InDesign pdf not linking to web pdf

I've tried everything--so frustrated.  I create a hyperlink to a PDF on a website, but when I export the InDesign file to PDF, the links to the external PDFs do not work.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Open the PDF in Acrobat (full app not Reader). Click Start Form Wizard from the menu bar. Navigate to the link you want to connect to the web site and add a button. Like here

  • InDesign CS6 not linking to source Word document

When I had Adobe Cs4 when I place a word document in InDesign a link was created to the source documenent. If the word document was changed, when InDesign checked for errors it prompted me to update the link document. Now when I place a word document in CS6 it does not creat a link. If the word document is changed I cannot update the indesign unless I delete everything and place the word document again. Is there a better way?

Thank you so much. I did just that and it's working just fine.
The geniuses at Adobe told me that there was no such option.

  • How can I link to a pdf not on the web?

I'd like to include a link on my website-in-progress to a .pdf that is not on the web. I tried dragging it onto a blank page, thinking I would make an internal link, but no luck. Suggestions?

Use "Link to: A file" in the link inspector.

  • How to put Flash video game onto inDesign PDF file and Website page or link?!

I am making a video game using Adobe Flash 2.0. I need to be able to show what I have through a website (my portfolio) and/or insert it into an interactive Indesign PDF file. The game needs to be able to be played and be used and tested by whoever I send the pdf file to, or whoever is would be view my the site I post it on. I have attempted many different ways to put my game onto my website (cargocollective) and Indesign, but nothing is working! I need help.
For example I need my game to be placed on the website page, and on the pdf document as an image. When it is clicked on I need it to start so people can play the game. I don't know how to do this and I would really love and need to know how! Thanks.

Flash should be able to publish an html page which will provide the web page code needed for embedding the swf.  The page it publishes should be sufficient for planting on a server unless you plan to dress it up with other content as well.
As far as incorporating Flash content into a PDF using InDesign goes, you are best to ask questions about using InDesign in the InDesign forum.  Here is a link to the Overview page whee you can pick which forum applies best to your situation:

    hi all
i had this working well on one computer, my machine at work that has IE6 on it. I use the Embed tag and put in a little line about not showing the borders:
    this worked beautifully first time.
not i am back on my laptop, mac [Firefox, Safari & Opera] , and my mates as well, PC laptop [Firefox and IE7], but now the HTML page i set up with the embedded pdf in it doesn't work now. oddly enough the self help page i used:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/pdfdevjunkie/2007/08/using_the_html_embed_tag_to_di.html
Also doesn't show the embedded pdf which i did see earlier. very confused now. is it my machine? Firefox? all new browsers?
any further help is massively appreciated. I know this can work and have had it working...

  • Multi-page pdf not linking properly

I have a 6-page interactive indd template that I have been using for months without any issues (well, not these at least), but recently it has been not linking multi page pdfs properly. The pdf that I use is always saved from illustrator cs6 and correlates page to page with the indesign file; page 1 in the pdf links with page 1 in the indd and so on... The issue I am having is that almost every other time I link the file up it behaves differently. Sometimes it will link one page of the pdf to all of the pages of the indd while showing that they are linked to different pages, other times it will not show up at all on the pages, but will show that it is linked in the links panel. Sometimes it will only link one of the pages up and leave the other 5 blank or it will link the pages up with some sort of transparency...
Now, I am not sure if this is a problem with Illustrator or Indesign because of another symptom: Sometimes when I save the file as a pdf it saves as if it is not a multi-page pdf with different content on every page, but rather a multi-page pdf with every page being a zoomed-out view of all of the artboards together but with only some of the content showing (only artboard 3 and 4, only artboard 6 and half of 1) when it is opened in acrobat. Also, sometimes the pdf when viewed in acrobat looks perfect, but when linked it only does a few of the pages in indesign.
Long story short, this doesn't make any sense...  I know this is hard to follow and I don't understand why or how it is happening because it seems that every time has a different issue.
I know that you'll probably have questions and I’ll do my best to answer them, but I'm afraid that uploading files for samples won't work because there appears to be nothing wrong with the files themselves... just the links and/or export.
    Win7, CS6 , 12 gigs RAM, i5

