InDesign vs Photoshop for templates

While I have access to InDesign, I've only used it once or twice. (I used QuarkXpress when I used to do print design but now rarely do print.) I need to give a Realtor some postcard designs as templates that she can modify herself. She has never used either Photoshop or InDesign and will have to learn to use them, so I've recommended that she hire a local tutor. She will need to edit text and fit photos within areas currently defined in Photoshop with layer masks. Are there strong reasons for giving her the files as InDesign templates vs. Photoshop? InDesign is ideally suited for this kind of application; Photoshop can be used for this, but it is not a good way to go. As such, I would recommend that you steer your client toward InDesign for this. For training in InDesign, nothing beats Lynda.com for the quality and breadth of training available for all of the Adobe products. Hope this helps!

Difference between InDesign and Photoshop PDFs for printing?

Hi, rather new to the whole printing business, forgive me.
I have both InDesign and Photoshop, but I am better versed in Photoshop. Is there a significant difference between the capabilities for saving a PDF for print between the two? Also, would someone else be able to tell which program I made the PDF with?

Like most operations, one tool or the other is more appropriate according to the makeup of the task. It's not just about which PDF is somehow "better," (there are many ways to produce PDF's, and the quality of output isn't necessarily directly dependent upon the originating application), but rather which tool is the correct one for the job.
For instance, a movie poster can certainly be done completely in Photoshop to good effect. But, if I was laying out the pages of a textbook, where images and longer passages of paragraph-based text were to be mixed, the typographical and document assembly capabilities of InDesign would be indispensible. That's just an example. The very essence of art and design is learning and devising ways to use the available tools alone and in combination to produce a particular result, effect, or solution.

New laptop for Indesign and Photoshop CC

Thinking this new work system is a little weak for the task of full time indesign and Photoshop CC use (with outlook and office programs running also), but interested in recommendations before downloading and getting all set up. Working on up to 80 page indesign files linking to hundreds of high resolution PSD images.

With regards to configuration, if you don't have more than 4GB of memory and if you are running Windows, you cannot reasonably run the 64-bit version of Windows and you need the 64-bit version of Windows to run the 64-bit version of InDesign and Photoshop.
For any type of graphic arts work these days, you should not consider any system with less than 8GB of memory.
In terms of compatibility, the current version of InDesign has had no problem opening any of the InDesign documents that I have dating back to InDesign 1.0 (and even beta test versions of same)! For long lines of text, you may see some reflow from very early InDesign versions or slightly different hyphenation, but document integrity should be there.
There should be no compatibility problems at all with the latest version of Photoshop opening older PSD files.

Colors look different in browser window than in InDesign or Photoshop

So, the colors look quite different (brighter) on Kuler (in
my Firefox browser window), than when I download or copy the CMYK
numbers exactly over to InDesign or Photoshop. In Kuler, the colors
are significantly brighter and more saturated than how they appear
in my design software.
My coworker theorizes that InDesign & Photoshop are
'compensating' for how the color will actually look when printed.
Thoughts? Is there a setting I need to change on either
Firefox or my Adobe software so the colors match up?

I have a similar problem - colours look brigher in Firefox,
IE and Photoshop, darker in Illustrator and Dreamweaver. I've tried
resetting the color settings in Bridge, but still get the same
difference between Photoshop, and Illustrator and Dreamweaver. I
can't understand this at all. I don't know if it has something to
do with the fact that I have a color profile called "Natural Color
Pro" installed on my computer (came with the monitor) which
Photoshop reminds me is faulty every time I open it - I tell it to
ignore the profile. I don't seem to be able to uninstall it for

Have Creative Cloud - Cannot get off the trial versions of InDesign and Photoshop

Downloaded and installed trial version of InDesign CS6 (three days left on trial)
Purchased Creative Cloud two days ago
Downloaded and installed Photoshop CS6 (loads as a trial version)
When clicking on Registration number, get error message “not connected to Internet”
Live chat instructed to uninstall both InDesign and Photoshop and download again.
Cancelled Cloud
Next day phone rep spent ½ hour trying to get it to work. Said it would all work and helped me re-purchase Cloud – received email confirmation.
Phone rep passed me on to someone who was supposed to give me a registration number. Spent another ½ hour doing the exact same thing. Was told there are no registration numbers in Cloud. Wanted to pass me off to another support department – I declined.
Received email today:

Edit Selection Indicator For Template Buttons

I have been searching for an answer to my question but have not been able to find an answer. Perhaps because I'm not searching for the proper terminology.
I applied the Apple template "Wedding Classical Index" to a menu, and am now trying to customize it in order to create a template for automated chapter index creation. I have been able to reposition everything so far except for the indicators that show which button is selected. I repositioned the button text... but now these indicators are not in the correct location. Is there a way to move them... or is there a way to turn them off and export the menu to photoshop and create my own overlay in photoshop for button selection indicators?

