Indesign, repeat image to create pattern

Is there a way to tile an image in Indesign, like you can in Photoshop/patterns to Illustrator/patterns? I don't want to create an image, I want to import an image and how it repeat.
Why? To keep file sizes down and to speed up work.

Illustrator is the place to do patterns. The new Pattern creation feature in Illustrator CS6 is totally easy and intuitive.
InDesign has nothing similar natively. There is a pattern maker plug-in from Teacup Software:

    (InDesign CS5) I have created hundreds of InDesign documents incorporating images stored on an external USB connected drive. I did a manual back-up to another drive at regular intervals but far from ideal.
    I now have a network drive which is properly backed-up. I have copied all of the images and folder structure from the USB connected drive to this new drive.
    My question is how I get all of the links in my indd files to point to the new drive. I am aware how to do it one file at a time, but is there a way of doing the same thing over many files/folders at a time?

    It depends on how you organize your work. If you have one folder for images for a document, relinking one image should alert you that other missing images are in the same folder, but this assumes that images are missing. If the links window sees a clear path to the original location of the images, they aren't missing, so that won't work.
    Another thing to try is to select all of the images in the links window and go to the fly-out menu and select Relink To Folder (navigate to the new folder, and you don't even have to select any images by name).
    If you store your images in many different folders for the same document, you might want to either package the document to copy all of the images into one folder (you can specify to only copy images if you like) or use the fly-out in the links window (Utilities>Copy Links To…) and select or create a new images folder.

  • Resizing Images Originally created in InDesign

    I created a Logo in InDesign CS 5.5. It contains a number of different elements and I grouped all of the lements together. The original size of the Logo is approximately 15.5 X 7.5. I also formatted the interior of a book in InDesign. I copied and pasted the logo on the title page of the book, and resized the logo to around 6.75 X 3.25 by changing the percentage of the image. I am unable to change the width and height directly because it gives me a “Requested Value is not a Legal Dimension” message. After sending the interior to the printer for review, they replied indicating that the image was less than 300 DPI. Is there a way to manage or control the resolution of images originally created in InDesign so that when they are resized, the DPI will still be a desired resolution for print?

    Thanks to all who replied.
    If I understand correctly, I can control how my effects are rasterized by modifying the Transparency Flattener Presets, which is located in InDesign CS5.5 under "Edit" at the top of the screen. There is already an option for HIgh Resolution and it will Rasterize Line Art and Text Resolution to 1200 ppi and Gradeint and Mesh Resolution to 300 ppi. In addition, I think the Medium Resolution would work for me because it will rasterize Line Art and Text Resolution to 300 ppi.
    Furthermore, in order for those effects to take effect, I understand that when exporting to a print PDF, I need to export with the compatibility as Acrobat 4 (PDF 1.3) in order to be able to modify the Transparency Flattener to Medium or High Resolution.
    On the other hand, since I was exporting to a print PDF wiht the compatibility as Acrobat 5 or higher, I assume that it was doing this at the Low resolution, which was 288 ppi, which is the exact resolution that the printer cited. It is my understanding that if you create images with effects applied like Bevel and emboss, drop shadow, etc., and exporting them to a print pdf, it would be best to export as Acrobat 4 (PDF 1.3) in order to control the Transparency Flattener Presets.

  • CS5 only defining a strip of an image as a pattern

    When I define a pattern from an ordinary colour image there is no problem - the full image is available as a pattern.  But when I try to define an image which is black and white only a strip of the BW image is available as a pattern.  When I add a strip of colour to a BW image and define a pattern from it, only the area of the colour is available as a pattern. How can I create a full pattern from a low contrast BW image?
    I must be doing something wrong.  Grateful for advice, please.

    Thanks.  I am trying to define a pattern from an image of watercolour paper texture.  It is already rgb.  The source image was created in another program - a matter of applying a native (to that program) surface texture to an image filled with white. Below is the source image substantially reduced in size:
    Here is what the strip of pattern looks like:
    I want to use it (and others that I make) to supplement Photoshops available artists' textures.  The problem may well be somthing to do with repeated patterns as Chris has speculated, but I have found that so far, 20" at 72ppi gives me a full image, whereas 23" at 72ppi doesn't.

  • Center-align created pattern swatch

    Hi there
    When creating patterns with for example very easy dimensions like the artboard 400 x 400 px etc, and everything right placed, as you can see on the print screens, after having created the pattern, it never aligns center-aligned like I would like it too. Very annoying.
    who can help? Thanks!!
    Left: the original positioning before creating the pattern.
    Right: the result of a perfect square, center aligned to the artboard and with the swatch applied, not too pretty he?