I have been using this method successfully for quite some time with these exact files, only in the last few days has this problem shown up.
When I originally made the template in indesign, I imported the pdf, showed import options, and linked the pages to the same page number in the pdf. 1 to 1, 2 to 2, etc. My original thought was that this setting had been lost, so deleted the linked pdf and imported it again to try to get the 1 to 1 link. However, that did not change anything and I noticed that the page that shows up by itself in the pdf is almost always page 2, not page 1. If the page-to-page connection had been lost, all of the pages in indesign would be linking to page 1 as is the default behavior for linked pdfs.
Also, I thought that the save issue would be on the illustrator side too, so I tried resaving it but that didn't work either. The only way that I can get the file to work is if I remake it completely and save over the old file.
Now, I know that you're most likely thinking that this is an illustrator issue, but I don't think that it is one or the other, but rather both of them. The screenshots that I attached above are not the only way this error manifests itself. Sometimes the pdf looks right in acrobat, but once it is linked it displays with a transparency, shows only a few of the pages, or shows none at all.
I'm probably going in circles here, but I cannot figure out which program is the cause of the error or if there are two different issues that are happening at the same time.

  • I need to make a pdf document, made in photoshop, 'page turn' and then add it to my website. I know I can do this in indesign but indesign will not open pdf files for some inexplicable reason. Any ideas how I can do it without completely starting again?

I need to make a pdf document, already made in photoshop, 'page turn' and then add it to my website as an e-brochure. I know I can do this in indesign but indesign will not open pdf files for some inexplicable reason. Any ideas how I can do it without completely starting again?

    Hello waitingone,
please try this (all terms are translated from my German programs to my best knowledge):
    1. Did the creator of the pdf file enable the import options?
    2. See import options: choose an other visibility option for your layer.
    3. Let you show the import options and click into one with a black background and try these out (often a gray is selected).
    4. See trimming: try the different modes there. Often works: "Media".
    5. Is the pdf file (eg from Word) correctly created?
    6. Is the PDF file protected? >>> no import possible.
    7. If that does not help, store the pdf file in Acrobat, repair possible errors, run the PDF Optimizer before placing in InDesign.
    Good luck!

  • InDesign PDF Exports not as small as Quark

Anybody know why inDesign PDFs are double the size of Quark's? I choose the smallest file size setting and the PDFs still come out twice the size of Quark's.
    Thanks!

Without seeing the comparison files in terms of content, it's very hard to guess what's going on exactly, but there are a few considerations.
    (1) Quark does not support PDF creation with ICC color profiles. Those can get rather large if you have multiple CMYK color spaces or a large number of different RGB color spaces, but those profiles are necessary. Being smaller because you are not color-managed is hardly a feature.
    (2) InDesign does uses PDF language features that allow fairly intelligent handling of objects within Acrobat when using exported PDF (such as understanding that the fi ligature is really the letter f followed by i for purposes of searching, for example).
You don't mention which version of InDesign you are running, but very dramatic PDF file size improvements were made for InDesign 5 over InDesign 4 and for content with non-overriden graphics on master pages, significant PDF file size improvements for InDesign 6 over InDesign 5.

  • Generated PDF file...TOC Items Not Linked

Been racking my brain all day trying to figure out how the heck I created a PDF document TOC with hot links to the document pages from FM 9...and now all of a sudden when I save as a PDF from FM 9 my PDF document TOC is not linked to the document.  Help in FM 9 is not very helpful.  I'm using FM 9, Structured.  Help please.
    Thank you,
    Eric G.

Hi Art, thank you for responding so fast.  My TOC is being generated by an external source (ATA iSpec2200 app), so I don't have a "TOC" FM file to view properties on.   At one time I was saving docs to PDF and having the TOC links active.  Do you think the problem lies in my external TOC generator?

