InDesign won't let me move items!!

Hey there,
So I am a graphic designer and have been doing it for years and am pretty confident with InDesign but it just recently did something the other day that it never did before. All of the content and items in InDesign is stuck in place. I can't move anything by clicking and dragging with my mouse or mouse pad. The only way I can move items is with the arrow keys. I can however select and resize. Nothing is locked and there is only one layer. From what I have already researched I was told to shift, control, alt, command right when opening InDesign and reset the preferences. I've done that and uninstalled and reinstalled the software. What is there to do now?

First things first, when you used the keyboard shortcut to reset preferences, did you get a dialog box asking if you wanted to reset your preferences with YES and NO buttons that you needed to click before InDesign would open? If you didn't get this dialog box, then your preferences were not affected.
You have to do this quickly after double clicking the ID application icon. You may need to do this several times until you actually get the dialog box.
Secondly, does this affect all existing ID documents?
If it is only this one document, you can export to IDML and then open this in ID to remove any minor corruption.
If you create a brand new document does it still exist?
Also be aware that reinstalling InDesign does NOT reset/replace your existing preferences which may still be corrupted.

Btw, I am on a Mac Book Pro Retina, latest updates on everything. If that makes a difference?

iTunes only lets you move items purchased from the iTunes Store from an i-device to a computer.  You can copy anything the other way.

You can run the 10.8.5 combo and 10.8.5 supplemental installers, instead of going through the frequently wonky App Store:
OS X Mountain Lion Update v10.8.5 (Combo)

Also, when I go on to safari, another alert pops up that safari cannot verify the identity of the website, anything that I type in to as common as google.com. It gives me 3 options to either cancel, look at details, and continue. I've looked at the details of the website of Google and it is legitimate the site. Any help?

  • Macbook Pro won't let me move files to HD without authentication. Also when I try to move files from the HD to the desk it just copies them.

My 2013 Macbook Pro running Mavericks 10.9.5 won't let me move files to the HD without authentication. So I have to keep putting my password in. Also when I try to move files from the HD to the desk it just copies them. This just suddenly happened last night. Anyone have any ideas what it could be? Thanks

See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1229?viewlocale=en_US - I doubt that it will solve your problem, though. You may want to post on the iPhoto forum - that's where all of the iPhoto experts hang out.

  • Mac won't let me move files into a folder bc it THINKS there are duplicate files - but they're not

Mac won't let me move files into a folder bc it THINKS there are duplicate files - but they're not. There are hundreds of what it thinks are duplicates. How can I get it to let me put them all into a folder and create unique names? If I do one file at a time, it gives me the option to keep both files. But not when I am moving hundreds at a time.

A reply to an old problem, but I couldn't find this solution anywhere. I had the same problem when I moved my iTunes library to an external drive. As Apple recommends, I used File > Library > Organize Library > Consolidate Files to copy my music files from my overstuffed hard drive to the external drive. Copying went fine for a while, adding about two-thirds of my files to the new drive without incident. Then I got the big stop sign with the error message: "Copying files failed. The disk could not be read from or written to."
This turned out to have nothing to do with either the hard drive or the external disk. I had a bad file in my music library that was shutting down the consolidation process. Unfortunately the error message says nothing about which file may be the culprit. All I could think to do was to go back to my original library in iTunes and sort by Artist, select all cuts with artists beginning with A, right click and select "Consolidate Files". Then do the same with B artists, etc. Proceeding this way, files resumed copying but when I got to the "S" selections, the consolidate process failed again. Then I selected smaller and smaller batches until the problem file was identified. Removed it from my library and then Consolidate worked fine through the rest of the library. Problem solved.
I spent several days working through this; hope I can save someone else the time.

  • How do I uninstall an application. It won't let me move it to trash as it says it's open. How do i close it

How do I uninstall an application that I downloaded by mistake? It won't let me move it to trash as it says it's open. How do I close it?

Launch the Activity Monitor in /Utilities and sort by name. Select any that refer to the app (shame you didn't indicate what it was), click on the Quit Process button, and click on Force Quit. When all are gone, empty the trash.

You'll want to read about the playback controls on page 21 of your iPod's User Guide, specifically the fast forward and rewind controls.

  • .DS_store won't let me move files from one external drive to another

I am trying to move some music files from one external harddrive to another.  They are both connected to my mac mini.
In the "from" harddrive I have a folder with a bunch of music files in it and it also has a new file in it called DS_store. When I open this folder and select all, it naturally selects all of my music files and this DS_store file.  When I try to drag all of this to the "destination" harddrive I open the folder that I want to drag them to which already has some music and it has the DS_store file too, it won't let me drag the files to it   It says something like there is already a DS_store file there.  So I tried deleting that file from each external drive and it just reappears.
If I create an empty folder in the destination drive, I can drag all of the files to it.  The problem is I want the new files to be in the same folder with the older files.
In addition there are a few other ghost type files that have shown up too.
Any suggestions would be welcome.  Thanks.

