InDesign unpredictable spacing on top of text box.

Hello everyone. I have quite a frustrating problem that I'm assuming is an easy fix. InDesign is creating this empty space on top of my textbox depending where i place the box. In this case, I found the exact pixel position where when I move the box one px upward, it removes the space, but when I move it back down it adds the space. Any ideas what setting that might be and why is that useful? Right now it's only frustrating.
Note: This text is linked to another text box and nothing seems to change on the preceding text when this one has that space created.

Thank you very much. I didn't even know how to look up the solution.
Now I understand what those buttons do and their usefulness.

  • Top of text box moves up when typing new text exceeds box width.

Using iWork 09 I set a text box on a master and mark it as Format/Advanced/Define as text placeholder. In the Text Inspector, I set parameters as left justified, align text to bottom, line spacing = 1, and other numerical parameters to 0. Then, on a new slide using this master, the top of the text box moves up to accommodate additional text and it would be seem more natural for the bottom of the box to extend DOWN instead.  What am I missig here?

it would be seem more natural for the bottom of the box to extend DOWN instead.  What am I missig here?
No it wouldnt. If you understand that, align to bottom, fixes the last character in the bottom line to the bottom right hand corner of the text box, the text then flows from that corner as you add extra text.
You cant have align to bottom and have the text flow from the top, you need to choose between the three options.
If you want to add extra lines without the box moving; use align to top.
If you want to align the text to the bottom of the box; use align to bottom.
I set parameters as left justified,
There is no such thing as left justified.   You need to choose between justified or left align, these are two different alignment methods, text is either left aligned, right aligned or justified, not a combination of them.

  • Image on top of text box issue

I'm attempting to create my own message window that will appear when a text box is full.  I have script in the "full" section of the text box that makes the presence of the image and a few text boxes visible when full.  In design view, I have placed the image on top of the text box.  However, during testing, when the text box is full, the image appears but the text from the text box below also appears on top of the image.  I have tried to setFocus to the image as well, but this didn't help.
What's odd is that if I navigate to a different page and then navigate back, the image appears correctly.
    Any ideas?  Thanks.

  • InDesign won't print colors in text boxes

I have been working on a newsletter that includes some charts and tables in it. I put the tables and charts in a text box, and then added a background fill color to it. I exported the document to PDF, and the colors showed up there fine.
The trouble occurs when I try to print the document. The fill color in the box does not show up at all. What can I do to fix that. Thanks for the help.

This sounds more like an issue with the printer driver and the PDF than an InDesign issue, but one way to test would be to try to print direct from ID. Do the colors print correctly then?
What do you see in Acrobat when you turn on Overprint Preview? Is the color still there?
Can you post this PDF on a server someplace so we can download and test it?

  • Indesign tables – alternating fills over multiple text boxes

Here is the issue – I have a document FULL of tables, for a schedule of meetings, with alternating fills of gray and white. Often, the table hits the end of a page/text box and runs over to the next. The header row repeats (contains the time for the meetings, so that's great), but the alternating fills do not reset (the screenshot shows what is happening now).
In other words, if the table splits on a gray cell, the top of the next page/text box has a white cell. I want every text box to begin with the header row and a gray fill. Right now I can only figure how to do it manually, splitting each table at the break point.
The reason this is key is that the schedule changes rapidly up until the print date, so often cells shift around, making a manual series of text boxes, to say the least, frustrating to work with.

Thank you Peter, I had the same suspicions. I guess I’ll have to modify this catalog one item at a time.

  • Adobe X Standard - Top Aligned Text Box

I am trying to create a form that allows the body of a letter to be placed within an Adobe Form. The body of the letter can cover upto about 70% of that page. Obviously I am trying to do this via a text box but how do I get the text to start at the top of the page. It seems to want to start half way down the page.
How do I set the alignment to the start at the top and work down???
    Thanks

Set the "multi-line" option of the text box.

  • InDesign CC crashes when creating a text box

My InDesign CC 2014 keeps crashing when I try and create a new text box and type in it. I don't understand why. Help please!

Could be. Try Remove minor corruption by exporting
Could also be a bad font, but that's less likely unless you are using fonts you don't normally use.

  • Line on top of text box

I got a nice photo book printed out but on top of any page with a long text box there is a horizontal line atop the heading for that text panel.... I thought it was just a visual anomoly in the app but it actually PRINTED that way and now I've got a book with weird elements all over the place (see attached).

