Indesign weird spacing in justification..

Can't figure out what is causing these strange spaces in my justified type.. the lines that are turning over should NOT BE and if they were flowing correctly those odd spaces would adjust.. something is making lines turn over WAY out of wack.. I can't figure it out. It's not a forced soft return in there as you can see from the hidden characters.

ME AGAIN! when I changed my DECIMAL tab stop to align the numbers to a LEFT aligning one, it fixed it.. not sure WHY though.. anyone? this is the AFTER fix pict....

  • Indesign line spacing control

I can't find the line spacing control to change from single spacing to double. Can someone tell me where it is?

    I just found it!
This was on Adobe's InDesign Help site:
    Change the default leading percentage
Select the paragraphs that you want to change.
Choose Justification from the Paragraph panel menu or from the Control panel menu.
For Auto Leading, specify a new default percentage. The minimum value is 0%, and the maximum value is 500%.
But thank you very much Peter, you were right on!

  • InDesign CS4 - Paragraph Style - Justification not applying

    Hello,
I am in college and Indesign is the software we use for our projects.  The version we have is CS4.  This is the second project where I've had an issue with the justification.  I can use the justification icons at the top to move the text where I want it after applying the paragraph style, but this causes the little override + to show up and that's not allowed.  My instructor says we should use the style itself.  I'm happy to do that and have found the justification area in the paragraph style setup, however, no matter what justification I specify (with the text highlighted and preview enabled), the text does not move.  I've also set it, applied it then gotten back to the document just in case it was a preview-only error but it still doesn't change.
Do I need to justify everything THEN apply the paragraph style to get around this?  If the justify option in the paragraph style settings doesn't actually move the text, what is it's intended purpose?
Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Do you mean this justification tab?
If so, I think it's purpose is to set the behavior of how single-word paragraphs are displayed when full justification is applied. In the previous screen shot, the third line of the paragraph is a single word (Obitatur), and all of the text is set to Full Justify (if you hover your cursor over the justification icons at the top of the screen, it's the one that reads: Justify all lines). Here, you can see that all of the letters are justified across the text frame, because Single Word Justification is set to Full Justify. Here are a few other examples:

  • Weird spacing in notes on iPhone 6 plus iOS 8.0.1

I Copy and pasted a list from an email. The format was like this:
    hello
    hello
    hello hello
    hello
    hello
    hello
okay so as you can see there is a space between every two lines. When I coppied this lits into notes and try to edit the note, it only double spaces when I add to the list. I can no long do this:
    hello
    hello
    hello
    hello
Instead, it shows up like this
    hello
    hello
    hello
    hello
For some reason, it double spaces. I can't get two lines to be single spaced.

  • InDesign: Letter spacing messed up in automatic page numbering

The numbers in my documents are smashed together when using automatic page numbering in InDesign.. They are fine when there is a single character (1-9 )but when there is two characters (10 or higher) the kerning is gone and the numbers overlap?
Anyone know why and how to fix?

I think I might have just figured it out...
I was cutting and pasting text boxes from masters above... deleting the special charactor and insearting agin in a text box that I had inserted one before instead of creating a new one to insert new special character... ID does not like that I guess

  • InDesign unpredictable spacing on top of text box.

Hello everyone. I have quite a frustrating problem that I'm assuming is an easy fix. InDesign is creating this empty space on top of my textbox depending where i place the box. In this case, I found the exact pixel position where when I move the box one px upward, it removes the space, but when I move it back down it adds the space. Any ideas what setting that might be and why is that useful? Right now it's only frustrating.
Note: This text is linked to another text box and nothing seems to change on the preceding text when this one has that space created.

Thank you very much. I didn't even know how to look up the solution.
Now I understand what those buttons do and their usefulness.

  • Weird spacing and overlapping elements.

    I'm running OS X 10.5.6 on a 2.4 GHz Intel Core Duo 24" iMac.
A huge number of web sites I view in Safari (3.2.1) and Firefox (3.0.1) have really strange spacing and elements of the site seem to overlap. Like the site is coded badly and not tested for mac.
I can't really remember if this problem started with a software update or if it has been there the whole time but It doesn't happen on my Intel MiniMac in work.
An example is this www.thrashermagazine.com . It works fine in work but is all crazy at home.
Anyone else having problems like this?

