Indesign VS My File= Indesign Wins

I was working on my project when suddenly Indesign crashed and my file became corrupted. I am unable to open my file at all and tried several if not numerous solutions to this problem. I've opened it as a copy, I duplicated the file and re-named it, I also opened a new file and tried "pasting" into the new document but no luck. I've also tried dumping peferences and opening it on a freshly installed CS5. I've tried opening it on several other computers and even on MACs to no avail. Other solutions I am unable to try because the file refuses to open at all. I'm very well aware of Markzware but I refuse to pay such a high fee on top of the hundreds of dollars I paid for Indesign already. I can understand if its professional client work with gigs worth of work, but not 20 megs. My final is due this coming Monday and I've torn Google and the Adobe forums apart, I'm hoping I've missed something that someone can suggest because I really don't think I can endure any more work with the other classes that I haven't even started to work on. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I tried looking at your file and it throws error code 4 before crashing here. I also used Conversions plus to view it as text and it seems to have some strange additional text about Canon revenue generation that I've never seen before in an ID file. That text and part of the header are repeated twice, and I suspect that may be the problem, but I don't have a binary editor or any experience trying to externally edit an ID file, so I couldn't try removing that stuff manually. Opening and trying to edit in a text editor is not a good plan.
If Jongware is awake and sees this, he might have some thoughts, but I've not found any references to anyone recovering a file with error code 4 other than placing into a new file (error importing this one -- so ng) or using Markzware.
Presuming the file is, indeed, toast, you can at lleast take away from this experience a lesson in backing up your work. Anything important should be backed up every time it's changed, and in a differnt location. In addition, I suspect since you appear to be a student that you are saving files to either an external drive or a network location. Probably more than 90% of this kins of error report is associated with some sort of external storage, and a safer practice would be to copy the file to the local drive for editing, then copy back to the external location.

    I'm using KDE4.
In Zim, Tools / Edit source opens the txt file with Wine Notepad. I guess this is the default association for txt files in GTK. How can I change this without using Gnome?

Yes ,desktop and mimelist files in ~/.local. I have survived these anomalies to learn its much less pain to use windoze apps under virtualization environment than under emulation. And poweroff the virtual machine whenever it hangs.

  • Unable package OSX indesign file on Win Server

I package on to a AD based server,,, it creates a folder.. but it is empty
I package locally on my MP desk top it's ok..
Using CS5 .. but problem was there since CS4

Package the file to your Desktop and see if you can copy it up. My money is on file name length being the issue. If you can then it is time to call the helpdesk or Active Directory administrator to ensure that you have enough permissions for InDesign.
Though many run InDesign over the network it isn't officially supported and I think generally the permissions level is like most applications in the print industry where they ask for a broadbrush huge amount of permissions. I don't believe there is a system administrator guide for permissions anywhere, as that is considered supporting network indesign work.
I don't think Active Directory is wildly popular in the Mac world, but they have made progress every release since Panther to make it better. If the file name isn't your issue you may want to see if your AD administrator can set you up with a stunt share with full permissions to see if ID will play nice with it. My bet, again, is on file name length.

  • Error installing 11gR1 using Response file on Win 7 b/c version 6.1 not 6.0

Hi everyone, I am hoping someone can help me, I searched the forum but I couldn't find anything similar to the problem I am having.
I have just got a new laptop with Win 7. I have the 11gR1 64bit Oracle download files and I am trying to install it using the command prompt with --responsefile.

    Hi;
Microsoft Windows 7 certification will begin with Oracle Database 11gR2 (11.2.0.x). That means, Oracle Database 11gR2 will be the first Oracle Database product certified/supported with Microsoft Windows 7.
You need to download 11gR2 (11.2.0.x).
    For details:
Is Microsoft Windows 7 certified to install/run Oracle Database Server/Client ? [ID 952302.1]

  • Firefox 6.0 w/ win media player plugin 1.0.0.8 enabled ALWAYS asks if I want to open a .wmv file with Win Media Player.

Firefox 6.0 would not open .wmv files, so I downloaded and installed M/S windows media player firefox plugin, ver 1.0.0.8.
I have checked using the plugin mgr that it is installed and enabled, but firefox still will not open .wmv files - It still brings up a window asking if I want to use Win Media Player to open the file.

You have an outdated version of Flash installed.
Uninstall the current copy of Flash then reinstall, instructions here.

