InDesign Layout - Printer wants in AI?

We're designing an instruction manual, and supplied the factory with a PDF file of the artwork. They are saying that their printer can not print PDF files and require the artwork laid out in an Illustrator file in print spreads. Has anyone had this issue before?

There have been a few similar postings about printers in Japan not being able to deal with PDF, but I'll add my voice to this list of folks telling you to run, not walk, away from this guy. It would probably be better if he <shudder> placed your PDF in Quark and printed from that, but he probably can't handle that either.<br /><br />Where are you located? Is there an Adobe Service Network partner near you (not that they are the only ones who can do the job right)? <br /><br />Check this link for a short list of printers:<br />http://partners.adobe.com/public/partnerfinder/psp/show_find.do<br /><br />Peter

  • CS4 InDesign not printing correctly on HP1320 LaserJet for 2-sided booklets

I'm trying to print chapters in a book, using 2-sided printing from CS4 InDesign (V 6.0.4) to an HP1320 LaserJet printer using an iMac computer. This used to work with CS InDesign (V 3.0.1) using a Dell PC and the same printer. The page prints on both sides, but is limited to 8.5 inches of the 11 in side.  [My pages are 5 1/2 by 8 1/2 with two pages on one side of the page; when finished, the book is 5 1/2" by 8.5".] I've tried lots of combinations of page orientation in both the InDesign File/Print Booklet/Print Settings.../Setup and in the File/Print Booklet/Print Settings.../Printer... but nothing seems to solve this. Any suggestions?  Thanks.

You need to be sure the print dialog is set up to print the pages in landscape orientation.
    -=-=-=-=-
I'd be happy to try. Here are the steps I take, but you should realize that I've done this so many times over the past several days (up to a couple of weeks) that I try different things each time.
I've got a couple of book projects that use similar formats. One is a textbook and the second is a daily log I keep (not always "daily"). Both are printed and bound to become books that are on the order of 400 to 500 pages and are 8.5" by 5.5" in size.  So, I have a file I want to print and I want it to come out with side-by-side 5.5 x 8.5" pages (two on each side of an 8 1/2 by 11 inch sheet of paper (i.e., two sided printing).
In InDesign, I click on File, Print Booklet..., and here is what the window looks like: [see attached file "Screen shot 2009-12-02 at 5.51.44 PM.pgn.]
To get it to show "Booklet Type: 2-up Saddle Stitch," I had to click on "Print Settings" at the bottom and select "Setup" and then "Orientation: landscape (2nd from the left on the choice of four orientations)."  I also usually go to "Page Setup..." and make sure I chose "Orientation: landscape."
Then I go to the "Printer..." button at the bottom of the "Print" window and select things so it looks like this:  [see attached file "Screen shot 2009-12-02 at 5.57.44 PM.pgn.]
To get this, I had to click on the "Layout" option and then "Booklet Printing." That automatically selected "Two-Sided" printing.
As far as choices go, I think that is it.
The page that printed most recently with those settings came out with four (not two) pages on each side of the page. Further, the four pages that printed on the back side of the sheet of paper were upside down relative to those on the front side. This may be the result of using "2-up Saddle Stitch" but I'm not sure of that.
But here is the problem that has really been bugging me: the pages on one side of the paper don't go as far toward the margin as they should. Here is one example of low-res pictures of the front of the page that printed.
The page shows two full "pages" along the left top and right top, but along the left and right bottom pages, only about half of the pages printed.  The back side of the sheet of paper was similar, with only half of the "pages" showing for two of the four pages on this side.
So, I hope this is enough information for you. I'd be happy to provide more if needed. And thank you for even attempting to help. I've been struggling with this issue for a couple of weeks (I'm retired, so I sure don't spend full time on it, but I sure have spent hours at it, all to no avail).

  • PDFs from InDesign for print then web?

