Indesign Noob

Hey guys,  I am trying to make an Indesign document cosisting of for images, that I dragged off a site and into Indesign using my Imac.  (which makes working with some of this stuff super simply compared to a PC)
But when I exported the file into a jpeg, black lines appeared within the image.    I have come to the conclusion that it has to be the page break showing its face on my image, but how and why is beyond me. This is the image. Please hlep. if you need any more info please let me know.

Changing the format of the images or saving and placing, rather than dragging from your browser, will have no effect of that line. The line indicates the division between two pages in a spread. You can eliminate the line by making your page size the same as the spread, ie: twice as wide and not using facing pages. Still, best practice is to always save your graphics and place them in InDesign. If you ever edit an image, then DO NOT save as JPEG. Use TIF or PSD.
Why are you exporting to JPEG? Is a JPEG image your intended final image format? If so, Illustrator or Photoshop would be much better for this. If you’re trying to design for print, then again, what's with the JPEG image? A PDF is a much better choice for producing a lo-res proof. We can help better if you tell us what you are hoping to produce.

  • InDesign CS4 Synchro Crash

    Hello, I'm using InDesign CS4 (latest update) on a WindowsXP Pro 64-bit system.  When I try to synchronize styles between documents in a book, InDesign consistently crashes.  I get an Application Error with atrocious grammar stating: "The exception unknown software exception (0x40000015) occurred in the application at location 0x1486b989."  What's interesting is that, if I use a specific document ("Chapter 2") as the source of styles, it doesn't crash.  If I use any other document (e.g., "Chapter 4") as the source, it does crash.
    Any ideas on what could be causing this?

    So I reformatted my HDD and installed Windows 7 64-bit.  I've reinstalled InDesign and all fonts.  I also searched through all of the documents in the book and eliminated any unused fonts.  I put the same documents in a new book and tried synchro, and that crashed InDesign too.  So it's not the book itself, I guess.  It must be something in one or more of the documents.  I think it's the document called "Chapter01," because I can sync between Chapter00 and Chapter 02, Chapter 02 and Chapter 03, etc.  Any sync involving Chapter01 crashes the computer.  I'm attaching it just in case it helps.
    There are no character styles showing in any of the documents.  The paragraphs styles are all styles that I've created myself and use one of two opentype fonts and a truetype one.  I tried deleting all instances of the truetype font in case that was causing the problem, but it still crashed on syncro.  Can styles be hidden somehow and not show up in the panel?  I don't know how to search for them in that case.
    I don't know what an "adobefntXX.lst" file is supposed to do. There are a bunch on my computer in the Acrobat, InDesign, and various font and settings folders.  If one or more of them is corrupted, I don't know what to do about it.  Reinstall it from somewhere?  In any case, I'm thinking maybe that's not the problem, because all the chapters have the same 3 fonts, and only Chapter01 causes a crash.
    Unfortunately, synchro is still causing a crash in InDesign.  What steps should I take, do you think?  Please keep in mind that you're talking to an InDesign noob, so overexplainng is helpful.
    Thanks again!

  • Using Indesign's effects on photos vs doing it in Photoshop

    Heya,
    hope someone can help me with this. I'm still an Indesign noob.
    I'm working on a magazine that will be printed through an Offset printer. There are several images that will look like this: http://drop.brizk.com/wWyt
    What I'm doing here is apply a blending mode to an image that has a coloured layer in the background.
    My question is whether it is better to do this entirely in Photoshop, save the file and place it into Indesign OR whether I should just place the normal photo and use Indesigns effect/blending mode feature to apply this effect to it. On screen it looks very similar, my (cheap) laser printer that I use for basic proofing shows slightly different results with each method.
    I'm reusing the colour as fill-colour for several other elements in the Indesign file, so I'm unsure whether I should keep everything internal (in Indesign) or whether I should outsource the effects to Photoshop and just do basic stuff in Indesign.
    Are there any pros/cons with either method? One apparent one is that Indesign runs faster/smoother if it doesn't have to apply the effects itself.
    Cheers
    Kai

    Is this going to be a two colour job? Or is it full colour? Do you need spots? Is it CMYK + spot colour?
    InDesign can certainly handle it, so if it cuts a step out of the process then that's great. You can fill the box with a colour - then you can get teh Graphic to a blending mode - you do this by selecting the graphic with the White Arrow tool.
    Depends on what the goal is, phothshop has a lot more control over it. Might be faster to setup an Action in photoshop and then place all the images. Or it might be faster settting up an Object Style in InDesign.

