InDesign (or other poster) workflow advice

I have been looking at the "Aperture InDesign Intergration" plugin primarily in order to integrate a "poster workflow".
http://www.macosxautomation.com/applescript/aperture/indesign/index.html
I have used the Indesign Demo for a project and basically the linking of images was really fantastic, the ability to manipulate the image behind a "window" was really great as well. Effectively it seemed like a seamless workflow.
I'm curious to know if anyone has any advice as to whether I need the full CS5.5 - which I guess includes Illustrator and Photoshop? I do plan to do some work in a vector program such as AI as I do a bunch of 3D CAD modeling and I'd like to "bump" some of this into my presentations and vector seems like the way to go.
I guess what I am wondering is if I should just go ahead and bite the bullet and buy this software for 700 clams or if I have options or other considerations here.
Hoping to have it set up shortly so any advice is really welcome.
Thanks
Jon

BIG QUESTION: Is there any reason to belive that Aperture will develop a better quality image if it begins with a NEF file rather than a DNG?< </div>
No reason to speculate on or to wait for Apple to do anything.
Use the format you want to use, find an application that suits your needs, might not be Aperture.

  • HDV 1080i 50 to SD DVD - (yes i have read the other posts!)

    HI All,
I have read two other posts and still struggle to get a good clean output that does not suffer from some degree of motion shudder or interlacing type lines. I capture 1080i 50 pal in australia and edit native hdv. On some recent shots I have found an annoying motion shudder when i do a slow pan. I have seen this often on hdv. Most of my work goes to the web via h264 which is great, but with dvd if i choose a format that matches upper field, i get combing or similar. I turned to outputting to dvcpro pal with none as the field dominance and it appears to work better( not sure why).
All my work needs to be output in web and dvd so i have tried a cocktail of uncompressed 8 bit, which still showed a combing type issue, and DV pal which seemed soft even on external monitor.
In the bonsai method i could not get a good result at all and wondered which way the sequence settings were set and render options which were not visible in the tute.
Is there another bulletproof way to get the best pic quality without endless torture? I am considering a mxo box as a possibility but am not sure if this will help in encoding sd better than the usual way.
    Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

    Don't use HDV??
I have no idea how to help you beyond capturing as some other hd codec which doesn't help you at all. A couple of days ago, a cam op on a show I worked this week was showing off his brand new little Sony AVCHD camcorder. His biggest complaint was that Windows Movie Maker wouldn't work with this jewel. I had to point out to him that how many years on is it and HDV is still a dismal wreck to work with natively. Live tv cam ops think everything is plug and play as it usually is on their jobs.
Good luck, I can definitely feel your pain. There are some wonks on here that do have good HDV workflows, perhaps they'll drop in later.

