InDesign Issues For A Student (CS3)

Recently my school newspaper purchased a few copies of Adobe InDesign hoping to streamline our layout process. While leaps and bounds ahead of Microsoft Publisher InDesign still has one draw back, we don't know how to use it. I've spent a lot of term learning as much as I can about the program but I still have some questions I just can't quite figure out:
Whenever I use the "place" option to drop an image into our document it always lowers the quality, making it appear pixilated and rough regardless of the original image quality. Why is this? Does it just appear that way and when we go to print it'll be better?
Also, we're a large staff with only 3 computers at school running InDesign. We like to have people work on stuff from home if possible and then contribute their page to our master copy. How can I simply add one InDesign file (page) to another? Is this possible? We've tried using the place tool but encounter the same quality issue.

It's not really necessary to add the page to the document, you can use
the book feature to combine them but there are two other possibilities.
1. If you don't need to edit the page just use file>place and place the
InDesign file of the other page. It will be linked and you can always
use the edit original command.
2. Have both files open and drag the page using the pages panel.
Finally, read the manual, read the help and buy a good book. I highly
recommend Sandee Cohen's Visual Quick Start Guide.

Serial number issue for Acrobat in CS3 Web premium education edition.

Hi everybody. If anyone can help me on this issue, I would really appreciate it. So far, customer support hasn't been very useful. So here is the issue.
I bought CS3 Web Premium for my 2.16ghz macbook and it was purchased through apple. Anyway, it came with the main disc to install all the applications of cs3 and another disc to install acrobat 9. The way an education edition works is that I don't receive an actual serial number. I receive a product number which I have to enter, along with my info and proof of eligibility on this website called myidentit-e.com When this was all said and done, I received an email that contained a serial number. This serial number worked on all of the regular cs3 applications but not on acrobat 9. There was no other product code included and the directions inside the case said that I should be able to use the same serial number for both the regular cs3 and acrobat 9. Customer service's suggestion was to call apple since I bought it from them but what would they know about that? Adobe seals the products and I'm assuming that Apple is only a reseller.
Anyways, any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

We've also had this problem. It looks like neither Adobe, My Identit-e nor Adobe will take responsibility for fixing this. All CS3 programs work except for Acrobat, which won't accept the serial number.
Support requests to adobe have resulted in our request simply being "closed" without any actual response from the company.
Has anyone had any luck with obtaining help from any of these companies? Any advice is appreciated.

Indesign issues for windows???

hi, i'm a student who just purchased CC for my windows computer. could someone please help me find the settings for indesign "units and incruments" so I can change the settings from picas to inches. I had no issues with my class's Mac computers but windows is giving me fits.

If a business is having a student employee purchase the
license to circumvent Licensing, that is a violation of the EULA.
In all honesty this is a question for Adobe if there is anything
borderline. More than likely if this individual is an employee of
the company then it would be a EULA violation. If the person is
independent of the company there may be enough shades of gray to
distort the line and I will leave it at that.

Manage multiple versions(ID CS,CS2,CS3,CS4) of INDD files Indesign proxy for PC

Dear scripters,
I have multiple version of ID installed in my system. I have ID CS,CS2,CS3 and CS4. While I am opening (double click) the ID CS file, automatically the file opening in CS4. For solving this problem I have searched in the forums I found there is a program called INDESIGN PROXY for MAC OSX. It manages the problems well.
Now I am in the process of developing the application same like that for windows using VB. Here is my observation about Indesign proxy.
1. While user double clicks the Indesign file the argument is not passing to the Indesign.exe, but the argument passes to the Indesign proxy. Something like this
"C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS4\InDesign.exe" "%1"
to this
"C:\Program Files\IDproxy\proxy.exe" "%1"
2. The proxy exe lists all the version of IDs in a dialog box. If user selects CS2, the proxy exe passes the command argument something like this
"C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS2\InDesign.exe" "%1"
3. Now the file will open in correct version.
I am comfort with VB forums and coding but I am struck getting the file path while user double click's the file. I short need to get the file path of "%1" argument.
I think I am detailed.
Kindly advice me how can I proceed more?

