InDesign style problems on TOC

I'm having problems with my paragraph styles.  I'm working on a large document with imported text.  About half way through, all of a sudden I couldn't get my styles to work correctly.  For example, I'd select body copy and instead it would format as a header.  I checked the styles and they were correct.  I read in a thread to try using alt+shift when selecting the style and that worked.  But now I'm trying to generate the TOC and I'm having the same problem.  Nothing works.  Plus the styling it is applying is inconsistent even with the same style selected.

I think that you should try to post some screenshots; what you're describing makes no sense. If all TOC entries
1) are marked with the same para style;
2) have no character styles applied; and,
3) have no overrides
then they should look identical to one another.
So, if you post a screenshot of your TOC with the Paragraph Style palette visible, and you can verify that your Character Styles palette is completely empty, then we might be able to diagnose your problem.
The techniques I use to make sure that my styles have no overrides:
a) I have "Clear Overrides" mapped to control-shift-numlock enter. So, I can select text and whack that key combo, and know that it is free of para style overrides.
b) Then I can put my insertion point at the beginning of the first text box, and use control-shift-downarrow to select whole paragraphs at a time. When I do so, I can watch the para styles palette to see if the "+" appears indicating that I still have an override in that paragraph.
c) I use styles in my TOC that have names that are similar to to the actual subheaders in the body text. So, "Semibold Subhead" gets added to the TOC, and is styled with "Semibold Subhead TOC" like so:

  • InDesign CS6 ePub. TOC is not linked

    Hello
    using InDesign CS6 8.0.2
created the TOC and inserted at the begin of the book
exporting as ePub 2.0.1 the inserted TOC is not linked to the page/chapter so I can't click on it to navigate the ebook.
    What can I check?

    Hi,
Table of Contents if placed in InDesign is treated like any other story and is exported just like another text frame. This behavior is improved in InDesign CC and the TOC links are now intact in exported EPUB. All that is required is to check the option "Make text anchor in source paragraph" in Table of Contents dialog (this option was added in CC version) while creating TOC.
If you are looking for creating navigational TOC (one which is not placed in ID and is available in EPUB) in InDesign CS6, it can be created by selecting the TOC style from the TOC style dropdown available in EPUB Export Options dialog.
Please let me know if there are queries. I would be glad to assist you!

  • The custom style mapping option text still maintains the word formatting or it shows a style override in the InDesign style - how do I correct this?

When I tell the custom style mapping option to format a Word style (from an rtf document) with the InDesign style, the text still maintains the word formatting or it shows a style override in the InDesign style. I have a large document that needs to import the styles correctly and I've followed the tutorials exactly however the placed text is still hanging onto the word RTF styles. I want the rtf text to convert to my InDesign styles completely without overrides.

I actually need the cell styles. That's what sets my font, spacing, and GREP styles.
I did find the solution today. In the table style or table setup, I needed to set the "Stroke Drawing Order" to "Column Strokes in Front". Even though it was previously set to "Best Joins" and I had no strokes for rows or for the table borders, it just wasn't giving priority to my dotted columns.
    Thanks for your response though!

  • Adobe InDesign Styles

Hi i have a question related to InDesign styles.
I have a document with 100 pages, every 10 pages the colour scheme changes, gradients, background element colours, box corners (rounded and straight), fonts etc and i was wondering would object styles work and save time or is it quicker having a separate document for each 10 pages and just delete and replace the colours in the swatch library with the next colour?
There will be an on going amount of pages as i am building up a template library and there will be more colours and combinations to be added so i want to set the document up right from the start to save time in the long run.
Any advice would be greatefully recieved.
    Thanks

This was discussed recently on the forum. Search Google for "InDesign styles used script" without quotes.

  • Style problem with my TOC

I sucessfully created my first InDesign table of contents. WooHooo!
There is something I haven't been able to figure out. I would like the page number to appear on the far right side of the page, as apposed to being place right next to the entry. Also, I would like to have a traditional dotted line between the entry and the page number.
So far I haven't been able to figure this out. Is someone willing to direct me in the right direction?