  • I cannot acess files onmy Win XP Pro server from my three win 8.1 umits

Okay, I'm finally off of most of the medicinal drugs and I still cannot get my share/use commands to work.
My environment is 4 PCs local network (one win 8.1 laptop (wireless), one win 8.1 desktop (hardwired and wireless), one win 8.1 tablet (wireless) and one win XP Pro - SP3 desktop (wireless) - the drive is an NTFS formatted drive.
On the in XP server with simple file sharing turned "OFF", I created a net user command that added a user.  I set a password for this account and then the /add: operator. I used the /homedir: option to set the home
directory to the root directory of drive "C".  I used the Net localgroup command to move don.farr into the administrator group.  Both commands execute properly on the XP server.  I also issue a net share command to share the root directory
    of drive "C".
Using the laptop (Win 8.1) I do a net use command with the password for the drive appended to the end of the net use command.
When I try to access the files on my z: drive, I get "access denied" messages regardless of which method I use to get to the data files.  For example, using "cmd" I switch to z: and cd into the root directory.  I can do
a "dir"and see all the files, but if I try to do a "type" or even open the file with notepad (example "autoexc.bat") I get an access denied message.
Now, just to make matters more interesting, if I do "remote access", I can get to the drive and do just about anything I want to.  Also, if I issue a "Net Session" command, I will see the user (don.farr) as a listed user but instead
of seeing the proper fullname. I do see the IP address followed by the user name.
On the win XP Pro system, if I issue the Net user command, I see user set up in the administrator group.
So I ask, what in the world am I doing wrong that is preventing my in 8.1 from full access to my in XP Pro drive.
This only became an issue of late because I am recovering from knee surgery and my ability to move to the different computers is a severe challenge at this immediate point in time.
    Please help me!

The most probable reason  stems from difference between SMB versions. W XP is SMB 1 and W 7 and 8.x are 2 or more. Lower higher version Windows to lower SMB. Sometimes other configuration items may play the role, namely
autotuning. Also versio 6.x Wiindows has different mechanism for neighbor discovery.
Root directory is usually shared by default and is accessible to local administrator.
I do recommend to place your question into public forum answers.microsoft.com

  • How to display unicode or save to file on win 2000

I'm not sure if this is a stupid question but I'll try it.
First my system win 2000 ( German ) with installations of additional languages.
    jdk 1.5.0
    My first code is:
System.out.println('\u0400');Why does I get the ? sign in std. output? This is a cyrillic sign sign and I've installed cyrillic language to my OS.
    2nd code:
    BufferedWriter br = new BufferedWriter(new FileWriter(new File("D:\\projects\\test\\unicode.txt")));
    br.write("test : " + '\u0449');
    br.close();When I edit this file I see: test : ?
Why happend this? I read in oracle documents that win2000 support unicode and also the size from this file is not like expect. It has 8 bytes but if this is really stored in unicode it need 9 bytes because the last sign need 2 bytes.
    Every tip is welcome
    regards Dietmar

The character may be cyrillic, but the platform's default character encoding (windows-1252 in your case) doesn't support this character, so it's converted to a question mark. You have to explicitly state the character encoding, e.g. "UTF-8" if you want to use Unicode.

  • Two components do PublishedStaticFiles over the same file, who wins?

    Hi,
    I use UCM 11G PS4.
Does anyone knows how PublishedStaticFiles is working, I know it publish
    resources into the weblayout/resources/wcm/custom.
But does anyone knows what happens if two components try to publish same file?
I will expect that Content Server to merge the 2 published files into one
    depending by loadOrder.
Can anyone tell me what is the difference between PublishedStaticFiles and PublishedWeblayoutFiles?
    Regards,
    Cipi

The PublishedStaticFiles and PublishedWeblayoutFiles tables are essentially the same thing, in that they both define where to publish in the Weblayout folder/directory. However, PublishedStaticFiles is used to publish static items like images, while PublishedWeblayoutFiles is generally used to publish dynamic items like layouts. When you're in the config manager, the "Publish static layout files" and "Publish dynamic layout files" publish those tables, respectively. A brief overview can be read on Kyle's post.
As far as merging published files, no, that is not possible. The Content Server publishes all component files, but if any have the same file name, the component with the bigger (higher) loadOrder will "win" and its file will override the other.
For instance, in the .hda file of the component you want to be loaded, you'll have:
    @ResultSet MergeRules
    4
    fromTable
    toTable
    column
    loadOrder
SSOPublishedStaticFiles <-- your table that defines where in the weblayout directory you want to publish your files to
    PublishedStaticFiles
    null
500 <--loadOrder (set the value to something big like 500)

  • Sharing file with win vista

    Hi all,
I've set sharing in Mac side and selected user account for this purpose.
From Win side, only GUEST account can be access but not allowed to write access
the folder. The error from win side is that user/password not match. I've enabled
the "share file and folder using SMB" and enable the user and also made sure the password is correct.
    Pls help

