IndesignCS5 "edit original" button launches preview to open native Illustrator EPS

Help! I can't believe CS5 does this. Is there a fix besides using the 'Edit with" submenu?
Thanks

Right click any EPS file and choose get info. From there you can choose the program you want to open files.
Beware the use of EPS. You can only have one program as the default choice and I've found that many people hanging onto to EPS are also using it from Photoshop.
While I'll use an EPS if it's client supplied logo, the moment I have to open the file to do anything with it, it gets resaved in modern format.
Rules of thumb: In Photoshop save as PSD unless the file contains text or vector data. In that case save as PDF (you can change the extension to PDP and the operating system will know to use Photoshop for editing)
From Illustrator: AI or PDF. Makes no difference really since placing AI files actually use the PDF portion of the file.

  • I just upgraded to Snow Leopard and a new imac. Could someone tell me where the preference is to have a file open in its original file format. Right now my illustrator eps are opening in preview.

I just upgraded to Snow Leopard and a new Imac. Could someone tell me where the preference is to change file to open in original program instead of preview?

Right-click on one of the files and choose 'get info'. in the info box. Change the 'open with' setting to your correct application. Check the 'always open with' option before OK-ing the change, then click the 'change all' button before closing the info window.

  • When I launch preview, it opens all the previous pictures unless I have "closed" their window before quitting.

    Hey everyone,
I was hoping someone could help me... it appears that in OSX 10.7 (Lion), whenever I open Preview to see an image, I noticed that the last image I had opened, also opened.  This happens CONSITENTLY.  I figured out that this little "bug" seems to occur whenever I haven't specificly closed (Ctrl + w) a picture before quitting (ctrl + q).  So, if I only quit Preview... the next time I launch it every picture that I haven't closed just pops right back up.
This makes no sense to me.  If somebody quits Preview to stop viewing a picture, they are obviously intentionally finished looking at it.  I could understand wanting a browser to restore a session, but a session of Preview?  Silly!
My question... is there a preferance or anything that I can turn off so that when I quit, it doesn't relaunch those pics?  I looked around and couldn't find anything... so any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks all,

That's not just Preview, ie also Safari is doing the same.
    From here:
Now apps you close will reopen right where you left off, so you never have to start from scratch again. And when you install software updates, you no longer need to save your work, close your apps, and spend valuable time setting everything up again. With Resume, you can restart your Mac and return to what you were doing — with all your apps in the places where you left them.
    It's not a bug, it's a feature
You can change it in for the whole system:
System Preferences > General > "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps"

  • Stinkin' "PREVIEW" app opening all my EPS & PDF files–HELP

All of my EPS and PDF documents are now defaulting to open in PREVIEW. Anyway to assign them to open in Acrobat and Illustrator as they used to? I am aware of the manual way to do it it's just inconvenient. Any input is appreciated. Thanks

  • Edit Original...Smoked by PS CS4 Trial Uninstall

I don't know if anyone else has experienced this or knows a fix other than re-install of CS3.
Owning CS3 Design Premium, but being a regular follower of the Photoshop U2U forum, I needed to see for myself whether Photoshop CS4 would run on my system, so logically, I installed the free trial. FWIW, with a display driver update, PS CS4 ran nicely, but regardless, I'm not in a position to purchase the suite upgrade at this time. The trial's run out, and I uninstalled it this morning. While the PS CS4 trial was active, ID CS3's Edit Original command launched or switched to it, rather than PS CS3. I didn't fuss much about that, welcoming the CS4-familiarizing exercise. But now, with it uninstalled, ID's Edit Original is disabled...doesn't even show on the context, (rt-click), menu, and Links panel button is dead.
Any thoughts on getting it back?
PS: Trashing prefs didn't work. Needless to say, I was thrilled.

When you uninstalled it removed the file associations from Windows, which is what tells ID where to send the file for editing.
Open Explorer, Click the view menu, then Folder Options > File Types tab. If the file type (extension) is still in the list, click on it, then click the Change button below to set a new program (Photoshop) to open it. Repeat for all the types you want Photoshop to open.
If the type is not in the list, click the "new" button and add it.

  • InDesign v 3.0 -- Linked files & Edit Original command problems

I am running InDesign v 3.0 and Photoshop CS5 on a new Mac Pro.  When I use the Links pallet, after having selected a linked image with the black arrow, and choose "Edit Original", the image file will open in Apple Preview, rather than in Photoshop CS5.  How do I specify it to open in PSCS5?  Also, the "Update Link" menu is always greyed out so I cannot select it.  Thanks!

In the Finder, select the image type you want to open in Photoshop (TIFF, JPEG, etc.). Choose File > Info.  In the Open With section, choose Photoshop CS5 from the list of applications. Click Change All.

  • Edit original, specify photoshop

How can I specify which program I'd like to use when clicking the "Edit Original" button?

