 CPU and both have SSDs and both have 4GB ram. Both models came out last year.
Wifi is usually slower than LAN. But I dont see any noticeable difference in speed using LAN vs wifi unless you transfer large files within your network. Your internet connection will usually be the bottleneck (when uploading/downloading files off of the internet) and is usually slower than your wifi (wireless G around 50ish Mbps vs 3Mbps DSL - with upload speeds being much slower).
I'd say if you need the upgrade, get it. If you'd rather wait, that's fine too - You'd just be stuck with your old equipment for several months waiting for the new model. (Or... you can wait until the new model is out, and buy the old model for MUCH cheaper price :D)

  • Fireworks or Illustrator for creating web components

I just want to ask members who use Muse which program they use to create Web Components.  For photos I use Photoshop CC, but I am not sure which program to use for web graphics.  I know both programs have tools for creating web graphic, and that Fireworks is more designed to create web graphic, but which one is better Fireworks or Illustrator.
I am looking to trying to create some logos and maybe icons for my webpage, and as I am new to these programs I would like so opinion from you the members on which ones your use.
I thankyou in advance for reading this post and any opinions you may have regarding this.

Ultimately I would say photoshop is your best bet. You can do the hard lines, shading and blending for this type of thing fairly easily in photoshop compared to illustrator if you know how. Most web comic artist I know who do their work in color usually use photoshop to produce exactly this type of look. For examples look at Katbox.net/laslindas or 2kinds.com

  • Is it possible to debug step by step for share point designer workflow in share point 2010

    Hi all,<o:p></o:p>
I have created a reminder date work flow but it is not working .In this work flow it need to be check first its status if its status is suspend then only workflow can run .I am
attaching below workflow logic check if any modifications needed please suggest me . And  I have doubt is it possible to check step by step debugging like in coding we are using break point in this way any break point is available for designer workflows
? If break point is available please guide me how to get and use those<o:p></o:p>
    Thanking you,<o:p></o:p>
    ArunDarly
    <o:p>Workflow logic given below</o:p>

You can't step through a SharePoint Designer Workflow.  The normal workaround is to Log messages to the History list with the values you want to look at where you would normally put breakpoints.  Then run the workflow and examine the history
list to see how the values changed as you went through your workflow.

  • Flash and SEO for Ecommerce Web Design

    Hi
I am working with a web design company in the UK and was wondering if there are any indications of when Flash could be recognised by Google?
This is a major issue as the design features are fantastic but SEO is a nightmare.
I would love to introduce it within our ecommerce web design solutions, but only when the issue is resolved.
Message was edited by host to remove links

In SEO terms, content is king.  Basically, if you have no HTML headings and text on your web pages, there's nothing much for search engines to grab onto. No content = no traffic.
Flash is invisible to SEs, translators, screen readers, iPhones/iPads, and many other web devices.   To support the widest possible audience, you might want to re-think your need for Flash and switch to HTML.  Almost anything you can do with Flash can be done reasonably well with jQuery (JavaScript) http://jquery.malsup.com/cycle/
Your other option is SWF Object Replacement along with HTML equivalents for SEs and devices that don't support Flash.

  • 2.0Ghz vs. 2.3Ghz for graphic/web designer?

I just purchased a 15" 2.0GHz Macbook Pro. I am a graphic designer and soon-to-be web designer. Will the 2.0Ghz Processor be suitable enough to run the programs I need (Adobe Creative Cloud). Could use some advice. Thanks!

    Hawk74x,
does Adobe provide guidance on minimum and recommended hardware for using Creative Cloud? Have you checked the forums at adobe.com, to see if there are recommendations there?
I’m not a graphic designer myself, but I know a graphic designer who still uses Creative Suite 2 on an old G4 — so if your MacBook Pro is a Late 2013 model with a 2.0 GHz Core i7 Crystal Well CPU, my guess is that the CPU will be eminently suitable, and that your bottleneck, if any, will be with the amount of RAM that was soldered onto your MacBook Pro.

  • Which Laptop for Photoshop + Web Design? (under 1000$)

    Hey there-
I need a PC laptop and not sure which to buy. Just getting started with photoshop and web design but hope to make it a career. Money's tight so under 1000$ (max) is ideal. Do I need a dedicated graphics card, or is integrated okay? Intel or AMD? Screen resolution? I'm confused.
Any tips are much appreciated, thanks!

Do you really need a laptop?  You can get a lot more for the money with a desktop.  Many serious users use one or more 24+ inch monitors.
Win7 is better than Win8.  The standard recommendation is a dedicated video card with 1 gig of VRAM, min. 2 internal HD or large SSD, and min. 8 gig of ram.