  • Real Noob Question: Indesign to MS Word

    I have been trying to make a logo and document/letterhead for some forms etc and a friend suggested Indesign was the way to go and helped get me started.
    I have previously created the forms etc that I need to use in MS Word.
    What I want to do is to export the carefully crafted logo and header I have created in Indesign as a blank template for MS Word so that I can use this template to write letters, to add the forms and tables I have already created into it so that it will have my logo on the top of the page etc.
    Is there any way to do this please?
    I would need to both have this document available to send to ptinters [which I accept would be very easy as I could export as a pdf] but also to email colleagues so that they have forms which they can fill in the blanks [they will not have Indesign or Acrobat pro etc] and also so that I can write letters with this logo on top.
    Is there any easy way I can achieve this please?
    Thanks

    The very simplest method? Send them the PDF. Preprint the letterhead on a good color printer in batches of 5-50 or whatever. Then feed that stock to the printer just as you would offset-printed letterhead stock.
    Getting a graphical layout into Word from ANY source is a real PITA. Word just does not handle graphics well. If you insist, I'd export the critical parts of the layout to JPEG and import and position those in a Word template.

  • Noobie Mistake? Export to pdf InDesign Server CS3

    Hi,
    I'm trying to export my open document on InDesign Server CS3 to pdf, but it isn't working.
    I can open, make changes and save, but when it comes to exporting it gives an error:
    "An exception occurred when executing a COM method.
    The cause of this exception was that: AutomationException: 0x0 - The specified object does not support the desired export format. in 'C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS3 Server\InDesignServer.exe'."
    Here is my code below. I've tried the export code for pdf with inverted comma's as well, no luck. All the sample scripts do it in this fashion, am I missing something?
    Any help much appreciated.
    myInDesignServer = CreateObject("COM", "InDesignServer.Application.CS3");
    myDocument = myInDesignServer.Open("C:\artwork\my_file.indd");
    myDocument.Export(1952403524, "C:\artwork\my_pdf.pdf");
    myDocument.close();

    Hello Brett,
    I have done some COM programming with IndesignServer CS3 using C#, here is is the way I do a pdf export:
    doc.Export(idExportFormat.idPDFType, @"C:\indesignTestFile.pdf", false, "[High Quality Print]", "Some Comment", true);
    Notice the first argument: the enumeration which specifies the file type and the fourth argument which is the name of an Adobe Pdf Preset. This particular preset should already be installed on your CS3 server. You cant export to a pdf without using an export preset.
    I hope this was helpful, Im no expert myself.

  • [JS InDesign CS3] Style groups, begone! (or: How do I take paragraph and character styles out of style groups?)

    Sorry for this question (and my terrible English, by the way), I'm a javascript noob and I know when I've reached my limits.
    Well, I'm trying to take a set of paragraph and character styles out of the style groups they are placed in, in hundreds of InDesign documents (that cannot be treated as a book). As far as I've tried (thanks to the invaluable help of previous posts in this forum) I've been able to move a style into a group and change it's position inside the group, inside the root level or even between groups. But it doesn't matter how I try, I don't know which move reference should I try in case I want to take every style out of their style group and place them after their original group folder, at the [Root] style level .
    I have tried:
    var doc=app.activeDocument;
    var pGroups=doc.paragraphStyleGroups;
    for (i=pGroups.length-1; i>=0; i--){
         var pStylesInGroup=pGroups[i].paragraphStyles;
         for (j=pStylesInGroup.length-1; j>=0; j--){
    // Here I am, trying to move a style outside the folder that contains it, and failing miserably.
              pStylesInGroup[j].move (LocationOptions.after, pGroups[i]);
    It didn't work, the script sent an invalid parameter value in the reference field, so I cant use the group folder itself as reference.
    Tried other (obviously wrong) solutions, like use the first available style as reference. Therefore, my second script was
    var doc=app.activeDocument;
    var pStyles=doc.allParagraphStyles;
    var pGroups=doc.paragraphStyleGroups;
    for (i=pGroups.length-1; i>=0; i--){
         var pStylesInGroup=pGroups[i].paragraphStyles;
         for (j=pStylesInGroup.length-1; j>=0; j--){
    // Now I try placing the styles after the [Basic Paragraph], that is, the second paragraph style in the document style list
              pStylesInGroup[j].move (LocationOptions.after, pStyles[1]);
    It didn't work either, another invalid parameter in the reference field. Similar results with my other attempts (I even tried "[Root]" as literal with similar luck).
    So, my question is: Which command (or script, in case my whole approach is utterly wrong) should I use to achieve my goal?
    Thanks in advance to whoever decides to spend more than a minute thinking about my humble worries, and my apologies for shamelessly ripping some of your lines of code for my purposes.

