InDesign refuses to overwrite files?!?

Hello,
Ok, this problem is really starting to frustrate me.
Why does InDesign have so much trouble overwriting a PDF when I've asked it to replace the file?
It claims the file is in use or I don't have permission to do so, but it's not in use and I should have all the permission I like.
The most aggravating thing about it is there is no consistency. Sometimes it will overwrite fine, sometimes I need to quit Acrobat (even though the file is no longer open) and then it will overwrite, sometimes I have to go to the trouble of actually deleting the PDF and saving a new one.
Anyone else have this problem or know what the deal is?

This could happen if the PDF is open in an application, or if the operating system thinks it is - either because the OS is easily fooled, or the application's not smart about turning off the open file signal quickly enough after it's been closed, or ever. Sometimes just selecting a file in the Mac Finder or Windows Explorer can send an incorrect "file in use" or "open file" message.

  • [SOLVED] Overwrite files with pacman.

    Hello all
    I know that pacman, as a design feature, does not overwrite files by default. I've read the post and the wiki about it.
    But I've a situation where I would need to overwrite dozens of files, in different directories, and it would be very nice, If possible, to make an exception to this rule.
    I dont know how, but I've messed up an Kdemod upgrade. It stopped working and I cant uninstall it, because pacman doesnt find the appropriate groups (Kdemod-complete and Kdemod-uninstall).
    On the other hand, I cant simply reinstall it, or kde[extra], because pacman gives dozens "leftover file" messages in different directories, and refuses to overwrite them.
    I just want a way to reinstall KDEmod, at least to try to remove everything with "pacman -Rd kdemod-uninstall" and start from scratch, if it doesnt work. And, I would like to escape manually removing all the files in different directories or a full system reinstall.
    Any Ideas?
    Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Java.lang.Exception: Overwriting file

    Hi All,
    We are having some trouble with one of our interfaces where XI creates files in append mode and gets the filename from the Payload. From last couple of days, we are getting the below error for some reason. There are no other extra config setups in the file CC.
    Any help to figure out the issue would be highly appreciated.
    2008-08-12 14:04:56 Error Attempt to process file failed with java.lang.Exception: Overwriting file '

    HI,
    Once the file is appended, are you doing any further processing with file. because the error "not allowed due to configuration flag" and as youhave said its not for al the messages indicates to single point.
    If the attempt to append the data in file if in case that is in processing and have locked with some other process flow marked after XI...
    You may also need to look into the FTP log details...for more details

  • Snow Leopard 10.6.2 CS4 InDesign can't open files with a "#" in file path

    Snow Leopard 10.6.2 CS4 InDesign can't open files with a "#" in file path using any of these perfectly normal methods:
    1. double-click file in the Finder (e.g in a Folder on your Mac or on your Mac desktop etc.)
    2. select file and choose "File... Open" command-o in the Finder
    3. drag file to the application icon in the Finder.
    4. Select file in Bridge and double-click, choose File.. Open.. or Drag icon to InDesign icon in dock.
    If you try to open an ID file named with a "#", you will get an error message "Missing required parameter 'from' for event 'open.'"
    This happens to any InDesign file that has a "#" (pound sign, number sign, or hash) in the filename or in the file path (any parent folder).
    To reproduce
    Name an InDesign file Test#.idd Try to open it in the Finder or Bridge (as opposed to the "Open" dilaog of InDeisng itself).
    "Solution"
    The file WILL open using File... Open... command-o while in InDesign application.
    Rename the file or folders that have a "#" (shift-3) in the filename.
    Report to Adobe if it bugs you.
    This does not occur in "plain" Leopard 10.5 nor Tiger 10.4
    Untested in Panther or before and
    Untested with CS3 and earlier in Snow Leaopard.
    Anyone have those and want to try this... ?

    In case this really bothers you: we've added a workaround for this into Soxy. If you enable the option, these documents will open fine on double-click.
    You need Soxy 1.0.7 from:
    http://www.rorohiko.com/soxy
    Go to the 'Soxy' - 'Preferences' - 'Other' dialog window, and enable 'Open InDesign via Script'
    (Irrelevant background info (it's all invisible to the user): the workaround works by special-casing how Soxy opens documents in InDesign: instead of using AppleScript, Soxy will use ExtendScript to instruct InDesign to open the document - which works fine).

  • InDesign CS6 Linked Word file issue

    Hi, I have a number of 100+ page InDesign files which have a large (linked) Word file that threads though multiple text boxes throughout all of the document pages.
    The files need to be shared amongst multiple computers within our studio. This setup was used with InDesign CS5.5 last year and worked fine, it was still working fine with CS5.5 this year but we needed to upgrade to CS6.
    We have the trial version of CS6 installed throughout the studio now however we have been having big problems just opening the InDesign files up in CS6. They predominantly seemed to only open up 95% of the way and then hang (spinning wheel) and when (on occasion) we did get 1 open, it was clearly struggling and normally crashed. Can't get most open at all any more.
    I have tried opening files on different computers (Mac & PC), tried changing format of linked Word file, the only thing that seemed to ever work was breaking the link to the Word file
    (from within CS6) and then saving without Word file linked. This is not ideal for our workflow but even if we wanted to do this to all files, I am unable to even get in to some of them to unlink them now (as they are now all saved as CS6 files which won't open). Moving Word doc from location (so that InDesign can't pick it up) also doesn't work.
    I have tried deleting InDesign preferences & all recovery files several times, still no joy. It may be related to being on the trial version (seeing as 5.5 still seems fine) but I am hesitant to upgrade everything if it is not going to work. Does anyone have any ideas??