In the style you create for the TOC listings (you should create a special style) you can set a right-aligned tab, and define a leader (the dots) if you like. but I much prefer to use a Right Indent tab. The metacharacter for that is ^y rather than ^t in the field for Between Entry and Number. The advantage of the right indent tab is that it always aligns on furthest right edge in the frame (minus any right indent applied to the paragraph) and adjusts with the frame if you change the frame dimensions.
Leaders and right indent tabs are a bit of a kludge, though (you have to set some other tab beyond the edge of the frame and assign a leader to it), but there's actually a better way to make the dots, anyway. Create a character style whose only attibute is to turn on an underline. I like the japanese dots as the stroke style -- they're more elegant than a period as a leader. You can adjust the weight and offset from the basline to suit your taste. I often add a thin space on either side of the tab, too to set the leader away from the text slightly -- also more elegant. That would look like ^<^y^< in the field, but you can pick all the characters from the field dropdown so you don't need to memorize.
If you use this method you don't need to set a tab stop, but you do want a nested style in the paragrpah style definition:
None (or some other character style) up to 1 right indent tab,
Your new underline style through 1 right indent tab,
another style for the page number if you like, through anything that won't appear before the end, or nothing at all after the underline style.

  • TOC Styles problem

Could someone please help me out with this small but really irritating problem?
When making the table of contents it looks like this
    1:title
    A:subtitle
    B:...
    2:...
    C...
I would like to start in the second paragraph wit a subtitle A not C
It sometimes helps when using tab in front of the subtitle or choosing manually in the inspector to start at....
But the toc remains the same... abcd through all subparagraphs...
    Hope this is somewhat clear
Could anyone help me out please?
    Thx!

Did you really read carefully the pointed technote ?
It clearly explain that for customized formats like the requested one, you must export to rtf then edit the exported TOC by hand.
Then, at last, replace in the Pages document, the automated TOC by the edited rtf one.

  • Issue with right aligning of Character Styles in my TOC

    Hello all!
I'm working on my very first book project and I have been reading soooo many threads on here for the past hour, but i either just don't get it, or i didn't find what i needed still, so i already apologize in case this very question has been answered before ...
ok, so ... i am building my TOC and have set up the corresponding TOC styles to the paragraph styles used throughout the book.
what i want is for the page number to appear before the entry. so for the page number i have set up it's own TOC page number character style.
    NOW
the page number appears left aligned. I have checked the character styles palette and there i can't set a tab for the page number to appear right aligned ...
how do i get this page number to be right aligned? and THEN, how do i specify the distance between the page number and the entry? there is "tab character"mentioned on the TOC dialogue box to specify the distance between page number and entry, but then do i have to go in manually every time something changes? that can't be it? i have seen in the paragraphy styles palette there is a tab section ... tried to input the tabs so the number would appear right aligned and the distance to the entry, but nothing happened, then the number is stuck right on the entry once the TOC is generated ...
    does this make any sense?
will attach a screenshot to try to clarify the issue ...
hope you can help me out.
    thanks a lot in advance!
    cheers

Seriously, if we didn't enjoy this stuff we wouln't be here. It's not like we even get T-shirts. :-P
An awful lot of what I know and am able to pass on comes from having spent waaaaay to much time here reading about odd problems and trying to figure out ways to solve them. I'd never seen a requst like yours until the other day, but then up pops Joel with a similar story, and what do you know, this may not be such a strange thing to want at all. Hopefully your question, and the work we put into trying to find an answer, has not only helped you, but some other users who come along next week or next year.
Everybody starts someplace and at some point in time. There's no shame in being a beginner, and less in asking for help when you need it, especially after you put in the effort you did on your own to try to find a solution. It's also true that some folks are more design oriented and others more process oriented, and that's just the way it is. This forum has many, many, followers who are expert in different areas of InDesign (even the engineers who write the program are not experts in all the various parts) and are here to share what they know as volunteers. You are always welcome here, especially when the question is as intersting as this one.

  • Weird problem with ToC/Story Editor

    Hi all,
I write the documentation for a software package. Recently the package has had two new add-ons that require their own manuals, so I reused my original doc and cleared it out to use for the new packages. All good so far until I want to do the ToC. In the original docs, each bit is split into its own story editor, but with the new manuals everything is all in one story and I think that is causing problems with the ToC because sometimes I'll get sections with nothing in them while other Sections have too many subsections. I've been through and checked my styles, but the only way around it right now is to view the ToC in the Story Editor and drag/drop the subsections to the right places. Right now these new manuals are not even 30 pages each, with four or five sections but this is not a tenable situation. I use InDesign 5.5 under Windows. Anyone got any idea? Obviously more detail can be provided.
    Thanks in advance,
    B

It looks the same and all the text is still in one Story. Can I split stories?