Interesting. Indeed, it relies less heavily on internals, so should be more portable across versions.
The drawback is the "whole container painting" side, so one might need to crop the image to the wanted portion, which is a minor issue.
I hope JavaFX will offer some day a fromFXNode() function, to avoid any hack. And it was [proved it might accelerate a script|http://piliq.com/javafx/?p=1108] to use an image out of lot of nodes instead of trying to manipulate all the nodes, so it is useful beyond saving/transmitting the image.

  • Need a CS2 workaround - Add space for line at top of text box

I need a way to add space before a line of text (it's a subheading kind of thing) which is the fist line in the text box, since "space before" in paragraph styles doesn't work for this. I'm stuck using CS2 at work, but I made the layout on CS4 at home that uses a workaround involving 0pt rules offset and the Keep in Frame option. This feature is not in CS2 (ugh).
    Any help is appreciated.

A yucky way of pulling this off without CS3's (and later) "Keep Above Rule in Frame" could be to set the leading extra large. The default Baseline options for text frames is to ignore leading, but you can change it to use the leading. A drawback is that also impacts your regular text ...
How about an even yuckier trick?
    1. Make the font extra extra large. InDesign ignores super-extra-big leading by default, but it does honor text size. To be precise: the text size that's in the character panel size box (this is important!). If you make the font extra extra large, this is the size that's going to be used.
    2. Now you have large text ... so scale it back down using the Horizontal and Vertical scale in the Advanced Character Formats. If you made the text twice as large, use 50% / 50% to scale it back.
    3. Done.
I said it would be yuckie.

  • Re-linking multiple text boxes in InDesign

    So here's my problem....
I've laid out a magazine in InDesign. It has many features, complete with graphics, insets, etc. One of my contributing authors wants his story (as published) sent to him separately in order to have it translated into Japanese. It's six pages long. I've copied & pasted it into a new 6 page InDesign document. But now the text box links are broken. I want to re-link the text boxes (already filled with text) back together, but I can't seem to figure out how to do that. I really DON'T want to have to reflow all the text and graphics again. Isn't there a simple way to just re-link the text Boxes?

Instead of copy/pasting, you would have been better off going to
Layout>Pages>Move Pages and moved them to a new document. Then the text
    threads would have stayed intact.

  • Text box alignment problem

Every time I create a new text box in an exsiting file, the text in a text box moves. the text alighment button is pressed EG: align to top of text box, Middle or bottom. but everytime I move the text box, the text will then move with in it. I turned off all text wraps and ticked suppress any text wrap in hidden layers (even when this is not ticked) nothing changes, The text still moves around inside the box. I am quite sure that this is not suppose to happen, especially if I ticked for  it to be align in the centre of the text box.
    Can someone help me please.

Thank you so much. It's been bugging me for ages.

  • Duplicate text box filling

I am creating a proof in InDesign CS3.
I have a text box on page 1 I'm typing in the customers name.
How do I get another text box on a different page to auto fill the same customer name?

    Amazing!
Never even thought it could be that.
    Thanks so much.

  • Indesign CS3 : Inset spacing preview in text box not there anymore.

    Hi!
In Indesign CS2, I could see a "preview" of the inset spacing of my text boxes in "Preview Mode (W)".
In Indesign CS3, I can't see it anymore unless I move my text boxes (the preview of the inset spacing of my text boxes shows only when I move the boxes).
This is bad, because I can't see really fast which boxes have inset spacing and which ones don't.
    Please help me!
    Thanks,
    Chris.

    Yes.
Normal Mode hides all of those things. But Preview Mode shows all of those things (unless otherwise selected in the "View" menu).
I need to see the inset spacing of my text boxes in Preview Mode without having to move them.
Here is an image of my text box in Preview Mode (guides, invisible characters, etc. are visible, but not the inset spacing): http://www.chris.lafacade.com/share/01.jpg
Here is an image of my text box in Preview Mode while I move my box. As you can see, the inset spacing shows: http://www.chris.lafacade.com/share/02.jpg
I need the inset spacing to show all the time in Preview Mode.
    Thanks!
    Chris.

You probably hit the Numbered List on the control panel (top). Just deselect it and it should be fine.
