InDesign TOC but no hyperlinks

I'm going nuts. I can generate a TOC for a book and place it on a page, but it will not generate hyperlinks. Where should I start looking?

The hperlink will show when epxport to PDF and open on Acrobat.

  • HT4168 epub: I'd like to create chapters for the TOC but don't want the new chapter to begin on a new page. I'd like it to begin on the same page as the prior chapter. How can I do that?

How can I do this? I currently have my TOC chapters listed as Apples, Oranges, and so on.  But my text chapters begin something like this:
    1
    Apples
    2
    Oranges
I have "Apples" with header 1, "Oranges" with header 1, etc., so that very nicely in the TOC it is listing my topics as the chapters. However, within the body of the document, 1 appears on one page and "Apples" begins at the top of a new page, separated from "1"; 2 appears one one page and "Oranges" appears at the top of the next page (separated from the "2), and so on.
Because of the way the book is structured, I need to have the chapter numbers on a top line and the chapter topic beneath it. (The book is further subdivided, such as 1.3a, 1.3b, etc.)
What I would like is for the TOC to indicate my chapters as Apples, Oranges, etc., but for the chapter text to begin as indicated above.
How can I do this?  Thanks.

Peter, I styled the wording of the chapter title (e.g. apples) with my heading1 styling and my sub-chapter titles were heading2. The text is a different font, different color, different size, different everything.  It seems that the epub program has an automatic format to start a new page with each new header. That's what I'm trying to work around. (Originally I styled both the numeral and the chapter title as "heading 1" and it gave each a different page!)
I am in the process of removing all headers and styling everything manually (which is how it was originally) just to avoid this problem.
I'm having my e-book done through a publisher (this will be self-published), so I'll be giving them a .docx and they'll convert it to .html (filtered) then .epub. so I need something that creates my Table of Contents as I'd like it, without messing up the text of the book.
I can give them a list of what I want in the Table of Contents, and have them manually do it, but the TOC may or may not come out how I want it to come out. My preference is to have something automatic. I wanted the sub-units (heading 2) in the TOC but that will never work since I have over 200 of them and it's too much for them to do manually.  It's a very slow process.

  • Have updated InDesign CC, but now get an error message for Font Manager.InDesignPlugin

I have updated recently updated InDesign CC, but now I get this error when I try to open a document that was working fine yesterday:
Cannot load Adobe InDesign CC because it requires version 9.1 or later of the Font Manager.InDesignPlugin plug-in. Please contact vendor for compatible version of Font Manager.InDesignPlugin.
Where can I find this plugin (for Mac)?

Thanks Peter, just saw your reply now, but that night I did uninstall and reinstall ID; in the morning did the ole shutdown - rest - command+option+p+r on start up as an added precaution and then it worked fine for the rest of the week.
Also, I got a new computer last week. The changeover to the new mac seeeeeemed to be fine...
However, I think Adobe suffers from Monday-itis as today I can't open any programmes as I get the attached message box when I try to  sign in to Creative Cloud. Will make this it's own post too.

  • I have CC Indesign CS6, but client has CS3 and wants CS3 files.

I have CC Indesign CS6, but client has CS3 and wants CS3 files. Can I access earlier versions through CC to do the 'downsave' thing? Any workarounds?

    You're a bit of a bind.
To save backwards you need to File>Export and choose IDML
But you will need to find someone with InDesign CS4 or CS5 as that is the versions that will allow to File>Export and choose INX.
INX is the only version that can be opened in CS3.
To be clear - the client should really update to the same version as you - as with each version the text engines are different, so there will be different line endings and perhaps even overset text depending on the layouts etc.
Plus any new feature in CS6 that was not in Cs5.5 or earlier versions will be stripped out - and going back to CS3 there are a few things which could alter the layout significantly.
I suggest the client upgrade to the latest version. Or if you can find a CS3 version online to purchase for yourself - either way - you should both work on the same version of the software.

Without system info and other details nobody can tell you much. This simply means that you run out of (temporary) disk space, maybe because the drive is really full, maybe because you have insufficient user privileges...

  • When a paste copied text into InDesign Illustrator but without the trace?

When a paste copied text into InDesign Illustrator but without the trace?
It seems incredible to do a composition in Illustrator and copy-paste to make InDesign and draw all the text.
I'm using CS4 but I see in the help that CS5 is the same.
    Thanks in advance.

Yes, I know that I can copy the text with the text tool. Although I would like to copy / paste from Illustrator to InDesign for editing if you need without having to play through two programs.
    Thanks for everything!

  • Hyperlinks in InDesign Okay But Not in PDF is this an Acrobat Issue?

