InDesign won't export pdf

I'm using InDesign CS5 on OSX 10.8. I've tried to export multiple pdfs from various files and have this problem every now and then (Which happend on both OSX 10.7 and 10.8). The empty pdf file will start as if nothing is wrong and then just disappear after about 10-15 seconds. No error dialog pops up or anything.
One file in particular is about 50 pages long and when I've exported 1 or 2 select pages, it works fine somehow, just refuses to export the file in its entirety.
All of my software is up to date. Does anybody have any solutions?

I had to give in a just try your method, Peter.
The culprit was Acrobat's "convert to grayscale" function in Preflight. I had several pdfs that I had converted to grayscale this way and InDesign was inable to create a pdf of the pages that had said pdfs on them - literally almost every single one was a problem.
I have no idea why all of a sudden this is an issue as I've been doing this for a couple of years now and never had an issue until now. At least I got it working again though. Thanks everyone!

  • Automatically add InDesign metadata to Exported PDF

    Dear InDesigners,
For the studio I work it became important to make visible which person (Author) worked on a certain document as well as what the latest version of that specific document is.
It sometimes happens that clients send us a PDF file (with corrections or changes in it) of an old version of a document.  We now keep only one (latest) InDesign documents and save any changes in there, so there's no real way to notice the PDF and InDesign are different versions.
    Questions:
    1. Is it possible for a user to have InDesign automatically fill-in the 'Author' field when exporting a pdf?
    2. Is it possible to have a unique element in an exported pdf that makes it clear it connects to a specific version of an InDesign document?
    Many thanks in advance!
    Moris
P.S. I am looking into XMP, but am completely new in this, but maybe there's a solution in there?  Additional info: Management now told us, for each change made to a document an incremental document should be saved (adding _v01 and for the next change save it with_v02 and so on), and the previous version kept as it is. For the studio this means a lot of additional (manual) effort and cluttered project folders with numerous files with increasing file name sizes. I'm hoping I can prevent this...

You can add stuff manually in the File>File Info
It might be possible to script this information into the File Info
All that info will come up in Acrobat under File>Document Properties.

  • InDesign CS5.5 Exporting PDF master page hyperlinks only work on first 2 pages

We recently upgraded from CS5 to CS5.5 and now our hyperlinks that go to different pages in the PDF only are working on the first 2 pages of each document in the book.  We have about 30 documents wrapped up in a indesign book.  On the master page we have hyperlinks that allow users to quickly go to the index in the back of the book.  After the CS5.5 upgrade the hyperlinks only work the the first 2 pages of each document.  We export to PDF(print) with hyperlinks enabled.
    I have tried the below:
    - I have tried 2 different computers
    - Deleted and re-created the indesign preference file
    - deleted and re-created the hyperlinks

Can you recommendd the best way to manage the following:
I'm on a Mac. Created an enewsletter for a client in Indesign CS5 with 7 "click here"s throughout the document. The hyperlinks are to connect w other PDF documents not URLs.
Where will I have the best luck creating the hyperlinks - Indesign or in the PDF I export? I have Acrobat Pro if I need to create the hyperlinks in the PDF.
Except I can't figure out how to create the links in either program as far as what name to designate and where do the PDFs reside so people can link to  them? And do I enter the file name of the PDF connected to the particular "click here."

  • Background Task Alert - won't export PDF

    Hello
I'm working on a booklet and have been able to export PDF versions of it yesterday but for some reason today it will not let me export a PDF anymore as it keeps telling prompting "Background Task Alert Failure." I've spent hours reading and trying all the recommended ways of fixing this and nothing is helping. I've uninstalled, reinstalled, and attempted to disable it somehow. Please help!!!
Also, I am not tech savvy so please describe what I can do in dummy speak if possible.
    Thank you.

Totally, Sorry for not including all of that information.
    InDesign Creative Cloud 2014

Do you think it might be because one of the images is a PDF using a different font?

  • Acrobat Pro won't export PDF to TIFF

My Acrobat X Pro won't export an engineering drawing PDF to a 1200 dpi TIFF. It says this image is too wide, and recommends I crop the image or lower the resolution. I do not wish to do either.  Why does acrobat care how wide my image is? I need it at 1200, and I need it whole and intact.  How do I get my TIFF image?

Use Photoshop. This is enormously outside the design and intention of Acrobat.

  • In Design won't export PDF

Help, two of us in the office attempt to export PDF to the desktop and get a "Failed to Export the PDF file" error. Also tried saving into the file folder
    and it failed as well.

