Indesign is pretty slow ..

Hi,
I'm Abhijeet. I am using a MacBook Pro 2.2Ghz i7 late 2011 build 4GB RAM 500GB HDD..running Indesign 5.5 on Mac OSX LION 10.7.4.
My problem is that my indesign is pretty slow ... i am working on a book of around 400 pages which is big...but when i check on activity monitor it shows only around 500MB of RAM is being used by Indesign when i have the project opened...usually i have around 1.5GB RAM free...but still my INdesign is pretty slow...any idea??

Do you have a lot of cross references?
Things that can be done to speed up ID:
Set Live Screen Drawing (in the prefs) to Never or Delayed, turn off Live Preflight, turn off page thumbnails in the Pages panel, open all involved if you use inter-document cross-references.
Make sure you are patched to version 7.5.3, and do a Save As to clear out old change information.

  • Help... InDesign is extremely slow and jumps in front of other programs

I actually have 2 issues with InDesign CS3.
1st, when I open up older files, let's say InDesign CS2, or even some files that may have images in it that I cut and pasted from an older file, my InDesign is extremely slow.  And I do have just typical display showing... it's like everything I try and do, I have to wait 10 sec for the mac wheel to spin before I can do anything.  Even if it's just clicking to select an item.  Today I opened a CS3 file I did 3 months ago, saved it under a different name, and now I am having this problem.
2nd, when I go to another application, like acrobat to review a pdf, or mail, or any of them really, as soon as I am in the other program, InDesign jumps right back in front and becomes the active program... does anyone know why this is happening?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Kristie

I'd suggest you deep clean your InDesign files  that are causing issues - http://indesignsecrets.com/indesign-interchange-format-inx.php
And try these other common methods for fixing InDesign when it goes bad

Also make sure your InDesign CS2 up to the latest patch and save your file there first.
And make sure you're CS3 is up the latest patch too.
You can find those under Help>Update.

  • Help! My CS6 InDesign is very slow!

I need to know why my CS6 InDesign is very slow! I have tuend off my preflight but nothing seems to change?

    First, what is "very slow"?
Second, what are the system specifications?

  • CS6 indesign & illustrator very slow in processing

since i installed CS6, both illustrator and indesign work extremely slow when moving objects, fonts etc.
the documents are not big, just one spread full of text and the programm takes too long to process the action.
working in CS5.5 was always fine but CS6 is just so slow that work has become difficult.
i didn't change anything in fontexplorer nor did i change anything with my RAM.
and idea what i can do to make CS6 work better and more efficient?
    thanks!

    1) My brand new laptop with factory installed windows 7 and all programs by Toshiba nothing added shows 100% processor usage in task Manager and works pretty slowly. The sum of 80 odd processes shown in task manager never reaches more than 30-50 % but bottom line is always 100%.

My opinion it's problem with hardware with AMD Processor E-240 APU with AMD Radeon HD 6310 Graphics problem technique from Factory or where is the problem?

    Hi
It is not easy to discuss about this theme although you can find numerous threads about similar issues. I would like to have your notebook in front of me, optimize preinstalled OS on my way and check how it works.
In my opinion, best option is usage of original preinstalled OS with specific modification and optimization. Why? Recovery image contains all necessary drivers so hardware will run with full performance. Anything else is individual OS configuration. To be clear, recovery image contains much useless stuff that you can remove from the system; you should also modify start-up option and disable from start all stuff you dont need.
RAM upgrade was very good decision, I just hope you have bought high quality module for upgrade.
When you test video performance try to use high performance power plan.

  • Muse is pretty slow

I use the best equipped and latest 27" imac
    but muse is pretty slow.
edit: and in the last 1 hour i had like 5 or 6 zoom-crashes. :-(

Performance is highly dependent on the specific .muse file you.re working on. Its size, complexity and specific content. With a bit more detail about the .muse file you're working on (and/or a link to the URL for the site) we can probably provide some tips for improving performance.
If you have a large image on the page that's cropped on one or more sides, there's a bug within AIR that can result in crashes when zooming in/out. We've made some major changes as part of the upcoming release to address this. Until then you can avoid this crash by pre-sizing and cropped large image that are brought into Muse via File > Place or imported into slideshows outside of Muse. If the image is being used as a Fill image or is not cropped, this bug/crash should not be encountered.
Sorry for the inconvenience. If you'd like to work with the upcoming release, active subscribers who can accept the terms of the Non-disclosure Agreement are invited to join the Adobe Muse Private Beta Program by going to http://museprerelease.com

  • InDesign CS4 running slow

InDesign CS 4 (version 6.0.6) runs intermittently slow. It will often hang up for a few seconds during pretty much any operation (typing, scrolling, zooming, selecting -- type or objects, etc.). Restarting InDesign and the computer has no effect. Any ideas?
It's running on an iMac, Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz, OSX 10.6.8.