Hi, After my post, I followed your link and realized that what I suggested had been covered by the article, sorry. Sounds like we have similar situations so let's see if we can work this out... I remember when I originally connected my G4 to my Windows network last January, I could not get the volumes on the Win side to mount because of this "alias" error message. I finally resolved the problem with a setting change on my Win PC, not the Apple. I have a LinkSys Cable Modem, Router, Switch and AirPort Extreme (wireless) for my Network equipment. All PC's and APE are connected to the Switch via ethernet. The Switch is connected to the Router and the Router to the Cable Modem. All connected devices are set to DHCP (automatic) and my Router is configured as the DHCP server. All devices automatically are assigned an IP from the Router when they boot up. Now... when your Mini is connected via ethernet... what do you see when you click on Network? I see my Win computers with the name I set up under Network ID. When I click on the computer (to mount a volume) I get the first window which asks me to select a shared volume on that computer, then I get the authentication window. Make sure you have entered the correct workgroup and user name/password for that computer/volume. I find it easier if I just share the whole drive for testing as it is easier than setting up individual shares. Once it is working, I can go back and re-configure.

  • Unable to preview jpg tif files in Win 8 Explorer

Before installing Design Std CS6 (not CC) plus Acrobat XI Pro, I was able to preview jpg and tif files in Windows 8 Explorer in any of the views (XLg, Large, Medium icons) and in the Preview Pane. However, now I only see the program icon, regardless of what application (P'shop or Win Photo Viewer) I associate it with. PDFs display fine in Win Preview.
I know I can preview in Bridge, but how do I get back the ability to preview JPGs and TIFs in Win Explorer as well?

Okay, problem has been solved: the Adobe install changed two Windows Explorer Folder Options (View > Options > Folder Options: View tab) - Always show icons, never thumbnails and Display file icon on thumbnails were checked after the install, but not before (I hooked up cloned HD I had made before the install to check). I can now see thumbnails (instead of program icons) in Win Explorer in the various views (Large icons, Medium icons, etc), as well as in Preview Pane. Hallelujah!!
Can't imagine why anyone would want program icons instead of thumbnails - or why in $&!^% Adobe would cause that change to be made on the install, but everything's back to normal and I'm a happy camper once again.
Thanks again for sticking with this, kglad - I really appreciate it! Hope this helps someone else.  Case closed.           ~Carol

  • Question: What is the best platform to run exe files? Wine,Cedega, etc.

I've tryed Wine it takes alot of configuration that I'm not to familiar with. I would love to order a commercial version but my credit is shot for ordering software threw the internet. I wish there was a software store in my mall besides the usual stores. There's not enough support out there for Linux. Is there any good websites that describe the best way to run wine or cause I want to utilize my programs and not just my games.

I've tried both CX office and Cedega, but I don't like that much GUI help...
I prefer the raw wine configuration via regedit and winecfg, also wine is getting better and the configuration method are not that hard.
BTW the apps mentioned by thayer also work flawless under wine
Also if I need application, for which I have no linux alternative, and there is no way to run it with wine (like blizzard torrent file downloader, that Blizzard use when they release something new free for download and didn't run well on 0.9.45 (fixed now, though) I use Vbox)

  • Photoshop files from win to mac?

    hallo!
i'm waiting for my imac to come and in the meantime i'm making a cd cover in photoshop 5.0 on a win98SE.
my platform kind of s*°ks and i try hard to work with big files, but now in less then a week my iMac G5 will be here and i'll start to finish the job of the cd with it...(so glad about it).
does someone have an idea if could be a problem to transfer the .psd files from photoshop 5.0 win to a photoshop cs on mac?
I really hope is gonna work!
    Thanx for any reply!
    Pietro

you're saying that i can save the file with that option, maybe?
You actually don't have a choice. All Windows files have an extension so the OS knows what application it's related to. To make Windows look more like a Mac (OS 9 and earlier at the time), they designed Windows '95 and later to hide known extensions. So even if you don't see .psd at the end of your document name, it's there. Just be aware that because it's hidden, it may look on the CD to the Mac as if it has no extension. That's no problem though. Just add it after you've copied the file off of the CD onto your Mac by renaming the file.
how can i rasterize my font layers to maintain the design?
I can't remember if Photoshop 5 has that option. But it would be Layer>Rasterize>Type.
or maybe i better get the equivalent fonts for mac on internet?
If it's a free font anyway, then sure. Otherwise, rasterizing the font layers will work just fine.

  • Converting Mac .p65 files to win .p65 files?

I have to convert some old Pagemaker 6.5 Mac files to Pagemaker 6.5 Windows files. I no longer have the mac computer but I do have Pagemaker 6.5 Win loaded on to a PC computer. But the windows program will not convert the files. Why is that and what do I need to make it happen?
    Thanks

Pagemaker will open cross platform as long as they are the same version. There is no conversion necessary. All I can think is the files are corrupt or they are not the same version.
You can email me some files and I will check them for you ZIP them first. Click my name for email addy.