  • Weird character spacing in paragraphs

We are having issues where we are seeing random spacing in some of our paragraphs. Its not all paragraphs in a file and it always seems to be the first 1-2 characters of a line... but not every line in a paragraph. All our publications are generated at a server level with Typefi using templates where the main text paragraph styles are set to Adobe World-Ready Paragraph Composer as we also use the In Tools "World Tools" plugin due to occasions where we use arabic/hebrew/thai script etc and we dont want to have to activate/deactivate the plugin depending on what titles comes through production. Our font is MillerDailyOne and as we have used this font for sometime without issues across many products I tend to think its not a font issue per se.
We have just recently upgraded to CS6 from CS4 and its only since the upgrade we are seeing this issue.
Our current fix for affected paragraphs is to override the Adobe World-Ready Paragraph Composer with Adobe Paragraph Composer .... however this isn't ideal as it is a time consuming process going through an entire book identifying the affected paragraphs and we are finding that we fix one lot of paragraphs only to find that others are then affected somehow during our layout phase. Also not all of our titles have this issue... some titles go through production without any problems at all!
So my question is: has anyone seen this before and does anyone know exactly what the issue is?  Is it a bug with the Adobe World-Ready Paragraph Composer? The only other reference I've found to this issue was the reverse of what we are experiencing: extra space when using Minion Pro Font
ie. in first paragraph: E lvebakken/l ounge/a n/k itchen; in the 2nd paragraph: after the bracket; in third paragraph: G rillen

ok so I exported two files to IDML then opened them in CS6 again and the spacing remained the same, however when i opened each of these IDMLs in CS4 the issue disappeared!
As for PDFing the plot thickens! "Exporting" as a PDF the issue disappears, BUT if i generate the PDF via the "print" option in InDesign (which is how we generate our "to printer" pdfs) the issue remains.
Also whats interesting is that in one chapter the "extra space" is consistently after the first character of the line, whilst in the second chapter is it consistently after the second character of the line - except for the word "The" where it comes in as "T he"... And whilst they predominately come off the server with this issue I've just had feedback from production that its happening randomly in chapters during layout. If chapters are kerned it appears ok at first only to revert back to the weird spacing later on. And also, its appears to be mostly confined to a few pages here and there rather than consistently throughout a chapter. FYI masterpages are all the same. And just looking at this more closely it seems to be lines where words are hyphenated over two lines that are mostly affected - but not always...
Here's two more examples with non-printing characters (I've scaled them up so you can hopefully see the invisables). The first example is one character then a space, the second example is with two characters then a space....

  • Weird character in search result for HitHighlightedSummary property

We have a INTEG search center and display managed property 'HitHighlightedSummary', which is a out of box managed property
One of the results display as below in search result page:
"Issue 9 brings us the latest news from the Home Oxygen Service team … Don't forget to read CorpNEWS next week to get the latest Home Oxygen Service update.  "
Noticed that the last weird character? how does that happen? we have same setup in DEV env, but we don't get this issue, how to track down this issue.

The Ascii code 8203 stands for line break :
    http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/200b/index.htm
commonly abbreviated ZWSP ;  this character is intended for invisible word separation and for line break control; it has no width, but its presence between two characters does not prevent increased letter spacing in justification
A third party editor may be adding them , if they are not originally present in your script/code.
Are you using any such editor tools?
It will be helpful to open a troubleshooting ticket with Microsoft so that we can look at the issue in more depth.

  • Scrunching Up text in InDesign?

I have InDesign CS2. I have complained in the past that InDesign does not allow to scrunch up text as well as Quark. And people say it works fine. If there is too much space on one line, and I want to squeeze up one word from the next line, in Quark I would get to about -5 or 6, and it would pop up to the next line and look fine. In InDesign, nothing will happen until I get to -30 usually, and then when I does pop up to the above line, each word is very scrunched but still has huge spaces between the words, it doesn't work well at all? Am I missing something?
I am working on a project and having a frustrating time, thanks for any help.

Just because InDesign does not do things the same way as QuarkXPress does not mean InDesign is worse. In fact, it is universally accepted that InDesign text handling — especially its justification settings — kick the poop of of QuarkXPress’s. You have a lot to learn about InDesign and typesetting.
Read the help files, searching for “Adobe Paragraph Composer”. This is the main reason for the difference between the two programs. When InDesign is using full justification, it tries to keep the spacing on any one line close to the spacing on nearby lines, to prevent a widely spaced line from appearing near a closely spaced line. This is the work of Adobe Paragraph Composer. You can turn the feature off in the Justification dialogue available in the Paragraph panel. You will be doing yourself a disservice.
It has been years (GLOAT!) since I had to use QuarkXPress, but I also believe the units are very different. InDesign’s -20 means -2% of an em. This would equal -5 in QuarkXPress.

  • Why does my text in Indesign start on the right side instead of the left?