The workflow is supposed to be: we simply take the PDF files which were created from InDesign and then sent to our printer, and give them to our web service company who has our online edition finished by morning. But we're upgrading our photo processing for the print edition, which results in overly bright photos for printing on newsprint. With a 48 page tiny-town newspaper, it would be a major problem to replace all of the photos in the layout with specially processed ones for web. But we need to have PDFs for our web service company that contain, richer, higher contrast photos for web.
Is there some trick other than manually processing new photos for every page and manually re-linking each one on every page? Maybe CS4 has some feature that makes this easy, i.e., automated web version of an InDesign layout, i.e., links to an alternate folder of photos just for a web version?
    CS2 / Mac OS 10.4.11 / various Mac hardware

RGB-workflow is just a way to do things... You can do it in at least CS2, CS3 and CS4 softwares, propably with earlier versions too. It basically means that you adjust your images in some wide RGB gamut, like AdobeRGB, then save them without making CMYK conversion and place them to indesign layout as RGB images. When you export your PDF, you make that RGB-CMYK conversion to all images at once.
Normally people can use same adjustments for both web- and print images. When image is adjusted well, icc-profile that will be used for RGB-CMYK converion will take care of fine tuning like compensating midtones and Total Ink Limits...
In InDesign CS4 you can use Photoshop PSD images with adjustment layers. If you really have to make some adjustment that would be nice to get rid off in indesign, you may toggle visibility of those adjustment layers in InDesigns Object Layer Options tool.
I still suggest that you try to fix your workflow so that you don´t have to make any extra adjustments to images for printing after you have once placed them to indesign layout. It should be possible, millions of publishers do that every day...

  • When exporting my Indesign Layout with Images, the images disappear ?

When exporting my indesign layout the images disappear once exporting as a PDF print.
I have had several information bubbles appear claiming I need to alter my blend space due or colour settings ?
I have altered the blend space to rgb and still it does not work.
I have also unlocked all the layers in attempt for this to work.
My assignment is due in tomorrow and still I cannot get this feature to work
any help would be great !

    CharlieLDavis1992 wrote:
When in preview mode they do not appear either.
If you understood my question and the images also disappear in InDesign when switching the screen to Preview mode, or Overprint Preview, that means they are set to non-printing in some way. Either they are on a layer set to non-printing, or they're set to non-printing on an individual basis in the Attributes panel.
    >I am using the latest OS,
Not really helpful. OS X? Windows? Probably not relevant, as it turns out, for this problem, but you should be specific.
    >The pdf appears in preview
Does that mean you are trying to use Mac Preview to view the PDF? If so, it may give you bad results. Mac Preview is not a godd general-purpose PDF viewer and is incapable of rendering complex PDF.
The first error dialog you show is what you would get when opening a file in ID that has different document color spaces than the default settings in your color settings file. That's not a problem, and to preserve the color appearances you would leave things as they are.
The second warning dialog indicates you are making an interactive PDF, which is RGB. If you are using CMYK images I don't think you'll avoid color shifts no matter what you do if you have transparency, but I don't do interactive PDF, so I can't give good advice here. If you are using RGB images, by all means your transparency blend space should be set to RGB.
Can you post a screen shot of the export dialog?

  • Indesign Layout and cross media .pdf conversion

I was hoping someone could help me with this.
I have many projects which I design for print that need to be posted to our website to be accessed by our members. We use a web hosting company that has an online web-based application for content management. Our usual method is to generate a .pdf file and post it to our website as a file our members can download.
The problem I have is that many times the final Indesign layout for print doesn't translate to .pdf without a moderate amount of changes to the layout (no bleeds, single 8.5"x11" pages etc.). This causes me to have to do the design and layout twice for a project - once for print and once for web.
Is there something out there (plug-in etc.) that will help me automate this process?