  • Film workflow advice

    Hello,
I need some workflow advice for a feature film and I would really appreciate some input and technical expertise. I am working with telecined footage from 16mm film and I need to perform reverse telecine with Cinematools so that I can edit the footage in Final cut. My end format will be a 35mm blow up from my original 16mm negative, so I need Cinematools to track my footage correctly so that I can later export a cut list for the negative cutter.
My digital footage is SD and is on DV cam tapes. The lab used a telecine speed of 23.98 when they transferred the footage. The lab provided flex files which I used to create a cinema tools database and to batch capture all of the footage.
First, I need to confirm that the footage was captured correctly.
To capture I used the FCP preset: DV NTSC 48 kHz (29.97 fps DV-NTSC Best Quality 720x480)
I did not use the FCP capture preset "DV NTSC 48 kHz Advanced (2:3:3:2) Pulldown Removal" because my understanding is that this preset is designed to remove pulldown during capture when used with external hardware designed to remove pulldown during capture, correct? In this case I will be removing the pulldown with Cinema Tools instead.
I also am assuming that setting the capture fps to 23.98 would have been wrong because my footage is coming from DV Cam tapes, which can only be 29.97, right? So even though the telecine speed was 23.98, the footage needs to be captured at 29.97 and then processed with Cinematools to make it 23.98 or 24 fps, correct?
Second, I need to know if my goal should be to make my footage 23.98 or 24 fps with Cinematools. If my end goal is to export an EDL for a negative cutter to go back to my 16mm footage to cut from, should I edit at 24 fps? I think the answer is yes, but then I am worried that my telecine was done at a speed of 23.98. My audio was recorded at 30 fps - though my understanding is that the fps of the audio doesn't matter since audio is recorded in time and not frames. However, I did read in the Cinematools manual that if the footage is 23.98 as opposed to 24 fps, then it means that my footage is going to playback at a slightly slower rate, thereby affecting audio sync. If that is true, will I have to slow my audio slightly to maintain sync? This doesn't seem ideal.
Third, I am having trouble when I do a reverse telecine test with Cinematools on my footage. I am looking at burned-in key code and film frame numbers in my footage and observing that when I advance through my footage frame by frame in FCP, the film frame numbers of every frame are perfectly clear and legible (they advance thus: A2, B2, C1, D1, D3). However, when I view a clip in Cinematools (pre-reverse telecine), the frame numbers are blurred and have interframe flicker (the interlacing field pattern). The same is true after I perform reverse telecine on the clip. The cinemtools manual mentions this as something to be avoided in a clip that has been reverse telecined (in "Checking you Reverse Telecine Results on page 132) - however I see this problem in clips that I have not yet reverse telecined.
I am worried because another person worked with this footage before me and I fear that they performed reverse telecine on the footage already (and incorrectly) and directed Cinematools to overwrite the original file instead of creating a new one. If this is true then I would have to start over and recapture everything. On the other hand, it seems like if that were the case I would see the problem in FCP as well. Is there a way that I can tell for sure?
Thank you so much in advance for any advice you can give me! I really appreciate it.

Thanks Jim. The project is sort of like an "extended music video".
So it is a record, 45 minutes long and then using that as a guide,
we shot the footage. Its not gonna be just lipsyncing all the time, but
there will be other things inserted there as well.
It is just the workflow that bothers me and mainly:
1 Should I convert HDV material after capturing with prores 422 or stay in native
2 When should I convert from PAL to NTSC?
    3 Should I s t a r t, by importing the 5.1 surround mixes to FCP6 and then work
    with that as a guide?
I´ve done some music videos before, but this is more like a music movie and
will be sold as a sales DVD.
I would appreciate any help you guys can give.
    Thank you, timo

  • Indesign and other for £19.95 each.... Legit?!?!?!?!

sorry to bother this forum, but just found a website (
URL deleted by host) on which you can buy Indesign and other for £19.95 a piece.
sounds like a fraud and just wanted to check with others whether to trust this kind of thing and how to find out whether it is legitimate or not. Is a bloody good deal!!
    Cheers!

Here's my two cents worth of advice. Pay particular attention to the

  • Read other posts - still cannot see .htaccess files in DW CS4

Hi - I don't know if it's me or what, but I've read other posts and still cannot figure out why I cannot see .htaccess files through DW CS4.  It says to go to VIEW but I do not have or see this option.
    Here are some screenshots:
and of course the folder where you cannot see the .htaccess file

Mac OS 10.4 and earlier (and *nix systems in general) treat file names with a period in front as telling the file system that that particular file is supposed to be hidden. And thus it won't show up under the normal file system views. But the file is still there. To see it, open up Terminal and type:
    defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles YES
Relaunch Finder and now you should be able to see every invisble file on your machine. To return to default, go back to Terminal and type:
    defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles NO
and relaunch Finder and everything should be back to normal.
Or you can use one of the many utility apps out there that allow you to make these kinds of changes. (Cocktail comes to mind - http://www.maintain.se/cocktail).
Of course you can also build a workflow such as yours as well...  :-)

  • Post Workflow - Storage Calculation

I'm producing a documentary set to start shooting in September. I'm currently working on picking a camera and considering the post workflow at the same time. I'm trying to calculate the amount of storage space needed. I'm either shooting HDV (from a Sony V1U or Z1U camera) or DVCPRO HD (from Panasonic HVX-200 P2 Cards). Without actually having a deck and material to test, I can't calculate the amount of storage I'll need. I'm looking at upwards of 300 hours of footage.
Does someone have a chart, document, or calculator that can help me figure out the required storage?
    Thanks,
    Brad

