Indesign resetting preference

Hi everyone, every time a restart my mac, indeisgn resets preferences, so dynamic spelling, measurements etc are all reverted to default.
However my panels layout remains.
Can anyone advise how I can stop this happening? (Mountain lion 10.8.2, aka the Turd)
Cheers

Actually I did install OSX Server because I have been having no end of issues with time machine, server corrects this issue.
PErhaps this has caused issues? To be honest the whole system 'feels' unstable if you know what I mean, aperture keeps falling over and it goes on a spotlight index a lot!

  • Resetting Preferences the eazy way

It seems the universal cure for just about any problem in InDesign is "resetting the preferences". It sounds like Adobe decided to add this option in a rather obfuscated way -- something you could have customer support tell clients over the phone, and impress the hell out of them. Well, it bit them right back, as it seems everyone needs to do that every now and then.
To reset preferences, start your InDesign
b pressing Shift, Control, and Alt keys down.
Now, with these keys down, you cannot start the program by double-clicking, so you have to start it and
    i then
whack those keys as fast as you can. As InDesign should ask you on startup whether you wish to reset or not, this expert advice is usually followed by "... if it doesn't, you weren't fast enough."
A tip for the slow of hand: locate the program on your desktop or in your Start menu, press-and-hold the three magic buttons, right-click InDesign with the mouse and select "Open".

The usual caveats about saving all your presets to external files FIRST so you don't lose them continue to apply (you do that by selecting them in the various "define" dialogs and clicking "save"). Resetting preferences removes all the custom stuff you added (though your workspaces and keyboard shortcut sets will be safe) and you'll need to reload document and printer presets after doing this.
You can also find the two files InDesign Defaults and InDesign SavedData in your user profile (you'll need to show hidden files in Explorer) and simply rename them with ID closed. They'll be replaced, but not destroyed, when ID restarts (without fumbling with the keyboard) and if it should turn out new prefs don't fix whatever was wrong, you can shut down ID and go back to Explorer, delete the new files, and rename the old ones back.
Where, you ask, are these files? With so many versions of InDesign and Windows it's getting too complex to list all of the locations (but they will always be in your user profile). In CS and CS2 they will be together under something like Application Settings\Adobe\InDesign\[version]\ for CS3 the defaults will be there, and the saved data will be somewhere like Local Settings\Application Settings\Adobe\InDesign\[version]\caches, and CS4 adds another level (folder) with your language, like en-US, to the path. A file search in Explorer that includes hidden files should turn them up wherever they are hiding.
Finally, once you have a set of defaults that seems to be what you want and working smoothly, go find those two files and save copies somewhere safe (and someplace you'll remember). Use the copies to replace the current set any time you have doubts.

  • Bridge CC freezes and I cannot reset preferences

Built a new PC with Win 8.1. Downloaded CC. Bridge, which I use professionally, keeps stalling. Using arrow keys on keyboard to navigate photos doesn't work:  push an directional arrow key and Bridge goes into clocking mode (freezes while mouse cursor spins). Bridge has crashed multiple times causing my PC to reboot.
The Adobe Help suggests resetting Preferences by pushing Shift+Ctrl+Alt. I do that and Bridge goes into clocking mode, but the reset preferences dialog never appears.
    Steps I've taken so far:
The CC component is installed on my SSD drive, while all of the CC apps are on my WD Black hard drive. I noticed Bridge is using cache on the SSD. I created a new cache dir on the WD hard drive, but that didn't resolve anything.
I disabled all startup scripts. No improvement.
I uninstalled and re-installed Bridge. No improvement.

Having spent my entire day troubleshooting, I have determined that I am combating 2 separate issues:
    1) Bridge CC freezing when navigating menus and photos, lengthy freezing when navigating photos in Content window with arrow keys. <-- RESOLVED
    2) Bridge CC and LightBridge CC crashing and causing PC to reboot when attempting to utilize cache containing RAW photos.
For #1, I have nearly identified the culprit. I removed the brand new Gigabyte GeForce GTX 660 video card and uninstalled the GeForce 344.11 driver set, and am now using the onboard video (Intel Graphics HD). I re-installed Bridge CC and now the freezing has completely vanished. So the issue is either the latest driver or the GeForce card itself, or both. I plan to return the card.
For #2, I think the issue is totally associated to the Adobe cache mechanism. Screenshot of LR error after LR crashed and PC rebooted...

  • Help with Sort sequence and reset preferences

    Hi,
I have checked the "sort" checkboxes and the "sort sequence" in my first 5 columns of the sql report. The sequence are straight 1,2,3,4,5.
I have also create two buttons. The first one that will trigger a pl/sql that would execute RESET_USER_PREFERENCES built-in package, and a second button that just submit. The page submit to itself by default.
It appears that the Reset Preferences does not follow the "sort sequences". Take a look at: http://htmldb.oracle.com/pls/otn/f?p=15031:2:
Check what happen with the second column OBJECT NAME: I expect to see CUSTOM_AUTH first and then CUSTOM_HASH second once you Reset User Preferences. Interesting is that when I just press the refresh button, then i get what I want, but i think that is just coincidence as there is not guarantee that the data are going to be displayed in that order once you start deleting and inserting in the middle.
Any help in order to understand the "sort sequences" concept is appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Indesign CS6 preference file location

I am having trouble finding the InDesign CS6 preference file on my Mac. I don't have a library folder under my username but there is one for guest and macadmin. Is it hidden? How do I view this folder?
    Macintosh: Hard Drive/Users/<USER>/Library/Preferences/Adobe InDesign/<Version #>/<Language>/

Thank you. I was able to delete the file however it has not fixed my issues with indesign.
I can open InDesign on the guest account and everything loads fine. If I try to open it on my account I get the error "cannot open resource file" and my full preferences aren't loading. I am trying to get to InDesign>Preferences>Type and my full preferences are showing.

