InDesign - need a "Fix my Corrupted File" Upload Service

There are frequently posts on the forum for people who have corrupted INDD files. This means lost work and frustrated InDesign users.
The Indesign team should offer a "Fix my File" upload link to its customers.
For each corrupted file, you will help a customer, and in the process, hopefully improve the overall stability of the product (which has issues) and benefit everyone...
Adobe: If you are afraid that you will be swamped with requests to "Fix my File", then you should probably just get out of the SW business now...

Zak Williamson wrote: "If the documents are fundamentally corrupt in some way, theres no way to repair them." and then later "As I mentioned to Casey, it's rarely possible to repair a truly corrupt document"
I definitely don't want this to sound like a flame or a whine, but I find that statement quite flabbergasting. Somebody at Adobe must understand the format of an InDesign file well enough to be able to edit out the specific element that is causing InDesign to complain about the document. I do file repair for another company (www.qsatoolworks.com) whose file format is probably more complex than an InDesign file. In over 10 years I've only had 1 or 2 files I could not repair at least to the point of recovering the textual data.
What led me to this forum is that a customer contacted me to help them recover an InDesign file. They just migrated from a PowerMac G4 with CS2 to a Mac Pro with CS3 and a few of their files won't open. ("ID may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing, or the file may be open in another application.")
We have tried them on another Mac with CS2, and they won't open there either. "Something" must have gone wrong when the files were transferred to the new Mac.
(Naturally, the old hard drive has already been reformatted.)
Knowing what I do about file formats (but understanding that my knowledge is nearly worthless in an InDesign file) I have to assume an InDesign file contains an object map with pointers to the various objects in the document. The idea of telling the customer "your 32 page booklet is lost" when the problem could simply be a screwed up pointer is horrifying to me.
Here at QSA ToolWorks we charge $120/hour for recovery service, success or failure. We've saved lots of people from their own recklessness, and created a passionate user base in the process. We've made our product more reliable (and fixed some bugs) based on the knowledge gained through file repair; Adobe could do the same, but if they don't want to provide such a service, perhaps they should consider training third parties to do it.
I'd like to address one other comment above. Harbs wrote "I've been lead to believe that Adobe has utilities (which they use internally) to analyze and possibly fix corrupted files." Of course, I don't know whether Adobe has such utilities, but I suspect they don't. Because I can do Helix database repairs, people likewise assume I have "special utilities" that can fix corrupted files. (We've even been accused of keeping them secret so we can use file repair as a source of revenue!) I don't. What I do have is a deep understanding of the file format. Beyond that, a file editor and a couple of AppleScripts I wrote to display the object fields in a human-readable format are all the 'special' tools I have. If Adobe has any sort of tools for analyzing files, I suspect they are much the same. In other words, without extensive internal knowledge, they are worthless.

You can but it will not fix anything - you have a corrupted library = not an corrupted application
Backup your iPHoto library, depress the option and command keys, launch iPhoto and ftom the resulting first aid window rebuild your database

  • Fix for Corrupt File That Prevents Publish

Since last night I've been getting an error when trying to publish my site. The error is pointing to one of the background images in the template stating that the disk may be corrupt or that I don't have access rights or something like that. I couldn't seem to figure out how to fix this - I even overwrote the image file hoping to fix it, but nothing worked. I figured I'd reboot in the morning and see if the system automagically would clear it up.
Well funny thing... I use Super Duper for my backup application and it choked last night on the very same file that iWeb was. However, Super Duper gave me the actual path of the corrupt file.
    | 04:30:38 AM | Error | SDCopy: FTS_NS error for item: '/Users/suzanne/Library/Application Support/iWeb/Domain.sites/rptilev6-2.jpg' err: 22, Invalid argument
This seems to be some kind of secondary cache of images that iWeb uses to upload to .MAC. I opened up that folder, replaced the file with a new version and everything worked again.

Had the same problem, but with music only. Thank you for the information

  • Fixing a corrupted file

I seem to have a corrupted file. It takes 4 or 5 seconds for anything to appear when you try to type anything in and the panels take 5 or 6 seconds to appear when you change a tool. I've been working in other documents with no problem, it is just this one book.
I've tried exporting it out to an IDML file and reopening it, but it doesn't help.
Next I tried exporting it out to an ID Tagged Text file and placing that with the Shift key to autoflow it in and that seemed to work as far as the typing problem, but none of the graphic links imported and this is a 6 chapter book with hundreds of graphics!
Is there another way to import the content with the links into a new document that I am missing? (or a way to fix the original file?)
    CS6, XP
    Thanks in advance.
    Chris

    Hey Wright,
You might want to try steps in http://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/kb/troubleshoot-damaged-indesign-documents.html
Usually these sort of errors come down to one swatch or a element in the document. Now it might be just as simple as creating a new book and adding back the document. Or as difficult as a corupt text frame or font in the document.
For your question about movung content you could try just moving pages from one document to another new document abd checking if that helps.

