InDesign Server crashes on PDF export

I've narrowed the problem down to the PDF presets we have defined.
We have two PDF Presets that we use with our InDesign Server, one for low quality and one for high quality.
When exporting a document using our high quality preset, IDS will sometimes crash altogether and will have to be restarted. We've never had this problem using our low quality preset.
The only differences between the two presets are the image compression settings. Our HQ preset is set to 200PPI for color & grayscale images, while our LQ preset is set to 72 for color and 120 for grayscale images. Also, Image quality is set to High on our HQ and Medium on our LQ preset. Those are the ONLY descrepancies between the two.
Does IDS have problems with exporting higher quality PDFs? Is this a known issue with ID?
I can lower the quality of the PDF and it seems to fix the issue, but I'd like to know why this happens. Also, the whole purpose of exporting in HQ is to have a "high quality" PDF.
Production Server Hardware -
Windows Server 2008 R2 x64
Two of these processors - Intel Xeon CPU X5570 @ 2.93 GHz - 8 cores
20 GB of memory
Software Running -
Adobe InDesign Server CS5 v 7.0.3

I don't use the server edition, but the regular version certainly doesn't have a problem with high resolution. I have once or twice, though, seen a problem with a custom preset created in an earlier version. This seems to have disappeared for me with the 7.0.3 update, though.
Prests being as easy to creat as they are, though, you might want to try remaking any problem presets, starting from one of the canned presets if possible, and see if it makes a difference.

  • InDesign CS4 crashes during PDF export

    Computer is a Dell laptop that operates on Windows XP Professional. I am putting together our image- and text-heavy company newsletter. I have been able to export as Press-Quality PDF withing the past week or two. I made a change today and now get an error when I try to export to PDF (Press Quality, 4 pages, spreads, all marks, full bleeds). I've been able to isolate the problem to pages 3 & 4, since I can export pages 1 & 2 without any issue but cannot export either 3 or 4 seperately, or together in a spread. I've tried the save-as-INX-and-reopen trick to no avail. I've tried saving it onto my local drive, rather than the network drive it was on before. Still crashes at the same point.
    The error I get says that "InDesign.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost. For more information about this error, click here." And I have the option to "Debug" or "Close." When I click the "click here" link at the end of the sentence, I get a window with the following info:
    "Error Signature
    AppName: indesign.exe       AppVer:6.0.0.352      ModName:transparency.rpln
    ModVer: 6.0.0.352   Offset: 0006f14d
    To view technical information about the error report, click here."
    And if I click on that "click here" link, I get a very long  window of "Error Report Contents" that I cannot copy-paste, and would probably take me a good hour to retype here.
    Any thoughts? I do have several transparencies on page 3, and a gradient stroke on an object that spans both 3 & 4. All links have been embedded and prior to embedding showed no signs of warnings or issues. Links include JPEGs, Photoshop files, and Illustrator files.

    Finally found the troublemaker!!! You were right. I deleted all links, and it exported the PDF just fine. I went back and tried deleting single links at a time and found the one that, when deleted, everything else exported to PDF just fine. I opened that JPEG in Photoshop and cropped it to the exact size I needed, since I hadn't done this before, resaved under a new name, put it back in my InDesign file and everything just exported beautifully.
    HUUUUGE sigh of relief over here. THANK YOU!
    And next time I will bypass the wasted morning of pulling out hair and running in circles, and just come straight here.

  • InDesign CS6 crashes during PDF export

    I have been attempting to export a magazine design to PDF using the dialogue in InDesign CS6 (for Mac). The PDF gets to around 90% in the background tasks panel and crashes every time. I have removed preferences, reinstalled InDesign, upgraded to Suitcase Fusion 4 and am still having problems. I have even tried printing as a .ps file and it crashes during that as well. A few weeks ago I had a similar problem but found that I was opening CS5 .indd files and not resaving them as CS6 .indd files before exporting. Once I resaved/renamed them in CS6 it appeared to fix the problem. Now I can't seem to fix this one. I have exported other files and it works fine. I even packaged the .idml file and a colleague of mine opened it up in CS5.5 and was able to export it. I thought it might have something to do with corrupt fonts but I disabled all fonts and still couldn't get it to export. Any help or advice would be much appreciated as I am on a deadline. • InDesign CS5 Crashes on PDF Export if Suitcase Fusion 3 Auto Activation is on

