Indesign "Open" Dialogue Box default column wdith

When I try to open files from InDesign, the "Name" Column of the "Open a file" dialogue box is completely collapsed by default. Is there a way to adjust this so when I hit "File Open" I can read the names of the files? This didn't used to be a problem, it just started happening.
I just trashed my InDesign Prefs and that was not a solution.
Please see my screen shot.
Thanks!

Thanks for not hating me<G>.
If you haven't tried rearranging the order of columns, resetting the column widths, opening a file, using the file, saving it, then doing File > Open again, give it a shot. Perhaps rearranging the columns might kick OS X into gear.
Search Google for terms like "mac os x open file dialog box won't retain my widths," without quotes, for possible solutions. Also, look up macsupportcentral, a Yahoo group, and post your question there.
If the problem sticks relentessly, look into the commercial Mac utility, Default Folder X. Search Google for terms like "default folder x bundle,' without quotes. I got my copy in a bundle of mostly pretty good Mac applications, for, IIRC, less for the bundle, than for DFX's usual price. I don't guarantee it will solve your problem, so you might want to try their trial first.

  • Search not working in open dialogue box.

Why is it that after nearly TWO years the search function in the open dialogue box is still not working in inDesign? Why can it work when in the PASTE dialogue box but not the OPEN dialogue box? I discovered this fault years ago and wrote about it in length but it has yet to be addressed. Is there anybody else that is bothered by this?

    Doc Maik.
I'm on a MAC. The dialogue box that appears when you OPEN a file. The search command in the top right corner (spotlight) does not work. Has not worked since the upgrade to CS6. See attached.

  • No search results from "Open" dialogue box

In Mavericks OS 10.9.4, I get no search results when searching from an open dialogue box, i.e. open file from within Photoshop or some other program.  Searching from within Finder works fine.  Anyone else seeing this?  Any solutions?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe modeand log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Open dialogue box in Lion is not supporting drag and drop files (UPDATE)

This is freaking me out. Because now in Lion you can't drag and drop file from the desktop (and other folders!) to open dialogue box. It was most usefull function in Mac OS X. Why Apple kill usabillity?
Access to the desktop is not a problem (command + d), but if the current file is located deep in the hierarchy of folders, it becomes a big problem!!!
Dear Apple, please fix it as soon as you can.
UPDATE: Omg, I found the problem, it works only if I drad and drop file on the bottom panel, not in all open dialogue box area:

Interesting, this is the second time today I've seen this one come up. It does work, drag and drop works like crazy everywhere here. What does console say when it happens (or not, in your case)?

  • Can i use icon preview in an "open" dialogue box?

Is it possible to use icon preview (see the icon of a jpg file as a thumbnail) when browsing folders from an "open/save" dialogue box? Is it even possible to use icon preview when using column view in Finder?

the problem is, if i only use the preview column (like you describe), i have to actually select every file in a folder, one at a time, until i see the image i'm looking for. what i would like to do is to see an actual thumbnail of the image as the icon itself so that i can select a folder and then see all the images listed in the column beside it. i need to upload groups of images to the web, and i need to select a different combination of photos each time. (using Transmit) i'd like to scroll through the column view (in a dialogue box) and cmnd-select all the images i want to upload together. some folders do have thumbnail icons in column view mode and others do not, but i can't figure out how to get my folders (which do show thumnail icons if in icon view mode) to become some of the ones that do show thumbnails in column view. i can't figure out what the difference is in the folders, image files, or view settings that makes the difference. the cmnd+J view options seem to apply only to Finder, but the problem i'm looking at is related more to some kind of SystemUIServer or something.

  • How can I make this desktop dialogue box default on a larger size?

When I do a "save as" with a document, the dialogue box is so small I have to scroll to reach the folder I want it in.  Then I have to drag the corner to make it larger.
Is there a way to make this box default on a larger size so I can see more file choices?  see pic

Hold down option as you resize the window.

  • Open dialog box default

    Hi-
I recently upgraded to DW CC and most everything else in the CC. I am only having this issue with DW on a Win 8, 64-bit system. PS, AI, InDesign and Premiere CC  do not do this.
When I want to open files, and I routinely want to open .cfm files, I need to repeatedly select the "All files(*.*) option in the dropdown box to see my .cfm files. I want to be able to navigate and see the file names without having to repeatedly choose ALL FILES. It defautls to All documents which does not show .cfm files. Here is a pic from the Edit-> Open dialog (I added the red arrow):
This is not the same problem that I have seen others posting about file associations. I have already added the .cfm extensions to my file preferences and I have no trouble opening or editing any file type. It is only the dropdown box in the 'Open' dialog that is a constant source of frustration.
Any help would be appreciated, thank-you.

This is not an answer, just a "me too" post.
I have the exact same issue, except that I'm usually opening .aspx files. I waste so much time hand-clicking to select All Files (*.*) — would *love* to be able to change the default!

I have two identical machines, that are running CCv6 software. On one machine I have Libraries as an option in my save as box and in the other it's using the Adobe pre-set options. I have not edited the registry file. I am not running any aftermarket plug-ins. There must be a dialoge box somwehere, but I can't find it. Help it's making me crazy trying to drill down to my save files.

