InDesign Object Effects

I have a grayscale image in InDesign. I placed a text frame on top it and try to apply an effect and it is tinting my image when I apply the effect. What is going on? I also want to "ghost" the text frame and when I apply "paper" color to it, I can't tint it, the "tint" option is grayed out so I can't choose it.

White lines around texts with object effects applied

I am having a persistent problem with InDesign's output of PDFs when I have applied object effects to text boxes.
When I use an effect—such as emboss (shown in samples) or outer glow—on a text box, the PDF renders it with white lines around the text boxes (sometimes with more than one).
See the attached samples; the boxes are clearly visible with a 3rd party PDF viewer, such as Skim; less so with Acrobat Pro, but still there. It's there when I open the PDF in Photoshop, as well.
I've tried playing with transparency flattening settings, and with merging the layers into a single layer. No help.
The sample shown has an emboss effect applied, transparency flattening set to high resolution (ignoring style overrides), and a single merged layer.

My printer requires that I use the PDF/X-1a:2001 standard for PDF export, which means that it must be Acrobat 4 or later compatibility.
Also: I don't see how to NOT flatten, when exporting PDF for print; the options for flattening are "low resolution," "medium resolution," or "high resolution"—but there is not an option to NOT flatten. Do you know a work-around for this?

Change Object Effects Units of Measurement?

I just worked on an Indesign file I didn't create and opened the object effects window. I saw all the measurements for setting a drop shadow were in pixels instead of inches, which I believe is the default.
Where in the preference can I change the units of measurement for these object effects? Thank you.

Change unit of measure in Preferences, by right-clicking on the ruler intersection, or with a KB shortcut (Command-Option-Shift-U on Mac).

InDesign Transparency Effects - Problems with Image Quality and File Size

Hello,
We are experiencing new problems exporting InDesign files to PDF.
To summarize, though our largest workflow is to create files for offset printing, we also deliver our work to PDF for mounting on a website so our clients can download directly from the web. Our new problem is Transparency Effects, and creating a PDF that will both have a high quality (or resolution), and be a small file size.
We are working with multiple page documents (24 to 48 pages), and would very much like to work with InDesign Transparency Effects. However, after spending much time testing a variety of PDF types, we are finding there is a radical difference between quality and file size. I was curious if anyone has had these problems, and if there is a simple answer. InDesign is an incredible program that allows us to design on the fly with Transparency Effects, but, if we are going to experience these problems, we will have to eliminate these wonderful tools.
Can you help me or lead me to information online that will help.

Export presentation from my imac to my ipad with the object effect transitions

Well i've made a presentation, took me a few days to make and somehow i forgot that the only way i can present it is through my ipad, and is there a way i can export my presentation whilst not losing the object effect transitions???
i've tried making it into a video and sending it to my ipad but that doesn't work

You might get a quicker/better response in the iWork for iPad forum. Not all of us here have used the iPad and know what is compatible and what is not.

InDesign Object Libraries and DPS

Hello,
I'm familiar with InDesign object libraries' capability to make easily reusable objects and elements. What I'm wondering: if I create objects and elements in a Library to be reused across various pages and across multiple articles in my portfolio, will DPS read these multiple instances as ONE object when it comes time to publish?
What I am trying to achieve is ultimately a lower file download size of my app. For example, if I create a multistate object, is it possible, through Object Libraries, to use this object in several places within my folio and have it count as just one object in terms of file size?

No. Good ways to manage file size is to use PDF as your folio file format, to avoid embedding videos, and to avoid full-page multi-state objects.

Indesign Object Coordinates

I want to know about indesign object coordinates.
In .indd file coordinates take 32 byte for any coordinate for top, left, bottom, right or (x, y, width, height).
How calculate x and y value from these 8-8 byte.It contain floting value but not follow IEEE standered.
What format use to store coordinate in indesign .indd file.
When I create a text frame in indesign on first page using Facing option whose value are
X=0, Y=0, Width=50,Height=50 and ruler is set on (0,0).I am not using any rotation.