  • Hyperlinks in Indesign/PDF

I created a newsletter in Indesign and used the hyperlink function to link some text and photos to certain items. I was able to link web addresses and an e-mail address with no problem. However, I linked a photo to a file on my computer. Bottom line is when you click on the logo the event flyer opens up! I exported it to Acrobat so I could email it as an attachment. Once in a PDF format, I clicked on the logo and received errors and the file wouldnt open up. I then used the PDF link tool and reset the file to the logo.  When I tested it, it worked fine. However, when I emailed it to myself to assure it sent properly.....I'm now not able to open up any of the files attached to the logos (other than web/email addresses). Is there a trick to linking hard drive files (which are PDF files) to where they arent lost once sent by email? Please help!
    Thanks,
    AW

Yeah the logo is part of the PDF. But I want the viewer to click on it to view a flyer that is not on the web. Would I need to just add the flyer as a page and link it that way? I didnt want to ruin the flow of the newsletter with the flyers not in the same scheme. I guess I could always place them in the same scheme and create another page!

  • Reader does not link to a web page with a tilde in the url

We have a PDF with a link that includes a tilde character (~) in the url link. When we open the PDF in Adobe Reader X (Mac or Windows) and click on the link in the PDF, it goes into the web browser and does not find the web site. If we use Acrobat Pro 9 or X, clicking on the link will navigate to the web page correctly. Basically what I see is the Tilde character is mapped to %257E instead of staying a Tilde (~).
Has anyone else seen this issue?
    Thanks for your response.

  • Creating 508-Compliant InDesign PDFs for Accessibility

Over the next few weeks my company will be reformatting all of the attachments on our Web site to meet "508" complaince standards for accessibility (a govenment contract requirement). While we are quickly getting a handle on how to create 508-compliant PDFs from MS Word and other MS Office documents, I keep running into problems when converting our InDesign documents. Our InDesign documents (often education posters) are usually more complex than the other standard documents created in Word, which is why we used InDesign to create them in the first place, but I'm having difficulty finding supporting documentation that is detailed enough to help me problem-solve the 508 issues I encounter. Adobe has some basic InDesign "accessibility" information on its Web site, and it offers a document called "Creating Accessible PDF Documents with With Adobe InDesign CS4" that offers a good introduction to the concepts and process. But I just can't seem to find information that is in-depth enough to help me create or modify InDesign documents that don't require endless hours of hit-or-miss fixing in Acrobat. I've checked standard third-party references such as my Acrobat and InDesign "Bibles," but no one seems to go into great depth on using the more detailed screens and options related to creating accessible documents. Are there other resources out there that can help? There must be an Indesign Accessibility Guru hiding somewhere (inaccessible!).

Usually there aren't too many responses to questions about creating accessible files because it's a fairly specialized area. I only know about it in a superficial way.
Chad Chelius has created a Lynda.com video which has the best information I've seen about the subject:

  • Edit Indesign pdf in Livecycle Designer

I have a form created in Livecycle designer that I would like to add to an InDesign PDF.  I also would like to make minor revisions to the InDesign document in Livecycle. Can anyone tell me how this can be done. Thanks.

    Hi,
    it cannot be done!
The PDF's you create with Designer and InDesign are totally different animals and not comparable against each other.
To edit an interactive PDF you created with InDesign you can either use Acrobat for minor changes or the source file (indd) and InDesign.
To edit a dynamic PDF created with Designer you have to use Designer as even Acrobat won't allow changes.

  • Illustrator PDF saving as an InDesign PDF

Strange... I have CS5.  Just recently, when I try to save an AI document as a PDF, it looks like everything works correctly, but the resulting icon on my desktop shows ID (pdf).  When I click on it, it says InDesign can not open the document because a plugin is missing or it is open (which it is not).  I can go back into Illustrator and open it, and I can open it through Acrobat, but saving again, through either of these programs still gives me a default of an InDesign PDF which in turn will not open by just clicking on it.
Any thoughts as to what may be causing this?

Indesign canot open the PDF file ,however you can place the pdf file in the Indesign which wil not be editable.

    Place command is under File>place
also what is happening at your end is the issue of the file association, the default application to open the PDF set on your computer is Adobe Indesign.
once the default application will be changed to Acrobat it will work fine for you.
Please let us know the operating system to know the steps or you can google it.
