InDesign vs. Illustrator

My company has Illustrator but I got a request for InDesign.  From the product comparision, it seems like Illustrator does everything InDesign does.  Can Illustrator be used in lieu for InDesign?

I have done multi-page documents in AI, but it isn't something I would like to do on a consistent basis. But it all really depends on what you are producing.
Likewise, I've done some fairly complicated illustrations using only InDesign's native illustration tools - but I'd rather eat glass professionally than do so on a regular basis.
It would be used to make minor edits on existing Pharmaceutical Packaging Artwork that is a combination of Artwork and Text ...stuff that needs corrections, not starting from scratch.  Sounds like it would work...what do you think?
Sounds to me like it's already an InDesign document, right? In which case you can't edit it in Illustrator, only in InDesign.
If I as a client asked for work to be delivered in ID and got it back in Illustrator, I'd fire the supplier. In fact, I've done so. (Well, it's not really "firing" when you say "This contractor never gets work from us ever again, as this contractor cannot read the job spec.")

  • Adobe Creative Suite Design CS6 - PhotoShop, InDesign and Illustrator immediately shuts down after startup

I'm troubleshooting for a customer who have Adobe Creative Suite Design CS6.
His programs suddenly wont start, they launches and starts to read plug-ins and open up a workspace, but then without warning/error it shuts down. no log, error message or anything...
It's the same for PhotoShop, InDesign and Illustrator both in 32 bit and 64.
He is running the suit on a Hp EliteBook 8560p with Windows 7 Pro x64 sp1.
He also have had a Wacom Bamboo CTE 650 penpad installed before.
This is what I've done so far:
    * Uninstall the whole suit and reinstalled it again (Done this 3-4 times, manually deleted regestry-files, used CClean and other cleaning tools)
    * Deleted the wacom-drivers with controlpanel tool, Windows driver Clean tool, CClean and manually deleted registry-keys and files.
    * Uninstall Anti-Virus software and replaced it with another, inactivated AV and Windows Firewall.
    * Deleted register-files for the suits and "reregister" them again.
    * Full patch both for windows and adobe softwares.
    * Reboot between each step
    Any suggestions?
I have to add that adobe support for this $2000 software really sucks...
    Thanks!

    Problem solved!
I went through all the folders associated with adobe cs6 and renamed them (one by one) so they would be recreated.
I did this before but seems like I missed this specific one.
Anyway, when I renamed the folder "SLCache" in C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\ and then ran the applications one by one as administrator I was prompted to enter a serial-key again and log in to my Adobe-ID.

  • Smart Object as traditional link (as in InDesign or Illustrator)

Is there a way to link a smart object, so that updates are made to the originally placed object ....as opposed to creating a new vector file save in a temporaray folder.  Is there a way to work with smart object like traditional links in InDesign and Illustrator?
    Thanks

  • Color Separations in InDesign and Illustrator

I am trying to print spot color separations. In both InDesign and Illustrator the "separations" is gray. I can only print RGB and grayscale.
My colors are set up as spot. I even tried to print from Acrobat and "separations" is gray there also. Do I need to re-install my drivers or the programs.
I am trying to print to postscript printers but neither one lets me select separations.
    I am using CS3
    Microsoft Windows XP
    Professional
    Version 2002
    Service Pack 2
    Intel(R) Core (TM)2CPU
    6600 @ 2.40 GHz

Thanks in advance for your help.
    Cindy

I’m not familiar with those models. Are the PostSCript compatible? If so, then you should get the most recent drivers from the manufacturers’ websites. It’s been ages since I needed to worry about printer drivers in Windows, but maybe you need a PostScript printer utility or printer driver from Adobe, too.

  • CS3 - Copy and Paste from InDesign to Illustrator NOT working

I am trying to copy and paste some graphical elements from InDesign to Illustrator. The Paste command is active in Illustrator, but when I evoke the command, nothing is pasted. What is wrong?

Apparently it is an issue with Leopard (and Illustrator)
    Workarounds:
    1) Export from InDesign as eps or PDF, or
    2) Copy paste into Photoshop as a Smartobject, and then double click the layer to edit smart object (it will open in Illustrator)
    I know, it's a pain.

