Indesign locks folders?

It bugs me that once you've opened a file in Indesign, you can't rename or delete the folder that it was in until you close Indesign totally.  Are there any work arounds to this?  Windows XP SP2, ID CS3, files are stored on a Network Attached Storage drive.

When I try to rename it comes up with this error:
I tried your method of opening and saving another file Ken, but still no joy.  It must be something to do with the NAS, but it's also something to do with Indesign because I don't get the problem with other programs.
Thanks for your help,
Steve.
Edit: Just found out that I can rename the folder on another machine no problem, and once I've done that I can come back to my machine and rename it there also.  So Indesign is putting some sort of lock on it but only on the machine that opens it.  Weird!  Ultimately rather harmless, but keeping my folders tidy, organised and well named is a bit of an obsession for me, I see many people waste lots of time because they don't do basic housekeeping as they go.

  • InDesign lock files, read only permissions...

I've had this strange problem for over a year now, unsure as to why it was happening. Now I've realized what the problem is, but I don't know how to fix it.
We build ads in InDesign. Production, who builds the ads, has basically full control to the ads network drive. Sales, on the other hand, has only read access. They want to print ads out on occasion, but I don't want them to be able to screw the ad up by mistake (they know just enough to get the ad to print).
    Here's the problem...
Someone one sales opens an ad. Well, they don't have create or write permissions (Win 2003 server, XP workstations). So the InDesign lock file is never created. But they do obtain a read lock on the file on a Windows/OS level.
So what happens is, the production staff opens the ad while the sales person opens the ad. There's no lock file, so the production person isn't warned that the file is open. But because there's an OS lock on the ad, the ad opens for the production staff, but it opens as read only.
My first problem is that I don't know how to fix this without giving our sales people full access, which I cannot do. The second problem is that any app that happens to access those files (shadow copy perhaps???) will cause the same headache for the production staff, as there is contention to the file.
So I'm in a catch-22 here. I'm wondering if any of you have been in the same boat and know if there is a work around.
We're using InDesign 3 (CS) on XP.

Or export to PDF every time the ad is updated, and only give them access to the PDFs through Reader - keep them away from InDesign completely. If you are only giving them InDesign to view ads, you could save money on unnecessary InDesign licenses.

  • [JS] InDesign Watched Folders? waiting for some new document

    Hi Everyone
I wrote a script [JS][InD] which checks folders in search of any files and then process them. It mades PDF files and moves original files to a "processed" folder.
Now I want this script to run in the background by certain periods of time (i.e. 10 seconds) without user interaction. Just like the "Watched folders" function on Acrobat Distiller.
Has anybody some suggestion or solution for this?
    Thank you for your help
    Daniel

    Hi,
It's funny because I tried just right now on my own. As I was looking for help on that topic and then I saw your post :-)
The bad news is that I failed to reach that objective. My thought was to use the startup script folder placing a script that will wait for an amount of time and then check for a folder for specific files.
Alas, it seems that the "waiting" process overides Indesign  and then the user can't use its software :-(
I hope someones here as a solution.

  • SLS: Lock folders

    Dear readers and admins
On my server I have created a "sample folder" and did set all the appropriate rights via Posix and ACL. The rights do work the way it was intended. Users are now able to duplicate this folder, but the rights retain, as in "Sample Folder". This works well as it should.
What is missing now, is a function, that allows you to duplicate this "sample Folder", but no user can delete this folder. The check mark "Locked" and/or "Stationery pad" don't help in any way. The folders can still be deleted, after a information/warning message.
How can I change this behavior?
Do I have to create an AppleScript, which either build the directory structure itself, with query as the top directory or is there another solution?
Is it possible to create an AppleScript with all the POSIXS and ACL rights?
Where to find such a script or maybe instructions for such a behavior?
    Thanks for any valuable information.
    Kind regards
    Thomas Thaler

If you log out, other users with accounts on your Mac can't access your Home folder.
You can turn on File Vault if you wish to protect your Home folder with encryption.
If you have critical data that you wish to protect you place it in an encrypted disk image.

If you run your system as a non-administrator, then the other user's folders are locked.
If you then use Fast Switching, those folders are merely a mouse click (and password) away.

How do you lock a folder. Itry to lock my web foundation folder in my sherlock folder, but the lock button was grayed out. I checked other folders and was the same thing. I was trying to follow the instructions from an earlier post on sherlock. See below:

For those of you who are having Sherlock troubles, this has been a permanent fix for me and others: go to Home>Library>Caches>Sherlock and trash the Web Foundation files in the Web Foundation folder. Then go to Get Info and lock the folder. That should be a permanment cure for all your Sherlock woes.

Open the Terminal in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder, and enter the following:
    chflags uchg
Next, drag the folder into the Terminal window and press Enter. To turn this off, replace uchg with nouchg and repeat the command. The Locked checkbox on a folder in the Finder's Get Info window is only changeable in Mac OS X 10.4, and only if you are the folder's owner or root.

  • Drop box lock folders

    Dear Members
I have set the permission of the dropbox folder to "read & write access" for everyone.
So anyone is able to drop files (folders) in this area
Strangely, when somedy drop files (or folders) into the dropbox, i do not have acces to those files (folders), they are marked as locked.
Then i have to go to the system préférence - share - files - and refresh the folder permission of the dropbox to : apply to all included elements...
But whenever somebody drop files (or folder) into my dropbox, they are always marked as locked and i ahve to go again and again to redo the permissions
    for the dropbox folder.
Is there a way taht, definitely, files or folders droped into my dropbox are accesible to me ?
    Regards
    Alexandre.