  • Which paragraph style options break TOC generation?

    Hi,
I've had a problem with generating tables of contents in InDesign CS3 and which persists in InDesign CS4.
After much experimenting I've learned that there's something in the paragraph style settings for the headings I want to include in a TOC that prevent them being included. The generated TOC in CS4 is empty. In CS3 it contains two empty paragraphs.
When I try to create a TOC on the same text, but no style applied to the headings it works.
So can anyone advise if there's any paragraph style settings (e.g. to do with line and page breaking) that will prevent that paragraph appearing in a TOC?
    Any advice much appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Stu

    Hi,
Correction to my previous message: I was wrong about the TOC generation working for unformatted headings, it doesn't work then either.
Would some InDesign expert out there be willing to receive a cut-down version of this document to see if they can successfully create a TOC for it? That's probably the easiest way to learn what I'm doing wrong.
    Thanks,
    Stu

  • Style Mapping for TOC & Drop-down

I'm using RoboHelp 8 and MS Word 2007. I've modified the Style Mapping.dot Word template in the project folder (as opposed to the generic one in the RoboHelp installation folder). I've done the mapping in the Printed Document Appearance dialog box. The problem is that RoboHelp seems to totally ignore or override the styles in the template. I hope that someone can tell me what I'm doing wrong. Let me list some of the problems:
In the table of contents, the top-level entries are numbered. Within RoboHelp, the Heading 1 entries are not numbered, and the comparable style, TOC1, in the Word Template is not numbered. Yet in the output, the entries are numbered. I don't want them numbered.
The Word output for "dropspot" text is indented by 1/2", and the output for "droptext" is indented by 1". Both are encased in <p> tags in the RoboHelp source, and the style for div.droptext in the default.css does not contain a left-margin rule. In the Word template, the mapped paragraph style for the droptext does not contain an indent. Of course the style information for dropspot on both the RoboHelp and Word sides is a character format and can't contain any left-margin/indent information. Just for grins, I tried changing the color for dropspot and droptext in the style sheet; that change was produced in the output, but nothing that I have been able to do eliminates the indentation.
The Word output for the droptext is bolded. Again, it is not bolded in the RoboHelp source, defalut.css, nor in the Word template style mapped to it.
In the case of the TOC problem, RoboHelp seems to add the numbering to the TOC1 style even though it is not in Style Mapping.dot. Fixing is fairly simple by just altering the style in the output.
In the case of the dropspot/droptext entries, the problem is monumental. RoboHelp does not appear to add the indentation information to the Word style sheet. Instead, it appears ot modify every single instance inline. Beccause the Help system in question consists of a very large volume of drop-down entries and because it must exist in both online and printed versions, it virtually requires the maintenance of two entirely separate "documents." Since the source can change frequently and substantially, that becomes extraordinarily expensive in terms of resources. We really need to be able to generate useful printed documentation from the online source. Any suggestions.

I just created a new project and set it up to map to the Style Mapping template. That is obviously a new copy taken from the installation folder.
I opened the template in Word and used the Change Style pod (CTRL + SHIFT + ALT + S). There I removed numbering from the TOC style. When I generated a document, there was no numbering.
Dropspots can be part of a paragraph so there should be no indenting. In this sentence "part of a paragraph" could be a dropspot so indenting would be a nonsense.
Using the supplied template neither were indented.
That all suggests to me that a fresh look at your in project template needs another review.

  • Paragraph Style Problem

I have the weirdest problem that I cannot yet understand. I have a 76-page book that has at TOC plus 10 chapters. The book was created last year in ID CS3, and everything worked fine. I have updated it into CS4, and everything appeared to be working normally until I discovered this problem. My master chapter for synchronizing is Chapter 2 in the book panel. All fonts are loaded and present.
In the last chapter (Ch. 10), the paragraph styles don't work. They not only don't work, they change the text to something totally weird. For example, if I set a block of type in Times New Roman and pick, say, the #1 Head style, which is Hypatia Sans Pro Bold, it converts it to a completely different font or it chooses a font I'm not even using. If I set the type in another chapter and cut and paste it to Chapter 10, it pastes fine. If I try to restyle it, it goes weird on me.
I have looked extensively at the styles, and they are all correct and the same as all the other chapters. However, when I try to apply them, a different change results. I have checked the Basic Paragraph Style; however, none of my styles are based on that because I checked that also.
Keep in mind that the paragraph styles worked properly last year and are working properly in every other chapter. Synchronizing does not help.
This may be a bug of some sort or it may be something I've overlooked. But I haven't made any huge structural changes to the chapter other than to add a couple of pages. I've tried restarting the program and the computer. The only thing I have not tried is to completely remake the chapter, which, of course, I don't really want to do.
I'm just throwing this out there. I'm not sure there is an easy answer. Let me know what you think.

