Indesign won't open

I was using indesign yesterday for my school work and I think I ended up having to force quit it becuase it wasn't closing and today when I went to open it it won't open. It doesn't say why it just says indesign as quit unexpectedly. It won't even open in safe mode. Can anyone help me fix it??? I'm desperate as I have homework to finish on it!!

You probably have a damaged file inthe recovery folder that is crashing as soon as ID restarts. With ID cloes, find the recovery folder -- since you haven't said what version, I'll send you to the Replace Your Preferences link and tell you that it is normall y in the caches folder wher you'd find InDesign Saved Data, and those locations are listed there for you -- and move everything in it to the desktop (you can probably delete it all later, but make sure you don't need it, first). ID should now restart, and if the original file is not damaged it should open at the last saved state, so you may have lost some work, but at least not the whole file.

  • CS3 InDesign won't open a CS2 In Design .INX file

CS3 InDesign won't open a CS2 In Design .INX file.
I sent my graphic designer an .INX file created on CS2
and he got an error message and said he could not open.
He said it is not possible.
He lost the job - because he didn't want to investigate further.
I can't imagine ADOBE leaving this problem unsolved!
    What do I do??

I don't recall that. I can visualise the situation, but then I would expect it to create the same lost feature problems as encountered in opening with an earlier version. So there would still be a risk that the file would lose something in translation.
And then again, if a CS2 plug-in has been used and is required to open the file, I would expect the translation into XML to ignore anything that can't be translated, and for the depleted file still to open in CS3.

  • DESPERATE... Indesign won't open most of my Indesign files???

Sorry if my message sounds panicked but I am going out of my mind with worry. I am working late on a deadline to get a job done, my inDesign has decided to give me the following message when I open any of the many 100 inDesign files I have made: 'Cannot open the file "nameof file.indd". Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing, or the file may be open in another application.
Please can anyone tell me what is going on. I am sitting at my desk in tears. If I don't make my morning deadline i'm fcked!!!! to be quite blunt :-(
Does anyone know how to fix this? Everything was working up until about an hour ago and a old inDesign files work but not the ones that I need.
Help me, i'm seriously in despair here :-( :-( :-(

Sounds very much like these files were edited with a newer version of ID
    than you're using.
What version are you using? If it's earlier than CS3, you can email me
one of the files that won't open and I'll try it here. If I can open it,
I'll let you know what the history of the file is.
Click my name, go to my website and you'll find contact info there.

I updated InDesign today. Now it won't open. Application not responding.

From what I have been reading from other posts on this forum, the
issue may be caused by the clear history settings. It was suppose
to have been fixed in v30.

  • InDesign won't open when network drive is not available.

    Hi everyone,
I have a laptop (MacBook Pro OSX10.9.5), which shares a network drive in my office. The drive is with a different computer. When I take the laptop out of the office network (to a meeting or home), InDesign will not open, it gives me the following error (see attached image). I've tried replacing the Defaults and SavedData files, and also re-installing InDesign from scratch. I still get the same error. Any idea what is happening or how to fix it? Thank you in advance.
    Rafa.

    Hi!
I figured out what the issue was, finally. After playing around, I noticed that my InDesign Fonts folder, had "alias" links to some fonts that resided on that shared drive. As soon as I deleted all the ones that where aliases, the error went away. Hopefully this helps someone in the future.

  • InDesign won't open... HELP!

I just upgraded from CS to CS2. I use Illustrator and Photoshop daily, and I've already used ImageReady, so I know those all work, however, InDesign has yet to function properly. InDesign goes through it's opening process and gets to the welcome box, but once it's there, the program freezes and I get the spinning wheel of death (the "busy" rainbow wheel in the mac.) The only solution from there is right click/CTRL click + Force Quit and shut it down. I really need to get in for a project I started in CS (and have nearly completed) but the program won't even open.
Does anyone have a suggestion on why this is happening and what I can do to fix it? I really need to use this program ASAP.
    THANKS!!
    Amanda

    Buko,
I agree and I understand where you're coming from. I wouldn't want to help people with illegal software either. However, my previous actions were in response to your rude behavior. If you had simply asked for information, I would have been glad to provide whatever was needed. I don't respond well to people that act so brash - especially toward someone they have never met - and I'm sure other people in these forums would feel the same way. I don't appreciate being accused of pirating when I was not. (BTW, the copy of CS that I had been using for so long was TOTALLY pirated, so I finally got a legal copy and was thrilled.) I am being totally honest here and hope that you don't take this with a poor tone... I don't intend this to be nasty at all.
I've never been here before or needed help with such problems, and since I am new to these forums I was unaware of what I should post. I will take note of the information from OldBob for the next time I need help. But in all honesty Buko, a nicer tone goes miles further than a nasty, sarcastic one. I'm no computer whiz, I've never been here before, and I'm just trying to find a solution to my frustrating problem. Getting such a nasty response right out of the gate was highly irritating and uncalled for. I'm sure you're very talented and can provide useful help, but your posts were very nasty.
On a positive note, I would like to know more about what you meant with saying makes the software my software is not optimum for my setup. Is it CS2 or my system? And what can you suggest that would make this situation, at least, more tolerable? (Unfortunately the likelihood of me getting CS3 any time soon is very slim... I finally got my very cheap boss to spring for CS2 a month ago, I doubt he'll go for an upgrade already.)
    Thank you,
    Amanda