    Okay, tried a few things and got really weird results!
    1. You can move a style around inside its group.
    2. You can move a style out of a group "to" another, but it will appear 'inside' that style. I got my test style as a sub-item of [Basic Paragraph], using index #1. With index #0 ([No Paragraph Style]) InDesign crashed.
    3. You can duplicate the style, but then you get a copy in the same group. Still no luck.
    4. Finally! What is the parent of a paragraph style?
    Document | Application | ParagraphStyleGroup
    "Application" is easy -- that's when you make a style global. So what's the difference between 'Document' and 'paragraphStyleGroup'? Simple -- well, when you finally get it...
    pStylesInGroup[j].move (LocationOptions.AT_END, doc);
    moves the style out of the group and to the end of the list in the document. I don't think it's possible to move it directly to a specific position into the main style list -- you first have to move it out of a group, then move it around in its own list.
    Fortunately, it returns its new position as a ParagraphStyle again, so if needed, you can use
    newStyle = pStylesInGroup[j].move (LocationOptions.AT_END, doc);
    newStyle.move (LocationOptions.AFTER, pStyles[1]);
    -- I didn't really try that out, but it should work.

  • Adobe Edge .OAM Animation Not Working In ePub Created In InDesign CC

    Hello,
    I am trying to create an ePub that contains video and animations.
    Using Adobe Edge Animation CC, I created an animated chart.  When I tested by previewing it in my browser it worked fine.  I then exported the animation as an .OAM file.
    In InDesign CC, I created my document, imported a .MP4 video and the .OAM animation.  When I test it using the Folio Preview, the video works but the animation does not.  The animation instead acts more like a static image.  When I click on it, nothing happens.  Ideally, the animation should occur once the page is loaded (but I can settle for the animation to happen once clicked).
    Also, I would like to create an Interactive PDF and .MOBI version of this document.  I am a complete noob to this, so any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

    Thank you Steve.  I am running InDesign CC 9.2.  I exported an EPUB 3 file and tested it using Firefox's EPUBReader (Since I am experiencing an issue with Readium).  The video is working fine, but the .OAM animated chart does not appear at all.  Do you know what could be causing the .OAM animation not to appear?  Below are some screenshot I grabbed.
    This is how the file looks in InDesign CC.  Circled is the .OAM animation.
    Below is how it looks in EPUBReader.  The .OAM animated chart is missing. (The layout has changed also, but please consider that this is my first ePub that I am creating.  This is all new to me.)

  • InDesign Newbie in need of assistance

    Hi,
    I hope I am in the right place.
    I need to produce a book, and am looking for a bit of guidance.
    The templates have been created in Photoshop. I will also need to include photos and text and am wondering I am better of (for quality purposes) adding the text and photo's in InDesign or Photoshop.
    Thanks
    B

    ALWAYS include your version of InDesign and your OS in your post. We cannot help you if we don’t know what tools you have available. ALWAYS include some hint of your problem in your subject line. “InDesign Newbie in need of assistance” tells us nothing, since this forum is for InDesign users (noobs and otherwise) in need of assistance.
    Use InDesign. If your book has more than one page, has any text in it, has anything bleeding (printing to the edge of the page), or will be printed professionally, then InDesign wins over Photoshop in a first round knock out.
    Import the photos without text, then add the text in InDesign. You can place the photos with the text so you can see how to format and position the text in InDesign, then hide the text layers in the Photoshop file by right-clicking on the image in InDesign and selecting Object Layer Options.