  • Open and Save dialogue boxes are useless

I have recently moved from Windows to Mac after being told I would never look back and I am already 'looking back' somewhat in terms of the OS. I work with photos and graphics and I'm on the move a lot so went for a Mac Book Pro Retina with SSD and I am not going to lie it is lightning quick and the display is beautiful. But when it comes to saving and opening workflow it does not work how I expected it would.
It seems such a simple thing but you cannot rename files from within mac open and save dialogue boxes. I'm so used to right clicking on a PC to create a new folder, hit F2 or right click and hit rename to rename to what I want then save the file into that new folder. You can also directly edit the name of the files and folders from within the open save dialogue box. If you right click on a mac you can create a new folder but it defaults to the name 'untitled folder' and you then can't change it's name. It find it unbelievable that you can not do this on a MacOS! So unbelievable that I went into an Apple store and spoke with someone there. When I showed them the problem they weren't even aware of it and pointed out I should just use finder. But that is not convenient if if you want to rename a new folder to then have to come out of the open save relocate in finder and change from there.
I know there is the new folder button down to the left hand side and you can rename the folder as soon as you create it using that but sometimes you may make a mistake and want to change it. Same with file names.
Why can't you do this on a Mac? It's crazy. After searching about, I came across the Default Folder X app which appears to fix this issue which isn't really that cheap for something I consider should be 100% native in any OS.
There are other issues that frustrate me from moving over from Windows to Mac (like the ability to snap windows to screen edges, Better Snap Tool fixed that for me at a much more reasonable price but still would have expected this to be native), which I know I will just have to get used to but this one really surprised me.
Considering I was promised so much in terms of better efficiency with work flow and ease of use overall there is still a lot that's left to be desired.

As Axeman1020 noted, the Mac OS is not Windows. Things are not going to be exactly the same. It's no different than if you went from Windows to Linux. So expect a month or so of getting used to a different OS. Once muscle memory gets used to the different keyboard commands, and just where things are in general and how they behave, it'll seem just as easy as Windows.
To answer some of your statements or questions:
It seems such a simple thing but you cannot rename files from within mac open and save dialogue boxes.
Renaming items in the Open or Save dialogue boxes are not what those are for. I know Windows allows it, but why? That's a function for the desktop so you can't accidentally change a file or folder name in a dialogue box that has nothing to do with opening a file or saving one. If opening a file, that's all you're doing. If saving, only the name of the file you're saving can be modified. That's what those dialogue boxes are for - nothing else.
Yes, you can give a file you're saving any name you like. You can even click on any name shown in the save dialogue box to give it that name if you want. You can also highlight the default name and change it.
If you right click on a mac you can create a new folder but it defaults to the name 'untitled folder' and you then can't change it's name.
Of course you can. Either highlight the folder and press Enter, or slowly click on the name twice. Either action will make the name editable.
When I showed them the problem they weren't even aware of it and pointed out I should just use Finder. But that is not convenient if you want to rename a new folder to then have to come out of the open save relocate in finder and change from there.
You're crossing over two different things. I believe you mean renaming a folder from the Save dialogue box. When you click the New Folder button, you have the opportunity to give the new folder any name you want before clicking Create.
If you type the wrong name, then yes, you have to finish the save before you can rename the folder. So either be sure you type the name in correctly before clicking Create, or change the misspelling afterwards. You're not saving any time fixing a typo within the Open dialogue box. It will take the same amount of extra time to do it there as opposed to fixing it on the desktop after you complete the save.
I know there is the new folder button down to the left hand side and you can rename the folder as soon as you create it using that but sometimes you may make a mistake and want to change it. Same with file names.
You are again trying to force a Windows feature into an OS that is not Windows. The Mac does some things that I wish Windows could do, and visa versa. However, you can't force any OS to do something it simply isn't designed to do. Expecting it to change by sheer willpower is only going to drive you crazy. You need to let go of what you want the OS to do as opposed to what it will do.
Considering I was promised so much in terms of better efficiency with work flow and ease of use overall there is still a lot that's left to be desired.
I find the Mac OS to be incredibly efficient. This from a person who has used Windows for many more years overall than the Mac OS. Yes, it took time to get used to how the Mac OS behaved. But rather than fighting it (which is pointless), I simply took the time to learn how to use it as it's designed.

  • Very weird dialogue box problem

I have been running a 24" IMAC since summer without any problems. We use an older MAC for a server in our office. A couple of days abo my save as and open dialogue boxes developed this weird problem. When I double click on a folder on our server the other folders and files within that folder appear under the original, as if you had turned one of those arrows around only there are no arrows. This is only happening on one hard drive but all programs. It is also only affecting the IMAC other (laptop and G5 etc.) are working fine.
I reintalled OS tiger yesterday but it did not solve the problem and now several of my other programs won't work. I can reinstall them as well but I still need to solve this problem.
I was wondering if deleting preference files would help. I am afraid to try this because I don't know much about it and don't want to make the situation worse.

  • Changing Printer Dialogue Box Standard Setting

Help! This is driving me crazy. I print thousands of documents every week from Filemaker. For some reason - probably something I have done ages ago - my 'Standard' preset in the printer dialogue box defaults to printing 2 copies. Yes I know it's easy to just change this manually to 1 copy but I have tried every way possible to change the 'Standard' preset and have failed. Does anyone know how to do this? I called Apple Support and they were useless.

It might help if you delete the following prefs files in your home directory's Preferences folder. They have the following form:
com.apple.print.PrintingPrefs.plist - the general prefs file if the setting is not related to presets, and you might want to delete this one last in case deleting the other two, if they both exist, works.
    com.apple.print.custompresets.plist
    com.apple.print.custompresets.forprinter.<printername>.plist
You could also try changing this value with the CUPS page: http://127.0.0.1:631/
    Hope this helps.