    I just started having a problem after upgrading  from SF2 to 3 and using InDesign CS5. My exports to PDF were all  crashing as soon as the PDF creation background process started. I tried  all kinds of tests and troubleshooting to figure out what was causing  the problem as it was sudden and erratic.
    Then I noticed that all the documents crashing were using fonts I  had activated with SF 3, so I created a new document with a simple  system font and it exported OK. Then a font installed activated  permanently via SF and still would crash.
    I closed SF and reopen InDesign with a document using the SF  permanently activated fonts, still would crash. It wasn't until I turned  off SF3 Auto Activation in Preferences that the crashing ceased. I can  now have SF3 open, activate fonts and see them in InDesign and export  successfully without crash as long as that preference is unchecked.
    This should be fixed in the next updated I hope as I like the auto activation feature.
    Just posted as well on Extensis Forums:
    http://forums.extensis.com/jforum/posts/list/3533.page

    I have also had a crash on export problem recently. I went through the suggestions in this thread and searched others.
    Then I stepped through a few things in my INDD.
    Deleted the suspect page. Export worked.
    Brought the page back. Export crashed.
    Looked at all the text on the page. I had 4 boxes with bulleted text.
    I converted the bullets to text and the export went ahead with no problem.
    I turned the bulleted list back into a real bulleted list and the export crashed again.
    Go figure.

  • InDesign Server Developer Edition, PDF export problem

    I'm currently testing our application on IDS CS5, using Developer Edition. Whenever I attempt to export a PDF, I receive the following error:
    Wed Mar  2 10:17:29 2011 WARN [server] Colour in one or more placed graphics cannot be represented as CMYK.  Non-CMYK colour is not compliant with the PDF/X-1a standard. You can click OK to produce a valid PDF, but it will not be a PDF/X-1a compliant file.
    Wed Mar  2 10:17:29 2011 ERROR [server] JavaScript Error!
    Error Number: 2
    Error String: User cancelled this action.
    Engine: main
    Line: 1428
    Source: this.document.exportFile(ExportFormat.pdfType, documentFile);
    Interpreter: CS4 (6.0)
    This happens even with a completely blank document. It works fine if I export JPGs or an INDD file from the same file. I'm guessing this is due to the watermark that Developer Edition places on every page. I'm fine with that, but not actually being able to export an X-1a PDF makes testing quite tricky.
    Any suggestions?

    I get the same thing:
        private void exportPDF(Document document, PDFType pdfType) throws IdsException {
            String pdfPath = this.outputPrefix + pdfType.getFileEnding();

                    OptArg.noString(),
                    OptArg.makeBoolean(true));
            addExportedPreview(pdfPath);
            log.debug("Exported PDF: " + pdfPath);
        private PDFExportPreset getPDFExportPreset(Document document, PDFType pdfType) throws IdsException {
            Application application = getApplication();
            PDFExportPreset preset = application.getNamedChildPDFExportPreset(pdfType.getExportPresetName());
            preset.setCropMarks(pdfType.isCropMarks());
            preset.setUseDocumentBleedWithPDF(pdfType.isBleed());
            if (pdfType.isBleed() || pdfType.isCropMarks()) {
                preset.setPageMarksOffset(UnitConverter.toUnit(getPageMarksOffset(document)));
            } else {
                preset.setPageMarksOffset(UnitConverter.toUnit(Length.zero()));
            return preset;
    Editing the profile to use none for standard compliance allows the export of the PDF.