Pretty much all files, as far as I know. This is a computer at an office I work at. My own version of ID CS4 at home doesn't have this problem. Since posting, I saw a number of other postings about similar problems. I have yet to do any of general maintenance, such as repairing permissions or running disk 1st aid. Is that a first step? Is there some kind of cache in ID that can be cleared?

  • InDesign CS5 Ridiculously Slow

Hey everyone, I know this issue has been reported multiple times, but I'm bumping it by giving it a new thread. At work we just installed CS5, and InDesign is still horribly slow - almost to the point that it is humorous (not really). Anyhow, I've turned off/disabled the live redraw, disabled spell check, live preflighting, and pretty much EVERYTHING I could think of that might slow it down. CS3 runs smooth as silk, even when editing the same document. Has anyone found a fix? Does anyone know if there will be a fix from Adobe?
I understand you have to have a decently fast system, and ours are brand-new iMacs. They are 2.8Ghz Quad-Cores, with 4GB of RAM, and the best video card. That should be more than enough power. And, having the same document run fine on CS3 makes me really think it's just a CS5 issue.
Any help would be greatly appreciated...it's not fun having some expensive software on my computer that I can't even use. I've tried everything!

Hi, Windytech! We had a similar problem with our CS5 install. We did two specific things that immediately sped up INDD. Hopefully one or both of these will help you out.
First, in the PREFERENCES panel, go to INTERFACE and set Live Screen Drawing to DELAYED.
While still in the PREFERENCES panel, go to DISPLAY PERFORMANCE and set Default View to TYPICAL or FAST.
Second, go to WINDOW > OUTPUT > PREFLIGHT to open the PREFLIGHT panel. Click the triangle in the top right corner of the panel and uncheck ENABLE PREFLIGHT FOR ALL DOCUMENTS.
    These sped up InDesign considerably.

  • InDesign CS5 lag slow on Snow Leopard 10.6

I am reaching the end of patience with this one and starting to wish i'd not paid for a CS5 upgrade.
I installed under Mac OS 10.5 originally, did all updates and had font and other deathly slow issues in Photoshop.
In the end, I enacted a TOTAL system maintenance routine and upgraded to System 10.6 in order to try and get round probs with CS5.
I since have ditched all prefs, reset all caches, cleared all logs, done total font checks and removed a couple of corrupt ones, repaired disk permissions etc etc etc....  Photoshop 'appears' to work ok, although saving and saving to web can be sluggish (pizza wheel waiting for it....)
InDesign CS5 is now taxing my productivity. I thought it was my Wacom Intuous 3 tablet, but find the issue (at the mo as I've not noticed anything significant yet in Illustrator or Photoshop) only occurs with InDesign CS5.
The issue is the glitchy interface - stepped or delayed movements of objects across the page, selecting menu dialogue boxes can take a second when i click on a value, slightly steppy movements make selecting the tiny up and down arrows on some menus very tricky to be accurate.  PLUS saving and saving PDFs in particular as well as PLACE images CMD-D can be deathly slow.  It used to be almost instaneous, slowed only by the hard drive firing up. Now i try to do things and have to wait on many actions. It's doing my head in!  This is NOT PRODUCTIVE.
In InDesign i have tried turning off Live Redraw, dropping display quality to fast (makes working almost impossible as i need to see what i'm doing), and disabled the Preflight option that is on by default, and i'm sure other options too i've seen on forums.  But no better.
I have a Quad Core 3Ghz Intel Mac with 14Gb RAM, and an NIVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT graphics card.
IS this APPLE or ADOBE issue?  How on earth can i get my speedy productivity back so i can move around the screen smoothly, save and place quickly, and select menu dialogues without waiting for it to react..... HELP!

thanks for the heads-up Peter.  Id not have thought to deactivate Adobe stuff first.
I've ordered a new WD Caviar Black (larger cache than i have on current drive) so a slight upgrade of drive, and as you say, a preserved backup.  I dont have any spare bays in my Mac as i've filled them with other drives used for backups and other stuff, so i may need to buy an external case for the SATA i'm taking out.  No matter, it will be sorted this weekend.
thanks all for help. fingers crossed this rather drastic step works!
Glad I thought of it. However, if you're keeping the drive, and don't have other installations, you can keep the backup drive installations active if you'll have a use for them if you boot from that drive. With your slow performance issues, you'll probably not want to use InDesign on that drive, but perhaps you'd want to use some other rarely-used apps from that drive. Yes, space, the final frontier.
OWC has USB drive adapters that work with many types of drives, including SATA, for about $30. They're open gizmos - no enclosure, no power supply, no fan, etc. They also have notebook-sized (2.5") drives up to 1TB  with USB portable enclosures under $200, less for smaller.
Consider an extra empty drive for use with Time Machine, as an ongoing automatic backup. It's very comforting. An alternative or supplement is yet another drive that you use with Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper, inexpensive shareware, that make complete and/or incremental backups, on demand or on schedule. I use Time Machine to back up a Time Capsule drive - wired or wirelessly - and CarbonCopy Cloner to back up to a portable USB drive that's Velcro'd onto the top case of my MacBook Pro.
Oh, and for suspenders to go with my two belts, or maybe that's a belt to go with my two suspenders, I also use Carbonite online backup - wirelessly or wired, about $5/month for unlimited storage. Their gotcha is that data is kept while it's on your drive, and then they delete it from your storage 30 days after you delete it from your drive. I had tried other online storage - Mozy, and some others, but at that time, about a year ago, they didn't work reliably. Probably better now. Not sure if they keep data after you delete it from your drive, or for how long after you delete it. I think also that some online storers define "unlimited" differently.