  • Need Help Opening a Corrupted File in MS Office Word 2007.

I use Microsoft Office Word 2007. I need help in opening a corrupted file. I tried to open but am getting messages: "cannot be opened", "unreadable content", "do you want to recover contents?" "Do you want to search
    for a converter?"
Anyone have any ideas on how I can get this file to open? :/
    Thank you,
    Chuck in California

    From Microsoft Documentation:-
If a file has been damaged and you cannot open it by normal means, you may be able to recover its content by using the Open and Repair
    feature.
    Click the
    Microsoft Office Button
Browse to the file that you want to recover, and click it (do not double-click it).
Click the arrow next to the
Open button, and then click Open and Repair.

  • InDesign CS4 - saved gradient got corrupted, file becames unreadable.

    Hi all.
I've just got the new CS4 suite a couple of days ago.
All is well installed, been working like crazy for almost 2 days straight, over CS2 files that I had before.
Then I started a brand new document (not imported from older versions), designed it, and it crashed after I've applyed a simple gradient to a frame.
After restarting InDesign CS4, it recovered the file, but the frame with the gradient was Black, and a warning appeared saying the file appears to be corrupted.
"Saving as..." with a new name didn't helped either, seems like every file saved from that one were corrupted.
Scanned the hard drive for bad sectors, all is ok.
The only solution I've got was to:
    open the corrupted file
    select what I could
    "copy" to memory
    close the file
create a new document with similar settings
    paste and adjust
start all over again for every page and layer
Can someone help, so this doesn't happen again?
Oh, and it also crashed again after creating some colors. On Windows Task Manager, the executable was still there, "eating" about 49% CPU.
Could this have something to do with multi-core? This machine has a dual-core, but others have quads. This is being run over Windows XP Professional SP3, 3Gb Ram.
I couldn't replicate the error yet.
    Kind regards,
    Bruno Mateus

    Hi Peter,
Thanks for the response. I think you nailed it. I had actually updated all the cross references that generated errors, but a few crept through (no errors generated) that referenced a paragraph in the document I copied from. I replaced these with the references in the current document and this solved it. The old document was also on a remote disk, so I'm sure this made matters worse. In addition, I found links to illustrator files on the remote disk. I also copied these files to the local disk and updated all the links (actually I did this first and it made very little difference, it was really the cross references that were the issue).
    Thanks,
    Anthony

It would be really inconvienient to have to make a new profile. Thanks for any help!

It is possible that your security software (firewall, anti-virus) blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full, unrestricted, access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

  • Need some information for jar files upload in Oracle

    Hi,
I am developing some java stored procedures which requires uploading about 10-15 jar files or may be more, to the oracle database. One way is to use loadjava and oracle stores classes in those jar files as separate java classes. Is there a way that I can put these jar files somewhere in the file systems, configure some oracle parameter, restart the database and still I am able to use them from my java stored procedures. This will be some kind of a dropin folder for jars. Any information on this will be helpfule.
    Thanks

  • Fixing the corrupt file created when final cut crashes during a capture...

Hi, occasionally whilst I'm capturing from Digi Beta my G5 will crash on the end of the capture (the beach ball will just keep spinning until I have to force quit).
When I check the file I was capturing in my Capture Scratch it comes up as a huge file (usually around 700gb) with a '-av' added to the end of it's file name.
When I remove the -av, the file goes back to its original size but Quicktime player or Final Cut don't recognise it to open (though it does keep its Quicktime icon).
Usually I just delete this file and re-capture it but I'm just wondering if there's any way of fixing the file to save time?
    Thanks,
    Alex

IIRC, the file is incomplete, it's lacking the complete header information. Have you tried appending .mov to the file? Let us know how that works.

  • Is it possible to edit file metadata?   I need to fix a Quicken file.

After my first ever hard drive crash, I got my data back from a recovery service. (My last Time Machine backup was from March, but that's another topic.) Using mdls I can see that my Quicken data file now has question marks where the creator code and file type should be. Quicken thinks it is a plain text file, so it won't open.
Is there some way to replace the incorrect metadata on the file? This is Quicken 2002 by the way.
    Thanks for your help.

Thanks! SetFile does exactly what I wanted.
Drag and drop didn't work because Quicken adamantly refused to accept what it considered a plain text file. That's why I wanted to restore the file type back to Quicken data.
Alas, Quicken now valiantly tries to open the file but can't due to what it calls a damaged resource map. (Or maybe a missing resource file?)
Nevertheless - thanks for your help!

  • I seem to have caought some kind of virus. Firefox says it cannot find the server for whatever site I have designated. I deleted and reinstalled to fix any corrupt files but the problem persists. Firefox simply does not work.

It will only open the firefox opening window, nothing else. If I put in my home page, Yahoo, it says it can't find the server. Same for any other URL. I fully deleted Firefox, including the FireFox folder in applications, and reinstalled to no avail.

{Ctrl + P} and select your printer in the Printer - Name box near the top of that window.