I think that the OP is actually looking to automate exactly what you described; I sometimes gin up some JS because I'll have five brochures in ten languages from which I need to generate three different flavors of PDF (e.g. lowres, print-ready, imposed). The sheer number of keystrokes involved make automation desireable.
Hey OP, how much Javascript do you know?

  • [Ann.] Before starting yet another discussion complaining about InDesign's "Print Booklet ..."

If InDesign's "Print Booklet" feature isn't doing what you want, please try the "Booklet SC 5.0" script (formerly "Booklet CE").
Unlike Print Booklet, Booklet SC doesn't force you to print ... instead, it creates a new InDesign document whose pages are in the proper "saddle stitch" (or perfect bound) order. This allows you to print wherever and whenever you want, or convert to PDF. Also unlike Print Booklet, graphics which span the reader spreads are handled properly.
Booklet SC optionally creates cut marks / printer marks on the output printer spreads, giving additional prepress flexibility.
Booklet SC should still work with earlier versions of InDesign, back to CS2 or so, and up through CS5, Mac and Windows.
    http://sterlingcomputing.com
(Note: after 3 usages, Booklet SC starts to nag you every third time to send $10, to support my espresso habit, reward me for spending all that time writing and testing this complex script, encourage me to keep the script up to date, and help me to know who is using the script. If you cannot afford the $10, you can either live with the nagging, or continue your struggle with Print Booklet.)
    The main dialog:
With an 8-page booklet, the pages are reordered like this:

    Hi Stephen,
Nice looking dialog. I added [Ann.] to the title to make it clear what this post is.
BTW, the dialog looks like it's a Script UI one. That will not work in CS2. Do you have a more basic dialog for CS2, or is this only for CS3-CS5?

  • Indesign Booklet printing

I've been putting together my portfolio using indesign, I have been doing it setup on landscape A2 pages. When I come to print it it is cheaper at uni to print off two pages on one A1 sheet and trim it myself than print each onto a separate A2 sheet each time.
    http://img501.imageshack.us/img501/5931/42388234vm4.jpg
This is a screen of a couple of my pages, I basically want to create a set of pdfs which I can send to the printer which have two of these A2 pages on one A1 Page, which should work with the two images sat on top of each other on an A1 portrait.
I've had a play with the print settings/booklet settings but cant figure out how I go about setting it to print like that, sure it can be done as it has all the booklet options, just cant figure out which settings i need to play with.
    Anyone shed any light?
    Many Thanks
    Simon

I think you will need to rotate all the images to put them 2-up.
Teus de Jong wrote a script a couple of years ago for doing this for calendars:

From there I think you could simply print as spreads, or export a new PDF as spreads if the printer wants a PDF.

  • InDesign CS3 Print Booklet function

I have an issue with InDesign CS3 Print Booklet Function.
Certainly Print Booklet is not InBooklet by any stretch. It does however have to be an integral part of the InDesign Program(one of the reasons it is better than QuarkXPress).
Print Booklet takes the age old practice of creating 4 page signatures for booklets of 4-page multiples and when you get to 12-16 pages it mysteriously inserts blank pages making non-4 page multiple booklets. I have had 12 page booklets made into 14 and 16 page booklets into 18 pages.
Is there a fix for this issue forthcoming from Adobe, or has anyone discovered a workaround?
I do not want to teach students that they have to go to PDF's and use another way to impose, when it is an important part of InDesign.
    Jack Mertes

    >I click Printer Settings to make sure I've got spreads selected and crop marks etc.
Make sure you DON'T have the "print spreads" box checked when setting up to use Print Booklet.
    >make booklet makes low res pages in an InDesign file and Booklet CE 3.5 makes a new InDesign file up of individual PDFs but the pages are all out of order.
I'm not sure what you mean by "make booklet makes low res pages." Are you referring to Dave's MakeBooklet.jsx script? That simply places the pages from an existing InDesign file into a new file in Printer spread order. It's up to you what sort of resolution any page element has in the original file, or what PDF settings you use to make a PDF from the new file. Perhaps you need to adjust your View > Display Quality setting?
The pages in an imposed file SHOULD be "all out of order." You are looking at printer's spreads, not reader's spreads. Are they not in the correct order for printing?

