Indesign is opening templates at 1/3 of their normal size.

I'm a newbie to InDesign and designing albums. This is my first try at designing an album, and I've absolutely had enough of it, grrrrr!!
I've downloaded 10x10 inch templates from an album company, and have loaded my images into them.
Problem - When I look at File/Document Setup, the sizes are wrong. The size for a 10x10 inch template (plus bleed) is showing at around 3x3 inches.
This has happened on 5 different size album templates I've opened in InDesign - all have shown the incorrect size, however when I open the album company Photoshop templates in Photoshop, their sizes are correct, so it appears to only be an InDesign problem.
I've only had InDesign for about 3 weeks, and I'm using the TRIAL version of InDesign, I've got 4 days left before I download and pay for the proper version. Surely the sizes would still work in the Trial version??
Either I have some sort of "preferences" or something that are set wrong on my computer, and showing pre-made templates to be too small, or the album company's templates are wrong.
They havent heard of this before, of problems using InDesign and their templates, so I'm worried that something is askew on my version of InDesign.
The company doesnt sound like they know much about InDesign..... (!!) so they're not sure how to help me, and I'm about to ditch them altogether and find someone else because this is downright ridiculous.
I can manually change the sizes of the templates, but thats just annoying me and I shouldn't have to do that. None of us can figure out WHY the album company InDesign templates are not the right size.
(Also when I export them as Jpegs, and open in Photoshop, they're still the incorrect size).
I've checked the InDesign/Preferences/General with regards to Scaling, but I "think" that just relates to text.... ??
Is there anything that I'm missing?
Any preferences or things that are set to change the size of templates like this?
When I design my own template, the size is set to whatever I've made, so I can't try and replicate the problem either.
Can anyone help me please?

(Beta = unreleased, perhaps not fully tested, software)
If you know what the template looks like and its various dimensions, can you not recreate it yourself?
Because I have no idea what the template is--can you post a screen shot?--I don't know what you would be faced with as regards the amount of effort. But I cannot think of a design one could not basically replicate in far less time than you have spent on getting their scripts to work.
Once you have your design parameters, shop the printing around to be able to compare costs. I know of no commercial printer (other than some self-publishing printers and low-cost high-volume printers) that require such things as they do. Much less make it so difficult to comply.
Just a thought.
Take care, Mike

  • Cannot open templates

I have just loaded PH 6.52 on to a new laptop running Windows Vista and cannot open the templates.  When I click on a screen icon for a template or go to the Open/Templates section I receive an error Cannot Open File Error 8009:-001.  Any ideas for a fix would be greatly apreciated.  Thanks.

You've installed PageMaker 6.52 on Vista? Congrats on getting it to install, but after that all bets are off.   PM6.52 must getting on for 10 years old now.
You could try changing the file extension to .P65 and see if that helps, but it's a long shot.
    From the Adobe KB:
    Q. Does Adobe PageMaker 7.x run on Windows Vista?
    A. Adobe PageMaker 7.x does not install or run on Windows Vista. Adobe announced in 2004 that it was ending development of PageMaker but would continue to sell and support the current version. It does not plan to update PageMaker to support Windows Vista.
So there's no chance with PM6.52.
If you have a PM Licence, treat yourself to a discounted copy of InDesign - it's far, far better.

  • INDD CS6 error: "InDesign cannot open files in the "InDesign CS5.5 Document" format.

Working in CS6 on Mac OS X 10.7.5: When I double click an INDD file in the Finder, I get the following error from InDesign:
"The document "doc name" could not be opened. InDesign cannot open files in the "InDesign CS5.5 Document" format."
This just started recently and I have not been able to figure out why. I have not updated INDD or OS X. I can't think of anything else that changed, other than maybe a Java update. Have not updated to the latest OS yet.
The files I'm trying to open are files I created with CS6 - as recent as a few minutes ago.  I can open them fine using the File>Open command in InDesign so I can open them, but I can't open them by double clicking them in Finder or dragging them to the INDD icon in the dock.
The info in Finder's "Get Info" window says they are CS6 files set to open in CS6 and I have permissions to read and write. They are not locked.
This is not incapacitating, but rather annoying and slows me down since this is one of the most common ways I open files.
    Any suggestsion would be appreciated.

Probably won't work because it sounds like an OS problem of some sort, but you can try trashing the prefs. See Replace Your Preferences

  • CS5 InDesign cannot open files in the InDesign CS5 document format

I'll be working in InDesign CS5 with no problems then at some point I'll double click on an InDesign file and a window comes up and says - InDesign cannot open files in the InDesign CS5 document format. Sometimes when this happens I have to completely reboot my whole system before I can get InDesign to function correctly. Is this a flaw with CS5? Did not happen with previous versions. It doesn't always happen but I can't figure out what causes it. Would appreciate anyones help. I'm getting to really HATE InDesign!!