  • InDesign CS5.5 Problem - Crash during PDF export (Runtime Error)

    Hello,
    I'm working with Adobe CS5.5 and have a problem with the PDF-export of some of my projects.
    The problematic projects are rather big (44-124 pages) with lots of pictures.
    The error I get during export is:
    [Headline:] Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
    Runtime Error!
    Program: C:\...
    This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
    Please contact the application's support team for more information
    The program is not specified in the error.
    Export works fine for these files on my collegues computer with the same settings (hardware and software are almost a match).
    Microsoft Runtime Library was completely reinstalled without solving the problem.
    Any suggestions how to solve this problem?
    Thank you very much

  • InDesign server crashes every time when calling deleteEmptyPages in script

    We are evaluting InDesign Server CS6 on a Windows server environment. We have an idml file, sample xml file that is tagged to specific frames inside the idml file and a script file for execution on the server. This script opens the idml file using the app.open api, imports the xml file and export the ID file to a PDF. Because we have table content with variable row count, we are using the smart text reflow functionality. Setting the text preferences with smart text reflow appears to be working but we also want to delete the empty second page when the content is less than a page. So, we also tried using the deleteEmptyPages property document's textPreferences. When this is set to true and the script is executed on the ID server using the sampleclient, the server crashes with the following message. When I do the same thing in the InDesign UI using the preferences options, it works as expected.
    The script looks like below - is this the right way to do it?
    var myInddFile = app.scriptArgs.get("idfile"); //"X:/IDFiles/AutoFlow.indd";
    var myXmlFile = app.scriptArgs.get("xmlfile"); //"X:/IDFiles/deleteme.xml";
    var myOutputOptions = "[Smallest File Size]";
    var myPDFPreset = app.pdfExportPresets.itemByName(myOutputOptions);
    var myDoc = app.open (File(myInddFile), OpenOptions.OPEN_COPY);
    myDoc.xmlImportPreferences.ignoreWhitespace = true;
    myDoc.textPreferences.smartTextReflow = true;
    //myDoc.textPreferences.addPages = AddPageOptions.END_OF_STORY;
    //myDoc.textPreferences.limitToMasterTextFrames = true;
    myDoc.importXML (File(myXmlFile));
    //uncommenting this line causes the ID server to crash
    //myDoc.textPreferences.deleteEmptyPages = true;
    var myOutputFile = app.scriptArgs.get("outputfile");//File("X:/IDFiles/sampleX.pdf")
    myDoc.exportFile (ExportFormat.PDF_TYPE,myOutputFile, myPDFPreset)

    Thanks Harbs. We are looking at full automation and so removing the pages manually is not an option. But I did find a script at InTools http://in-tools.com/article/scripts-blog/script-of-the-day-jan-24-2010/ that helps with automating the removal of empty pages. This script appears to be a nice workaround for server side usage. I used it on my document with multiple column text frames and it is removing the empty page as expected. If there is a better way to do this, let me know. Thanks.

  • Best way to get SharePoint workflow to trigger InDesign XML refresh and PDF export?

    What is the best way to get a SharePoint workflow to trigger the refresh of an XML datasource within an InDesign document, and generate a PDF export? The datasource would be hosted by SharePoint.
    Would InDesign Server be required?

    My understanding of the license is that Adobe requires you to use InDesign Server for this sort of thing.
    But the implementation is probably the same either way. Periodically poll, or find some way to trigger it.

  • Indesign CS5 - Problems with PDF-Export

    Hello community,
    we do have a problem with Indesign CS5 and exporting data into PDF. It is about that logo on that white surface, which doesnt come along with the rest after the pdf-export. What we did was: We created that white surface in Indesign itself, put an effect on it with the Indesign effect gallery and then imported the logo in the surface ... the logo itself is .psd data. So, if we export it into pdf like that, it is just dissapeared. Does anyone have had a similar problem and what can be done about it?
    By the way ... if you put, for example, a simple backgroundshadow on a picture ... done also with the Indesign effect gallery, then you get just a white surface instead of the shadow, after the export into pdf. It does maybe correlate with the other problem ... not sure. Any suggestions?
    Thank you very much for your help and kind regards ...

    I would create the entire logo, including the white background, in Illustrator, save as PDF and place that in ID.