My pc has 8 gb ram, 2.5 Ghz and around 40 GB free HD space.
I think it might be my cross references, but I don't know how to fix it..
I don't want it to be removed out of the table (because i need my references sorted on alhabatical order).
    Hope you guys can help
    Thanks,
    Daan

@Daan – I do not much with cross references, but several users here and in other forums report performance issues when working with cross references.
There is a 3rd party solution by DTP Tools:

You could test a trial version.

  • Why is InDesign CC significantly SLOWER than CS6?

InDesign CC is noticeably SLOWER in almost every aspect and functionality than is the latest version of InDesign CS6 on my computer (OSX 10.9.4, 2.66 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, 27 inch iMac). I have stopped using Indesign CC and now only use CS6 to create and adjust documents.
Can any staff or special users in this forum detail ADOBE's understanding or response to complaints of this nature?
This situation does not bode well for me, given the coerced direction Adobe is taking users of its creative suite (towards cloud based subscription systems).

I rebuilt all my preferences and that led to some kind of discovery. Starting InDesign CC everthing works ok (though the drawing tools are slightly slower than in CS6, creating a new page for example is much faster). All the following things mainly have an impact on drawing tools (pen tool, rectangle tool etc. placing multiple images is also affected but maybe because an image frame has to be drawn). After activating the application frame things start to slow down a bit. If I open the collapsed panels on right side things get slowed down again and the biggest hit on performance is evident when the information panel is open.
I wanted to record a screen-capture again but this is so slow that it does not represent the bug accurately. And I guess this has something to do with the user interface because all is linked to interface actions (application frame, opening/collapsing panels, showing the information panel)
Once again my system specs (when experiencing the issues half of my RAM was still free with Safari, Mail and InDesign CS6 and CC open for comparison):
    InDesign CC (German)
    Mac OS 10.8.4
    MacBook Pro 17inch
    8 GB RAM
    2.66 GHz Intel Core i7
500 GB HD (200 GB free)

  • InDesign CS4 very slow on a Mac

    Hello!
I'm using ID CS4 on an iMac with 2,4 GHz Core 2 Duo, 4 GB RAM. I'm writing my thesis in InDesign, so I have basically one big textframe per chapter in which all the text goes. My problem is, that InDesign is getting really slow when I type text, also in the story editor. There is a delay of around 3 seconds between typing and the appearance of the word in the document. During this delay, the CPU usage raises to almost 100 percent. I circumvent this problem by writing in a plain text editor and C&P it into InDesign, but since I have to make corrections here and there, it really drives me nuts.
Are there any means of speeding this up?
    Thank You very much!

    Peter:
I have tried and tried to post on the forums again. Signed in with 2 different names (don't ask!) and still can't get a new topic button. Here is my issue:
I have a large scale file (several) that I'm working with. It is 60" x 210". The file made in ID is fine, but I am having a hard time making a proofing PDF. Tried Distilling, directly from the app (export), and making them into eps and opening them in Acrobat to create a 4 page file. All ways cropped the files.
Do you by chance have a tip??? Please?!!
And I figured out my loading of the application problem. It was so strange and many steps:
    1. Install software
    2. If you get a "licesnse expired" notice the...
    3. Change the date on your computer to Dec. 20, 2008 (it's stated differently in the Adobe info, but the phone support stated this date).
    4. Launch the app or any of the CS apps if you've loaded more.
    5. Go to HELP> Deactivate>Erase my serial number.
    6. Close the program.
    7. Open each application.
    7. Change the date back to today's date on your computer.
    8. The products should all launch correctly!

  • InDesign CC very slow!

Since I installed InDesign CC it works very slow. It's impossible to work on a project because it needs a long time to refresh the page, load the fonts, select a text...
Instead InDesign CC works great as always.
I have a MacPro 64 GB RAM 2x512 GB SSD 2x2.4 GHz 6 core Inter Xenon... so it's unacceptable that the new release works so bad
    Has anyone a solution?

I had the same problem with Macbook pro retina
But after i updated the Indesign Cc to 7.1 its worked very smoothly and much much better
    Try then let us know
    Good luck
