Indesign trouble on a PC

I cannot select certain tools and palettes in InDesign. I have a PC and Windows 7. Is the software not compatible with my operating system? Any fixes?

Indesign trouble printing a gradient shadow

Hello,
I'm fairly new to production in Indesign and I've been having a lot more trouble than I thought I would trying to get this particular graphic to print properly - I know it must be something really simple that I'm not doing.
So the attachment "testimage" is the original artwork in Illustrator - how it is supposed to look. I then put this file into Indesign and exported as a PDF and I got the attachment "tester" - everything looks fine, but no shadow. The shadow prints white. I have tried to do things like overprint, but that does not work, as well as distorts the appearance of the colors in the rest of the file. I have also tried to remake the graphic in various ways, such as use a drop shadow in Indesign instead of using the blur from Illustrator.
Perhaps could any of you please tell me what I am doing wrong? Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!

In Acrobat 9 on Windows XP I see a shadow in both PDF files, but it is lower resolution in tester.pdf and looks like it has been heavily jpeg compressed.

InDesign Trouble: CS4 not opening CS3 file formats

Hi..
For some reason, when I try to open a CS3 indesign file format in CS4, it freezes. I tried multiple files and it does the same thing... Any suggestions out there?

Check your account --> My Products or My Subscriptions and Services. If it's a standalone product, all you need is input the serial in the installer (including teh trial), if it's a subscription/ Creative Cloud you download the application manager and let it handle things based on your Adobe ID.

Indesign Trouble

Hi everyone,
I am network admin at a hight school in concord, ca. I use OS X server 10.5.4 to manage 3 Mac labs on our campus. I make system images with System Image Utility built onto the server ti distribute consistant images to all my macs. I have been doing this very successfully until I upgraded to leopard and CS3.
The errors I get when making the image are :

Leopard pretty much sucks as you have found out. CS3 is rock solid with Tiger. maybe its time to backgrade

Print Booklet Missing Pages

Hey all! Some InDesign troubles here. I'm using CS5.
I have a business plan all ready to roll in InDesign; 40 pages, master pages, the works. I go to 'print booklet' so I can whisk it off to Staples to be printed coheriently, go through the dialogue boxes and everything looks good. I can see the 20 spreads, and I save it as the post script file.
Onto Acrobat Pro! I open the ps file in Pro, and it automatically converts it to a PDF as it should. But, there are only 20 pages, not 20 spreads. Half of my document is missing. Maybe I overlooked something when I was saving the ps booklet, or maybe I'm missing some display setting in Pro, but I can't figure it out!

My town (and any near) is smaller than any small printer you might be thinking of; it's a pretty rural area, and Staples makes for the best printing solution.
Not sure how to set the paper size in the postscript file; everything is greyed out. I have the document set up to be printed on reagular 8.5x11 pages (the InDesign document is set at that size), but still the postscript file spits out only half of whole 40-page doc. I turned off bleeds (not using them anyway) in hopes that that would fix it, but nothing changed.

What operating system? What version of InDesign? What happens when you insert a page (and how are you choosing to insert a page)? Does it happen with just one file, or does also happen on a clean new file?

Trouble With Opening InDesign and now Photoshop and Illustrator

First off I apologize if this isn't in the correct section. I couldn't find a section specific to my problem since it involves multiple aspects of Adobe products. I was having trouble with InDesign, it kept crashing. So I followed all of the advice I could find on the forums about deleting the preferences and cache information in the Library folder, and that didn't seem to make a difference. So then I thought maybe it needed an update, so I logged into Adobe Application Manager and sure enough, it did. So I clicked on "download" and it stalled there too. Then the manager became unresponsive. I couldn't cancel the update or log out or anything. So then I saw in the forum someone suggested the Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool if your manager becomes unresponsive. I ran that and then shut my computer off. When I turned it back on, InDesign started working BUT my Photoshop is completely gone from my system (I never messed with it in the first place since I wasn't having any trouble with it.) And the when I tried to click on Illustrator it said "Do you want to begin your trial?" Huh?
I have had a subscription since 2012, why on earth would it suddenly think that I no longer should have access to these programs? If I log on to my Adobe account it shows my subscription and that it's up to date (last payment was April 5, 2015). The versions I was using were the CS versions that I had downloaded directly from Adobe and when I used to have any trouble or when I got a different computer I could just log into my account and then redownload them. They are no longer showing under my products, so I can't figure out what on earth is going on. The website has changed since the last time I downloaded them, so that partly could be me, but I thought they would at least be showing up under products. I contacted Adobe support and the first person I talked to on chat said "this is clearly a technical issue I am transferring you to someone better suited for this," but that's all he said. And I haven't heard from anyone since so I thought I'd make a topic and see if anyone else out there has had a similar problem.