  • Indesign RGB printing

Hi we have Indesin CS3 and we have great problems printing to our Inkjet printers getting wild variations on colour
we have an eye one calibrator and have no problems calibrating and get great results
we need to use indesign to print several photographs and text from indesign
Ie template with photos text boxes with ids and logos we do not wish to manipulate the images as they are medical shots and we require the original colours / exposure
when printing indesign uses "composite" whereas photoshop uses RGB
any suggestions as to where i am going wrong please.
    Paul

I heard about something like this but i thought it was a bug related to CS3. And i'm using CS4. Don't you think it's even possible that Adobe never fxied such an important problem ??
This happens in both CS3 and CS4. I would not say that it is necessarily an Adobe bug, seems more like an Apple bug to me.
By the way, i tried to print with 'print as bitmap' enabled but i don't think i'm gonna use that because the way it render text is not really good : text is becoming bolder etc For me its crap. I could use it onl for the chats but i think there is not point in doing that : i print the charts using bitmap then use the profil created with the charts without this option, it will give false result i think !
I understand, but that is the way that IDCS2 and earlier printed. At least that is what we are being told.
What printer are you using that text is becoming bolder? I have not seen that when testing "Print as Bitmap" with the Canon drivers. That is probably another bug related to Apple and the printer drivers.
So if i understand what you say, my Indesign CS4 would (still) involve my monitor profil to print my document ? I don't understand how i can fix this ? Actually i use an Eizo monitor calibrated with an Eye-one 2 so the profil must be ok but still i don't want this profil to be involved in the printing process !
I had to use this option before Leopard and the "Fast Graphic Process" option in the Canon drivers. It is certainly a workable option, but that profile will be specific for that computer/monitor and ID only? I did not have a real problem when I had to do this and one would be hard pressed to see a difference with the ID print done this way compared with a print from PS using the PS chart generated profile.

I am pulling my hair out! I am using adobe indesign and just want to make a text box 'autofit text' as I change fonts a lot and want the font to automatically re-size as I change it.
Is it not possible to create a text box, fill it with dynamic (data driven) text, but make the font size either scale up or down automatically, so that the entire text box is filled? This is a feature in PrintShop Mail Pro called COPY FIT. but no such feature in Indesign??
help help help please - I have latest version of indesign - thanks, DJ

lol... it seems to work, but I have another huge problem!
Apparently .CSV files cannot contain page breaks in the data! The data I am trying to merge is a 'letter', with paragraphs, line breaks, etc.,
But, after data merging, it ignores page breaks and only merges the first paragraph of each letter. (sigh)
Solution? Hopefully, an EASY solution. lol as we have thousands of records.
Is there a third party indesign plugin that will allow .xml, or .xls data merge import??
    Thx,

  • Need help with getting images to look smooth (without the bitmap squares) around the edges. When I transfer the image from pictures, it sets itself into the InDesign layout, but with square edges. I need to find out how to get it to look smooth?

Need to find out how to get my images transferred into an InDesign layout without the rough edges, as with a bit map image, but to appear with smooth edges in the layout. I can notice it more when I enlarge the file (pic). How can I get it to appear smooth in the finished layout. Another thing too that I noticed; it seems to have effected the other photos in the layout. They seem to be
pixelated too after I import the illustration (hand drawn artwork...)? Any assistance with this issue will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

No Clipboard, no copy & paste, as you would not get the full information of the image.
When you paste you can't get the image info from the Links panel, but you can get resolution and color info either via the Preflight panel or by exporting to PDF and checking the image in Acrobat.
Here I've pasted a 300ppi image, scaled it, and made a Preflight rule that catches any image under 1200ppi. The panel gives me the effective resolution of the pasted image as 556ppi. There are other workflow reasons not to paste—you loose the ability to easily edit the original and large file sizes—but pasting wouldn't cause a loss in effective resolution or change in color mode.

