InDesign missed to update a linked InCopy

Hello the following happened in a InDesign/InCopy-Workflow:
We have several Editors and a view Designers. Everyone is working with PC (Windows XP) InCopy CS2 and InDesign CS2. The Files (incx and indd) are stored on a centralized filestore, so no copying is done.
A Designer opened a Indesign file yesterday where several InCopyFiles are linked. This morning the editors made several changes on these InCopy Files.
This afternoon the designer again opened the InDesign-File updated the linked articles and checked an article out to make some fine tuning and checked it in again.
After that an editor regognized that his changes of this morning disappeared in the InCopy-File.
Investigations at backup (hourly snapshot) showed:
- that the InCopy had been stored with the content of the yesterday's InDesign-File.
- that the editors saved there documents in a correct way
Had anyone had such a problem before or does anyone know what the problem could be?
Normally it should be impossible, I think. Nothing the less it happend at least once. (Maybe it happened before, editors mentioned lost editings three times over the last two years, but there where no snapshot available anymore, so we thought the editor missed to save or something like that)

>Also, once InDesign crashes, it corrupts the file that was linked to the InDesign document that was being updated.
Are you absolutely sure that it's not the other way around - i.e., that the linked file gets corrupted, which then causes InDesign to crash? I ask this because we recently had a client with a similar sounding problem. At first we also thought that InDesign was corrupting the file, but eventually discovered that the file server on which the links resided had some bad RAM which was causing the PSD files to occasionally get corrupted.
Photoshop is apparently more tolerant of some corruptions than InDesign. When we'd open one of the problematic PSDs in Photoshop, we'd get a dialog box alerting us that there was corruption, but the file would open. InDesign, on the other hand, would crash VERY hard when placing or updating such a linked file.

  • Indesign crashes when updating a linked document

    This is a reproducible crash.
I have a indd file, several pages long with other embedded / placed indd documents inside.
When a linked file in the original documents has been changed, I naturally get a notice in the "links" tab. So far so good.
When I right-click and select "Edit original", the original document opens up and I get the usual notice if I like to update the changed link.
I select yes and save the document and close it to get back to doc I started with and then Indesign crashes.
Can this be fixed? It's extremely annoying.
    Tia.

Sphynx25 I have the exact problem and have been dealing with it for a couple years now, it's incredibly annoying. I wonder if there's some preference that would eliminate the document from automatically checking the links?? Seems this is what causes the crashes. I fiddled with what I could find in the preferences to no avail.
If you figure this one out please let me know, I'll do the same.

  • InDesign crashes when updating image links

InDesign has crashed a few other times with the same error details I have below, but the easiest way to replicate it over and over is when I try to re-link images.
The module that keeps crashing is "TEXT.RPLN"
I thought it was a font at first, but have run Adobe's font validator and everything said it was fine.
I have replaced the "InDesign Defaults" and "InDesign SavedData" files and that didn't help either.
Any other thoughts on why InDesign could be crashing?
It is becoming hard to get anything done, and I am thinking that I may just have to completely uninstall and then reinstall...

I did already replace the preference files.
It was actually happening on multiple InDesign installs on separate computers so I don't think it could have been preference related.
However, crossing my fingers, I think it is fixed now...
I created a copy of the original document and exported the .INDD document as a .IDML and re-opened/saved it as a new version.  By doing this, everything appears to be working now.  Don't know if it is just coincidence or if something in that process really fixed something.  I guess only time will tell.

  • InDesign crashing when updating associated InCopy files

We just upgraded to CS6 and Creative Cloud. When graphic designers are using InDesign and writers update the affiliated InCopy files, when the designers hit the Update button to pull in the updates, it crashes InDesign. Here is Pastebin link of a recent crash log.
    http://pastebin.com/Luc13HET
Designers are using Macs, writers are using PCs, we use DropBox to share the files, and re-placing the files seems to be ok, just not using the actual Update button. We've tried a ton of potential fixes, including resetting preferences, placing the file on to a new document, saving as IDML, exporting InCopy links separately.
    Anyone know of any fixes?