  • Colour Profiles missing in InDesign and Illustrator CS3

    Adobe CS3
    Mac 10.5.8
Hi, I recently brought a new HP Printer (HP Photosmart B110) and installed the software for for it and all the colour profiles for the papers were visible in the drop down box (they were HP Premium Photo, HP Advance and HP Premium Plus Photo) but after updating the drivers they all vanished (see image for InDesign and Illustrator examples).
I contacted HP and uninstalled all the HP software as well as deleting HP related files and then reinstalled the software again but the Colour Profiles were still not visible. I have contacted HP again and they have said that it's something to do with my Adobe software so I was wondering if anyone can help me with solving this problem?
    Thanks
    Chris

HP is fond of pointing the finger at Adobe, and in fairness their drivers often don't work well with InDesign (HP printers account for the largest number of printer related problems on the forum by far, and I don't think it's just due to market share), but installing color profiles has NOTHING to do with any Adobe software. If the profiles were being installed properly by the HP installer, they's be in the system someplace (probably the colorsynch folder) and they'd be available to other programs even if Adobe apps didn't find them.
If the HP low-level tech feeds you that "it's an Adobe problem" BS again, immediately ask to be escalated to someone who knows what they are talking about, and take names.

  • Copy and Paste gradients from Indesign to Illustrator???

    Hello,
for some reason when I copy and paste an object with a gradient from indesign to Illustrator, the object becomes colorless....What happened to the gradient? I can copy and paste a solid colored object from Indesign to illustrator (and for some reason then, when I copy and paste an object with a gradient from illustrator to Indesign, it acts like a "placed" image....what's that about????)
Can anyone tell me the best way to transfer a gradient swatch from Indesign to Illustrator, without having to regreate it? And why when I paste objects from Illustrator to Indesign, Indesig treats it as a "placed" image (meaning that once you double click on it, the hand pops up allowing you to move within the bounding box, like with an image)
    Thanks...
    Thank you very much

    Hi Jacob,
Thank you for a quick answer. Your suggestion is correct, but saving image to a file is an additional step.
Since I do this task "thousands a day", this is unacceptable
    Any other suggestion?

    Jarda

  • Best for making event flyers: InDesign or Illustrator?

Hi everyone, I am new here. I am a novice with Adobe products, but I do have the Creative Suite. I have used Illustrator tons and am very comfortable with it. I used InDesign once to make a pamphlet.
I am part of a charity group that often puts on events. I will be making all the flyers. Printing budget is low and will probably consist of going to Kinkos and printing on A4 paper. So these flyers are really not all that involved, but I want to make them the very best that they can be.
Now my question. Is it better to use InDesign or Illustrator to make the flyers?
And as a bonus, if you know of any sites that might give me inspiration to make flyers, I would appreciate it! I try to keep my eyes peeled and learn new things all the time. I want to give credibility to our group with the flyers, and I dont want them to look cheesy or home-made. Thanks for any tips you might have!

This exact question came up at work today. The person in question was
ordering ID, but it was on the only program available for content
creation for flyers, posters, and all artwork. I suggested that if only
one program for artwork, posters, and flyers, I'd go with Illy. However,
if I had my choice I'd go with the Design Standard package, since there
are uses for Illy, PS, and ID (and of course Acrobat). In the end we
will try to get the package, but the choice if ID or Illy depends upon
not only what you need to do, but what other tools are available to help
    you out.
I'd hate to do multi-page documents in Illy (or PS), but I'd also hate
making ID my sole artwork program as well.

  • When placing a Illustrator file in Indesign, the Illustrator file sometime changes from 100%.

When placing a Illustrator file in Indesign, the Illustrator file sometime changes from 100%. When you select the placed file with the selection tool, it says 100%, but if you select with the direction tool, file has been changed any where from 98 to 102 %, not staying at the 100%? why is this and how can you asure the size does not change when placed or when updating the illustrator link?