Actually I overlooked this and use it myself sometimes.
From the link flyout select reveal in Bridge and then right or control click on the highlighted image icon and select open with and choose what application you wish since it is a linked file when you return ti Illustrator it will either update automatically or ask you if you wish to update it.
I know you want to choose it once but if you do that and you want to choose a different app for that particular linked file then you would need a way to choose again so this is the least intrusive way and gives you the most choices.

  • Open with command - EPS file confusion.

I recieved a folder of Illustrator vector eps files that seemed to want to open in Photoshop by default. I changed all in Finder to 'open with' Illustrator CS.
Now my Photoshop files try to open in Illustrator too. So I change all to open in Photoshop and am back to square one with vectors opening there by default too.
Is there a way to set Illustrator EPS to open in Illustrator and Photoshop EPS to open in Photoshop? I know I can just drag them onto the relevant icon but if I double click a Photoshop EPS I have to force out of Illustrator to stop it opening.
Who's bright idea it was to give two distinctly different file formats the same extension anyway?

I think the underlying cause of the problem is the change Apple has made in how Launch Services is identifying these files in Tiger.
An Illustrator EPS file has a creator code of 'ART5', a file type of 'EPSF', and a filename extension of ".eps". A Photoshop EPS file has a creator code of '8BIM', a file type of 'EPSF' (same as an Illy EPS), and a filename extension of ".eps" (again, same as an Illy EPS).
Prior to OS X 10.4, Launch Services would consider an Illustrator EPS file to be different from a Photoshop EPS file because of the different creator codes on the file. (While we know that they are "different" based on the type of data they contain (i.e. vector vs. raster), Launch Services doesn't really know anything about the content of the files; it only looks at the file properties to make its decisions). Since they were different, you could choose to have one open in Illustrator and the other open in Photoshop. So, just by default, Photoshop EPS files would open in Photoshop and Illustrator EPS files would open in Illustrator.
In OS X 10.4, Apple changed some things around. Prior to 10.4, a combination of a file's creator code, file type, and filename extension were mapped to a particular application that would open it. In 10.4, the file's creator code, file type, and filename extension aren't mapped directly to an application, but to an intermediary called a "Uniform Type Identifier" (UTI). It's the UTI then that is mapped to an application that will open it. The UTI for an EPS file is the string "com.adobe.encapsulated- postscript". Launch Services doesn't really distinguish between an Illustrator "com.adobe.encapsulated-postscript" file or a Photoshop "com.adobe.encapsulated-postscript" file. So, what happens is that both an Illustrator EPS file (creator code 'ART5', file type 'EPSF', filename extension ".eps") and a Photoshop EPS file (creator code '8BIM', file type 'EPSF', filename extension ".eps") are mapped to the same UTI type, "com.adobe.encapsulated- postscript", which itself can be globally mapped to only one application. In other words, globally either Illustrator or Photoshop, but not both.
While not ideal, files do support a per-file preference setting. So if you have a global setting to open eps files in Illustrator then by default double-clicking on will, well, open them in Illustrator. If you have a Photoshop EPS file and would like to open it in Photoshop, you could use the Get Info window to choose Photoshop instead -- just don't click the Change All button. That file, from then on, should always open in Photoshop when you double click on it. (That "user override" preference is saved in the resource fork of the file so it should stay with it).
The switch to UTIs has helped simplify things quite a bit, such as this example with the different types of PDF files. Prior to OS X 10.4, you'd have to repeat the custom "Open With" preference for each type of PDF, which was confusing for most users.
Technically, both Illustrator EPS files and Photoshop EPS files contain the same type of information: Encapsulated PostScript; the fact that Adobe provides two applications, one to edit image-based EPS files, and a second to edit vector-based EPS files is somewhat beside the point. While you could send feedback to Apple about this, I think it's probably up to Adobe to figure something out. They could quite easily define Illustrator EPS and Photoshop EPS files as subclasses of "com.adobe.encapsulated-postscript". For example, vector-based Illustrator EPS files might be "com.adobe.encapsulated-postscript.vector" that conform to "com.adobe.encapsulated-postscript", while raster-based Photoshop EPS files might be "com.adobe.encapsulated-postscript.raster" that conform to "com.adobe.encapsulated-postscript". Since there'd be two distinct types, they could each be mapped to their own application.
    Hope this helps....

  • "Edit original" for JPEG opens Preview, not Photoshop?

When I right-click on a JPEG in InDesign CS 5 and then select "edit original", it opens the photo in Preview. Is there a way to set the default application associated with JPEGs to Photoshop?
    Thanks

Oh, I see. I was hoping there might be a separate function for ID because I generally like to open JPEGs quickly in Preview. I guess I'll just stick with the contextual menu and scroll to Photoshop. Not a big deal.
    Thanks!

  • How can I get 'Edit Original' to open file in Photoshop?