This is the same for our department and the workflow sounds very similar except we are using Stand alone installs and not creative cloud with both design and editoiral using PCs.
We have really experienced the problems when using previously designed templates from CS4 and are now having to go through systematcally and redo these from the ground up which seems to fix most but not all and is really annoying. Adobe of yet have not released a fix for this even thou there have been quite a few pastbin reports sent to them.
CS6 using Indesign and Incopy is a real disappointment considering all the excellent features under the hood.
See a long post here it might help

  • InDesign CC 2014 crashing when I try to update the links

InDesign CC 2014 isn't responding after I updated the links.
I replaced InDesign preferences, moved the missing links into the right file (instead of relinking).  The problem is still there and Indesign still not responding. I had to press CMD+ALT+ESC to force to quit.  Never had problems when I used InDesign CC and I'm experiencing a lot of trouble since I updated to CC 2014 version.
    I'm working on MAC.
Any clue how to solve this?

    Hi Laneway,
I can't reproduce that issue. Can we get more info? FAQ: What information should I provide when asking a question on this forum?

  • Update of links in Indesign CS6 when changing asset via drive

    Hi,
i am having an issue regarding the integration of Adobe AEM with InDesign CS6 via Drive:
I have a indd document that has a link to an image, both are stored on a Adobe AEM 5.6.1 server and accessed via Adobe Drive 5.0.2.
Now i tested the use case that the asset is changed and replaced on the AEM instance. I expect that InDesign tells me that the link has updated when I am opening the file the next time and the new asset is shown.
Unfortunatly this expectation occurs very unreliably and I managed to update the image only a few times.
However, if i link to an image on my local hard drive and i change it, InDesign reacts immediatly. So i think that Adobe Drive is the responsible part.
So my question is: does anyone have the same experience when integrating InDesign with AEM via Drive and does anyone know a best practise to reliably update images when the target of a link has changed?
    Best regards,
    Holger

While writing I made a mistake... It is true I could become aware of the Scorpio incompatibility.
I also tried the same identical procedure with a Seagate one. This disk and the same procedure was performed by some people I know on many MacBookPro Mid-2010 and everything was OK.
We do not understand why this problenm occurs.
Furthermore, If I installed the system on the broken HDD (that works, but sometimes it fails so badly and makes the system experience kernel panic) I could boot from it.
I guess it is because of the **** Apple FIrmware written on the label.
Is it possible that I cannot manage to boot from my new HDD because it has not a "special" feature on it that makes it compatible with apple??? Why making things so **** difficult my god a closer world like Apple one is impossible to imagine.
However Shootist007 thanks for your message, but given what I said I do not think is a cable problem.

  • Updating Excel Links In InDesign

Here is the scenario: I have imported Excel data in to an InDesign CS5.5 document. I then apply cell styles and paragraph styles to that table's cell(s). When the data in the Excel file is changed, I update the links in the InDesign 'Links' window just as one would do if an EPS, PSD or TIFF file had changed.
My problem is that when I update the linked data, I lose all of my text formatting. InDesign changes all the text within the linked cells to the 'basic' character style setting. I'm using six different paragraph and cell styles.
I've tried changing every aspect of the original import dialog box, every checkbox of cells tyles, paragraph styles, table styles, character styles, but I cannot avoid the reformatting of the text after it is updated. I can easily re-apply the paragraph styles to the tables and/or cells after the update of the Excel linked data, but I am trying to solve his problem in the most 'hands-free' way possible.
I've tried a demo of 'DataLinker' by Teacup Software and I couldn't get that to work. It seems as though it is really is meant for more high-end applications.
Does anyone have any ideas? If I can't get this to work within InDesign, I either have to watch for it to be remedied in CS6, or hire it out to someone who can script it.
TIA for any help at all.

    Mr. Levine,
Thanks so much! I did not have the paragrph styles set inside the cell styules. And when I did, eureka, it worked!
I should buy you lunch! short of that, you have my compliments and thank yous!
This is a BIG load off of my mind!