Probably you have inserted files in a frame whose content was previously adequate with "Fit Content Proportionally" or "Fill Frame Proportionally".
The new content in the same frame will have the same characteristics as the previous one

  • InDesign vs Illustrator for packaging layout

I will be working on a project that requires packaging graphics to be laid out on a corrugated box dieline. There are style guides about width of color bands and placement of copy from the edges of the folds, etc.
This would normally be done in Illustrator since it's easier to but due to an end-use issue, this has to be done in InDesign, not Illustrator.
Does anyone have experience with InDesign for this kind of stuff that may have workflow tips on how best to do the layouts except substituting InDesign for Illustrator?
    Thanks,
    JRH

    Bob,
Thanks for the reply. I've done that in the past, but when I get there tomorrow and see their workflow, I'll have a better grip on it.
I'm hoping to streamline the process, but I'm thinking that they need it assembled in InDesign since they have an end use using some Package Wizard program. Just trying to anticipate what I'll walk into.
    cheers

  • Only in a admin session works InDesign and Illustrator!

When I open some products (Indesgin for example) in a session without admin permission, it doesn't work. All is well y I open the software in a admin session but I don't like to use admin session normally, only for instalations.
It's not so safe to work continously in an admin session, and I don't want to do it.
    Could you help me?

Adobe InDesign downloaded from Adobe Creative Cloud, It´s supposed last
    version of CS6. S.O. Windows 7
When I try open in a non admin session Windows shows a message: Windows has
closed correctly this program by an error

  • Do I use InDesign or Illustrator?

I have only ever used Photoshop for pieces of artwork and I now need to create high-res in-store signage for digital print. I am not sure which programme would be better to use for this: InDesign or Illustrator? Most artwork will already exist, I may just need to change prices or add in text/banners where appropriate. Can someone suggest which would be the better programme for me to receive further training on?

For single page layouts like signage or posters that's a difficult call. Either program will work.
Illustrator has much more sophisticated drawing tools and soome 3-D capabilities that InDesign lacks, but ID has more sophisticated text handling and will do multiple pages more easily, if you think you might also need that capability. Persoanlly, I use ID for layout, assembling elements previously produced in Photoshop and Illustrator as appropriate, and doing the text elements in ID.

  • INDESIGN AND ILLUSTRATOR DVD

It is no longer possible to purchase indesign and illustrator?

Below is an image of what I see on the page I linked.  I am in the USA, so if you are not you might see something different.  As you can see, the individual products are offered.
While the pricing is for the USA, if you look at the pricing of the Creative Suite 6 Design Standard package, the price for it is the same as if you purchased Illustrator and InDesign as separate products.  So if you did buy the package you actually get what you wanted at the same price but get the benefit of the four other applications being included...
    Photoshop CS6
    Illustrator CS6
    InDesign CS6
    Acrobat X Pro
    Bridge CS6
    Media Encoder CS6

  • Indesign and Illustrator CS6 crash upon opening. Photoshop is fine.

    Hi,
Everytime I launch CS6 indesign and illustrator i keep getting the classic "indesign quit unexpectedly..." message. I have already run the Adobe Application Manager and updated everything and uninstalled, reinstalled both items again and yes I have restarted.
Falling drastically behind on work and looking for solutions fast! Any ideas anyone? Very gratefully received!
    Thanks

    did you clear the caches?
and onthe off-chance that ID got far enough to leave something behind, find the InDesign Recovery folder (a hidden folder, I think, since Snow Leopard or Lion) and empty it if there's anything there.

  • What happen to TOTAL TRAINING, where i can buy a tutorial in DVD of a creative cloud CC Design: InDesign, photoshop, illustrator, acrobat?

Many year ago, i bought the entire collection of DVD of Total Training of the Creative Suite Design, and came with InDesign, Photoshop, illustrator, acrobat, version cue, and was wonderfull learn all, now 10 years ago, i try to get now the Creative Cloud CC for Design, and only found tutorials online, or with Lynda.com any sugestions?

Looking at the current options readily accessible on Adobe.com, for students and teachers it appears that the only options are to get the entire suite for $20/month or the photographers bundle (LR + PS) for $100/year thru Aug 29, so not sure what the price would be, now, so no there is not a way to get 3 apps for cheaper than the entire suite, since there is no single-app price.
If it’s any consolation, for non-educational individuals, the single app price is $20/month and the full-suite price is $50/month, so for three applications like you want to use, it’d be cheaper to go with the full-suite than buy three individual app subscriptions.
The bottom line is that as a student or teacher you’re able to access the full suite of apps for the price of a single app once you’re out of school, and that is as low as Adobe will go.