I have done something to the newsletter that I am working on, but I don't know what I did.
Whenever I try to write a caption on a picture or try to type a piece of text for the newsletter, the cursor starts on the right side instead of the left and makes weird spacing and never lines up correctly.
The only way I can get text to work now is to use a snipping tool and snip text from another program!

With just the text tool selected, but no text boxes selected (or made), any change to the style of paragraphs or fonts etc is 'set' for the document. If you have clicked on the right alignment tool with nothing selected, then everything from then onwards will default to right align.
If every document you've worked on is doing this, then open InDesign with no document open (so just the panels showing, but no file/doc open) and select left align with the text tool in use. Any setting made with InDesign like this, is default for any new document created. Colours, alignment, optical kerning, fonts, sizes, leading etc etc changed in this state, is the new default.

  • Adding file with hyperlink causes spacing issue

Everytime I add a hyperlink (that links to a file) in the middle of a paragraph it adds weird spacing above and below this line. It's fine if I am just linking to a url and only happened when I add the file. Any ideas?

    The problem is :
In the prePrint event you are only setting the presence property of the CheckBox to hidden. But in your form, the CheckBox is wrapped in a Subform. you need to set the presence property of the Subform to hidden instead of Checkbox.
Try replacing your code with this..
    in the prePrint Event:
         this.parent.presence = "hidden";
    in the postprint event:
         this.parent.presence = "visible";
Use the attached form. To make the form consitent with other sections, I removed the subform that wraps all the fields in OMFS/Excessive section.

  • IE6 div spacing issue

Ok, I've been searching the net for days now trying to figure
this out. I've tried several fixes, including setting
    vertical-align,
    display:block, and
    margin &
    padding properties on the divs.
The issue is that I'm creating a box that has a rounded top
and bottom to it, provided by background images in the associated
divs. FF/IE7 work fine (of course) but IE6 generates weird spacing
    between the divs.
You can find the example at
    http://www.ryanburrell.com/test.html
    http://www.ryanburrell.com/test.html">http://www.ryanburrell.com/test.html
Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

It seems the problem here is that in IE6, the empty div is
still being seen as having something in it. So it treats it as if
there were text in there so the height is not 10px, it is 20px or
so. Your background is only 10px heigh so that is why you are
seeing the white. Try using overflow:hidden; on those divs and it
    should go away.

  • When you attempt to print the end result is extremely tiny print that has each letter spaced thre or four spaces apart. Darn near impossible to read ! I am about ready to cancel the beta !

    Printing is a bitch !
    My eyes mat be 72 years old but I'm not blind but I seem about ready to go that way. I don't know why Firefox 4 beta affects whatever I try to print but it sure does ! every letter is about four spaces from the next letter. You should try reading the mess. w h y d o e s i t d o t h i s ? Y o u s h o u l d t r y r e a d i n g a f u l l p a g e !

That weird spacing is caused by a Bug in 4.0b12. It was fixed for the 4.0RC version due out this week. As far as the size of the letters being printed, that can be changed in File > Page Setup - '''Scale''' = 100% or Shrink to Fit is normal, but it can be made larger by going over 100% or using a '''Custom''' setting in Print Preview.

  • Coding weird spaces

OK, I finally posted my first iWeb (www.carlcreasman.com).
Looks great in Safari, but in Netscape and Firefox, I found a coding hiccup with some weird spacing thing. Here's an example from the code:
-- Dr. Sanford C. “Sandy” Shugart
Those little crosses, in Netscape and Firefox, turn into question marks as neither program knows what to do with it. Now, what those are in iWeb are merely spaces. I mean, its a quote from Dr. Shugart. I've chosen to space over (or I may have tabbed over) to place his name towards the right, under his quote.
Any idea how to fix that, either in iWeb or in the code itself?
Second question, once I fix it, can I just upload the newly saved fixed page to my host? I mean, if I fix something in the code to, say, bio.html. Can't I just upload that single page through my FTP program?

Why not put your favorite picture on the About page? You're right, I thought the first endorsement guy was you
Since I did not know anything about you until I perused your site, it's interesting to review my first impressions versus what I know after reading everything. The picture of you walking (if no one knew you) implied to me that the guy in the first endorsement picture did some kind of psychological medicine for those who were down and out. The picture of you walking does convey what I think you like about it... (just guessing here) that you're happy to be alive and just walking down the street, you still find joy in the experience. I see this now that I know more about you. But the picture also conveys a kind of isolation and since it's hard to see the expressions on your face, I read it as "life is lonely and these three expert looking guys can help you out of depression"... something like that.
    For what it's worth...