  • Adobe InDesign won't open docs in Win 7

I'm setting up a new desktop PC that came with pre-installed Windows 7 Home Premium, V 6.17601 Service Pack 1,  64-bit. I installed all Important updates, which included SP 2 & 3.
I then installed Adobe Creative Suite CS4 Design Standard (previously run problem-free on Windows Vista).
I didn't know about de-activating the apps before installing them. I just put in the CS4 CDs and all apps installed. No hassle. All apps opened. Photoshop works fine. Illustrator wouldn't open due to plug-in problem. I ran it through the Windows Program Compatibility tool and it now works fine.
The problems are with InDesign and Adobe Acrobat 6 (solve that later).
When I try to open previously-created ID documents, I get the error message: "Cannot open xx.indd. Please upgrade your plug-ins to their latest versions, or upgrade to the latest version of InDesign".
I can't find anything about upgrading plug-ins to latest versions. How can I do this?
I am current with all InDesign updates. I've tried running the app as an administrator and used the Compatibility Tool (I've tried using the possible different settings, each in turn, for Windows Vista, Vista SP1, Vista SP 2 and XP (SP2 and 3). I still get the same error message. I can create new InD docs, but not open any of my previous work.
I even tried changing the plug-ins in the one place I could see, under Help > Configure Plug-ins. .I tried  all  3 of the possible configurations: Required, then All, then Adobe, to no avail.
Can anyone help me? If this forum isn't the right place for me to be, can someone please indicate a workable Adobe forum??? Thank you so much.

    Hi
I never changed the version of InDesign. It's still version 3.01 (part of the package CS4 Premium). My old computer died, I got a new one, and I did a new install of CS4 on the new machine.
On the old computer running Windows Vista, I could open these ID documents. Now on the new computer running Windows 7, I can't open them. The error message I get is to upgrade my plug-ins to their latest versions or upgrade my software.
What changed here was my OS - from Windows Vista to Windows 7. In my original post, I list all the steps I have taken to try to deal with the compatibility problem. To no avail. And when I try to follow the suggestion in the error message (to "upgrade my plug-ins"), I can find nothing on this topic. I don't know how to do what the error message suggests as a solution. Am I missing something about this?
I certainly don't want to have to purchase a whole new Creative Suite; CS4 isn't that old. And it's a lot of money.
    Additonal help really appreciated!
    Joan

  • .swf file created from Indesign won't open in Flash Player

I have created an interactive flash presentation using Indesign. For several weeks I have made edits, exported a .swf file and opened the file by double-clicking it to open in Flash Player. From there I was able to export an .exe file with an embedded projector for users that may not have flash player. The file does not open and asks whcih progrma I would like to open with when clicking the file.
I am running Windows XP, Adobe CS5
    Thanks for your help.

That sounds more Windows file association issue.Have you tried to Right-Click your SWF and choosed Open With (or something like that), you can choose Flash Player from that list if it´s installed.

  • Indesign won't open / run on new iMac

I have recently used Apple's automatic file transfer function to transfer all of my data / applications etc from my old iMac to my new machine (an iMac also). I am now unable to open InDesign on my new machine - it quits while opening (with a dialogue box that sayd 'InDesign quit unexpectedly'). I have deactivated and uninstalled CS from my old computer, thinking this may be causing the issue, but it still doesn't work. All other programs within the creative suite are working.
My version is CS5.5, and my operating system is Mac OSX 10.8.2
If anyone can help that would be much appreciated. Otherwise can someone provide me with an email address or phone number for support? I am in Australia and keep being directed to a US phone number, which obviously has a different time zone and could cost a small fortune..
    thank you.

Adobe applications should never be migrated. Uninstall and then install it properly using the original installation media.

  • InDesign won't open for me

I've been trying to open InDesign again and I'm in an endless loop where it gives me the options of "show details", "OK" and "reopen" -- but when I click reopen it just does the same thing all over. FYI this is on an iMac with Maverick 10.9.3, and I still have InDesign CS5. I doubt that this matters but I just installed a new ergonomic keyboard -- I was just trying it out when this all occurred (I use InDesign everyday, so this whole glitch comes as a surprise.) Would appreciate any suggestions -- thanks!