    Hi,
I'm working on my first project in InDesign....interactive PDFs/ebooks.  I've entered my links in the ID file (CS6) in two different ways...the first with the "htpp://" prefix and the second with just the address and ".com". (no www.).  I've noticed that my version of PDF works when I export as print, and specify hyperlinks.  My coworker, working with the same file, will not generate some of the hyperlinks, and I'm guessing they are the ones WITHOUT the http prefix. (The link that appears instead is "resource://pdf.js/web").  My general question...have you run across this? Is this an Adobe Acrobat Pro issue (I have version 10)?  The links are correct in the ID file.
I can generate these PDFs, so I'll be able to finish my project on time, but thought I would throw it out to the community in case anyone  has run across this.
    Thanks!

Did you explicitly define the in the Hyperlink panel? Or only in text?
Set up them correctly in the Hyperlink panel.
Acrobat is reading out Hyperlinks depending on version and settings, but only when you set it up in InDesign’s Hyperlink panel you will get correct results.

  • How do I create a pdf in Indesign with 40 file hyperlinks so it can be used on different computers?

I am creating a document in Indesign CS4 that is to be exported as a pdf.
Within this one page document, there are approximately 40 listed products, one after the other and each product has been set up to hyperlink to a specific pdf in the same directory.
    This has been no problem.
Where the problem is, is that it won't work on other computers because it seems to 'hardwire' the hyperlink file address.
I then went in and set up the hyperlink as a URL.  This worked on any computer, but then the pdf opens in an internet browser.
I NEED THE LINKED PDF TO OPEN IN ADOBE READER.
I then opened the one page pdf in Adobe Acrobat Pro.  It brought over no hyperlinks.  So I created the hyperlinks there.  No probs.  It worked.  But if I want to update this one page doc in the future, I'm going to have to create all links again.  I have other docs that I need to create that have hundreds of links.
Can anyone shed some light on this?  It shouldn't be difficult.  Why won't a linked file just work on any computer?
Your help will be greatly appreciate.
    Josh

    Josh,
Got your email with added question related to this user to user forum post. As others might have the same question, answering it here.
If you want to point to PDFs that are in a subfolder of the root-directory that holds the pdf containing all the links, you'd need to add the subfolder to the path-specification for the link..
    For example:
root-folder has 'source.pdf' that has a link going to 'desitnation.pdf'
    a 'subfolder' contains 'desitnation.pdf'
    Link path would be '/subfolder/destination.pdf'
    Cheers,

  • InDesign TOC order using multiple stories

    Hello all,
I'm having some trouble with the TOC mechanism in InDesign. Assuming a story flowing from page 1 to page 100 in 100 textframes (one textframe per page). The TOC preset is configured well, TOC creation works fine.
When creating an additional textframe (new story, not linked, containing an automated general index) on page 50 e.g., styling its content with a TOC relevant paragraph style and updating TOC, for some poor reasons the new frames entry appears at the end of the TOC (with correct numbering).
I'm aware of InDesigns logic starting at the upper left corner and working down before moving right to read out paragraph positions, which in my opinion shouldn't be the problem/solution in that particular case. The problem seems to be that InDesign is not able to bring different stories entries in correct order. Can anyone confirm that behavior?
    Thank you very much!
    Jan

    Hello Peter,
that you very much for analysis and patience!
Unfortunately I'm not allowed to present the original layout here, but I built a sample file instead.
You already mentioned the fact, that the second story paragraphs are listed ahead of the threaded story. I really wonder why InDesign is not able to merge different stories in TOC. Maybe we just have to accept that. I thought about building a solution by scripting, but would prefer a way without it, because the InDesign document will surely get hold of people, who are not familiar with scripting or simply not aware of the (potential …) bug. However thats my problem and I'm just lucky that it does not seem to be my fault.
    Some additional info:
The sample file has 6 pages.
    Example 1:
Page 1: contains TOC (separate story)
Page 2-6: threaded story; first paragraph starting on page 3 because it is forced to start at an odd page
Page 3: contains 2 stories/frames; the threaded one and an index story (screenshot no. 1).
Page 5: contains 2 stories/frames; the threaded one and a second index story (just for testing purposes)
When generating TOC both index headlines appear below the ones from the threaded story (screenshot no. 2).
    Screenshot no. 1
    Screenshot no. 2
    Example 2:
Page 1: contains TOC (separate story)
Page 2: begin of threaded story
Page 3: contains only index story (screenshot no. 3)
Page 4-6: continuation of threaded story
Page 5: contains 2 stories/frames; the threaded one and a second index story (just for testing purposes); first paragraph starting here because it is forced to start at an odd page
When generating TOC first index headline appears above the ones from the threaded story, second index headline appears below the ones from the threaded story (screenshot no. 4).
    Screenshot no. 3
    Screenshot no. 4
In both examples the page sequence is correct, it is just separated by story.
Given two text frames on the same page the mechanism works like that in my opinion:
    Situation 1:
Frame 1: second oder further frame of a story (contains text)
Frame 2: first frame of a story (contains text)
RESULT in TOC: story of frame 1 is listed first
    Situation 2:
Frame 1: second (oder further) frame of a story (NO CONTENT in any frame till this page, because of setting paragraph start to odd/even pages e.g.)
Frame 2: first frame of a story (contains text)
RESULT in TOC: story of frame 2 is listed first (story 1 begins on an earlier page, but first paragraph of each story matters)
    Situation 3:
Frame 1: first frame of a story (contains text)
Frame 2: first frame of a story (contains text)
    Both frames with different x-position
RESULT in TOC: story of the more left standing (lower x-position) frame is listed first (= x-position matters)
    Situation 4:
Frame 1: first frame of a story (contains text)
Frame 2: first frame of a story (contains text)
Both frames with identical x-position, but different y-position
RESULT in TOC: story of the frame on top of the page is listed first (= y-position matters)
    So far, many thanks!
    BR