    Hi CarlosCanto
    You're right. So far so good, but this still doesn't help me getting a nice pattern centered on the artboard?
    The image here is an example of the actual pattern I would like to use The smaller image is a print screen of the actual composition of elements in Illustrator which I made the pattern of.
    Is there an easy solution for this?
    Thanks!

  • Bringing pdf from InDesign Photoshop and back to InDesign leaves image and text extremely blurry

    I'm running CS4 on a Macbook Pro, OS X.
    I created a booklet in InDesign, and I want to display it as though the booklet had been photographed from above. For multiple reasons, taking pictures of the actual booklet didn't work, so I used pictures of a blank booklet.
    I saved the files in InDesign as pdf, then placed them on the photoshop file of the blank booklet. I changed the layer display from regular to "Multiply" so the shadowing on the booklet pages shows through. They look great in Photoshop-- the images are still vectors, from InDesign, and the files are at 300 ppi, at the exact dimensions for print.
    I save them from Photoshop as pdf, and place the finished pdf in InDesign to lay out for display. However, in InDesign, the images are extremely pixellated and distorted-- for example, letters are missing from words, hairlines have strange gaps that are not in the original file, and the overall look is very poor.
    I have tried saving as jpg, psd, pdf, eps, tiff, flattened tiff-- you name it. I cannot figure out why the file looks bad in InDesign.
    May be relevant: The file is a composite-- I photoshopped multiple spreads of the blank booklet, placed, and used layer masks to make them look as though they were laying on the same surface and had been photographed together. These layers are flattened, and the placed files are each in their own layer.

    Hi, I can't follow your post...I suggest taking a screenshot in photoshop of your image detail at 100% actual pixels, along with your layers pallet:
    I save them from Photoshop as pdf, and place the finished pdf in InDesign to lay out for display. what compression settings are you selecting in photoshop> save> Ps PDF (screen shots are very usefull here to make your point)?

  • Corrected coding please for repeating image

    I have searched the internet/the tutortials and cannot get the correct coding for a repeat image vertically in a table on the left hand side of the webpage.  I believe the coding should be repeat-y but I tried all the examples and could not get it to work.  I finally found a way to get it on but I know there is better coding.  This is what I have so far:

          </table>

    I do not want a complete page covered with this design, merely the left-hand border side.
    as mentioned background-repeat:repeat-y; will do just that.
    Some of us, especially in this economic times, cannot afford to spend thousands to have a website created, so we do the best we can.  While I agree tables are difficult for they were indeed designed to place data, and I have eliminated tables where ever I could, this was the only way I could get the result needed.
    agreed times are tough, but seriously working in tables adds more time, more headaches and therefore costs more money.
    Sorry to have bothered you.  Shame Dreamweaver was bought out by Adobe but then, there are other programs; perhaps there forums will have more tolerance for one of us old duffers.
    whats with being all touchy? you asked for "correct coding please for repeating image?"
    and thats what I gave you.
    apart from that I mentioned not to use tables. which is a good thing to take on board.
    for example
    1. Tables are usually more bytes of markup. (Longer to download, and more bytes of traffic for the host.)
    2. Tables usually prevent incremental rendering. (Takes longer for the user to see anything on the page.)
    3. Tables may require you to chop single, logical images into multiple ones. (This makes redesigns total hell, and also increases page load time [more http requests and more total bytes].)
    4. Tables break text copying on some browsers. (That's annoying to the user.)
    5. Tables prevent certain layouts from working within them (like height:100% for child elements of <td>). (They limit what you can actually do in terms of layout.)
    6. Once you know CSS, table-based layouts usually take more time to implement. (A little effort up-front learning CSS pays off heavily in the end.)
    7. Tables are semantically incorrect markup for layout. (They describe the presentation, not the content.)
    8. Tables make life hell for those using screen readers. (Not only do you get the other benefits of CSS, you're also helping out the blind/partially-sighted. This is a Good Thing.)
    9. Tables lock you into the current design and make redesigns MUCH harder than semantic HTML+CSS. (Have you seen CSS Zen Garden?)

  • System Image Utility - Create User - Activate Remote Management

    When creating an image with system image utility, based on a DVD image instead of a cloned image, I cannot create a user and activate Remote Management.
    I have created an installer package with Apple Remote Desktop that is supposed to do both, however it doesn't work. I do not get an error, but no user is created.
    I have tried a post-install script however the dscl command is not recognized even if I put the path /usr/bin/dscl.
    I even tried to use a popular package out there called "createUser" but that fails as well.
    Has anyone had any luck with this when trying to make a moduler image with System Image Utility?

    ok here's the deal: i created a folder in my OSX server home directory labelled "images" and keep our multiple images there. although you CAN have your images on other drives or on the network, that would take a LOOOOOOOONG time to do the data transfer to the invisible netboot folder on your server. my advice: keep local copies of all images. save a ton of time for yourself, eh?

