InDesign vs Photoshop - why does InDesign blow everything up past 100%?

So I'm new to InDesign but old hat with Photoshop. I'm creating a table in InDesign based on a mock-up that I created in Photoshop. This is all going fine but my problem is when I export to PDF to test the results.. the table is far bigger in PDF than it is in PSD so the quality looks really bad.
I placed the PSD to as a reference into InDesign and I created my table as the same size. Is it possible to make the PDF export 'zoom out' as it were so that it is identical to my intended PSD size? This is really frustrating because I have some raster images that I need to use in InDesign which will look really bad when view at > 100%.
How can I make the InDesign stage / export the same as Photoshop's so on export, InDesign output the same 100% dimensions?
Any advice / suggestions?
Thanks

Probably not. The two programs are radically different.
Remember, in Photoshop, when you view at actual size your image will ALWAYS look the same, no matter what resolution is currently assigned (try it -- change the resolution without resampling and there will be no difference in the display when you return).Your "full size view is tied to the number of pixels, not how large or small they are used on the page.
Resolution only becomes meaningful when an image is placed onto a page with physical dimensions. If you save two versions of your image without reampling, one at 72 ppi and one at 288 ppi, then place them both in a single ID file, they will be different sizes on the page. Now scale the small one 200% and the large one 50%. They should look identical. If you select each in turn and open the Info Panel when you look at the resolution information you'll see the saved resolution listed for "actual," but they both should say 144ppi for "effective resolution."
In InDesign the resolution determines the size of each pixel, like blowing up a printed ballon. As you inflate the balloon the resolution goes down and the size of each pixel is phyically larger, and you deflate the balloon the resolution goes up and the pixels become physically smaller. Scaling the image on the page affects the "effective" resolution, zooming the page does not.

  • When importing RAW files in Photoshop why does camera raw 8.6 only import 1 size?

When importing RAW files in Photoshop why does camera raw 8.6 only import 1 size from canon 5d mark iii, in older versions I used to be able to import the files as larger images. It use to have a number of options for the images size. The option now is smaller than the maximum size used to be.

You know what - I'm sorry
I'd had a crazy long all-nighter session sorting out images for a client, then decided - when I should have simply gone to bed - to set up the new photoshop. At the very start I made a silly mistake, tried to sort it out then decided to call it a day, responding to your remarks with the problem still in my head but feeling more and more tired.
Responded again to your comment earlier with the problem still in my head but not in front of me on the screen - however with a fresh head I just turned it all on, opened up PS and today could instantly see what was going on - Oops!

  • Why does Bridge blow out thumbnails when adding new images?

Using Win 7 (64b) with CS6 and Bridge 5.0.2.4 x64 (CS6). I use Bridge in my workflow to catalog and tag images. I added 7000+ older photos in various file formats, Canon CR2, TIF, JPG, and PSD to my single directory containing all shots. As Bridge created thumbnails for all newly added shots, everything was looking good but then I noticed Bridge went back and lightened many of the thumbnails by ~ 1 EV. A few images were lightened by as much 2-3 EV and unusable (non-identifiable images).
When launching the non-identifiable image in Photoshop CS6 from bridge, tonal values and exposure are just fine. The images can be edited  and saved. Tried solving by deleting image from directory. then restoring it (with different filename) before restarting Bridge. In one case, it worked. The newly renamed and regenerated thumbnail was fine. In other cases, no matter what I do, the image blows out.
This is quite frustrating. Thumbnails just plain look bad. Don't have a lot more hair to pull.
    Thanks for any help

Hmmm. That's not very convenient and it doesn't prevent my mistake. At the cost of a lot more typing, it can prevent other scripts from accidentally referencing or colliding with your variable names, but it doesn't prevent you from accidentally colliding with other people's variables if you leave off the object qualifier when you are typing.
When I saw a reference to namespaces in something I was reading, It thought it was more like real namespaces (e.g. C++ namespaces) where you define a scope where all declared or referenced variables are automatically in that namespace unless they are explicitly referenced/declared otherwise. Does JavaScript not have that capability?
It would be more like this:
    namespace MyProgram {
    var i = 3;
// lots of other code here
With a real namespace, "i" wouldn't be a global variable. It's real name/declaration would be MyProgram.i or MyProgram::i depending upon the syntax.
Does JavaScript not have real namespaces?
I get that I can explicitly declare everything to a scope of MyProgram to simulate some benefits of namespaces, but that's a lot of extra typing and, presumably a bunch of extra work for the interpreter since there's at least one extra dictionary lookup for every variable or function reference.

  • Why does distiller include everything on the page?

    Hi,
each time I convert an EPS illustrator file into a PDF file using distiller everything outside the artboard is included which makes the document way larger then it is setup to be (i.e. A4 or letter size).
What ever it is, Acrobat Distiller will either shrink or enlarge the document size to inlcude everything on the page even if it's outside the artboard.
How can I setup Acrobat Distiller to create a document according to the actuall document size?
    thanks
    mic

Technically, there is no page size in an .eps.
You'll need to place the document in a new page (in InDesign if you have it) without all of the extra stuff. Then print that to PDF.
Or you can possibly print to a PDF right from Illy and THAT should honor the page size in Illy.

  • Why does Lion open everything each time I start my MacBook?

Every time I turn on my MacBook, Lion opens my calendar, email, my virtual computer, etc.  Each time I shutdown, I uncheck "Reopen windows when logging back in".  The next time I startup, all is well, but then the next time I shutdown, the "Reopen windows...." boxed is checked again.  I never want my windows (especially my virtual computer) to open automatically.  I'll open them when I need them.  Why do I have to remember to uncheck the box each and every time I shut down?  Isn't there a way to answer this once and leave it that way?