The versions I am using are the CS6 versions.*

Trouble Sampling Colors with Eyedropper Tool: InDesign CS5

Hey everyone,
My name is Quin, and I've used InDesign CS5 for the past few years and am working on a magazine layout for the first time. I'm suddenly having a really difficult time getting the eye-dropper tool to extract color samples from images i've placed in my layout. These are either jpeg or PDF images. If I recall correctly, in my past use of the program, i could simply click the eyedropper tool in an image and get my color sample – but suddenly, i'm having trouble getting it to sample color/make a color swatch.
I tried double clicking the tool and excluding everything i wouldn't want it to sample. Tried locking/unlocking layers, tried making sure the image frame itself is selected, tried holding down option, tried trashing the preferences (using a 2012 MacBook Air with the latest version of OS X Mountain Lion)… most of the time when i attempt to sample a color, nothing shows up in the fill box, except the classic diaognal red line over white.
The exception is when i use the eyedropper to sample non-image base things i've already filled, like a retangle, it picks up the color fine. So it's likely image specific. Is there something really obvious that i'm missing? It's frustrating because i simply want to sample colors to get a rough idea for text colors and headlines that can match images, and there doesn't seem to be a quick way to do this…

Quin, I just had a eureka moment! I was having the exact same problem, unable to sample color from images with the eyedropper tool, and when I sampled text to apply formatting, it strangely applied a black rule around the new text. The problem was intermittent, with the tool both working and not working within the same document. I finally realized the tool was misbehaving when sampling an item on the document, but worked fine when sampling images or text on the pasteboard.
So, the document I'm working on is an ad with a 1pt rule around the border. I have the border on it's own layer at the top level, and locked, so I can select items on the ad without the border getting in the way. What I found is, even though it's locked, the eyedropper tool is sampling the border from that layer!
I tried turning off stroke settings in the eyedropper options just gave my text a fill of 'none.' Turning off both stroke and fill settings had no effect on the new text at all. I tried unlocking the layer and just locking the border on it's own, but it still picked up the formatting from the border.
The only thing that worked is to hide the layer! Turn off the layer 'eyeball' and see if that works for you.

Trouble with booklet printing -- InDesign CC 2014

I'm having trouble printing booklet with new CC 2014. I print to postscript, but then PDF is not correct. I see it's using Acrobat 8 driver; how do I change that to Acrobat XI?

Peter, I was/am having trouble explaining my trouble, so I am going to tell you what happened to me yesterday... This booklet printing issue started with me uninstalling my old Acrobat 8.... since I run XI Pro -- because it caught my eye, too, that now I, like many other CC users, have three (3) sets of software on my computer. So I got Acrobat 8 uninstalled, but then had to go back to work, and postposed dealing with the other CC program uninstalls. Yes, I am using CC to run my business.... lost 6 hours yesterday trying to cope with computer issues. So, I'm heading into InDesign to print a production file for a 24-page booklet for a client on a deadline, only to find out the ID CC 2014 is still looking for Acrobat 8, or my Epson printer. The only other option in the postscript print menu at that point is "device independent", which does not allow for page setup, hence the pdf (saved from the postscript file) comes out completely wrong. (showing a standard portrait letter page setup for a now landscape ledger size document)
It took me 3 hours of search to find a post from 2012(!) that lead me to believe that if I could install (manually!...never done it before) a pdf9 PPD into the new ID CC 2014 Present folder it might just work. In fact, I had to manually program a brand new version of a software, which I've never done before -- I am not even close to a software engineer.
I still don't understand why ID CC 2014 is not looking/routed to Acrobat Pro. But then the previous CC didn't either. It was running on Acrobat 8 PPD too.
I manually built a 24-page printable booklet yesterday. Lost 6 hours of billable time. (installed pdf9PPD at midnight last night... I'll stay in business.) I see dozens of extensions in Extension Manager for ID CC 2014. Have no idea which one I would need, if any, to fix this issue, or where to install them.

Not possible. You'll need to go to your operating system and choose a screen resolution that displays the screen with larger pixels.

Trouble ending a thread in InDesign CS6?

I am having trouble ending a thread in a long document with separate sections. Using InDesign CS6 on Mac running OSX 10.6.8. I checked Online Help and it says to double click either the In or Out box. This doesn't work, just loads the Select tool with text. I tried holding down Command, Option, and shift alternately and in combination while doing it, didn't alter the result. Any advice please?

No. You must click INSIDE the same FRAME (don't try to double-click or click in the outport again). This will break the link to the following frames and leave your last frame overset if there was text in those following frames.
If I just stop linking and start afresh on a new page, it shows up as an error on the Pre-flight panel.

If you want to break apart a story into several different stories you need to cut the overset text from the first story and paste it into a new frame (or the still linked-to-one-another frames that you unlinked from the story in the earlier step.
You can use the DivideStory.jsx script to automate the process:

I believe this was written by Dave Saunders. I have it in a "Version 4.0 Scripts" subfolder in my Scripts Panel folder because it is very old and may not run correctly without being in such a subfolder. The subfolder name is case-sensitive, but should not include the quotes.