  • Distiller missing text and image links when saving to pdf

Not sure if anyone has experienced this issue before. Basically I create artwork 1up in indesign CS3 and print as a postscript file "print ready settings" then create a pdf through distiller 8.1.2. After this I then imposition the 1up PDF back into indesign (using the pdf as a link and then step and repeat it) then I print the new imposed artwork as postscript file again and distill it as a PDF ready for offset printing.
Most time this process works like a dream, but every now and then distiller doesn't want to process the file correctly and images and sometimes text have dropped off the final imposed PDF file. It doesnt notify me of any problems when distilling. As you can imagine working in the print industry this is VERY SCARY
As i am using a common 1up pdf link the imposition should be correct, (all the pdf linked images should be the same anyway) Is it a memory issue, or a bug in distiller perhaps.
Im running a Mac with OSX 10.4.11 with 2Gig of RAM.
If you would like to see a sample of the issue let me know.
Any help on this would be awesome.

    thanks for the replies,
Working in a pre-press environment we obviously prefer to print from pdf files (as opposed to using supplied native art). As a result I am always receiving pdf files from external clients who have saved their artwork from indesign to pdf format, so Im not sure what the real difference is between me imposing a supplied indesign/pdf files in indesign vs me imposing my own indesign/pdf files in indesign. (aprt from perhaps going through distiller twice)
i can see what your saying though and for years i have been using the cut and paste and step and repeat method but recently changed my workflow for a few reasons
    - I noticed that by printing a 1up pdf and relinking the file back into my indesign imposition the final imposed pdf was lower in size
    - if a client made a change to the artwork after imposing (which always happens) all i had to do was make the change, resave the pdf 1up link again and update the link and it did it for me and saved me from step and repeating all over again,
    - whenever the job was printed again in the future i could use the same procedure, resave as 1up pdf again and update the link.
    - plus i knew that if i was using the one link all my step and repeats would be exactly the same each time (and i didn't have to worry that a graphic that hadn't been selected/grouped correctly and would drop off when step and repeating)
.....and for sure it probably is a slightly longer way to impose a job for print but it saves me half the time on the next print run, and i can use my imposition file as a template for similar jobs also.
I have found the workflow i use works fine, apart from these rare hiccups which i can get around by resaving the pdf again anyway, but what Im really worried about is the times this error presents itself and doesn't notify me that a problem has occurred.

  • Update All Links Problem

Problem: Links will not stay updated in inDesign. After each time I place images, I get errors in pre-flight and then I must go to links panel and 'Update All Links' and pre-flight goes to green. After the next Place, the errors return. Preflight tells me the files have been modified, but they have not to the best of my knowledge.
Computer: 2012 MacPro (Mavericks, now Yosemite (same issue with both). Adobe CC updated. I have even uninstalled CC and reinstalled to try and fix. I do not use an external or network drive (for storing project files or links) and do not change folder location after starting a project.
Workflow: I use inDesign for creating photo books primarily. I am very organized with folders on my system and build all client work in the same place. I use one folder for each client book and I never move the folders. Inside the Client Book Folder, I create one folder called 'Images' (I have also experimented with calling it Links to test). I usually save the indd file in the root client folder outside of the Images folder.
Place: I primarily use Bridge to Place Images in inDesign (also use Cmd-D inDesign) to place images, same results either way.
The images have already been retouched, so I rarely leave inDesign to edit. I mainly layout complete books
Preferences: I have tried every combination in File Handling, Links, etc that I am aware of. I have only been a heavy inDesign user for about 2 years so I am expecting to feel stupid when I fix this problem, but I cannot figure it out on my own. I have no corruption in files or problems exporting, but I must constantly 'Update All Links'.
    Any suggestions?
    thanks,
    mike

I have never personally seen this happen, but it only takes one placed object to have changed for the InDesign preflight to indicate that the links are out of date. If you keep any of the asset open in another program, even if you aren't changing them, perhaps that is triggering this behavior.
Another possibility would be some type of continuous backup process that is marking the file attributes in some way that make InDesign see the file as modified. InDesign does not actually go “inside” the linked assets to see if they are different, but rather looks at modification dates of the linked files. And ironically, even if  a file is not actually changed, if it is opened for read/write in another program or possibly if  its backup metadata is changed, the file's modification date may reflect this. Just a thought to check out.

After installing InDesign CC 2014 Update my printer preset files are missing. Any way to recover them?

  • Any way to update lost links?

