Indesign Server Licensing

I am looking into purchasing a 3rd party product for doing dynamic date publishing using Indesign. The vendor is telling me in order to be complaint with Adobe I need to purchase an Indesign Server license even though the 3rd party application doesnt need it. It will basically sit on the shelf and collect dust. The vendor isnt even looking for us to purchase Indesign Server through, so its not like they are making any money.
Just doesnt make sense on why I would need to purchase it. I have tried calling Adobe sales reps numerous times and either no one knows the answer or I never get called back from the people who are supposed to know the answer.
I figured this was the best board to post this on, not sure if it would be better somewhere else.
Does anyone have any insight into this? Any response is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

I had trouble - the instructions send you down some confusing paths - but I got it working eventually. The "Installation Instructions.pdf" file indicates you need to activate the trial with Adobe Provisioning Toolkit Enterprise Edition (APTEE), but sends you to a link that says nothing about APTEE. It turns out you can find APTEE in a download called Adobe Application Manager Enterprise (AAME), which doesn't say much about APTEE, but does install APTEE in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\OOBE\PDApp\Enterprise\utilities\APTEE\CS6". You don't actually need to create a distribution package of the product installer with the UI of the installed AAME software as you might be led to believe; in the folder above is a command line tool, for which the "indesign-server-cs6-release-notes.pdf" file provides incorrect command line information regarding how to activate the 90 day trial (spurious spaces at line breaks and in command line options that are supposed to be "--" not "- -"). The actual correct command line I used successfully to activate the trial was "adobe_prtk --tool=StartTrial --leid=InDesignServer-CS6-Win-GM" .
It really shouldn't have taken that much figuring out (especially since the InDesign Server CS6 installer itself has a UI which suggests you can just choose an option for trial mode). You can only get on the right track by reading and then ignoring the instructions, and searching around for the right download on the Adobe site.

  • InDesign Server CC Mac problem licensing

    Hi all.
I'm trying to activate InDesign Server CC but I am having a lot of problems.
    - MacOSX 1.8.5 Server.
    - Adobeindesignserver 9.2 Debug 1_23
First of all, the package contains just a folder, not an installer.
So I suppose all I have to do is copy the content in the Applications folder.
In the folder I found tree different executable files:
    InDesignServer.app
    InDesignServer.command
    indesignserverconsole.command
I tried to activate InDesign with all the methods listed here:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/it/indesign/release-note/indesign-server-cc-release-notes.html#Requ isiti%20minimi%20di%20sistema
    adobe_prtk --tool=StartTrial --leid=InDesignServer-CS7-Mac-GM
    adobe_prtk --tool=Serialize --leid=InDesignServer-CS7-Mac-GM --serial=<MySerial> --adobeid=<MyID>
    adobe_prtk --tool=Type1Exception --accept --serial=<MySerial>--responsecode=<MyResponseCode> --leid=InDesignServer-CS7-Mac-GM
All attempts ended with: Return Code = 0 but InDesign still do not start.
The error is always the same:
"Adobe InDesign Server is not properly licensed and will now quit"
On this server is installed also IDServer CS5, can it be a problem?
I hope someone can halp me.
    thanks Ivan.

    Hi Karoly
    So far no answer.
The only way I found is to download a new installer from the official site and install it in a brand new system.
In a clean system and with a true installer, not just a folder all works fine.
Unfortunately it's just a workaround, not a real solution.

  • Adobe Indesign Server is not properly licensed.

I am having trouble activating Indesign CC server 2014,StartTrial Successful Return code = 0, however i get this: ERROR [server] Adobe Indesign Server is not properly licensed and will now quit. How do i resolve this issue?

I'm afraid I know nothing about setting up or running Server (and there are not a lot of users on this particular forum who will). I suspect you'll have better luck asking in the scripting forum: InDesign Scripting

  • Issue in setting Load balancing for Indesign Server CS5.5

    Hi All,
I need to set up load balancing mechanism for Indesign Server CS5.5 on Windows Server 2008 R2(64 bit version).
I have dutifully following all steps defined in "WORKING WITH LOAD BALANCING AND QUEUEING FOR ADOBE INDESIGN CS5 SERVER.pdf"
After running Indesign server using batch file "startup-indesign-server-CORBA-4instances.bat" from "<ID_SDK>\samples\load-balancing-and-queuing-clients\indesignserver-startup-scripts", I get only one instance of Indesign Server running. How to run multiple instances of the INDD server ? Is running multiple instance has something to do with type of licensing ?
Now I run Clover.cmd script, I get this screen. I have no idea why its not working. Please help. Please let me know, if the scenario is not clear and more information is required.

  • Problem with InDesign Server CS5

    Hi all,
when i run from prompt (of Windows Server 2008) the command "InDesign Server.com -port 18383" the system respond "Adobe InDesign Server is not properly licensed and will now quit", until some days ago the InDesign Server work perfecly. What i do for that issue ? I try to run cthe command "InDesignServer.com -serilanumber xxxxxx" and the command "InDesignServer.exe -serilanumber xxxxxxx" but doesn't work (the system says me the same think "Adobe InDesign Server is not properly licensed etc etc"). What can i do ?
    Thank you in advance

If you are using CS6, you need to link the installation to an Adobe ID. The simplest way to do that is input the Adobe ID while you install, but you can use the tools (I forget off hand what they are called) to do that afterwards.