If you're copying from a FAT-formatted volume, do as below.
    Back up all data.
Select the text on the line below by dragging across it. Don't include the blank space at the end of the line. Only the text should be highlighted.
    dot_clean -m
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Now switch to the Finder and and select the icon of the FAT volume. Drag into the Terminal window. More text will be added to what you entered.
Click in the Terminal window to activate it, then press return.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear. Then quit Terminal and try the copy again.

  • ITunes Shopping Cart won't let me delete items.

I have some items in my shopping cart that I need to delete because I've already purchased them. But the problem is that it won't let me delete them and it also says that it is not available in the Canadian Store. If someone knows how to fix this that would be great.

Same problem as well with music videos I added that were originally single purchase items and then the next day became Album Only in my shopping cart (though they really weren't) and now I can't delete them. I've tried several tricks to no avail.
I've called Apple Care twice with no resolution. They keep wanting to send me to iTunes Store support but I don't think the people answering there even know how to use a computer. They refuse to "escalate" the issue even though no one has still provided an answer. All I want is for the iTunes staff to delete my entire shopping cart contents but no.
Obvious something is seriously messed-up with the iTMS database and Apple is covering it up to prevent a huge blow to their Christmas sales. I'm sure the DBAs are working round the clock to fix this with no resolution yet.
In 25 years this is the worst support I've ever had from Apple.

  • InDesign won't let me edit my document every time I save

For about a month now, every time I press ctrl + s to save my documents in InDesign it seems to lock all components of my document and won't let me edit it unless I close and open it again multiple times.
I'm running InDesign on Windows 8 and I know it's been known to be more glitchy on PCs than Macs, but is anyone else having this problem/know how to fix it?

My gut instinct is that ID actually is a lot more trouble-free on Windows 8 than it is on Yosemite, based on what we see here, but that's got nothing to do with your problem.

  • ICal keeps sending alarms for past events and won't let me delete items from calendar, I hit delete but the event just keeps multiplying on my calendar?

iCal just started repeatedly sending me alarms a couple of days ago. I thought deleting the event from my calendar would help but it won't let me delete them, they just keep multiplying in my calendar. Help please

    Hello again,
Well I seem to have overcome the problem, but not easily, and not by identifying the cause. I don't like that I don't know what caused the trouble. I make no guarantees, but this is what I did (on an iMac with Snow Leopard 10.6.8). Be sure to create backup copies of your files first:
[Note: before you do any of this, you may want to try running Disk Utility program (found in Applications/Utilities/) and run the "Repair Permissions" option. See if that solves anything, but it didn't for me]
    a) I exported my iCal as an archive: Menu item, "File/Export/iCal Archive...". This won't likely do you any good, though, as something was wrong with it and I could not re-import it. But try anyhow.
    b) After backing them up, I deleted the folders and contents inside the Calendars folder: "Users/<your user name>/Library/Calendars/<subdirectories>". To create a backup, right-click on the Calendar folder and choose "compress Calendars" from the pop-up menu. Then drag the folder contents into the trash.
    c) After creating backup copies, delete (drag into the trash) these preferences files found in "Users/<your username>/Library/Preferences" (the slashes delimit the folder names):
      Users/<your username>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iCal.plist
      Users/<your username>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iCal.helper.plist
      Users/<your username>/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.iCal.helper.<some convoluted hex number>.plist
    d) Restart your computer;
    e) Launch iCal and reimport the individual calendar files you exported earlier.
    Hopefully all is well.
Let me emphasize again that you will not likely succeed in reimporting the calendar archive. In the first place it likely contains corrupted data that caused your trouble in the first place. So you will need to import the individual calendars that have been exported. Be very certain to export these individually first.
And if you want to make doubly certain, then copy and paste some of your important and key events into a TextEdit file and save that file in case you don't succeed.
Perhaps you subscribed to some online calendar? If I recall correctly I had imported a calendar when the World Cup Soccer series was happening; I speculate that might have contributed to the issue. I wish I could have found exactly what caused the trouble. It may have been some older, less compatible format that was retained through a series of Mac OS updates.
    Good luck.

  • After I put three .mov files in to iMovie it will only let me out them in a certain order and won't let me move them around.  Should I convert them to a different format?

I put the files on my desktop and imported them into iMovie but now it only lets me havce them in a certain order.  iMovie won't let me drag them to different locations.

If they play OK in Imovie then the format is OK.   Have you put them into a project timline or are you trying to rearrange them in an event?

  • Indesign won't let me save, save as or undo!

    Hi there.
This started when I was working on a particular file and so I thought that one was corrupt but it now seems to be happening for every file I work on. It's a crisis to be honest.
Indesign won't allow me to Undo, Save or even Save As. I am able to export but that's about it. All the other options are greyed out.e help??
    Can anyon

If your using a eternal hard drive that only has a NTFS read, then you might want to save it to the computer but I'm not sure if that will work. But heres a link so that you could change the read only permissions. How can you change read only permissions on an external hard drive on a Mac?

  • My indesign  won't let me save my document

Start by telling us your InDesign version and what operating system, please. Has this ever worked for you? If it has, was there anything you installed which caused it to happen?