I can recommend the latest David Powers book "The Essential
    Guide to
Dreamweaver CS3 with CSS Ajax and PHP"
I started skimming this book and ending up going through
    cover to cover.
I've learned a few tips about using Dreamweaver better,
    especially
getting most from the way the CSS panel works and heaps about
    PHP which
has made me rethink completely my approach to forms etc. Lots
    of
titbits to fill in those gaps you mentioned. This guy is such
    a good
communicator I've now ordered his book on PHP solutions as
    it's got me
fired up to want to understand it better. I doubt I'll ever
    be
programming from scratch but at least my troubleshooting and
    customisation cabability should improve.

  • Web design workflow between Dreamweaver, Muse and Reflow?

Do these 3 programs fit together in some kind of smooth workflow or does each program represents a different workflow based on the designer vs developer involvment on a project? I guess Im just confused why adobe has 3 programs for designers to create websites in?

PLEASE ADOBE READ BELOW, and fulfill this designer wish
Edge Reflow is really amazing. It's an huge tool to create responsive webdesign. Insanely great, fun and designer oriented! I love it!
Muse is really terrific. Amazing. Another huge tool to create website for a designer! I love it too.
But the question is:  why you in Adobe waste time and smart developers to develop a single app like Edge Reflow instead integrate it natively in MUSE ????
I think Edge Reflow app is a not sense. Really!
Build responsive website in Edge Reflow is great, but you can't add animation, plugin etc.
Build a website with html 5 animation, plugin, etc. is astounding in Muse but you can't build a real responsive website: only useless and ridiculous versions for tablet, phone, to point to specific url...things of 10 years ago...).
What the sense to have the useless Muse's Tab "Desktop" "Tablet" and now "Phone" if they don't control the main website (read responsive)?  They are useless. It's like a Ferrari with the pedals instead an engine. Who use these tabs to build a website? Do we really need to build three website version and point these to http://www.myawesomesite.com/ http://phone.myawesomesite.com http://tablet.myawesomesite.com/ and drive specific version with JS.... in 2014 ??? Come on.
    My wish:
These useless Muse's tabs should be replaced with the interface pieces of Edge reflow (the stretch system to determinate the size is really amazing). They are awesome and wonderful. After complete the job by adding some Muse's panels to replicate Edge Reflow functions.
No more "app juggling", tons of time saved, the best software ever to build website. The new version name? MuseReflow. Of course. Sounds good isn't it?
Come on guys fulfill this designer wish. Maybe for Christmas?
    Please
    Thanks

  • Slices & Extract Assets, or Copy CSS & paragraph styles for retina web designs?

I'm trying to figure out how Adobe wants me to work in Photoshop when producing website designs.
Extract Assets is useful for fixed-size objects to produce 50% & 100% assets. 200% png output results in anti-aliasing even from vector shapes. Please correct me if I'm wrong but this seemed to be the case. Slicing is useful for elements on the site that may have variable height/width needing end-caps and repeat-x or repeat-y images e.g. buttons and nav-bars.
If I need to work at 2x resolution for retina, using Extract Assets and Slices, my paragraph and character styles dimensions are doubled, as are the dimensions of all my objects. This makes the Copy CSS a bit pointless - double height, width, margin, padding, shadow blur etc.
Should I be designing at 2x resolution and extracting and slicing, or at 1x and using Copy CSS, exporting paragraphing styles? Or something in-between?

Hi Ben, I ammended this line of code as you have shown and still I have no joy. So I reverted to an older version which was correct, but i am stil having the same issue.
I have a my_site folder (defined local root folder), with the index.dwt in it. In my_site there is also an assets folder with 3 further folders, CSS, JS and Images and their respective files in these.
Bregent. Thanks, I did define at set up. I went back to manage sites and checked there too and thr root file on the local is the same at set up. I just don't get why after I made changes to the carousel and and reiploaded the site I have had issues :-(
Any other places I should be looking people? This is driving me crackers!

  • Options for simple web design software

I have iWeb 08, which produces pretty much what I want, but IE8 won't display the javascript menu's.
So is there a way of getting iWeb to create pages that will view in IE8 ? or is there some equally simple software that just works ?
    Thanks.

You'll find a few more hints here.....
    http://www.iwebformusicians.com/WebMusic/iWebandInternetExplorer.html
If you want IE users to be able to watch your movies you really need to convert then to flash or upload them to a service like YouTube or, better still, Vimeo.
For music files, the only sensible way to go is to use a flash player or jukebox as most PC users can't or won't download QuickTime Player.