I have not uninstalled and reinstalled, but I did just switch over to another workstation using Time Machine. The previous system was Leopard. This one is running Snow Leopard.
I'm not sure how to parse this. When you say "switch over to another workstaiton using Time Machine" do you mean, "started using another machine that happens to be using Time Machine for backups and is also running 10.6 instead of 10.5"?
Or do you mean, "Used the Time Machine program to upgrade from 10.5 to 10.6?" If you mean the second one, well, I can't say I am surprised that things are messed up. And that would make your problem rather different than the other posters, which is good reason for you to have started your own thread (and thus your own solution)....
I'm a little bit leary of getting in and changing things in Terminal, without understanding what I am changing. Plus this is a workstation at work, so if I screw something up, that is not a good things, and I don't have time to spend a day fixing things back up again, with the way our workload is.
Well, you can find a lot of marginal documentation about lsregister and Launch Services, but I wonder whether your understood the ramifications of messing with Time Machine (or maybe I have misinterpretted you!). I'd be surprised if you found another way to fix this, other than uninstall/reinstall.
    Good luck.

  • How do I get InDesign to open on the second monitor of a two-monitor system?

My computer is connected to two identical monitors. I use them in extended mode. Monitor 1 includes my WIndows desktop; Monitor 2 does not
I want to open my InDesign files on "Monitor 2" which does NOT have impediments like a taskbar that wants to pop up.
By default, InDesign CS6 opens on Monitor 1, the one with the desktop. How do I change that setting?

Exactly what Bob Levine said. Can confirm, running a two monitor display here.

  • Why can't I preview indd files within InDesign's open file dialog box?

    Hello all,
It is bad enough that Adobe doesn't add a plugin to preview any Adobe source file within Windows Explorer (well, except for PDF but I think Microsoft did that).
But I find it ridiculous that I cannot preview .indd source files inside InDesign's Open File dialog box. It just states, "No preview available". I am sure this failure is tied into what Windows can preview... still, not a good excuse!
This is also the same problem in both Illustrator and Photoshop.... neither Adobe program can preview their own file format!
WHY?  OR How can I correct this?
[UPDATE: SageThumbs | SourceForge.net seems to partially work on many Photoshop files (works reasonably well as long as I limit the file size to 70mb), it doesn't seem to work on Illustrator files (despite the claim), and it doesn't work on InDesign.]
Still, the question remains, why isn't Adobe taking responsibility for this?

    I think you all misunderstood.
I am referring to opening files *within* the Adobe software. Example: Inside InDesign, I click File > Open... I see a list of my .indd files and to the right is a window with the words, "Select a file to preview."  If I select an .indd file, I think it is reasonable to assume that I will see a preview of the .indd file... but NO, I just see the message, "No preview available."
In my opinion, this is a failing of Adobe!
    > Use bridge
Why would I want to open a separate program just to see thumbnails? Sure Bridge has its uses when I want to look at a lot of different images but I am only talking about quickly seeing a thumbnail before I open a single file within either InDesign, Photoshop, or Illustrator.
    Q. If Bridge can render thumbnails, why on Earth would Adobe not place the preview code into the open file dialog of each program?

  • App switching on Mac with more than one InDesign window open

I wonder if this happens to everyone or if it's something with my set-up--to be precise, having Spaces active.
In OS 10.6.8, if I have more than one InDesign document open and I switch to another application using command-tab, when I switch back to InDesign I (often) see the content of the inactive document, even though the name tab of the original, active document is highlighted.
The only way to get back to work is to click the title tab of the (supposedly) active document, or use the command-tilde shortcut, or reselect the active document name from the Window menu.
This drives me crazy as I need to check a lot of things via a browser as I'm editing. It forces me to make sure I don't have 2 ID windows open.
I'm pretty sure the same kind of thing happens in Word.

I thought I'd follow my last post up with an update. I recently upgraded to InDesign CS6 and was hoping that the problem would be solved. Unfortunately, that isn't the case. However, I did find a fix that is working for me. I noticed that when I turned the Application Frame on (found under the Windows menu) that the problem went away. I'm getting used to working this way now. I have 16 Spaces which I routinely bounce around between. And now, every time I go to InDesign it works properly!

  • Is it possible to add audio to a bumper / opener template?