    Thanks Peter (and Bob), thought last solution was going to be a winner but still hangs at same point (on several files) unfortunately.
    Strangely, an older version of one of the files (a CS6 one that is linked to the same Word file) just opened, which suggests to me that the issue may not actually be wholly to do with it linking to the Word file.
    We just setup a brand new PC with just CS6 trial & Office on it, copied InDesign files to desktop, turned off the auto link boxes in preferences and still no luck. Getting close to giving up stage I think, just can't figure out the cause.

  • Overwrite files BUG! Save PDF to Web Receipts Folder

    In Safari, I will often want to save receipts of bank transactions. So I hit Command-P to print, then in the PDF menu button, I'll choose "Save PDF to Web Receipts Folder."
    When I look in my Web Receipts folder, it has saved the file, but if there was already a file there with that file's name, the old one is replaced by the new one. I found this out the hard way, as my bank's page title is always "National Bank," and Safari uses the page title as the file name. So instead of accumulating receipt PDFs there, I merely had the most recent one.
    This is certainly a bug: the Mac shouldn't be overwriting files without telling me. If it's going to save PDFs in the Web Receipts folder, then I should have the option to choose a name or approve the name that it generates from the HTML title.

    Yes I agree this is an intentional bug.
    Other things you can do to get around this issue:
    1) Disable the "Save PDF to Web Receipts.workflow" located at /Library/PDF Services. This is at the root level of your disk and you will need Admistrator level authority to accomplish this task.
    2) After you disable the workflow you could build your own without the: "with replacing" (save file) option enabled in the script. However, I believe this will not work, as you are already in a dialog box (printer), and the script will generate an error, and prompt a dialog box for you to enter a new name. I am not sure if this is the conduct, as I do not use this workflow or "feature."
    3) After you disable (or just plain not use) the above workflow: Instead create a folder in your Home Directory called "Online Receipts" or whatever memorable name you like. You can place this folder anywhere.
    Next, navigate to ~/Library/PDF Services (that is the folder in your Home folder, not at the root level as in (1) above. If this folder is not there, create it.
    Next create and drag an alias of your "Online Receipts" folder into this PDF Services folder.
    The next time you pull up a print dialog, and hit the PDF button, you will see this newly created folder in the menu. Just select it to save a PDF of your document to it. Files with identical names will be handled by the Finder's naming convention: (eg. file.pdf, file 2.pdf, file 3.pdf, etc.) and no files will be overwritten.
    I hope this helps,

  • Dr. Brown 1-2-3 PS CS5 (to overwrite files)

    I have been a lot of issues on CS5 using Save for Web as a part of recorded action to create 3 jpg sizes. Results are images at 300 ppi instead 72 ppi. (No problems on CS4 running the same steps in the action) One day it works & the other don't. A lot people on this forum suggest me Dr. Brown 1-2-3 process. WOW! it is really good but it doesn't overwrite files with the same name on the destination folders. For example if I have a  photo named ABC1. jpg & run the 1-2-3 script again it creates another file ABC1_1. jpg. Is there any way to change that behaviour?

    Is the Script »scrambled« or can you open it in ExtendScript Toolkit and get the proper text?
    If the latter you could ask for help in the Scripting Forum.

  • Overwrite files twice?

    This problem just started happening today.  For some reason, Illustrator CS3 now needs to be told twice to overwrite files.
    Here's what happens:
    Select File/Save as...
    Dialog box comes up asking where to save the file.
    Navigate and select a file to overwrite.
    Get overwrite notification asking if I'm sure. (Yes) (No)
    Select 'Yes'
    Goes back to the dialog box mentioned in step 2 (overwrite didn't occur)
    Repeat steps 3 to 5 again.
    Finished.
    This occurs when overwriting AI files as well as other files being exported.  I tried restoring my AIprefs file but that didn't help.  I've seen a few older threads here mentioning this problem without any replies.  Is anyone aware of a fix for this problem?

    Well, I figured out the problem and it turns out I didn't have to re-install at all (didn't discover that until after I did though)
    It turns out that this is probably a bug.  Not sure if it's documented or not.
    If the PC has windows explorer set to "Hide extensions for know file types", (Explorer/Tools/Folder Options.../ View tab), then you will receive the overwrite notification twice.
    As soon as I unchecked that option, problem solved.
    Cheers

  • "Adobe InDesign is missing required files. Please reinstall."