I don't think it's a mistake.
"InDesign CS4 (3.0)"
means: this is the OM for InDesign 3.0 (i.e., InDesign CS) that is contained in InDesign CS4.
Wait -- do you mean there might be a difference between "the OM for InDesign 4.0 (i.e., InDesign CS2) that is contained in InDesign CS4" and, say, "OM for InDesign 4.0 (i.e., InDesign CS2) that is contained in InDesign CS5" ?
Why on earth would anyone need that? I imagine it's not because even with versioning the 'older' scripts may not behave the same -- there must be dozens of mails about versioning not working ... I mean, if Adobe knows what causes older scripts to stop working (because, if I understand you correctly, they retroactively change it in the documentation for older versions), wouldn't it be yet easier to not cause those changes?

Back-saving Adobe CC / CS6 InDesign files for use in Adobe InDesign CS3?

I am currently running Adobe CS3 on a Macintosh computer / OS. Is it possible to back-save Adobe CC / CS6 InDesign files for use in Adobe InDesign CS3?

@kc.k – You will need InDesign CS4 for that.
CS4 is the only version, that can export/import both IDML and INX exchange formats.
And you need an exported INX file (from InDesign CS4) that can open your exported IDML file from CS6, CC or CC-2014.
Since you are still running CS3 I'd suggest you downloading a 30days version of CS4 and do the conversion:

CS3 for a STUDENT is TOO EXPENSIVE

I am a student and I don't have $400 I can just shell out for a legal copy of CS3. If you want more people to buy CS3 instead of download it. Make it CHEAPER. I can understand you charging school a bunch to buy the software cause they have the money. But I am a single user and don't have that kind of cash. I'm about to just buy painter. I can get a student copy of painter and a wacom bundle for less then cs3.

When it comes down to it, all your really concerned about here is your pocket. Your not really concerned with how much work has gone into the creating of the product, or the fact that Adobe HAS released a cheaper version of the software for those in school, or even the fact that they let you upgrade from educational to the real thing at the same rate as everyone else who actually bought the full thing (costs $199 to go from CS2 Edu to CS3 retail just like going from CS2 retail to CS3 retail).
Also, even considering the fact that Adobe products are pirated so frequently, they have not raised the price from where it was to make up for it.
Are you familiar with the software Maya? It's the animation software by AutoDesk that's taught by most 3D design schools and it cost $7500 a seat. But instead of trolling AutoDesk's forums about the price most students use free-ware 3-D Applications to learn how to animate.
Photoshop is professional grade software. It's not Paint Shop Pro that you can go pick up at your local Target store.
If your looking for cheap consumer-based products, Photoshop Elements 6.0 is available to you for $99 right here on this website, and even it has a large portion of the functions of Photoshop CS3.

Why would Extension Manager CS6 report dependency issues for 29 InDesign CS6 factory plug-ins?

Suddenly Extension Manager CS6 is reporting dependency issues for 29 InDesign CS6 factory plug-ins. I made no changes to those plugins that might have precipitated this. Anyone have any ideas about what might have happened? (This is happening with Extension Manager 6.0.8.28 and InDesign 8.0.2.) Some examples of the plugins reported as not meeting dependency condition are the following:
   Book Panel (8.0.0.370)
   PDF (8.0.2.413)
   Snippet (8.0.0.370)
   XML (8.0.2.413)
   XMLParser (8.0.0.370)

1. You only pasted one log file (log0.log?), there is another more important log file: ExtensionManager.log you dind't paste.
2. Have you removed ALL mxi files from ALL subfolders of BOTH "C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Extension Manager CS6\EM Store" AND "C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Extension Manager CS6\EM Store" to separate folder? If yes, Extension Manager shouldn't hang.
3. Please make sure you have "Full control" permission to ""C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Extension Manager CS6\Configuration\DB\ExMan.db" and "C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Extension Manager CS6\Configuration\DB\ExManUser.db". You can check it in "Security" tab page of "Properties" dialog box.