  • InDesign Server crashing on hyperlinks - HYPERLINKS.RPLN

    When trying to access properties of a hyperlink it causes InDesign to crash. I can assign properties of the hyperlink but if I try and retrieve properties it hangs and crashes resulting in the error below. I'm using InDesign Server 64bit version 7.0.4.553. What's interesting is this works completely fine when testing using InDesign CS5 client version.
    I have used Extend script toolkit to try and debug the issue but you can't even use the databrowser to look at the hyperlink properties as it'll crash there as well. But if I debug using toolkit with client version of InDesign it works fine. It really seems like an issue with InDesign Server and I'm not sure what I can do to work around/fix this problem.
    Example script -
    var myDoc = app.open([document path]);
    for (i = 0; i < myDoc.hyperlinks.length; i++)
         var myHyperlink = myDoc.hyperlinks[i];
         var newDestination = myHyperlink.destination; // - this causes indesign to crash

    Any help would be great! I can post more information if needed.

    I think I may have found the problem...
    It appears that the particular document I'm working with has a shared link that is contained in another document (in InDesign if you look at the hyperlink details it is a shared destination and for "document" it specifies a different document then the current one. This would probably happen when the hyperlink is copied from a different document. When trying to access that shared link it is unable to get the properties of it because there is actually no reference to it as the other document isn't open on the server.
    This is an interesting problem because I'm not sure where to go with this... I need to be able to get the hyperlink but with the given scenario I can't figure out a way to do that.

  • Can't InDesign Server make a jpg export of a large page? (4000x4500mm)

    Hi guys,
    I don't have InDesign Server installed so thats why I ask here.
    I'm using a solution where an InDesign server should return with a jpg of an InDesign document, but for some reason it doesn't work with this document:
    http://ge.tt/8w1EmaP/v/0
    Can anyone clarify if InDesign Server really has a problem in exporting larger dimensions of if it is just the solution which I'm uploading to, that has a problem?
    Thanks in advance!

    Ole

    It also depends on the Resolution of the JPG. I just exported a 72 ppi JPG from InDesign desktop. However, it would not export a 2400 ppi JPG (maximum size exceeded).

  • CS2 crashes with PDF export

    I've got a 42-page file that, as of this morning, won't export to a PDF.
    The export crashes around page 29-30, and examination of those pages
    found nothing out of the ordinary. The crash sometimes refers to memory
    locations, but it usually just reports "cannot export" and freezes.
    I'm not using that Suitcase thing previously mentioned, no special font
    managers.

    Try exporting pages 1-29 to PDF. Did that crash? Then export single pages 29, 30 and more and see if the PDF cannot export on any of those pages. You might be able to work out which page has a problem. The page could be looking for an image that isn't linked correctly, or an invisible item that's looking for something that isn't there.

  • Indesign CS5 crashes trying to export from PDF to epub

    I am trying to use Export for command to send a pdf file placed into In Design to epub format.
    The program crashes immeadiately.
    The PDF is 120 pp and includes a TOC. The OS is Win 7 Pro.

    What are you trying to accomplish? Are you thinking that this PDF will be converted to an EPUB with live text?
    It won’t. You will have an epub with 120 JPG images and no TOC at all.
    I don’t know why it’s crashing but it doesn’t matter anyway since, I imagine, you are under the false impression that you will get a functional epub doing this.

  • InDesign CS3 crashes when I export a PDF. I have updated it to 5.0.4 but it still crashed. I bought it as part of the Design Premium pack. How do I uninstall InDesignCS3 and reinstall the original software?

    Hi, the title says it all
    I've been trying to find out on the Adobe site how to uninstall CS3 Design Premium and then reinstall the original software in the hope that this will eliminate the crashing problem, which only started yesterday.
    You're help will be very much appreciated.
    Alison

    Run the cleaner tool and reinstall.
    Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
    Just be aware that none of this will matter if you are using a newer version of e.g. Acrobat that by ways of updates may introduce/ have introduced an incompatible version of one of the PDF libraries commonly shared and used by all Adobe programs. you have to tread lightly and be careful...