I have a file with many links in it. I have moved all of the links to various different folders on my hard drive. Is there any way for illustrator to AUTOMATICALLY search for and locate the linked files? It is a pain in the rumpola to have to manually search for and update each link. I should have organized the files better to begin with. It seems like AI should be able to search my hard drive and at least find all of the files with the same name of the file that it is missing... Then I would just be able to click on the proper file and update it. Currently, I have to type in the name of the file manuall and search my hard drive. Doing this for hundreds of files takes way too long. Does anyone feel may pain? LOL  Are there any other solutions? Mac 10.6.8 / CS6

Thanks for the tip, but I have many links spread across many different folders and drives. When those links get broken, it is a nightmare to try to locate and update all of the files. I would like for illustrator, or another program, to search through my hard drives and folders and find the missing links. However on my drives there may be mulitple files of the image with the same name. So it would be nice to be able to set a preference to find the either the MOST RECENT file, or to have a feature that would show me the various locations of linked files and allow me to pick one of those links. I realize that it might take some time for illustrator to search through everything to find the files, but it would be way easier than searching for each missing link manually. I don't want to have to type in the name of every file that I am looking for... I want the program to do that for me. Does that make sense? The program at willhouse.com does a good job, but doesn't have a preference to find the most recent file, or to allow me to find all links with the same name, and pick which link I want to use. Also, if you use wills program, then make sure you turn on all of your layers, and unlock all of your layers, before running his program.

  • Update Link, Update All Links, SHORTCUT?

Found a great way to work live, on the iPad, from the computer.
BUT, Adobe being Adobe, it's not perfect.
If I click to "Edit Original" and then edit, and save, I must switch back to InDesign before it actually does the update.
That's problem 1.  I'd really rather not have to make that switch back.  Any way around that?
Second, haivng switched back to InDesign to get that "live" update, if I [Command + Tab] back to the editing app, the "live" updating link is lost, so the next change I make I must go back to InDesign and use the TINY little button at the top of the screen to find the Update Link choice.
I'd much rather a Keyboard Shortcut for Update All Links, rather than having to deal with this.
Better yet, constant live updates would be epic.  Anyways to do this?

Argh, there's part one of your problem.  I don't want it... I was looking for it, assuming it would be already assigned, and not wanting to try to find how to assign one of my own if it already existed.  This was made harder, ironically, by the fact it was already assigned, so there was no hint to the shortcut when seeing the Update options.
    Rob Day wrote:

There's part two of your problem.  I don't want that for everyone, always, I just want it as a possible state, and to turn it on.

And there's part 3.  I don't want to remove their modified state.  I just want for an "auto-update".
Now, where's that scrpting reference?  Does scripting have access to things like auto-update of Links?  I'm guessing not, since there would be some possible security problems exposed by such a thing being able to be implemented by parties outside Adobe.

    Hi Lorenz,
Thanks for the Response. But we have not configured the  Payment Reporting functionality for any of our Treasury products.
However the issue has got resolved as the configuration settings were missing in :

  • InDesign Hyperlinks not updating when book is packaged

We create a 220 page product catalogue using an InDesign book.
The book contains about 40 documents for each section and the contents page uses Hyperlinks to jump to the sections and back to the contents when exported to PDF.
    All of this works perfectly.
We then create a second version of this book by simply packaging the book (so we can reprice for the NZ market)
When we package the InDesign Book to create the second version of the catalogue, the Hyperlinks don't update to link to the version 2 documents.
So after you have packaged version 2 and you open the contents document and view the Hyperlinks window, all of the hyperlinks are there, but when you Click To Open Destination it opens the version 1 document?
We then need to manually go through and relink all of he hyperlinks.
I would expect the hyperlinks would update in the same way Links do after packaging?

Assuming that you have correct set-up for your statutory area, there might be an error for your statutory posting. Please run ASKBN to know the error. This will help to identify how to resolve your problem.
    Thanks!

I will give the process that I followed (as you specified) now:
    1. I deleted the Source System Assignment for the Infosource.
    2. Next went to Source Systems. Right click on source system and replicate it.
    3. Select the InfoSoucre and assign the Data Source.
    4. Here I automatically got the Field(ZZMBGBTR).
    5. I added the field in the Communication Structure. and then assigned the Transfer Rules.  Next activated the InfoSource.NExt checked the InfoCube for the KeyFigure. That InfoObject ZQTY is available.
    6. I activated the InfoCube. Right Click and select Create Update Rules. Still I didnt got that InfoObject.