Try moving the pages to a new file. That's not going to be as effective, probably, as copying all the elements into a new file, but it's faster.
Also, make a new book with just the problem chapter and the source chapter and synch again, see if it works.

  • JS CS3 script form word styles to indesign styles

I have search over the forums and can find a script the can change WORD styles (with a diskette sign) to Indesign paragraph styles (without the sign). Can any one help me on this?
    Thanks.

Here I translated the script from Russian into English for you. BTW, it is based on a script written by Dave Saunders (thanks Dave for it) — I totally reworked it to my needs. You should replace paragraph style names, font names, find-search strings, etc. with your own stuff.

  • Problem with TOC

    I made 2 styles
    titles of lessons
    titles of sections.
I created a table of contents (TOC) using the styles, however half of the titles do not show.
I checked all titles styles to be sure they are using the appropriate ones and they are.
Here is the automatic table missing several titles. What is doing this. I had no problem in CS4 ever and since I have CS5 this problem has appears in several projects.
Here is the table the way it should look.

If it's a conversion issue, it usually works better to do the export from the original version, rather than to wait and try the export from CS5 after editing. I've gotten into the habit of exporting all complex files to .inx in the original, then opeing that to make changes in CS5. So far that's worked well, and seems to work for others who have reported issues when opening a legacy .indd file directly.
So, Do you still have CS4? If so, lets try something else. Open the .idml file you exported from CS5 in CS4, then export THAT to .inx, and finally, open teh .inx in CS5. If you haven't used any new unsuppoted features, this should work to give you a document with the same layout, but there may be some changes in text flow so check carefully for oversets and headings that might have moved. Try the TOC again...

  • Problem with TOC levels (Bug?)

    Hi!
Im using Layout -> Table of contents to generate the TOC for my magazine. My pages basically have two paragraph styles that will be used in the TOC window. They are Section and Tittle, and are defined as paragraph style and well syncronized with the other articles of the magazine, im using a book to organize the files.
In the Window of TOC a choose for the first style Section pragraph style and add to the include paragraph style, next it's added  tittle paragraph style  to the include paragraph style.
    Im getting
    Tittle1.......................3
    Section1
    Tittle2......................4
    Section2
    INSTEAD OF
    Section1
    Tittle1.......................3
    Section2
    Tittle2......................4
Section style box is in level 1 and Tittle style box is in level 2 in TOC window. It make senses to me, when im defining the paragraph styles for TOC, but is different from what i expected.
It's a Bug on the CS4 for Windows ? Anyone have a problem similiar ?
    Thanks

It was the relative position of the section to the tittle frame. Thank you very much!
The Section was in the right corner of the page and the tittle was centered in the midle of the page.
I have made that because the layout of my magazine has the sections on the upper right.
I will have to create a hidden layer in the upper left of the page to solve the problem.
Do you have another solution, or a more elegant solution to solve this situation in particular ?
    thank you very much!
    best regards

  • InDesign Fonts problem Bookmark Script

    Dear All,
We developed one script for creation of Bookmark in InDesign CS2. When we are runnign this script content formatting is getting anmoly changed, I analyzed InDesign file and came to know that due to a font called "Trade Gothic Bold No. 2" due to this font all formatting of the content is getting change.
But in script I am not doing anything with fonts, only we are untagging the content to take the reference for creation of bookmark. The script is working very fine for other files from last 6-7 months but only this file is having this kind of problem.
If any one know the reason please let me know, I know this might be not related to scripting forum but if we recieved any issue related to it. Please let me know the solutions also how to aviod these kind of problem.
    Regards,
    Rajeev

In all likelihood, you have based one or more of your paragraph styles on "[Basic Paragraph]". If the Basic Paragraph style differs from document to document, then when you paste text in it will change to match Basic Paragraph in this doc instead.
Edit the styles in both documents to be based on "No Style" instead.