I have a Mac running OSX 10.6.2. I have the full CS4 Suite.
When I try clicking 'Edit Original' in Illustrator it opens the file in Apple's pdf viewer: 'Preview'. How can I change it to open in Photoshop by default?
File is CMYK tiff - jsut in case that matters
I've checked the PDF manual - no joy
    Can anyone help?
    Cheers
    Nick

    Thanks SeniorSSS
    It works!
Is it me or is that a really off-the-wall solution for Apple to take?:
If you want to change the way a programme functions, choose a completely unrelated file and use it to instruct all other files of the same type. I would never have thought of that solution in a million years. Perhaps I don't think outside the box ...
Anyway, much appreciated all the same
    Cheers

  • Edit Original fails to open image in Photoshop

For some unknown reason, when using the Edit Original function in InDesign, it will open Photoshop but then fails to open the image. Same results when using Edit with. Will work with Preview and Acrobat. Any solutions?
    CS4 on Mac OSX 10.6

    Hi Steve
Finally solved the issue. It was down to InDesign. I had to completely uninstall InDesign and its preferences, then reinstall from disc. The installation had errors so after a restart and reinstallation, downloading updates etc. it now works!! Not sure what is was actually down to though.

  • When I click "Edit Original" in the links panel it opens MICROSOFT PAINT!

When I click "Edit Original" with a jpeg selected in the links panel it opens Microsoft Paint! In Windows (7) the file association is Windows Picture Viewer (NOT Paint!) and in Bridge it is associated with Photoshop CC. In InDesign we have the option of choosing which program to edit linked files with. In Illustrator we are stuck with the astounding Paint! Why?? 17 versions and this still bugs me!

    Thanks Mylenium.
I know how to change the default program associated with an extension (I would like to keep picture viewer as the default open option for JPG) but I don't know how I change the EDIT association (currently Paint for JPG) in Win 7.
And it would be much more useful if AI could just give us the option of setting defaults (as Bridge does) OR AI could just use Bridge's defaults OR give us an "Open with" option as in Indesign. So many possible solutions, I've feature-requested this on occasions since CS1, it works in other Adobe apps, so I can only think Adobe is wilfully ignoring this issue for Irritator.

  • "Edit Original" opens PS, but not the image

When I try to edit an image using the "edit original" or 'edit with..' command in ID, Photoshop open up with a blank screen (no error message & no photo). Or in the case of a vector file, Illustrator opens up with the message "file not found". In the links panel, the graphics show the correct path on my C drive. Same thing happens when I try to open a file from Bridge: PS opens, but not the file.
I've seen lots of posts where the wrong application opens the graphic, but none where the correct app opens without a file.  any idea what's going on here?
I recently moved into a new Quad core i7 computer with a RAID-1 configuration, running Windows 7 Pro. I did a clean install of CS4 Premium, and also recently installed all the updates to CS4.
Any help or suggestions are MUCH appreciated. I usually have a couple hundred graphics to "edit original" in each of the publications I work on. Thank you!

It's 64 bit Windows. I bought the computer with Windows 7 Pro because it's supposed to be able to install/run older software that may not be compatible with Windows 7 64 bit.  I have 9Gb of RAM.
I installed CS4 to the default directory, but Windows created a folder called "Program Files (x86)" for it, where it has installed all my older software that was either 32-bit or XP compatible.
My browser is IE v.8, and I'm still using the trial version of Norton Internet Security that came with the machine.
I've also been using the HP factory-installed Windows theme.
I should mention that I bought the computer refurbished and it didn't work when it arrived. I had to send it back to HP for a complete overhaul and reinstall of the OS. I believe they also had to replace the graphics card, which is now an NVIDIA GeForce GT 220. It's been running fine since then, just this one glitch that I've noticed so far.

  • Photoshop opens a separate window every time i select edit original in InDesign

I'm running CS5 and have a problem when editing linked files from InDesign.
    As an example:
    • I have an InDesign file that has a Photoshop file linked to it.
    • I need to edit the linked file so i use the 'Edit Original' function in the Links Panel - this open the link in Photoshop.
    • I edit and save but leave the file open
    • InDesign updates the change but i need to change something else
    • I use 'Edit Original' again but instead of taking me straight back to the PSD file i was just working on, Photoshop opens a new window that i am supposed to make changes to
    • If i was to make 5 changes, there would be 5 separate windows open in Photoshop
    • Closing the file at the end of each change isn't an option as some Photoshop files exceed 1.5GB
    Any suggestions...?

I'd expect a poweruser to go to their Keyboard preferencepane to enable standard F keys.
When you buy an Apple computer without loading it with software when would you use those keys? I can't think of one application that uses it, other than the obvious things like CTRL+F2 and the like that hardly anyone uses and I'd consider only there for strict keyboard jocks. After years of new computers having to disable the hide dock shortcut for feather it shouldn't be a crazy thing to expect someone to find their keyboard preferences if they demand that functionality. Heck, even Adobe just dropped that shortcut in CS4.
Either that or ask for apple to make 140 key keyboards.