If it one file that will not export for any user suspect a bad graphic.
Try to export half the book.
Try to export the other half.
Repeat with the page range that error-ed, split that range in half.
You will eventually narrow down to the page with a bad graphic.
    Re-save the graphic.
    ex; 100 page doc.
    Export 1-50 and 51-100
    51-100 failed
    export 51-75 & 76-100

  • Indesign won't export to pdf

    Hi everyone,
I've just upgraded to Indesign CS5. I've also downloaded the patch so that it's version 7.03.
When I try to export to pdf, I get an error that says: 1 problem was found with a background task: Failed to export an eps item on page A.
I get the same error when I try to export any file at all.
Anyone know why this is happening? It worked fine in CS4.
    Appreciate any advice.

Try putting a couple of random files together in a book and see if that will export. Books export to PDF in the foreground, so this should tell us if the problem is in the background task itself, or something else.
If it's happening with all files, my instinct is it is either corrupt preferences, a conflict with some other software, or a damaged instalation of ID. I think som Firefox plugins have been implicated in odd behavior in ID, and of course third party ID plugins are always suspect. Try cloing all other apps and see if it makes a difference, and deactvate any optional plugins, including any font auto-activation. If that doesn't work, the next thing I would try is Replace Your Preferences, followed by a reinstall as a last resort.
Have you ever been able to use the background export? Can you export to .idml instead? What's the OS?

  • InDesign CC Won't Export PDF

I Have a monthly mailing that I do. Each mont I open the InDesign file and update the imported PDFs, one for each side, and make a PDF. After the 2014 update, neither the new or old InDesign will export a PDF of the file. Just says it failed.
After some troubleshooting, I discovered that removing the type box in the file fixed the problem. i have lots of files with this issue, so I am looking for ideas on a fix.
I did a complete re-install do InDesign, but that didn't help.
I am running OSX 10.9 on a Mac Pro.

I realize that may be ideal, but I have around 30 of these templates, just for this client, that I do monthly. And each has multiple boxes with bar codes and other VD objects.
So woos this would mean hours of work. Up until now I have had no issues  Doing this over the years.

  • Indesign Crashes when exporting PDF

    Hi,
We are experiencing an issue when exporting an .indd file as .pdf. The process gets as far as a certain page (8 out of 13) and then crashes when reading a pdf image from that page. It does one of two things - it crashes or displays an 'out of memory' message. We had task manager running alongside the program to check memory usage and there are no major spikes during the export process (it doesn't even hit 80%)
    - We can export every other page in the document except this one
    - The export works without marks & bleeds enabled (not really sure of the terminology so I do apologise)
The document is going off to print so the pdf image has to be of high resolution. Does anyone have any ideas as to how we can get around this issue?
The INdesign package is CS4 (32bit) and the pc has 4GB of RAM
Any assistance would be much appreciated

Friends I'm reading all the posts, but I have the same problem. My Indesign crashes exporting a document of 60 pages into pdf.
Can anybody help me please? The next week I have to deliver the project. Thank you!

  • Indesign hang while exporting PDF

I'm trying to export a high quality PDF for my publisher. It's an Indesign book with 14 chapters. I've exported it many times before for preview. It always hangs on the same page; every time. I've tried changing the illustrations on that page from .ai to .PDF. Same thing.
Funny thing is that when I export the chapter separately, it works fine.  What else could it be that is causing this book to quit exporting on the same page every time?

If you are able to export in pieces (as in the chapter exports alone), but not all together, it most likely is a system resources problem. It sometimes works to close ID and reopen, then do the export as the first operation. You can also combine individual PDFs into a single file using Acrobat.

  • InDesign CS2 not exporting PDF (Vista)

I just got a new desktop computer at work with Windows Vista Business. Unfortunately there was not budget for the CS4 upgrade, so after reinstalling the Adobe Creative Suite 2 and copying over all my preferences and pdf job files, I thought I was all set to go. I loaded all my pdf .joboption files, locating the temp folder I copied them into and loading through InDesign (File | Adobe PDF Presets | Load), and then proceeded to try to export a PDF. Nothing happened. I know there is nothing wrong with my .joboption files because I've used them at work and used them at home (both WinXP systems) up until the very last day that I got my new computer setup.
I was able to export a PDF using the default .joboptions that came with InDesign. So, I'm not sure what the problem is. I'm guessing it's something to do with Vista, perhaps the location or a file setting or something. Has anyone run into this and how do I fix it? This is impacting my work and it is highly critical that I fix it,  ASAP. Please help.
    thanks,
    Kathleen

Unfortunately I am well aware that CS2 is not supported on Vista and that I am flying in the dark here. So far as day 1 goes, I am not experiencing any issues with InDesign, Photoshop, or Illustrator yet, with the exception of the PDF export issues. I have a couple ideas about that though, so hopefully I get it resolved soon.