I think you could take a screenshot of the menu, then use that in Photoshop (after resizing to 720x480 if needed) and create an overlay, then select your new overlay in DVDSP. It might require some tweaking. You also may then have to create a new template.

If you didn't have the opportunity to deactivate the installations then you should contact Adobe Support thru chat and ask them to reset your activations for all the serial numbers involved.

I don't know if it mentioned it in the troubleshooting steps, but one trap that can be a gotcha is if you have different langauge settings in Photoshop and the Desktop Application manager. Sounds daft, but English International, and English North American are two different langauges.

How Do I Import A Photoshop CS4 Template into Dreamweaver CS4

Ok. Here's the deal, my friend and I spent alot of time working in Photoshop to come up with a nice template. He's even done all the coding to animate the buttons for standard, hover over, and click and all that. It's really cool, the buttons slide back and "lock" into place dependent upon which page you're on. However, I want to take all of that information and plug it into my website without loosing the button functionality. Unfortunately, every time I try to put the photoshop web template into Dreamweaver, it always converts it into an image. So, how do I add my complete photoshop web template and all it's functionality into Dreamweaver?

I'm afraid Photoshop is a graphics program ill suited for generating good HTML and CSS code. Use Photoshop to create your images only. Use DW to build your HTML, CSS and menus.

InDesign to Dreamweaver for web

What is the best format and method for exporting from InDesign to Dreamweaver? I create a number of e-flyers where I set up the html file in Dreamweaver, view it in the browser and then send by email, embedding the content in the email as an e-flyer. Up until now I have been creating images for the flyers in Photoshop. Now that I have had training and am getting more proficient, I want to do all my design work in InDesign - flyers, posters etc, including content for my e-flyers and the web and use Photoshop to format any images that I eventually place in ID.
Would the best way dimply be to export the indd documents as jpgs and insert them in Dreamweaver as images, or is there a better way? Will that also export any hyperlinks that were created in InDesign?

InDesign is for print documents (and to an extent epub)
Fireworks is geared towards creating banners, flyers, etc. for use in Dreamweaver. You would be able to add hyperlinks etc. but how they translate when being sent through mail systems is a bit of hit and miss.
You're better off as Bob said, to use the likes of Mail Chimp for email campaigns.
If you want your Indesign layout in Dreamweaver, then you will have to recreate it in Dreamweaver. As for CSS etc. working with exported HTML - that's great, but it can be complex to get that CSS to work through many different browsers.
Frankly, you'll have to use the right tool for the specific job.
I find it easier to just make a pdf from InDesign and either make the PDF a JPG in the email - or to just send the link for the PDF so the person can open that.
You're sorta wasting your time hoping for your InDesign files to automagically jump to Dreamweaver. But if you need the text to remain intact, then using Fireworks would be the better choice over Photoshop for recreating the artwork for Dreamweaver.
I suggest you take some classes in becoming a Web master to get the basics down.

How to uninstall CS6 Indesign and Photoshop silently?

We have a situation where we have to uninstall CS6 Indesign and Photoshop from dozens of computers. I would like to do this silently using Psexec or SCCM. So far I haven't been able to figure out how to do that. We have installed both using a msi file and I have tried command "msiexec.exe /uninstall C:\Temp\Build\indesigncs6.msi /quiet" for indesign but nothing happens. When taking the quiet command away I get an error saying "This feature can only be used to programs that have been installed". The error message has been roughly translated from Finnish so it probalbly isn't excatly the same in English versions. Obviously this computer has Indesign installed.
I have also tried the PDApp.exe, but haven't been able to run that silently either. Command I've tried is C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\OOBE\PDApp\core\PDApp.exe --appletID="DWA_UI" --appletVersion="2.0" --mode="silent" --mediaSignature="{CFB770D7-8D43-1014-922B-CC2715FADE3F}"
Is there a person who has successfully been able to silently uninstall Adobe Indesign or Photoshop CS6? If there is can you please tell us how to do it?

Thanks for answering. I tried to contact Adobe Support, but could not find out how to do that. I went to the Adobe Contact site and filled in what kind of problem I have and it just suggests that I ask from the community. If I try anything else it just leads me to the beginning.
You are absolutely correct that the CC Cleaner Tool is the way to do this. I have been able to generate cleanup.xml and used it. The problem is that the tool only finds Adobe Photoshop CS6 Driver version 13.0, Adobe Indesign CS6 Application Base Files version 8.0 and Adboe ID Credentials. It deletes these very efficiently and quietly. Problem is that it does not uninstall the whole program. For example all Adobe programs are still in the Start Menu and the Indesign folder is still found where it used to be. Have you any experience on this kind of problem?

Port InDesign or Photoshop to iWeb?

A graphic designer/art director friend is going to design a site for me, but doesn't know or work in iWeb. He works in inDesign and Photoshop. Is there a way to take what he designs in one of those programs, and port it somehow/import/something, into iWeb????

Copy/paste graphics? Do you mean pics, jpegs, etc etc?