This example isn't a cover flow simulation, it's a simple cylindrical arrangement of the layers with each layer maintaining orientation to the front (not the camera) as the cylinder rotates.
It's a simple thing to distribute a few layers around a cylinder using a null. Simply create a place holder 3D layer, a 3D null and a camera in your comp. Then set the null as the parent to the 3D layer, move it back in z space an appropriate distance and duplicate it so you have as many layers as you want. Let's say you want 10 layers.
Once you're at that point all you have to do is to remove the parenting of layer 1 and rotate the null y value 36º (360/10), then rotate the null another 36º by selecting the y value, moving the cursor to the left end and typing + 36. Release the next layer from it's null parent, and repeat for each of the layers.
Next you'd select all of the layers, reveal the rotation property and with all selected right click and reset orientation. Now all the layers will be facing the front of the comp.
Now select the Y rotation value of one of the layers and set up an expression to the null's y value. The expression looks like this:

The next step is to copy the expression only, then select all of the layers and paste.
The last step is to then parent all of the layers back to the null.
To create the motion, animate the null.
It is possible to write scripts or expressions to automatically distribute layers, adjust the radius, and simplify this process. They would be very helpful if you had a lot of projects like this to do, but for one project with a limited number of layers this is probably the easiest approach.
You'll find a
CS4 example here. This should get you started. Just animate the Y rotation value of the null and adjust the camera position to frame up the shot the way you like.

Animateing InDesign Objects in After Effects

i got an little problem. I need to animate single Objects in InDesign and need to do this in After Effects.
is there a way to import the InDesign File into After Effects so i can animate every single Object ? It is too much work to import every single Objekt out of the InDesign Project and assemble everything together.

No. Your only option would be to export a PDF from ID, but you cannot access separate objects inside the PDf, so this is more or less useless....

Can't install CS6 apps- photoshop, illustrator, indesign, after effects, flash and dreamweaver.

I had CS6 master collection installed on my computer up until today. I removed it because Illustrator was having a strange issue where points would snap to random nothing and, align wouldn't work and changing the stroke of an object would cause it to move down and to the left each time the stroke changed.
Illustrator issues aside, since uninstalling I can't get it to reinstall! It gives the following error:

So far this is what I have done:
uninstall everything, run the cleaner tool, reinstall- same error

in checking the error codes individually it looked as though I might have file system errors
I rebooted with command+r and launched disk utilities from there (mac safe mode I guess?)
verified mac hdd: verified OK
ran repair anyway- verified OK again
checked and, if possible, repaired each other volume- all OK
rebooted, reinstalled, same error
I am going to address the first error now- that the display requirements were not met, and remove my external diplay from my macbook and reinstall.
Any help you might have though, I would be very grateful.

oh, also, i've re-downloaded the installer and also gotten a third installer from a friend.
removing the external display did not help

Using Indesign's effects on photos vs doing it in Photoshop

Heya,
hope someone can help me with this. I'm still an Indesign noob.
I'm working on a magazine that will be printed through an Offset printer. There are several images that will look like this: http://drop.brizk.com/wWyt
What I'm doing here is apply a blending mode to an image that has a coloured layer in the background.
My question is whether it is better to do this entirely in Photoshop, save the file and place it into Indesign OR whether I should just place the normal photo and use Indesigns effect/blending mode feature to apply this effect to it. On screen it looks very similar, my (cheap) laser printer that I use for basic proofing shows slightly different results with each method.
I'm reusing the colour as fill-colour for several other elements in the Indesign file, so I'm unsure whether I should keep everything internal (in Indesign) or whether I should outsource the effects to Photoshop and just do basic stuff in Indesign.
Are there any pros/cons with either method? One apparent one is that Indesign runs faster/smoother if it doesn't have to apply the effects itself.

Is this going to be a two colour job? Or is it full colour? Do you need spots? Is it CMYK + spot colour?
InDesign can certainly handle it, so if it cuts a step out of the process then that's great. You can fill the box with a colour - then you can get teh Graphic to a blending mode - you do this by selecting the graphic with the White Arrow tool.
Depends on what the goal is, phothshop has a lot more control over it. Might be faster to setup an Action in photoshop and then place all the images. Or it might be faster settting up an Object Style in InDesign.

InDesign - Transparency Effects not displaying in PDFs

I am experiencing a situation where I have a Frame with a stroke and a multiply effect which does not display in the PDF. If the multiply effect is removed, the object displays in the PDF. (I am using the PDF/X-4 preset to create the PDF.)
Any new paths created within the document exhibit the same results.
If I create a Frame or Path in a NEW document, apply the stroke and multiply effect, and then copy and paste it into my first document, the pasted items display in the PDF without difficulty.
If I copy the troublesome Frame from the original document and paste it into a new document, it exhibits the same results (it will not display in the PDF). I then create a new Frame in the new document, on the same layer, and with the same attributes. When a PDF is created the troblesome Frame will not display, but the new Frame right next to it will.
I have preflighted the resulting PDF, and both Frames are listed in the Form XObjects. I can also use the selection tool the the Acrobat Plug-In PitStop to select the Frame which is not displayed.
1. Am I missing a setting which is object specific and is carried with the copy paste?
2. What else could be the cause of this situation?