  • HTML/CSS match to InDesign layout

    Hello,
I have been given the task of taking an InDesign layout from CS6, and building it in HTML/CSS. The challenging part is that it is required to be 1:1 pixel perfect. When I open it in Google Chrome–which is going to be the standard browser it’s opened in–the font raggs differently.
When I overlay a PNG of the HTML site, and a PNG from the InDesign file it is no where close to pixel-perfect. The text wrapping differently is the main issue at hand. I have tried every CSS hack possible to adjust letter-spacing and word-spacing, I've also explored Google Fonts to attempt to get a better match.
Does anyone have any experience with a similar ask? In CS6 you can’t specify type pixels, I’m not sure it would matter if you could, because it seems that InDesign is using it’s own conversion for what it considers a pixel.
    Please help!!!

Agreed, it's way too optimistic. InDesign is a typographic design application, under development since 1999. Already in its very first version, its type engine came "fully grown and armed, with a shout", supporting enough advanced features to squash all but the very stubbornest competition (I'm looking at you, TeX).
HTML/CSS, on the other hand, has had problems displaying "plain text" since its very beginnings. Only the very latest version of CSS finally addresses some typographic features (probably unnecessary to add, but anyway: with mixed results for different browsers).
" ..it seems that InDesign is using [its] own conversion for what it considers a pixel", you bet it does. After all, there was a web crowd that outright demanded "pixels" to be a measurement unit in InDesign. Adobe did a have a stab at adding pixels, and if one would ask me, they did it the wrong way. But that's no fault in InDesign. ID has its roots firmly in the "real world", that is, you can design a document with a precision right up to the wavelength of visible light; and ID will happily produce output for it. Your "pixel", on the other -- Darker -- Side, "is" not a real thing. It has no width or height. If you think it does, it goes only for your screen. You may say, "but if necesasry I can hold a magnifier to my screen and count the itty bitty lights!" What if you do so, and discover that your screen does not consist of square pixels, but round ones, or hexagonal, or elongated rectangles? And any measurement would only be value for just your screen. What about mine, your bosses', or your client's?
Following John's advice, here is a list of features you would need to switch off (as most are enabled by default) before you can even think of mimicking ID's sophisticated text engine in HTML:
    ligatures
    alternate characters
    real small capitals
    tabular or oldstyle figures
.. wait -- better switch off *all* OTF features
Paragraph composer. Use the dumb One Line At A Time And We'll See How Far We Get Composer.
    Language based hyphenation.
Minimum/Optimal/Maximum Word Spacing (CSS must be using this internally, else it could not show justified text; however, I don't think you can set its parameters)
Letter Spacing and Glyph Scaling (although to be fair, these seem to be already off by default).
~16 decimals of precision for every object, line width, text size, spacing, et cetera
    any real-world based measurement unit.
I probably forgot a few too.
    --- add.
    Advanced character/class kerning
Optical kerning (not enabled by default)
    -- add2.
Balance Ragged Lines (off by default; but you can't use it)
    Optical Margin Alignment (as above)
    Align to Baseline grid
    last line indent
    Align to spine
justify last line (can only be achieved with span/div tricks)
    tabs
about all internal hyphenation settings (CSS allows 'none', 'manual', and 'auto')
live text color outline (I may be mistaken, but I bet if it were possible literally everybody would be using it by now -- just like the dreaded "blink" tag did, before it was deemed illegal by federal law)
skewed text. I know, nobody with a grain of sense uses it in ID.[*] Still, you can't do it in CSS so I'm gonna list it anyway.
[*] Except myself, by the way. But I don't use it willy-nilly, only after exhausting all the good and the bad options; then yes, I go for the Ugly look.