You can only return the machine if you're within 14 days of purchase - otherwise you're just 'stuck' with what you purchased (unless you sell it, of course).
I always recommend that Retina owners order 16GB of RAM as the RAM is not upgradable - it's soldered onto the logic board.
Your call - if you're with 14 days of purchase, take it back and exchange for a 16GB model. Or sell it and buy a model with 16GB. The higher amount of memory will allow you to run far more memory-hungry apps concurrently.

Posted the entire text from the error window, when trying to update, using the normal NON-TECHIE way to update any and all Adobe CC products, via the Creative Cloud updater installed when Adobe Creative Cloud subscription was purchased when first offered.
The following occurs, ad nauseam:

Here's the crux of my frustration:
(1) Customer Service is NOT contact-able, to receive LIVE help.
(2) There is NO way for me to mitigate this "Download error", being a student learning InDesign, and NOT in any way capable of tweaking folders/files here and there.
Therefore, the real question:
Given that a significant number of subscribers are having the above referenced issue with attempting to download the current update for InDesign, WHAT ARE WE SUPPOSED TO DO, in order to get our contractually paid-for updates to our legally and contractually paid-for Adobe software, specifically in my case, InDesgin's current update?
Please, NO TECHNICAL mumbo-jumbo which most likely will cause the overwhelming majority of users, like me, to seriously corrupt their computer files, but rather an honest, straightforward "what to do" from real CS/Engineers working for Adobe, as to how to FIX this issue, period.

UPDATE:
Here is a way in which I think I was able to "update" my InDesign CC application:
(1) Sign-In to your Adobe Account

(2) Click on the MENU icon
(3) Click on the product InDesign icon
Your browser should display the page for Adobe InDesign CC

(4) Click on the Download icon,
Your browser should now display the page to download InDesign,

(5) a Pop-Up window should open, and display:
Launch Application
This link needs to be opened with an application.
with the first option to select being the CreativeCloud(URIHandler)
(5) Select this application and click OK.
What happened when I followed steps (1) thorugh (5) is that:
(a) InDesign CC(2014) was installed,
(b) InDesign CC, updated, and then
(c) InDesign CC(2014), also updated.
Why this all worked, is a mystery to me.
Looks like a separate, "new" version of InDesign, InDesign CC(2014), was installed, the existing "old" InDesign was updated, and then the newly installed Indesign CC(2014) was further updated.
A BIT MORE, when I launched my InDesign CC app, and checked to see if there were Updates Available, there in fact was an Adobe InDesign CC 64 bit (9.2.2) update.
I clicked on UPDATE and my "old" InDesign CC app was "successfully updated."
FURTHER INFO: I may have neglected to list some important info ... OS: Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center, 64-bit
Confused, I am able to launch BOTH of these apps, and hopefully I may use one of these versions of the InDesign CC app, to do some InDesign work.

Printing from InDesign asking for computer login password

Hi. Just got new MacPro, CS4 Design Premium. Every time printing from InDesign asking for computer login password. Never happened with CS3. Is there any way to avoid job holding in printer's dialog box, waiting for authentification? No problems printing from Acrobat, Photoshop or Entourage etc. Checked computer preferences, nothing shows permission/security restrictions are applied. What could cause holding print jobs from InDesign?
Here's what it says in Status field: On Hold (Authentification required)...so I have to click “Resume” every time, enter password and only then it prints.
Printer: HP5100 laserJet. HP did not associated this issue with printer or drivers. Please help. Thanks!

Sharing has been set up, PW is in keychain. Still asking for "authenification"..
After talking to Adobe tech support, here's the answer:
"Issue: When attempting to print, customer is continually asked to authenticate.
Resolution: Printer is possibly too old to understand the print data InDesign is outputting. Try updating drivers or using a newer printer".
I guess I will request new printed from management, mine is 2003...