  • Is there a script that will reset preferences in Illustrator?

I'm using Illustrator CS6 and Illustrator CC on both Mac and PC. Holding down Ctrl-Alt-Shift or Command-Option-Shift while launching Illustrator does not work to reset the preferences.
Does anyone know an easy way to reset preferences?

Move the complete folder out of there:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/kb/preference-file-location-illustrator.html
You can trash it immediately, but you can also wait if this move solves your proble and then maybe delete it afterwards.

  • Reset preferences on next launch

How do I reset my preferences? My "add glow" is giving me a dark grey, grainy effect instead of the usual glow effect. I tried ctrl, shift and alt but nothing comes up and when I go to my general preferences the "reset preferences on next launch" button is not there.
    Please help

    Try the following steps:
    1. Launch Welcome Screen
    2. Press Ctrl+Alt+Shift (Command+Option+Shift on Mac). Click on big Editor button.
    3. It will launch a dialog to reset preferences
See if this works for you.

  • Colour Picker gone, resetting Preferences didn't do anything

Windows installed an update, and when I opened PS CS6, my colour picker was gone. Instead I have tiny sliding bars which are of no use to me at all.
I've tried resetting preferences, holding Ctrl+Alt+Shift didn't do anything, and I've tried for a few minutes to get the dialogue box up. I manually searched my hard drive for a preference file, deleted it, and that didn't do anything either. I went into preferences and the Adobe colour picker is selected. I get it when I click on the colour boxes in the lower left corner, but it's no longer showing up as an option on my task bar like it was yesterday. I have no option to change the currently sliders to anything but different colour settings.
None of the solutions I've read have helped so far.

Which version of windows are you using?
    Could you post a screenshot?

  • ReSetting preferences for a project?

I think things got scrambled, and  I need to go back and reset preferences for a project. Shot on Canon 5D II, want to work at 1920x1080.
Does anyone know of a good online source for the way things should be reset at this point?
    Many thanks.

What is wrong with the project?
You could use MediaManager and use the 'create offline' option rather than copy or move. Then create a new project and set the sequence settings to what you want.
Or just use cmd-0 to change the sequence settings directly.
That's just my immediate responses based on a lack of info.

  • Force Quit resets preferences and presets in InDesign 5.5

I just installed InDesign 5.5 awhile back and got all my printer presets and general preferences set up. I began to notice when I "force quit" the program they all disappear (or return to the default) and it is a hassle to reset everything especially all the printer presets. I've stopped quiting the program through "force quit", but still on a occassion when the program freezes then I occassionally have to "force quit". I didn't have this problem with the previous verson of InDesign. What can I do to keep my preferences and printer presets from resetting after a "force quit"

If you can't find another solution you could try the applescript below. I use it to roll out user settings in the studio, but it is also useful for very quickly replacing corrupt prefs files. It will overwrite whatever is there.
    # Indesign CS5.5 preferences
set sourcePrefsFolder to POSIX file "/Volumes/Server/Folder/Folder/Etc" -- change this to your source folder
set destPrefsFolder to (path to preferences folder from user domain as text) & "Adobe InDesign:"
    set checkDestPrefsFolder to existsItem(destPrefsFolder)
-- checks the existence of the preference folder – this will not be there if InDesign has never been started
-- if it's not there it creates one
if checkDestPrefsFolder is equal to false then -- i.e. the User's InDesign prefs folder is not present
        tell application "Finder"
            make new folder at (path to preferences folder from user domain as text) with properties {name:"Adobe InDesign"}
duplicate sourcePrefsFolder to destPrefsFolder with replacing
        end tell
    else
        tell application "Finder"
duplicate sourcePrefsFolder to destPrefsFolder with replacing
        end tell
    end if
-- handler to check for existence of an item
    on existsItem(itemToTest)
        try
            itemToTest as alias
            set myBoolean to true
        on error
            set myBoolean to false
        end try
        return myBoolean
    end existsItem

  • Reset preferences by InDesign while installing a new version of plugin

    Hello,
Our company developed a Plug-In for InDesign.
This works on InDesign CS5.5 und CS6 for Mac OSX and Windows.
Currently we have developed a new version of this Plug-In.
Old version 1.6 and new version 2.0.
On an InDesign with Plug-In version 1.6 we have trouble if we trying to install version 2.0.
Here will be reset the preferences by InDesign after successfully installation version 2.0 and at start the InDesign.
After some experiments i have found out, that in “InDesign Defaults” and “InDesign Saved” files exists an entry regarding the plug-In.
After starting my Plug-In 1.6 in InDesign the entry will be added to these files. If i uninstall the Plug-In and start/stop the InDesign i find still the plug-in entry in “InDesign Defaults” and “InDesign Saved” files.
While starting the InDesign after installation the Plug-In 2.0 detect the InDesign a conflict in “InDesign Defaults” and reset the Preferences. See below image
Can i cleanup these files after uninstalling the old Plug-In without losing my Preferences?
Can i prevent the input of the Plug-In entry to these files?

I suggest you re-post this over in the InDesign SDK forum. I'll leave it here as well, but it's very unlikely anyone here will have an answer for you.