    One more thing:
Go to (User) ~/Library/Saved Application State Folder
(user library is now hidden; to unhide, hold Option key and go to Go menu > Library will now be visible)
Select all content in that folder and move to Trash.
Right click (or Command + I) to "Get Info" window.
Unlock lock > input your admin password
    Click the Locked option here:
Lock lock at bottom of window.
Doing this will lock the folder so nothing can be written to it. There haven't been any entries and I haven't noticed the Resume feature since I did that (although I still uncheck the box in the shutdown dialog....that, unfortunately, is still present).

  • Why does iPhoto blow up when I click on import?

I open iPhoto, then click on "import to library" so I can select a file to import, and iPhoto blows up right away. Up comes an long error of some kind that says the error report will be sent to Apple. And, here I am!

As a quick fix attempt try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Lion, Mt. Lion or Mavericks delete the contents the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
    Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If you're running Mavericks, 10.9,  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:

This has nothing to do with fonts used;  It is very likely you are copying the entire page and pasting it on your page without checking what is being pasted.  After pasting, you need to edit out the text that is not relevant  in your project or to just copy the text that you are interested in before pasting it.
Are you following the tutorial strictly and following the instructions carefully?  The tutorial will tell you which text you need to copy and paste.on your page.
The css code you have pasted here is not going to solve any problems without the associated html going with it.  You really need to upload the page to a free host such as coffeecup.com.
    Hope this helps.

  • Why can't i copy and paste a calendar event?

Why does Apple not implement copy/paste of events in the iPhone and iPod calendar. People have asked for this very simple feature for years now, and Apple is unresponsive. Furthermore, I have been told by several calendar app developers that Apple will not allow them to implement the feature. For example, Calvetica and Week Cal HD both told me they were not allowed by Apple to implement copy/paste. Additionally, Week Cal HD had implemented the feature, and Apple removed the app from the store! What is going on here? I think we deserve an answer. Windows Mobile always allowed copy/paste of calendar entries, even many years ago. This just doesn't make sense unless there is some bigger issue in play. I also notice that the calendar is never included in the list of OS apps. Does Apple not own the calendar app it provides as standard?

Sounds like what he wants is an explanation. Like Rockpaper said, that's at least partially what these forums are for.  I know this is an old thread, but I wouldn't mind hearing an explanation myself.  The lack of that functionality is pretty mind boggling, you have to admit.

  • Why does InDesign create widows when you split a paragraph?

Take a look at the two screen grabs. In this first one the price £48.25 fits at the end of the fourth line.
But I want to split the paragraph at that point. Look what happens when I do:
Why does it do that? As you see from the first example, the type will fit happily on the line above with the same hyphenation and justification settings. Why should splitting the paragraph make a difference?
This feature enrages every production journalist on my UK national newspaper every working day of our lives. We don't like to put minus tracking on text and the only other way I know to counteract this effect is to reduce the word space values in the justification settings for the affected paragraph (we're working in Single Line Composer, by the way – Paragraph Composer makes it even worse). Sometimes even that doesn't work without everything looking too squished. If we can't edit the text to solve the issue (and why should we if we're otherwise happy with it?) then we have to construct a fake new paragraph using fixed spaces for the indent and baseline shift to create the 1pt space we insert between pars.
The font in this example is Corporate E Bold, in case that has any bearing.
Is there any other way round this, some mystical unknown setting that turns it off? If not, was it ever fixed in later versions of InDesign? My company uses CS3 and is not likely to update it for many years.
    Thanks

Because it uses paragraph composing to adjust for the best possible spacing within a line calculated on other lines here is how it works there are two types
    Adobe Single Line Composer
    and
    Adobe Paragraph Composer
Paragraph composer is the default - and here's the rules on how both work:
    Adobe Single-Line Composer.
Some programs use single-line composition to flow text. It goes line by line through a paragraph and sets each line as well as possible using the  hyphenation & justification settings. When you modify the spacing of one line then the lines above and below that are not taken into consideration. If you adjust the space within a line it can cause poor spacing on the next line, which as they say in the business - tough luck.
When you use Adobe Single-Line Composer, the following rules apply:
Adjusting word spacing is preferred over hyphenation.
Hyphenation is preferred over glyph spacing.
If spacing must be adjusted, removing a space is preferred over adding a space.
    Adobe Paragraph Composer
Adobe Paragraph Composer (which was called the Multi-Line Composer in previous versions) is turned on by default. It takes a broader approach to composition by taking the entire paragraph compoistion in one go. If you have a poorly spaced line it can be fixed by adjusting the spacing in the previous lines, so that the Paragraph Composer reflows the previous line.
The Paragraph Composer is has the following rules:
The evenness of letter spacing and word spacing is the given the highest priority. The possible breakpoints is determined by how much they cause word and letter spacing to vary from the desired settings.
Uneven spacing is preferred to hyphenation. A breakpoint that does not need a hyphenation is preferred over one that does.
All possible breakpoints are ranked, and good breakpoints are preferred over bad ones.
The paragraph composer is more sophisticated than the single-line option, offering generally better overall spacing because it sacrifices optimal spacing a bit on one line to prevent really bad spacing on another, something the single-line method does not do.
There is one frustration in dealing with the paragraph composer: When you try to edit text or play with tracking to get rid of an orphan or widow, the paragraph composer keeps adjusting the text across several lines, often counteracting your nips and tucks. The single-line composer doesn’t do that.