InDesign CS6 for Windows: Type tool crashes program and am getting missing plug-in msgs.

Just installed InDesign CS6 for Windows. When I open the program, I receive three messages:
(1) Paragraph Panel.APLN needs Justification Panel plugin;
(2) Runin Styles Panell.APLN needs Find and Change Panel plug-in;
(3) Objectstylesui.APLN needs Graphics Panel plug-in.
To top it off, the type tool crashes the program.
I couldn't locate any current forum postings that appeared to help. I have uninstalled and re-installed the software. I have done an update from Adobe.
Advice? This is an educator's addition if that matters.

Thank for your help Peter. My software is working just fine now.
For others who might encounter these issues, here is how - with Peter Spier's help - I solved my problems. I uninstalled the previous CS6 version and re-booted. I disconnected from the Internet and then disabled my antivirus protection, antispyware and firewall. I had to do this in Norton as well as Windows (Windows Defender and Windows Firewall). Then I re-loaded the entire CS6 and re-booted. I opened InDesign. I no longer got the msgs about plug-ins missing. I then opened a new file and checked the Type tool. It worked fine. I opened an InDesign CS3 file, saved it as a new file in ID CS6. I was able to successfully edit text using the Type Tool.

I use iBookAuthor to make a textbook for my students; I revised it, including title page, but when I export it and upload it to my iPad, the old title page appears, even though I've deleted the older version of the text before I upload the new one.

Last year I produced a textbook using iBookAuthor for my students. I exported it as an iBook and they uploaded it to their iPads. This year, I revised it, including revising the title page. However, when I upload the new version, the old title page is shown, not the new one. I deleted the older version of the textbook before I did this. I've been told that I can cut and paste each revised chapter into a new template and that will work; however, title page and glossary can't be cut and pasted. Any thoughts for getting the entire new version on the iPad? I'm also told that if it is uploaded to an iPad that never had a previous version of this textbook, it will upload correctly. But my iPad has had several older versions, now deleted.

I had a similar issue when trying to create an iBook file to submit for course credit for one of the Apple Learning Essentials classes I took. I had a book I'd started previously which I updated and submitted, and then had to make some edits to for the course evaluator. I made the edits, and when I previewed the book in iBooks Author, it looked correct, but whatever I sent to him only showed some of the edits - for example a new page I created was there, but some edits I made to image captions and the title page image were not.
What worked for me was to do a "Save as" of the actual Author file to a totally new location (I used the Desktop), and then submit that file - which seemed to work in terms of the changes sticking. I even used the same file name.
I'm not sure if some similar action might help you (maybe change the file name slightly?) or if you've already tried something like this.
Still doesn't change the fact that this is a pretty irritating bug.

Does anybody have a copy of the Media for Adobe Photoshop CS3 standard (English) or know where i can download it.
I know its rather old at this stage but we have misplaced our CD and for some reason adobe are unwilling to make a copy of the media available to me. Luckily i still have the licence certificate for the software. The component description on the software certificate is

IPad or Macbook Air for a student?

Hello all. I am a student who recently began my degree in the Norwegian equivalent of College. I was thinking of getting an Apple device primarily for lectures, but also for recreational purposes. Right now I have an iPhone 5, and a fairly powerful laptop, but a short- lived battery and the size of the laptop is a bit of an issue for lectures and packing. I also have a pretty large music library, and i stream a lot of movies/shows, as well as music.
My main purposes for the purchase will be note- taking and document managing, streaming/surfing and iTunes. I also want something with which I can entertain myself on travels and such. Let's assume I will get the next generation of whatever device, as I understand they are both around the corner.
Personally, I'm leaning towards an iPad with at least 32GB memory and a keyboard, considering I have a good Windows laptop. The price is also a little more manageable. The lack of HDMI output is a drawback though.
On a side note: how is managing documents on an apple device and synchronizing with a Windows device done? Any programs/apps I should know about?