  • InDesign CC 2014 TOC Issue

    Forgive me in advance if this is a simple NOOB question that would be fixed with a simple checking or unchecking of a tick box somewhere.
    Being new to InDesign, I've got my document all laid out nicely and looking pretty schmick. I've even got the TOC looking how I want... mostly.
    Now, perhaps this is a design limitation, or like I said, a on/off switch, but I have set up my paragraphs in 3 levels for recognition in the TOC, and all looks good, except one header (lvl 2) starts mid-page, with a level 3 heading (leftover from the previous level 2 sequence) at the top of the page.
    Now, by rights, the level 3 heading at the top of the page should appear before the level 2 heading half way down, when the TOC is updated, but alas, the L3 heading appears under the L2 heading in the TOC.
    The question begs, am I limited to only being allowed to start a new L2 on a new page???

    I don't think there's any way to sort paragraphs other than by story and position on the page when you sort a TOC in page order. When sorting by levels is possible (alphabetical sort), Level 1 is the top level and appears before Level 2, and so on.
    Seems to me you re expecting the normal behavior -- your level 3 heading is above the level 2 on the page and you want it to appear before it in the TOC -- so what are you doing that keeps this from happening? Do you have one story, or multiple threads, on this page? Screen shots of the page, the TOC dialog, and the TOC might help.

  • Indesign cs5.5 keeps crashing when i place an image

    I used a trial
    version of indesign and this was a constant issue....crashing when placing images, i thought it was because i was running a trial version.
    I went out and bought a copy and registered it and to my horror the crashing is just as bad, it only seems to happen when i place an image, working in text is fine no crashing. I'm operating on windows vista with HP pavillion dv9000 3 gig ram 300gig HD
    is there a patch that can be used ? i would really appreciate some assistance, i'm a bit of a noobie to indesign so please make it noobie proof.

    At this point it's pretty hard to tell if the problem is the images or ID, but I suspect it's a bad install.
    I would run add/remove programs and uninstall ID, then run the clean script: Resolve installation problems with CS5 Cleaner Tool to remove any leftover traces.
    Run MSconfig and turn off unnecessary startup programs and services, especially antivirus and spyware scanners, firewalls, messenger programs, iTunes, and browser helpers and toolbars, then reboot in the modified startup condition. Be sure you are logged in as an administrator and reinistall. Run MS config to restore to normal startup and reboot.
    Launch ID, then go to Help > Updates... to get the patch.

  • Noob Question 2: Creating a Pin-hole/Swiss Cheese effect?

    Is there a built-in effect in InDesign which will create 'pin-holes' in an ellipse or rectangle? If not, can you recommend how to do this, perhaps in conjunction with PS? (A tool I am also a noob at.)
    TIA,
    ---JC

    This is better done in Illustrator with its Eraser tool which gives you the advantage of giving it a random quality to it and you can give it a dimension as well if you need to but if you don't you can still do so if you need a more controlled look that can be done in either application using the path finder.
    What you get using the transform to move and duplicate the circles and the pathfinder to minus front in either  program. In Illustrator you ca givve it a 3D effect.
    this takes a few seconds.

  • Auto-generated links exported from InDesign do not work in tablet apps

    Hyperlinks automatically detected and exported from InDesign CS6 8.0.1 as a PDF work fine on the desktop version of Acrobat Reader. However, on the iPad version of Adobe Reader as well as iBooks and GoodReader, these links are completely ignored, meaning they are just text.
    On the other hand, if I was to manually set the hyperlink in InDesign or Acrobat, the link works fine.
    It would be extremely tedious and time consuming to manually reset hundreds of hyperlinks in my documents since InDesign use to handle this correctly.
    Is this a bug? If so, it's pretty serious and should be Adobe's priority to fix since millions of people read documents on tablet devices.

