InDesign lock files, read only permissions...

I've had this strange problem for over a year now, unsure as to why it was happening. Now I've realized what the problem is, but I don't know how to fix it.
We build ads in InDesign. Production, who builds the ads, has basically full control to the ads network drive. Sales, on the other hand, has only read access. They want to print ads out on occasion, but I don't want them to be able to screw the ad up by mistake (they know just enough to get the ad to print).
Here's the problem...
Someone one sales opens an ad. Well, they don't have create or write permissions (Win 2003 server, XP workstations). So the InDesign lock file is never created. But they do obtain a read lock on the file on a Windows/OS level.
So what happens is, the production staff opens the ad while the sales person opens the ad. There's no lock file, so the production person isn't warned that the file is open. But because there's an OS lock on the ad, the ad opens for the production staff, but it opens as read only.
My first problem is that I don't know how to fix this without giving our sales people full access, which I cannot do. The second problem is that any app that happens to access those files (shadow copy perhaps???) will cause the same headache for the production staff, as there is contention to the file.
So I'm in a catch-22 here. I'm wondering if any of you have been in the same boat and know if there is a work around.
We're using InDesign 3 (CS) on XP.

Or export to PDF every time the ad is updated, and only give them access to the PDFs through Reader - keep them away from InDesign completely. If you are only giving them InDesign to view ads, you could save money on unnecessary InDesign licenses.

  • Files copied from other PC getting "read only" permissions

I have a PC running Fedora and Samba and when I drag a folder from the Finder onto my desktop it gets "Read Only" permissions. I cant remember that this happened with 10.5.1 or Tiger.
Anyone having the same problem or know how to fix it?

Try clicking "File>Get info" on the file, and look at it's permissions. Clicking the lock lets you change them, providing you have the right credentials.

  • External Drive Permissions Locked to Read ONLY - HELP!

    Hello:
I have recently moved from a powerbook to an imac. The external I used with the powerbook was working fine until I began to use it with the imac. Once I hooked it up to the imac, I only had read permissions. I have never set any of the permissions on the disk and have always left it open. Thinking it was just the imac, I plugged it back into the pb, to find it was also appears locked to read only. I have gone through the web looking for solutions and I cannot seem to find a solution.
When I open get info about the disk, under sharing and permissions, its says "you can only read"
under the list of name: wkim has read and write privlige, staff and everyone get read only. I am wkim, so what gives? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

ok. my problems were probably not related and were fixed by reinstalling 10.5.2 with the Combo Updater found on (www.apple.com/downloads)...this probably won't help you but won't hurt so may be worth a try...
your permission problems probably have something to do with user IDs changing from one machine to the next. Try first to "repair permissions" with Disk Utility on your main HD. you can also go to Terminal and navigate to the problem directory and enter "ls -ln" to see what user ID and group ID own the files. then type just "id" to see what your local ID is. if they don't match then you'll probably need to change them with chown or chgrp.
hopefully someone else will chime in here as 10.5 has created convoluted permission problems and I still haven't worked out my own...

  • Can't copy files from NTFS volume with Read Only permissions?

I am trying to copy files from an NTFS volume used previously for Windows onto another volume which is Mac OS X Extended...
However, certain files fail to copy due to the fact that I 'don't have permission to access some of the items'...
So I found the items which are causing the issue and viewed the permissions for them which display as 'You can only read'... I presume I am correct taking these as read-only permissions which (to my knowledge) should allow the files/folders to be copied accross to a new volume assuming that the existing volume is left without any changes attempted.
So can anyone suggest to me why this is? And how I might rectify the issue?
    Thanks in advance

Ok I've just worked out that 'You can only read' is referring to the fact that I can only view permissions but not add any. Below this statement, no permissions are listed which may explain why I cannot access the files but does not explain why I can copy/access some files, also with no permissions...

    ElMagoElGato,
I am glad to give some help but I am still confused because we are having different experiences. I have been able to lock Tables on my mac and have that lock respected in iOS for a long while now. Easy to unlock, impossible to relock.  With the most recent upgrade I can lock tables after tapping the upper left dot to select the whole table and going to "arrange" in the paintbrush.
When you say worksheet are you meaning the entire file? When you say file lock are you meaning password protection? You can see I am confused.

Based on what ElMagoElGato has described, password protecting would be of no value to him. Once the file is accessed, it is in edit mode. Unless I'm really missing something.
Files I have imported from Mac iworks apps with elements locked stay locked for me in iOS. Not sure what the problem is.

  • DI API - accessing objects with Read only permissions

Scenario: I have setup a user in B1 with "Read Only permissions" on the Business Partner. When I log into the DI API as this user and try instantiating the BP object, I get a message "Loged on user does not have permissions".
Why am I getting this? Shouldnt I be able to instantiate the object and read the property values. i understand that I cannot Add or Update because of read only permissions.
Is there a way we can retreive values for users using the DI API or should the best option be to write a SQL statement.
    Thanks,
    Gopal

Requiring the user to have full authorization to instantiate an object is a serious limitation for the DI API. It makes it virtually useless. After all it is supposed to be OOP and all the trimmings isn’t it? It also takes a lot of control away from the user.
    +1
    Hi,
I have confirmation from B1 product definition, the DI API access for objects with Read only permissions will not be included in the 2007A version. It will be considered for the following version after 2007A.
There is a chapter called "Authorization Checks" in the SDK Help file specifying:
"SAP Business One performs authorization checks for the business objects and the infrastructure and meta data objects. If a user does not have full authorization to access the objects in SAP Business One, the user will not have permission to access the data belonging to the business objects using the DI API."