  • I CAN NO LONGER EDIT REPEATING EVENTS (BIRTHDAYS) CREATED IN iCAL

    I have many repeating events (birthdays) created in iCal. Recently, whenever I call up these events for editing, and when I save them, I get the message (for example) "Access to “Mom's birthday” in “Birthdays” in account “[username]@me.com” is not permitted.
    The server responded:
    “HTTP/1.1 403 Forbidden”
    to operation CalDAVWriteEntityQueueableOperation
    I then get the choices to "Go Offline" or "Revert to Server".
    Then, if I click "Revert to Server", the entire event disappears.
    Can anyone let me know how to solve this problem?

  • Image = JAI.create("stream",bass) problem

    I get the exception "Stream - Parameter value`s class (com.sun.media.jai.codec.ByteArraySeekableStream) is not an instance of the parameter class (com.sun.media.jai.codec.SeekableStream) for parameter "stream".
    " with the following code - not sure why - thanks in advance
    ByteArraySeekableStream bass = new ByteArraySeekableStream
    (fileData.toByteArray());
    image = JAI.create("stream",bass);
    Steve

    I got this to work, but the above method should also work:
    ByteArraySeekableStream bass = new ByteArraySeekableStream(imageData);
    if ( imageFormat.compareToIgnoreCase(ImageAttributes.Format_JPEG) == 0 )
    JPEGImageDecoder imageDecoder = new JPEGImageDecoder(bass,null);
    RenderedImage ri = imageDecoder.decodeAsRenderedImage();
    retValue = PlanarImage.wrapRenderedImage(ri);
    }

  • System image utility : creating Leopard & SL Netinstall images to share on Lion

    Hi!
    I have recently upgraded to Lion server from SL server, our server had 1 main purpose: host Leopard & SL Netinstall images as well as some netboot diagnostic drives.
    It seems however that with a fresh install of Lion Server that trying to create a netinstall image from anything other then Lion doesnt work, even whipping out the old 10.6.3 install DVD mounts on the system but image utility shows no valid source.
    i remember going from tiger sever to leopard that i could no longer make tiger images, and had to run from a tiger system to create them, but when i was running SL, i was able to share leopard images without issue.
    So, is there anyway i can (without having to reinstall SL server ) i can create fresh netinstall images of 10.5 & 10.6OS's for my shiny new Lion server to share?
    now unfortunatley the leopard & SL images i had previously are gone (a HDD crash giving me reason to upgrade) (yeah yeah i know, backups.. ) but i thought i would just reimage the files again as that is this servers only purpose.
    Thank you kindly in advance, any help appreciated.
    Richard

    i know that was the case in Leopard and Snow Leopard but i just mounted a leopard image to create a new netrestore on my lion server.  i was not able to boot any of my images created on Leopard or SL when running Lion Server.  I assume i need to recreate the images on Lion.  Right now my Lion server is using a leopard image as the source to create a netrestore i can push on the Lion server.

  • System Image Utility "Create" problem

    We have a new Xserve that we're finally going to be available to use for Open Directory/Net Boot/Net Install/etc in our coporate network. So, this is all new to me but I'm trying to make a Net Install image to export to the server.
    My G5 workstation (Mac OS X 10.4.6, but the imaged drive has 10.4.5) has two hard drives, one of which has our corporate image of software installed on it, "clean". The other hard drive is my own with lots of extra software and customization. I'm trying to use the System Image Utility (v. 10.4.4 (251)) to create an image. I am an administrator user on my computer. After configuring all the appropriate settings, I push the "Create" button and it appears to start working, prompts me for a location to save the actual image itself, creates a folder with the default name and then nothing happens. The spinning gear would seem to indicate that the System Image Utility is doing something, but the "Create" button continues to throb blue. I can click "Create" again and another folder is created when I'm promted to save the image and it continues to remain empty. All I can do is click "Cancel" and start over.
    I was quite frustrated until I logged into my computer as the local administrator user (this user is employed when we're configuring a workstation for the first time to give it the correct file sharing name and bind it to the Active Directory). Creating an image works just find while I'm logged in as the local administrator. (At least as far as creating/exporting the image, getting Net Boot to turn on the Xserve is proving a challenge.)
    So, is there something preventing network administrator users from creating images? I'd really rather have my own e-mail open and running as well as my own bookmarks while I'm working on a project like this, but it doesn't seem possible. Any tips would be appreciated.