    No, it's a Feature of Acrobat and reader that they attempt to create links from anything that "looks like" a URL. Other readers lack the feature.
    It's not good practice to depend on this in any case as it's hardly foolproof even in Acrobat. Links that break across lines, for example, will not be properly recognized.

  • Text Wrap options not showing in InDesign CS3

    Using InDesign CS3 on a Mac 10.4.  I've had this problem for a couple of months now and it's getting past the point of annoying.  When I open my text wrap options pallete it's blank even when I expand options.  I can see the text wrap icons in my header panel, but I no longer have options to change the right/left/top/bottom margins.  Just a general "add wrap" and "remove wrap".  Is there any way I can get my pallete back?  I've tried defaulting my tools, but still it does not show up.  I don't know what to do to get it back.

    Did you try resetting preferences? While pressing Shift+Option+Command+Control, start InDesign. Click Yes when asked if you want to delete preference files. If you don't get the message about deleting preferences, you weren't fast enough.

  • Re: i can't start up indesign cc each time it says it has to close the program on start-up. I have uninstalled and reinstalled and have rebooted my machine seeveral times and it still doesn't work.

    How do you create another user account?
    I am having a similar problem - have deleted preferences which did not  solve - this is since I  installed the latest update - it is very slow - and  cannot close - says background task running  - but when I open background task  window - shows nothing - only way to close is to use Windows task manager and end program
    mouse movements are delayed - it takes forever to do anything
    Windows 7 Pro
    Intel CPU - 2.93 Ghz
    Ram - 8 Gb
    AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series

    My problem is really weird - ID CC 2014 with the latest update  can become very slow - at first it was only when I had other applications going [especially Photoshop] - but  for the last week it has  been every time I try to use it - even with no other app running.
    Mouse movements are delayed, any selection takes forever to take effect. When closing - I sometimes get message saying background task is running [but not every time]
    new user account didn't help, deleting preferences neither .
    I had several ID files open -closed those - crashed ID - rebooted - opened  totally different files - same problem.
    However - I have just deleted the file Recovery Data  in the users/user name/appdata/local/adobe/indesign/version 10.0/en_US/Caches/InDesign REcovery- and that seems to have temporarily fixed the issue as ID is behaving normally now.  [I guess that 's the same as  creating another user account]

  • InDesign crashes every time you double click to open an .indd file on Windows system

    InDesign crashes every single time you double click to open an InDesign file and has done so since replacement of the original version of InDesign introduced in the Creative Cloud launch.  Does anyone else have this problem?  I'd say it was unique to my system if I hadn't experienced the issue repeatedly on several different systems now.  You have to relaunch InDesign which then opens the file from recovery, so it saw the file you tried to launch in the first place.  This leads me to believe the problem lies with the file association registry of InDesign inside Windows systems.  I find it unbelievable that this problem still exists and remains unreported and that a solution hasn't been implemented by Adobe to rectify the issue.
    The double click is a fundamental tenant of opening files on a Windows system in the same way a single click is on a Mac.  Does InDesign crash ever time a Mac user clicks to open their files, I think not.
    Anyone got any ideas other than the obvious which is Adobe actually got their figure out and fixed it.
    Cheers,
    Pat Doyle

    Hi Michael,
    I'll give it a go.  Don't really like messing with the registry on Windows boxes.  Yes you can do it, but it can end up being a case of the operation was a success, but the patient died.
    Just was rather hoping someone else had already experienced this problem and posted the registry tweak.  Didn't want spend hours reinventing the wheel.  Not because I'm lazy, but I have so many demands on my time that resolving a minor issue that effects me only seems like it should be pretty low priority.
    The system I'm using is brand new, but the problem seems to have followed me regardless which may indicate that it is seated in my synchronization information somehow.  Really don't know how that could happen as I'm not an Adobe engineer or have the remotest idea where to even start looking.  So I think I'll mark your suggestion as the "Answer" and just learn to live with it.
    Windows eh! Can't live with - can't live without it.  I'm sure Mac can be just as temperamental. Just have to chalk this one up as being just another ghost in the machine.
    Thanks for all the advice you have kindly offered, much appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Pat Doyle