I have a little intro video that I put on all of your videos (http://noahsdad.com/). It is a video file made in after effects, a 5 second background track audio file, and 2 swoosh audio files. I have exported that as a video and saved it to my desktop. What I typically do is drag it in to every video and than overlay the date using the text tool.  It's time consuming lining up where I want the text to come on and off screen for every single video.
I tried to make a template in motion, and it worked (and sounded) perfect in the motion timeline.  When I published it to FCPX it showed up in my generator section, but when I brought it in to my project there was no audio. (It did allow me to change the date very easily just like I wanted to.)  But the audio didn't come through.
Apple said there is no way to have sound come with a template / motion project...but that doesn't sound right. Lots of motion templates have sound with them when you buy them. Does anyone know how to do this, or a work around? Again, I have a video file that has all of the music and video wrapped into one..I just want to add it to my bumper/opener template area with a quick way to change the text overlay each time...
    Thanks.

I have the same issue. It is pretty annoying but at least the audio remains within the motion project. It just isn't accessible it seems as an FCPX template. So what I'm doing is this:
I still use the video within FCPX's generator section so that you can edit the parameters as you need to
For the audio, open the project in motion then under Share, click 'Export Audio'. Select 'CAF' format and save to your hard disk
I then import the audio file into an event I set up specifically for this purpose (per BenB's suggestion).
When I need it, I then insert the generator from the generators section and then attach the audio file below the primary story line for the audio track
It isn't pretty but it works.

  • Can InDesign CS3 open Corel Draw files?

    Hi,
We have Corel Draw files that need to be converted to InDesign CS3. Can you advise if InDesign can open them?
    Thank you
    Barb

No. Indesign can Place EPS or PDF files saved from CorelDraw.
Illustrator can open CorelDraw files. You could then copy and paste from
Illustrator, although if it were me I think I would want to keep my
    drawings in Illustrator, not Indesign.

  • Opening templates,  wrong language - need english

I am opening templates in iAuthor and am getting the wrong language.
    I need english.
Anyone have a tip of what I need to do in order to fix this?
My lion OS is set with English as default.
    thanks in advance,
    Linda

Good to know nothing broken,  but seems it could be a nice way to have template and then some tips on how to use the feature.
Some seem very easy to use and others not so.   Like 3D and views.
Just played with Views more and ignored the text,  so think I got it.
Seems to have lots of features, but many are from other products so seems like once you find out iAuthor can do the feature it is easy to implement.
I'm currently just playing around with all the features and creating test pages.
    Very cool concept.
Thanks for your reply and helping.

thanks in anticipaition of early response.

    Hi erlative,
Thanks for your message, i just made sure that i have all the pll's only in the forms_60 path and it worked, somehow when i copied all the $AU_TOP/resource apart from APPDAYPK.pll and APPCORE, APPCORE2.pll, it didnt copy all the files, so when i copied all addittional files it worked.
    thanks for your solution.

  • Why does InDesign always open multiple files in reverse number order?

Whenever I select multiple InDesign files to open, despite being named accordingly Page_01, Page_02, Page_03, etc. InDesign always opens them in reverse order tabs. If I open 10 spreads at once instead of staring at page 1 I'm looking at the back.
Is there any way to fix this? It's driving me mad. I cannot think of why it would be doing this.

Create a book (File -> New -> Book...) and add your files to it. Rearrange the files to the order you want. Then select the needed files and double-click to open them. The tabs will be populated respecting the order the files appear in the book.
Important: BEFORE adding the files to the newly-created book, go to the book panel menu, choose "Book Page Numbering Options..." and deactivate "Automatically Update Page & Section Numbers", to avoid unwanted renumbering of your pages.

  • If I'm copying text and/or vector elements from Indesign to Photoshop how come their pixel sizes change even though I opened the same sized document and my indesign file is a web file?

If I'm copying text and/or vector elements from Indesign to Photoshop how come their pixel sizes change even though I opened the same sized document and my indesign file is a web file?

    >my indesign file is a web file
    Pardon?
Or do you mean that, when you created a new document, you choose Web as intent maybe?

  • Can't open Ill-file, able to place it in InDesign and open it in Php?

When opening yhe file a pop-up appears wtith the message:
(Sorry i translated it from dutch)
Your recent colorsetting ignores CMYK-profiles with the content, but with this document is made with profiles that has to be supported?
What did i do wrong, or what's wrong?

I don't know if you have done something wrong.
You have to place the file in InDesign, not open.
If your file has only color space without profile it will be shown with the host document settings and when exported it will never be converted to a different CMYK profile, if you convert the file upon PDF export to a RGB file it is supposed that this file has the default settings for that INDD.
If you have no profile included into a CMYK AI file (I hope you are using AI and NOT EPS!!!) you can avoid accidently CMYK to CMYK conversion which can cause 4c black and odd CMYK values numbers.