    Hi EveryOne !
    "Adobe InDesign is missing required files. Please reinstall. Missing files: \Program Files\Common FIles\Adobe\TypeSupport\...\CP1252.TXT" This is the message I keep receiving on CS5.5 of InDesign.
    I am running InDesign CS5.5 North American, English, with updates on my WinXP SP3 machine. Local copy, no network server. Yes, I might possibly need a newer machine, or a newer desk, or to reinstall WinXP to fix this one problem, but everything other than InDesign CS5.5 still runs great and I feel no compelling reason to make system-wide changes or upgrade until Win8 has been thoroughly tested and new hardware is released and tried and true for that OS.
    So, last year, I received the same message and reinstalling didn't work either. So, I pried everything Adobe off of my computer and reinstalled Adobe PageMaker 7.x. But now I am compelled by my co-workers to use ID, which I have grown to love. I have no desire or $ to upgrade to ID6 but must make use of the ID 5.5. I don't want to uninstall PageMaker as we still use it for legacy projects and it has been a faithful companion to me since it was called Aldus Pagemaker.
    My question: what is causing these messages and why does re-installation not help ? If there is a system problem, why is only CS5.5 affected and not my PageMaker and Quark ? I have searched the web and found only related posts (with no responses relevant to me) for users of Apple products.
    Thank you in advance for any information that you may be able to provide.

  • [SOLVED] setopt noclobber ! doesn't overwrite file when used in cron

    Basically I have noclobber set to true in .zshrc... this prevents accidently overwriting files with the pipe command...
    When I run the command in a console without the >! command and noclobber set to true it properly detects the file exists and fails to overwrite it.
    curl http://static.die.net/earth/mercator/1600.jpg > /home/geota/geota/.worldmap
    zsh: file exists: /home/geota/geota/.worldmap
    Now when I exchange the pipe command to >! it properly overwrites the file when executed manually in the console... however if I have this command set in my crontab it instead of properly overwriting the file it just pipes it to a file named ! in my home directory...
    # Reload Background Image
    */30 * * * * curl http://static.die.net/earth/mercator/1600.jpg >! /home/geota/geota/.worldmap && xfdesktop
    I have tried a few different slight alterations to no avail such as
    $(curl http://static.die.net/earth/mercator/1600.jpg >! /home/geota/geota/.worldmap)
    `curl http://static.die.net/earth/mercator/1600.jpg >! /home/geota/geota/.worldmap`
    Is there anyway I can get cron to excute the command and overwrite the file without setting noclobber to false?

    crontab provided by arch is dcron which is very basic:
    man crontab wrote:Unlike other crond/crontabs, this crontab does not try to do everything
           under the sun.  Frankly, a shell script is much more able to manipulate
           the  environment  then  cron  and I see no particular reason to use the
           user's shell (from his password entry) to run cron commands  when  this
           requires  special  casing of non-user crontabs, such as those for UUCP.
           When a crontab command is run, this crontab runs it  with  /bin/sh  and
           sets up only three environment variables: USER, HOME, and SHELL.

  • Programs will not overwrite files.

    I attempt to save files, or overwrite files using multiple programs and they will not save as overwrites. They save with (1) behind the original name. Normally this would not be a great issue, but I deal with many files
    at a large volume. I deal with .pdf files. Using Adobe Reader, G.I.M.P. 2, PDF24 Creator, and PDF Split and Merge Basic. This problem only began 1 week ago. I have attempted to remedy with malware scans, disk defrag, virus scans and ultimately formatted and

  • InDesign won't close files

    Hallo everybody,
    I'm new her at InDesign-Scripting-Forum, but I have a great problem, and hope there is somebody out who can help me:
    My problem is that InDesign won't close files which have been opened.
    Just a little Javascript (I have reduced it to the minimum):
    var myFile="1.indd";
    // Open the file
    var myDoc=app.open(File(myFile));
    // Close the file
    myDoc.close(SaveOptions.no);
    if(app.documents.length > 0)
            alert("Still " + app.documents.length + " files opened");
    If this script starts from InDesign Javascript Panel, there are no problems or errors.
    InDesign will open the file (1.indd), and closes the file, and no alert will appear.
    But.... if the Javascript ist copied to the InDesign "startup script" folder, so that InDesign should
    run this script on InDesign Startup,the alert will appear.
    If you are running the script in a loop, just like working with 10 files of a current directory,
    InDesign will show alert of 10 opened files at the end.
    So.. at the end of the script, I want to move the (opened and closed) file to another directory.
    But when InDesign "says" the file is opened, I cannot move or rename the file.
    (It is only possible when running the script manually by the Javascript Panel).
    Can anybody help me, so that I can close the file, or that InDesign will close the file
    when running as a "startup-script"?
    Thanks very much.
    Martin.

    I have 8 MB of RAM. I restarted all the software, but not my computer.
    It is in the left column that I am having the problem.