  • InDesign Server crashing on hyperlinks - HYPERLINKS.RPLN

When trying to access properties of a hyperlink it causes InDesign to crash. I can assign properties of the hyperlink but if I try and retrieve properties it hangs and crashes resulting in the error below. I'm using InDesign Server 64bit version 7.0.4.553. What's interesting is this works completely fine when testing using InDesign CS5 client version.
I have used Extend script toolkit to try and debug the issue but you can't even use the databrowser to look at the hyperlink properties as it'll crash there as well. But if I debug using toolkit with client version of InDesign it works fine. It really seems like an issue with InDesign Server and I'm not sure what I can do to work around/fix this problem.
    Example script -
    var myDoc = app.open([document path]);
    for (i = 0; i < myDoc.hyperlinks.length; i++)
         var myHyperlink = myDoc.hyperlinks[i];
var newDestination = myHyperlink.destination; // - this causes indesign to crash
         //Do some processing...

Any help would be great! I can post more information if needed.

I think I may have found the problem...
It appears that the particular document I'm working with has a shared link that is contained in another document (in InDesign if you look at the hyperlink details it is a shared destination and for "document" it specifies a different document then the current one. This would probably happen when the hyperlink is copied from a different document. When trying to access that shared link it is unable to get the properties of it because there is actually no reference to it as the other document isn't open on the server.
This is an interesting problem because I'm not sure where to go with this... I need to be able to get the hyperlink but with the given scenario I can't figure out a way to do that.

  • Indesign cs2 - imported word hyperlinks invisible

when i import a word doc the hyper links are invisiblr and have a box around them. i have tried changing the properties with no luck. the only solution i have found was to delte hyper links in word, import and create new links in indesign. takes way to much time, can anyone help.

Hyperlinks invisible and they have a box around them? What's that then, an invisible box?
A "Hyperlink" does not have to be visible. Any word you see, any image, indeed, any box (invisible or not) can be a hyperlink. InDesign is aware of this, and so it defaults to showing a box around text hyperlinks -- but if you don't like that, all you have to do is select the hyperlink and change its properties in the Hyperlinks panel. However, these are the properties of the hyperlink -- not that of the clickable text that's linked. InDesign does not "do" anything to this text, you will have to "make it visible" yourself.
If you want to make links "visible" by making them blue and underlined, you will have to select each one of them and make the text blue & underlined.
But -- if you imported the text out of Word, you usually get a character style applied to all hyperlinks (as this is something that Word does do, whether you like it or not). So changing the character style will change the appearance of all text that have this character style applied to them.

  • How does InDesign decide what to hyperlink?

I am using CS5 and noticed that InDesign will automatically create a hyperlink for URL's and email addresses that I type text for. I did notice that if the URL does not have "www." it does not automatically create a hyperlink. If the "www." is all uppercase it also does not automatically create the hyperlink. Is there a setting anywhere to change that behavior? In 2011 including the "www" part really isn't needed.

I'm not 100% sure how Acrobat works with automatically creating hyperlinks but I will tell you this...if you need hyperlinks then you need to create them in InDesign before exporting to make sure they work. While Acrobat's default is to automatically read hyperlinks this feature can be turned off and, as you have discovered, is not exactly perfect.
For more on this you might want to pop over to the Acrobat forum and ask the gurus there.