  • Ref. Orig. can't be moved to sys. trash: locked or read-only.  Fix?

Another new one (amazing what one uncovers under deadline ).  See screen shot:
Some of these files are from a Leaf Aptus 70 (they were part of the Ap3 Tutorial) and are very large.  Large or small, I like to run a clean ship.  Can I search in Finder (or Terminal) for locked or read-only files?  They are all on one external drive.  There are other ways to root them out, but I don't have the time right now.
    Thanks.
    --Kirby.
    (Added:)
Can I do this to my entire referenced originals drive without _any_ repercussions?
You can unlock all files in a folder by opening the Terminal in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and entering the following:
    chflags -R nouchg
followed by a space. Drag the folder into the Terminal window and press Enter to unlock the items.

I'm not being clever today.  Found a different, easy, solution.  Right-clicked one of each set of Images and selected "Show in Finder".  This brought up the Finder folder containing all the Images with that date.  Then emptied the Aperture Trash.  At warning, clicked "Continue".  Went back to the Finder windows and ... found out the joke is on me: all the files in question were moved to the system trash.  I have no idea what files were flagged "Read Only" or "Locked".
At some point I will "Consolidate all Originals" or relocate them to a different drive and examine the files left on the referenced Originals drive.  Not sure what I'll find.  All the Aptus files ( .mos) and all the other "not mine" Originals that I was trying to remove from the Library are now in my system trash.
Thanks for the help (and the caution) though -- I'm ignorant of Unix and like to think that I'm wise enough to not use it or, at a minimum, to ask experts for an "OK" first  .

  • How can I make Keynote files read-only (eg: to share with students)?

I would like to share some keynote files with students, and I would like to set them up as read-only, so that the students can tap the screen, read my presentation, but not alter it.  I've tried to set the files up as read-only on my iMac desktop, but when I load the file onto my iPad, it's still editable.
Any ideas re: how to make Keynote files read-only?
I've tried to export the files as PDF and load them into iBook, but some of Keynote's basic "build" functions won't work this way.  Specifically, I have files set up with questions and answers (ie - a question appears, and you have to tap the screen to see the answer, but this "build" function seems to disappear when I get it to show up in iBook).
Any ideas how to make Keynote files read-only?  I am happy to use another program, but I want the students to tap the screen in order to see the answer to a question.
    Thanks!

as long as $PATH is set, you shouldn't need to reconnect them (i think).  if you send the list of apps through | awk -F '/' '{print $NF}' | that'll strip the path
/edit: added the "(i think)" part

  • Read only permissions

one of my testing team requested for read only permissions on database, so what are the permissions that i can grant to them. Just to see the database tables .....

Well depending on how often you expect this type of request to come up people often create a role to handle the grants.
    Two things to consider.
    1. Do you care that they can access any table on the database...that includes the system tables?
If not then you can grant them create session and select any table.
However, I find this to extreme at times, but often the "easy" way out.
    2. You can grant them select on only that tables you will them to be able to read.
    grant select on owner.table_name to user_name;
and of course the create session privilege.
Now people often find this to be a pain because for each new table they have to grant the select again. However, you can probably search google or create your own script that selects the table name from dba_tables and have it create all the grant lines in another script that you can run. Something like
    set pagesize 0
    set linesize 200
    set echo off
    set feedback off
    spool /tmp/grantsql.sql
    select 'grant select on '||&tableOwner||'.'||table_name||' to '||&grantingTo||';' from dba_tables where owner='&tableOwner';
    spool off
    set echo on
    set feedback on
    @/tmp/grantsql.sql

  • InDesign CS5 - preventing "Read Only" files?

    Hi all,
We've always worked on a file server; and InDesign CS4 (and below) would lock any open files so only one person could access the document at a time. Now CS5 appears to let other other people view the INDDs as a read only file while others are working on it.
This allows people to open a live file, make changes and do a Save As. This is really bad for our workflow since we can't risk multiple people accessing a file at one time.
Is there anyway to disable this?
    Thanks.

    Thanks, Stix.
Updating the app fixed it. I tried searching for this answer on the forum first (as is protocol), but couldn't find the answer.
A co-worker found a similar thread/answer as well. I guess I need to fine tune my search skills.

Things like play counts, rating, date last played, etc. are not stored in the song itself but instead are stored in your iTunes database file. Therefore locking down the track will keep people from being able to change things like the name of the song, year, artist, etc. but will not prevent iTunes from updating the database for things like ratings and last played.

  • Read Only Permissions Error

    Hi Guys
I have a major problem with file saving permissions
    Current setup:
    - 5 imac (10.6)
    - 1 mac book pro (10.6)
    - mac xserver
    - Direct attached Raid Array
    Issue:
When user "A" creates new files and folders to the shared drive on the raid array it automatically defaults to read only for all other users, and any time they try to add/delete/create files or folders in the fold user "A" created they get a permissions error. Therefor everybody else cannot edit the files
E.g. user A and user B quite often work on documents together and when user A stores it in the folder user A created then user B can only read it
has anybody come across this error before?
also i have tried changing permissions in get info as it defaults to read only soon as i change it to read and write and close the get info box it reverts back to read only ( the permissions group in called everybody)
Any help would be much appreciated

You can try propagating the permissions on the root of the share, new files should inherit permissions from the parent folder, if that doesn't help, maybe try something with the umask