  • Indesign fails to export PDF

I'm finishing a book: 12 chapters. The publisher requires a PDF for the printer and my deadline is tomorrow. I've exported press quality PDFs many times, as recently as two days ago. Now when I export it always hangs on the same page in chapter 10. If I omit that chapter, everything exports fine. If I export that chapter by itself: no problem. Even stranger — I can export the first 12 documents just fine. But then I can export the last last five (including the problem chapter), and they also export just fine.
I even tried building a new chapter by starting with a fresh template and dragging all the text and photographs from the old chapter. Very odd: I exported the whole book and it all worked!  But then I made a few minor adjustments, and now even this new fresh document causes the same problem.
    Any ideas?

Export in two pieces and combine in Acrobat Pro.

  • InD suddenly won't export to pdf

I've been exporting files to pdf all day to send to my printer, and suddenly InDesign won't export anymore. Pop ups open as usual, but nothing happens.Grrrrrrr!!

    Are you patched to 7.0.4?
Is the export hanging in the background, or is a file  supposedly created, but non-exisitent? Have you opened the Background Tasks panel to see if the task is completing?
Can you export in the foreground by putting the file in a Book?

  • Best practice export PDFs for Pad viewing?

    Have an emergency question here:
A client has asked us to find out what export settings our former graphic designer used when he took copies of the client's InDesign files and exported PDF files that were higher quality than those exported by the client's in-house designer. Our designer has since moved to another state.
So, I'm asking here for advice we can relay to the client. His large job is due tomorrow. Although we'll take the PDFs and output them for Web use, this is not the usual stripped-down to basics situation. The results will have to look good on an iPad first of all (also on on Web pages), which means the PDFs we start from need to be higher quality than those usually destined for Web use. The entire publication is photo-intensive with many people pictures where clean appearance is important. Of course the pages also contain text, so that has to be crisp as well.
As I said, we lost our InDesign guru, and the client's designer is being faced with a new challenge. The client is calling me and asking How soon? How soon?
    Help? Thanks in advance.

Steve: If these are bitmaps inside a PDF that's going to be viewed on the iPad, you cannot rely on its "native resolution". Think about this: What if the original page size of this PDF is 5.5" x 8"? What if it is 20" x 32"? Which one will show the images "at their native resolution"?

  • "Failed to Export PDF"

    Dear Friends,
when trying to export a document in Indesign CS4 as PDF-file, I get an error message:
    Adobe InDesign
    Failed to Export PDF.
    OK
After dismissing this dialog, the export-process quits and no PDF-file is created.
There aren't any further notice-, warning- or error messages.
The document itself should be valid, no links are missing or update-needing and all in used fonts are available on the system Indesign is running.
I had already searched for a solution, or at least a reason for this error message, and found the following pages, dealing with that error message:
"Failed to Export PDF" when you downsample large images while exporting to PDF (InDesign)
I disabled downsampling in PDF-export dialogue as it is mentioned in the help file, but the error message still occures.
InDesign error "failed to export the pdf file"
I ungrouped everything by selecting all objects on each of these two pages and ungrouping as many times as the option was available as it is described on the page, but the error still stays.
Interestingly, removing the second sheet (=page) of this originally two sheet consisting Indesign document leads to a successful PDF-document export.
But I want to export both sheets, not only the first one, into one single PDF-document.
So there must be probably something on sheet number two which prevents a successful PDF-document export resulting in the error message mentioned above.
Because there are no further informations provided except that the export failed, it is not very easy to track down the reason for this problem.
Is there a log file for export or general application issues?
Maybe you have also experienced this error during the past and maybe even know some walkaround or hint which could lead to the reason?
Thank you for your answers in advance!
    With best regards
    Inno

    Thank you for your answers!
Exporting page 2 alone leads to an PDF-export-error.
The error happens when PDF-file finalization is in progress.
I found out that embedded PSD-files caused the problem.
After un-embedding them, the PDF-export worked well, also for both pages.
Now however, there are still some questions open:
Why do embedded PSD-files cause an export-failure during PDF-export?
Why aren't any information given to user about this failure?
    With best regards
    Inno