    Dear Rodney
Thanks for your prompt reply, then (purely theological point of vue :o) i do not see the utility of a so called
    "Dropbox".
Never mind, i will get use to it, but i am not used to automation at all, neither folders actions.
I will get in to the search of a tuto to go further with your smart advice.
    regards
    Alexandre.

  • Locked Folders In Time Machine

So I recently sold my iMac with Snow Leapord and bought a new Macbook AIR with Lion. I backed everything up from my iMac using Time Machine onto an external hdd, and for fear of any cross pollination or installing unnessary files from my back up to my new computer, I am manually moving specific files I need from the "Latest Backup" Folder through the finder window.
I ran into a problem where some folders in the "Latest BAckup" folder are locked along with all of its content. I can view it, I just can't click and drag from the TM back up to my AIR hard drive.
Is there a way to unlock the folder and all of its content, or is there a better way to manualy move files form your TM back up to your new computers hdd?

I found software online like Disk Warrior($100) that allows you to rewrite permissions in a directory. My guess is that its a handy program to have.
I found all sorts of explanation using Terminal but wasnt comfortable going there.
Then I ran accross this and it worked. Albeit, its a little bit more tedios because you have to manually do it to each main folder. BUT IT WORKED!!!

  • Folder Lock Box is Gray when get info, so how do I lock folders?

I am logged in as an administrative user on an iBook G4. I'm creating new folders to organize the desktop. When I click on get info, the lock box is grayed out and not an option. How do I repair this or bypass this? Too many items to fit in dock and lock down for students to use easily.

    Hi deblan,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
There's no built in way to lock files/folders in OS X. You could use Disk Utility to create encrypted disk images and put the folders in there or you may find something on http://www.versiontracker.com or http://www.macupdate.com/ . Search for folder lock or lock folder.

  • Locked folders for 10.4.7 clients connecting to 10.3.9 server

I'm not sure if this is a 10.4.7 client issue, or a 10.3.9 server issue.
I recently upgraded several clients to 10.4.7. They connect to my server which is 10.3.9. When connecting via AFP from my 10.4.7 clients, several folders would display the "Lock" on the folder icon and I would not have permissions to add a new file to that folder. If I connected from a 10.4.5 or earlier client (I did not have any 10.4.6 clients), the folder would not appear to be locked and I would be able to create a new file in that folder. SMB connection works fine from 10.4.7 client. The folder did not appear to be locked from the 10.3.9 server when I logged on locally to the server.
The only way to resolve this was to connect remotely to the server from my 10.4.7 client and remove the check next to Locked in the GetInfo window of each folder that was affected, as long as I was the owner of the folder.
Any thoughts on way this may have occurred? I'm looking for a more global fix.

    Having the same issue here.
Working on a 10.3.9 fileserver, the 10.4.5 clients have no problems. The problem occured when updating to 10.4.6.
It has something to do with newer AppleShare components in 10.4.6.
Now we're using a work-around on the updated machines, it's described here as a solution for PhotoShop-problems, but it worked for our problem too.
    http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/333037.html
On our 10.4.5 machines we're still waiting with updating untill this issue is solved. (If it ever will be). Else i think we'll need to upgrade our server.

  • Hw 2 lock folders on 2700c

am havin problems to lock some private files on my phone

After creating a new user account, log in with that account and change the ownership of your files and folders to yourself, without any access for other accounts. From here, log in with the original account and change the permissions of the remaining folders so that other accounts don't have any access to them. These changes are made from the Ownership & Permissions section of the item's Get Info window, which is available from the File menu.
This method requires that the box to ignore ownership on the volume's Get Info window and that the disk is in a format which supports file permissions; disk formats such as MS-DOS and Mac OS Standard do not support permissions.

  • Quick help: Taking MBP in for repair, need to lock folders?

    hey guys,
I'm supposed to drop my MBP off at an Apple Reseller today to replace the disc drive. They want me to drop it off today, but the replacement drive won't be here until tomorrow. They asked that I provide my user password so they can login and get everything installed. It didn't sound like I had an option on whether or not to give them my password. So it looks like they'll be in my account, but I'm wondering if there's a way to lock my user folder and maybe Mail so that they can't go pilfering through my stuff. Any thoughts?
    Message was edited by: jabulani-jonny

It's not Apple staff; if it were, I wouldn't be going through the trouble. This is a stand-alone Apple reseller and the only reason I'm going through the trouble is that they wanted me to drop my laptop off on the afternoon before they actually receive the drive.
If they would have said, "we'll order the drive on Monday, it'll get here Tuesday morning, so drop off your laptop Tuesday at lunch and we can have it back to you that evening or Wednesday morning" I'd have no questions. However, they originally wanted me to leave it with them right then (on Saturday) when the drive wasn't going to be there 'til Tuesday, and impressed upon me that they needed it no later than Monday afternoon.
So, no I don't have any questions about Apple Staff, but when a stand-alone reseller wants my laptop 3 days before they can actually repair it... yeah, I've got questions about that.
Oh, and I did check out the Apimac application. It looks pretty cool, but, I think I'll just go with setting up a Repair Account and leave it at that. Thanks for the suggestions guys!