The transparency problem seems to be initiated by an interaction with other pages in the document. If I delete a range of pages, or move the troublesome page earlier in the document, I am able to create new transparent content that will display when PDF'ed, but the existing transparent content still exhibits the same problem.
Somehow specific content on the page is retaining the characteristics from this interaction with the other pages. Content has been moved to another layer without success, and prior to the page move new content was created on another layer without success.
I have uploaded samples including the original 52 page InDesign document with all confidential content removed except for some transparent objects on page 52. In this current state the existing objects and and new transparent objects will not display in the PDF.

How do i control my object effects when i use a button?

I want to use a button so when I click on it a square rises up from the bottom of my slide. What I'm finding is by the time I click the button to make the square visible its effect has already loaded with the slide so you don't get to see the squares effect working, how do i pause the effect of the square until I have pressed the button? Should I just make the button jump to a duplicate slide so the effect hasn't loaded if so this will be a pain when I have several buttons on the slide that I want to make objects move when i click them?

Nothing to do with button becoming inactive, really, but with the way the Effects are scripted. Will try to answer your question about the buttons however.
I'll try to explain the functionality of a button. A button typically has a pausing point that is visible on the timeline, right? The portion before the pausing point is the 'active' portion, which will mean that the user can click on the button and this will have results. When you click on a button, the action attached as Success action is triggered, in this example the Text Caption is set to visible. But at the same time the playhead is released and moves beyond the pausing point into the Inactive portion, which means that it cannot be clicked again.
Two possible solutions:
use a rollover caption instead of your click/text captions work flow.
Create a small advanced action BtShow1 and BtShow2 for each of the buttons, again I have screenshots ready but they are not accepted, bummer.... Will try to write the statements:
Show Text_1      for the first button, shows the correct Caption
Hide Text_2       hides the other caption that could have been shown by the other button
Assign rdcmndGotoFrame with rdinfoCurrentFrame            this expression puts back the playhead directly before the pausing point so that button remains active
You can duplicate this action to create Btn2, and you only have to reverse the ID's of the Text Captions
When you attach those actions to the buttons, you can click as many times as you want. You tell that you have searched the forums? Bit strange because I have been explaining this so many times, and blogged about this kind of micro-navigation (frame by frame):

Multiple Object Effects / Advanced Actions

Hi all,
I am trying to create an animation in Captivate that moves multiple times. I am having trouble with the effects that I am adding.
Basically, I have a line (signifying a balance bar) that I want to go either left or right when certain objects "Fall" on it. I was able to successfully add the "rotation" effects and space them out at different times. Each rotation takes less than half a second to complete.
However, as my project actually plays, the object seems to "anticipate" the next rotation. It compeltes the first adjustment but then you will see the object slooowwwllyy creeping in the direction of the next one - before that effect is even set to play.
After some quick reading I thought maybe this meant I needed to instead add object triggers. Problem is, I only see the action pane when I have the slide selected - nothing else (I am trying to add the effects to an image - I also tried recreating it with a shape in Captivate and still nothing) - AND, I can't figure out how I could "time" multiple actions through triggers anyway because as far as I understand, I could only select the effect to occur "on enter" - not at a specific time.
Can anyone help me figure out either how to stop the multiple timed effects from creeping up on each other, or how to get the advanced actions applied for this effect?

Either way, the description in the list and the way you have explained it still don't clarify the behavior I was getting. It seems that, based off of my new understanding, the regular "rotate" should then make the object turn immediately (as in, one second it's flat, and then the next it's slanted - without showing the steps in between). However, I think you agree that when I was using the "rotate" effect, it did seem like it was doing a slow change instead of just changing the property. It wasn't obvious to anyone reading that it was just a matter of using the wrong effect, otherwise I would have expected that response earlier. So, it seems something still wasn't working correctly that I hope someone can better pinpoint and explain so we all have a better understanding.
Lesson learned I guess, but it would nice if Adobe also did a better job of documenting what the effects are supposed to do - straight from the source that created them. It's kind of crazy to me that someone had to make a table themselves attempting to explain these things.
Thanks to everyone for your time trying to help, and please do keep me updated on whether or not there is some kind of reasoning for the effect I was getting.