  • InDesign Server as a reporting service

Hi, Im looking for help/guidelines regarding InDesign. I'm a software architect working on a line-of-business application that will eventually require printing about 5 hundred thousand personalized report (of about 20 pages each) over a couple of days (and many other smaller jobs), and my client requires that this job be executed by a third party. Think of the document as a fairly standard financial report printed once a year for each participant. The application is built in .net, backed by a sql database. Once a year, the data is mined, computed, and outputed in a format acceptable by the supplier (who is chosen through a public tendering process).
So from what I've learned thus far, to be complient with most suppliers, I must use some file format like postscript or eps, and to do this, it looks like InDesign Server might be what I'm looking for.
So here is what I've figured out so far (and where I will need your help if I'm not making sense) :
    - Create a kind of IDML template using InDesign on a desktop computer
    - in our .net application, modify the IDML for each participant to personalize it (a lot of conditional code to remove sections of text, and inject numbers, etc).
    - Send each (or a batch is feasable) to the InDesign Server to prepare for publishing into postscript/eps files
    - and if feasable, also create a PDF of each because we need to keep a digital version of the document on the client's corporate SharePoint (for legal reasons).
Is this how InDesign should be used? Am I making any sense?
Thanks in advance for all the answers.

    Hi, JP43.
For what it's worth, your question is on the boundary between the scripting forum and the general forum.
So from what I've learned thus far, to be complient with most suppliers, I must use some file format like postscript or eps,
This seems a bit peculiar. The obvious format for your document output would be PDF. PostScript and EPS seem weird choices, though certainly conceivable (well, I don't think you can have multi-page EPS files, but you can certainly have 20 EPS files and you can have multi-page PostScript files, but they tend to be output-device specific, though they need not really be).
What is your supplier doing with the file? Are they a printer? A specialty industry auditor? Or something else? If they're a printer, they should be asking for a PDF, I think.
Though it's also possible what they want is a less final output format that humans can deal with in other applications, such as Microsoft Word. A lot depends on the workflow. Anyhow, back to the main question:
and to do this, it looks like InDesign Server might be what I'm looking for.
Note that it's not a requirement that you use InDesign Server, and at $22,000/license, depending on your volumes, it may make sense to just use InDesign Desktop. The standard InDesign EULA doesn't let you drive its automation remotely, but if you have a human being walk up to a computer and start a script that reads 500,000 input files and produces 500,000 output files, I think that is in compliance.
    Replacing your bullets with numbers:
    1. Create a kind of IDML template using InDesign on a desktop computer2. in our .net application, modify the IDML for each participant to personalize it (a lot of conditional code to remove sections of text, and inject numbers, etc).
    3. Send each (or a batch is feasable) to the InDesign Server to prepare for publishing into postscript/eps files
    4. and if feasable, also create a PDF of each because we need to keep a digital version of the document on the client's corporate SharePoint (for legal reasons).
#2 is definitely one way to do it. If you are comfortable manipulating the IDML XML in .NET, and it's not important for you to leverage InDesign's object model in your conditions (e.g., you do not need to know how many pages InDesign would set a particular table at, and that does not effect your decisions of what objects to place where), then this is fine.
If your batch data is fairly simple substitutions, you could use InDesign's Data Merge feature. But that's really just a mail merging feature and it sounds like you have large tables of data and it is probably not sufficient.
The way I would probably implement it is to write code for InDesign's scripting that starts with a template (INDD or IDML or whatever), and then instructions InDesign to place various items in various places, replace/remove conditional items, etc. This allows you to leverage InDesign's knowledge of how the page is laid out and to make layout-continent adjustments in your script. If you tried to do this in IDML, you would have to replicate InDesign's layout engine in your software which is essentially infeasable and at which point you might as well throw InDesign out the window and just use something like iText to produce a PDF directly.
That said, #'s 1,3 and 4 are all trivial.

  • Indesign server web service - where is the support to upload a file with the script and download the result?

    Hi,
I am working on a POC that is supposed to convert indd files to pdf (i.e. using of course the indesign server). Basically I want to call the IDS Web Service (located on a different machine perhaps), pass in the input file, the conversion script and retrieve the result as part of the WebService call?
Browsing the documentation, examples, etc in the SDK, I couldn't see how the above can be achieved without the client handling the file transfer. Surely I must be missing something ...
    thanks
    Chris

What do you mean with POC?
InDesign Server is too precious (i.e. license cost) to waste its time with file transfers.
For a smaller scale, let a separate process (some http or smb server) on the same server hardware handle the files - so that the InDesign Server can access them on the fastest local volume.
If you plan for bigger, use a dedicated server for file sharing (your choice of SMB, NFS or whatever), where the input files are prepared by the client process, so that your load balancer can immediately point the next free instance of the InDesign server farm to the file. In that case be prepared for some try and error - high speed file sharing can be tricky with files written from one side not yet visible or incomplete to the other side, locking problems, Unicode file name trouble, unexpected time stamps and so forth.
Btw, there is also an InDesign Server forum which would be more appropriate for such discussions.