  • Looking for some workflow advice

I'm starting work on a project that has media coming from several different sources, and I'd like some workflow advice. I'm using the CS6 Production Premium suite on a Windows7 computer. My primary video source is a Canon XF-100 shooting 24/1080p MXF video, but I'll also be incorporating AVC-HD shots taken with a 60D, XA10, GoPro, and iPhone. So, here are my main questions:
    1. Should I transcode or not? Most of the footage (at least 2/3rds or so) will be from the XF-100, which Premiere can edit natively. I'm inclined just to put the AVC-HD clips straight into an MXF-formatted project and let Premiere render them in the sequences as needed. But I'm also wondering if it would be better for overall quality and consistency to transcode everything into the same format before importing into the project and set the project to that format.
    2. If I do transcode, what format? Should I just convert the AVC-HD stuff to MXF for use in an MXF-native project? Or should I convert everything to another format entirely?. If so, which one? (I'm thinking AVC-Intra 100 at 24/1080p, but I'm not sure.)
Any experienced sages out there want to offer their $0.02? Thanks in advance,
    Stu

transcoding will not produce any better quality. you can actually degrade the quality in most cases, unless transcoding to raw.  transcoding is usually done for proxy editing to allow for faster editing, or compatibility, if the original file cannot be read by the editing application. premiere pro usually handles mixed formats well, just make sure to either create the sequence from a clip that matches the destination format or create a sequence manually and specify the format that will be used for export.
if you do need to transcode to get some files to read, the avid dnxhd codec is a popular choice as it takes very little cpu and gpu resources to read.  it has several quality options you can choose from, but it is limited to 1080p.  if you transcode for faster editing (proxy editing), use dnxhd 36 8bit, and relink to the originals when done to keep their quality.

  • Spreads removed when Indesign files are posted to Cloud Storage for client review

Although my document is set up with facing page spreads in indesign, when I post it to my cloud for the client to review only single pages are shown. This is going to confuse matters for my client. Any suggestions as to how to solve this problem?

Send them a PDF showing spreads instead of using Creative Cloud previews. They are pretty lame. (They also currently don't show previews for InDesign CC 2014 files.)

  • Finally got my ssd and ram, any pre/post installition advice?

After having looked at various places on the internet, I finally got 8GBs of 1066mhz ram and 128 gb SSD of Transcend and OCZ make, respectively. I'm going to install it on my MBP 13inch tonight. its 12.40 AM here and I shall be waiting for the final pre and post installition adivce from you fine geeks out there!
    What I'm planning to do...
I've made a recovery disk of Lion on a pen drive. After a TM backup i'm gonna install the SSD inside the MBP, clean install Lion using the recovery disk, start a fresh copy of Lion. Then I'm gonna selectively load stuff from my old hdd to the new one that i would want on the SSD, using a USB to Sata 2 cable.
I have still not opened the packing. Just to confirm... Sata has to be sata 2 for the ssd and ram should be 4gb x 2 of 1066 mhz for my machine right?
dont forget to also give ur pre/post installition advice. Like the TRIM enabling etc....

Albums that feature a mixture of artists cause the sorting/grouping in iTunes to split an album even if it is marked as a compilation. A particularly good example of such an Album is Queen's Greatest Hits III which features 'guest' artists like David Bowie. This album would still be considered to be a Queen album but the artist of some tracks would not be Queen.
Microsoft of all people, came up with a solution for this which was to add an additional meta tag for albums called "Album Artist" as opposed to the normal "Artist" tag (which is used to indicate the Artist of a particular track).
Apple after receiving requests from people (including myself) added support for this Album Artist tag in iTunes 7 but unfortunately only did half the job. With iTunes 7 you can now see and edit this tag but you cannot browse or sort by this tag. Therefore when you browse or sort by Artist, iTunes is using the "Artist" tag and not the "Album Artist" tag and hence your tracks are not sorted as you expected and albums like Queen's Greatest Hits III still get split up.
The ONLY way to get iTunes to display albums properly grouped is to sort by the Album name, if you do this then Cover Flow will only display each album once (as you would expect).
Windows Media Player (unlike iTunes) does let you browse by Album Artist.
Note: If you have more than one Album with the same name e.g. "Great Hits" things may once again get interesting, I work around that by adding a space character at the end of the name so "Great Hits" and "Great Hits " are considered different.