  • [JS][CS5] InDesign Server

    Hi.
I am curious to find out the speed advantage of using an InDesign Server to process one of my scripts as opposed to running locally on my Mac.  I know there are licence restrictions to using a desktop version of ID for server purposes anyway. I also know the cost of setting one up is not trivial.
Does Adobe offer any sort of testing platform for users to upload scripts and configure for testing purposes? I know there is a hell of a lot more work to configure this, but was wondering if this facility existed.
    Just thought I'd ask.
    Thanks
    Roy

Yes. There are performance advantages to Server -- mostly because none of the UI related processing is necessary...
Don't expect the differences to be too drastic though. I have found that the 64 bit Windows build to be noticeably faster than my local machine...

  • Indesign Server CC Trial issues

    The installation instructions states
You need to download Adobe Provisioning Toolkit Enterprise Edition (APTEE) for using the InDesign Server trial
The download link only refers to CS6, CS5.5 & CS5 not CC
Since there is no Adobe Provisioning Toolkit Enterprise Edition for CC I decided just to install and run the trial.
However I got the Adobe InDesign Server is not properly licensed and will now quit message.
According to the CC Release notes it says:
InDesign CC Server needs to be activated before it can be used. If the computer is online, activation is done automatically when you install. You need to provide your Adobe ID, and serial number when prompted by the installer. Unless the software is activated, you'll see an error, "Adobe InDesign Server’ is not properly licensed and will now quit."
My computer was online yet the it seems it didn't perfom the automatic activation as it suggests. When I entered my AdobeID credentials I did not get any errors saying it could not connect online.
So I had to do something and decided to use the Adobe Provisioning Toolkit Enterprise Edition for CS6.
This allowed me to get pass the licensing issue.
The next problem was I was getting DDE Server Window:InDesignServer.exe System Error popup. Telling me The program can't start because svml_dispmd.dll is missing from your computer.

So after browsing the net to see where I can get this missing svml_dispmd.dll I found this post http://software.intel.com/en-us/forums/topic/285859
and decided to install what it suggested.
I still got the missing dll error so I copied it from C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Intel\Shared Libraries\redist\intel64\compiler into C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CC Server x64
Now it just sits there and hangs at the same spot

What the heck is going on here?
I have installed Indesign Server CC on another machine and although I did not get the missing dll problem it still however hangs at the same spot mentioned above.
Could someone from Adobe please help. The already I'm losing days with this trial and I will have little days left to test this product.

  • InDesign Server CC2014 Trial issue

    Hi,
I cannot start our InDesign Server CC 2014 (Windows Server 2008). I have installed the software and was logged with our Adobe ID and installation was successful without any error message. The installation manual states that “InDesign CC Server needs to be activated before it can be used. If the computer is online, activation is done automatically when you install.” However, I got an error message when I tried to launch InDesign Server: “Adobe InDesign Server is not properly licensed and will now quit”.
Since  I had previously installed InDesign Server CS6 on another machine, I tried to use the APTEE to start the trial. I used the CS6 one because I did not find any version for CC 2014, I finally got the message:

but when I tried to launch again InDesign Server, I always get the Adobe InDesign Server is not properly licensed and will now quit message.

  • Server License for Creative Suite

Does anyone know what a server license is for the Adobe Creative Suite. If a company gets it, can any number of staff be in the suite at one time? What are the drawbacks?

InDesign Server has nothing to do with the version of InDesign that the
average user knows. (Besides being more or less the same internally.)
InDesign Server is a headless version of InDesign -- useful only to
companies who need extensive (total) automation of InDesign. InDesign
Server is useless unless some kind of system is built around it, hence
most purchasers of ID Server, buy it from some kind of developer.
What Janet needs is a site license which is purchased on a per-seat basis.

  • Where is InDesign Server CS2 SDK?

    Hello,
I downloaded the InDesign Server CS2 software through the Adobe On-line Licensing website, but it doesn't include the SDK.
Adobe's website does offer the CS3 Server SDK, but the CS2 Server SDK is not listed for download. Is there another place where I can download it from?
I'm currently not a member of the Adobe Partner Program.
    Thanks.

There is no separate InDesign CS2 Server SDK. The InDesign CS2 SDK at http://www.adobe.com/devnet/indesign/sdk/ includes samples and documentation for InDesign Server. A separate Server SDK was added for CS3 because of the extra complexity of the Java/Corba features in CS3.

  • InDesign CS3 License Upgrade

    Hi,
My client is running the trial version of InDesign Server CS3 which has now expired.  Is there any way to install the now purchased full license without a re-install of InDesign Server?
    Alec.

In IDS CS4 reserialization can be done from the command line (InDesignServer -serialnumber number). Command line reserialization only works in CS4 though, not in CS3.
According to Adobe the only option  is to uninstall IDS CS3 & reinstall with the full license serial.
